Tips that helped me as a photographer

These tips have helped and are helping me in my professional career. They may not be relevant for a large number of amateur photographers, but for me they are very important.

Learn to shoot 'RAW' and learn to shoot 'JPEG'!

Only a year later, I realized the importance and complexity of this advice. As it turns out, there are many differences between the RAW and JPEG shooting styles. First of all, the differences are related to the fact that shooting in RAW should have further post-processing (post-processing), while it is less demanding on the selection of shooting parameters. Shooting in JPEG is more demanding to adjust all shooting parameters (and there are millions of them!). Learning how to choose the right 'JPEG setting' is very difficult. I always shoot orders in RAW, and I really like to shoot and process the rubber RAWs of modern cameras. At the same time, I really love shooting in the 'JPEG' format, adjusting all kinds of 'on-camera' image enhancements while shooting. But I don't like shooting in RAW + JPEG format, but I also know the peculiarities of this method. It is convenient to shoot in the RAW + JPEG format only when the RAW will be converted by native programs that understand all its settings. In this case, both JPEG and RAW will look good. I have described the basic technique for working with RAW here.

  • The main tasks when shooting in 'RAW': find a converter to your liking and learn how to work with it.
  • The main tasks when shooting in 'JPEG': to learn how to use all available image settings to the maximum to obtain the best image quality, get used to the behavior of the image on a particular camera.

Learn Adobe Lightroom!

This is a part of the previous point that deserves special attention. Such advice was personally given to me by Kostya Kakusha (the author of the blog 'About Photo'), but instead you can write' Master any RAW converter well '. You can do wonders with your photos in a RAW converter. The huge amount of information in RAW files can 'manifest' incredible improvements to the original photo.

Learn Adobe Photoshop!

Modern photography is tied to the processing of photographs. No one needs a raw result. No photoshop anywhere. Such a trend and point.

End the 'Nikon or Canon?' Question!

The correct answer for commercial photography to 'Nikon or Canon' is always the same - 'money'. If there is a lot of money, then it doesn’t matter if it’s Nikon or Canon. Absolutely unlimited possibilities of TOP cameras and lenses solve any photo tasks. If the Nikon D5 / Canon 1DX Mark II cannot solve the problem, then a device inside the photographer's skull comes to the rescue. The brand that is beneficial to the photographer or agency is used. But if there is not enough money, then you will definitely fall for one of the hooks of marketers (for example, the color from fuji!).

The main idea of this advice is not to think 'Nikon' or 'Canon', but think 'how to make money'. Since someone called himself a professional photographer, then photography is his profession, the profession is needed to do the job and receive material rewards.

Print photo books! Print photos!

Once a client asked me if I print photobooks? Since then, I have printed about 500 different photobooks (and the circulation of one book could be several copies). I've tried a lot of photo labs and had both good and negative photo printing experiences. In photographic printing, pictures look different than on a computer monitor. A photo book for a huge number of shootings is an indispensable attribute of a quality service.

Work on the little things, work with people!

Photographer provides photo services. These services must be of high quality! Quality must be everything! Every little thing should be done perfectly. It is very important to provide quality customer support throughout the filming process.

Do not tell about your photo equipment! Your photos should speak for you!

In more detail, the client should be distanced from those techniques and the photographic equipment that is used for shooting. As in the case of the magician, the photographer must have his own tricks, his cameras with 'mirrors' from which the bird / rabbit flies out.

A professional knows his limits!

This is an important tip. The main difference between a professional and a layman is that the first clearly knows his boundaries and capabilities, does not overstep their line. In the photo it is expressed simply: if you do not know how to shoot something, do not take money for it. Some things need to be filmed for free at first.

Create a place where your portfolio will be collected!

There should be a place where you can get acquainted with the work of the photographer. This place needs to be closely monitored, constantly improved, cleaned and renewed. If someone thinks that he has good photos in his portfolio, invite a TOP photographer from your city to your home or office, pay him hours of consultation, discuss the portfolio and you will understand how much more work remains to be done to improve your skills and improve the quality of your images.

Banalism: read, study, watch, learn new things, go to paid MKs, improve!

Self-improvement, self-development and self-expression in photography are limitless. Technique comes and goes, experience remains. Develop your skills. For example, today I found out that with one shutter release you can immediately get more than 8 pictures on a USB flash drive (now suffer from trying to guess how I did it!), And also read the website Phil borges. And so something new is constantly being learned.

Thank you for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

Good advice from a good person :) And everything is clear and understandable. It's a pity, because of laziness, I cannot follow even half of these practical advice ...

    • anonym

Similarly! Laziness mother was born before us :)))

    • Wacom

Strange .. I am also lazy, and at the same time I could not find any of these tips, which I would greatly interfere with my laziness to follow.
Good advice and tested by practice and time!

      • Pastor

“Print photobooks! Print photos! ”. This is both time and money - too lazy to study. I understand that there will be more use from photo books than from files on a computer, but there is no time to do this.
“Create a place where your portfolio will be collected!”. This is a long time. Going through a couple of terabytes of photos in order to choose two or three dozen worthwhile ones is very stressful for me. If I don’t do important filming, then I usually upload a photo to my computer every 2-3 months from all cameras at once. And that too lazy to disassemble it happens, threw it off, looked and that's it.
"Trivial: read, learn, watch, learn new things, go to paid MK, improve!" Going to the MK means spending a lot of time; it can be lazy to study some aspects of the photo properly.
Well, to shoot at equal laziness, because the equal implies at least some kind of processing and development. And I'd rather take pictures in my free time than sort out pictures - I'm such a lover of the process, not the result :)
Well, it should be noted that these are tips for professionals, and I'm an amateur. I am sure that if I made money with photography, laziness would quickly disappear and I would definitely follow all the advice in the article.

        • Arkady Shapoval

If you are too lazy to do something for your business - do you love it so much?

          • Pastor

No, of course, that's right. I'm not too lazy to study with children, I'm not too lazy to go to workouts, I'm not too lazy to take pictures. But to disassemble photos and spend days on end processing laziness - I do not like this business at all :)

            • Sergei

I got the opinion that you just like to press a button)

              • Victoria

                Similarly.

  • Vladimir

Experience is priceless when there is no one to convey it. :)

  • Sergei

    Interesting…. Thank you so much… ?

  • Lynx

    about fuji funny. )))

  • Lynx

but about dormouse - nothing ((

    • anonym

      yes because they already snickered

      • Wacom

If this is about Nikon and Kenon, then I agree!
Sony - great cameras! Fuji - even better! And Leika is such a wonderful thing. )))

  • Nikolaitch

    Classic decency !!!)))))

  • zengarden

    > But if the money is not enough, then you will definitely fall for some of the hooks of marketers (for example, the color from fuji!).
So, gentlemen rogue :) you are on the hook of marketers! and everyone else is captured by stereotypes ...

    • Sergey

Yes, we are all on the hook of the market bugs.
Here is a striking example. Everyone blames Nikon for the non-fake color of the camera DPEG on modern cameras with CMOS sensors. And why then does the color become feng shui on Nikon DF with the same CMOS matrix ?! Why is Nikon D4 immediately the owner of this color ?! I give the tooth that the point here is in the software part, in which they simply cut functionality and simplified work algorithms to a minimum.

      • Sergey

I will supplement myself. Using the PictureControl utility, you can immediately improve the camera JPGs.
Because right now I can’t repeat the same frame with different PictureControl settings, I will show three frames converted from RAV to CaptureNX with different Standard profile settings.
        First frame - quick setting - 0.
The result is almost equivalent to a chamber RPG.

        • Lynx

a minute in Photoshop from your first jeep, basic photo correction.
          without any utilities and rabbis.
Rav without a result different from the jeep is empty pathos.

          • Sergey

Actually, I led to the fact that a similar result can be achieved using camera settings without the participation of Photoshop and the Rav Converter.

            • Lynx

              it is impossible.
your result is not the same, just peers into the water and the shadows in the foam

          • anonym

            Nightmare

            • Lynx

              • anonym

It's like in history: do you have hot water? Yes, there is, but I’ll still wash everything cold !!! PATAMUSHA so right.
Really, why RAW? I’d better produce jpg and throw 9 out of 10 into the basket :) But without converters

          • anonym

Even Ken Rockwell himself saws jpegs on his website through perfectly clear, which ignites contrast and makes the image not so flat. And you argue here)
JPEG can be turned into film only through picture control. But who guarantees that there will be the right balance of light and shadow? For example.

            • anonym

It's always puzzling when “enhancements” are done with contrast, trying to add dimension to the image.

            • Lynx

A person who believes that the jeepeg is turning into a film through the control pitcher is not worth arguing, but even telling something to no avail - = just wasting time.

            • NE

              Saint Ken Rockwell?

      • Sergey

The first frame - quick setup - -2.

      • Sergey

The third frame - quick setup - +2.
The picture immediately became brighter, more colorful ...

        • anonym

Yes, you can do it like that. If the color of the sky and the eerie vignette does not bother :))

        • Yarkiya

I bet that most non-sophisticated viewers will like this option more. So RAW + Photoshop.

          • anonym

Yah! This is the cry of the soul) Still only felt-tip pens :)))

            • Wacom

Have you been in the sea for a long time? There it is, on a nice sunny day ..

          • anonym

Mm-yes-ah. Somehow poisonous. Overkill. But we live in free countries and, therefore, who loves what ...

          • Lynx

water and sand are good, but the sky would have to be muffled with a mask, otherwise it is poisonous.

            • anonym

Is the water and sand good? Really? Nda ... The hostess on the table had the best grapes :)) A certain white strip is especially good, which in the original was once a wave of foam)))

              • Lynx

                Anonymous is worse ...

              • Lynx

about the foam, not a word was said by the way

              • Yarkiya

What do you want from a jeep taken off the screen? In addition, this is not even processing, but a couple of clicks in the LAB.

              • anonym

Well, essno, Anonymous is worse :) PATAMUSHA spent as much as 6 seconds in ACR, correcting the histogram. And at the same time from the same “screen”, without touching the original idea of the author at all)
I agree, everything is subjective. Theoretically, you can make a little warmer picture without disturbing the balance. For an amateur. But why should you drive green water into frankly red, even if you suddenly for a moment believe that the sand was of this color? Well, water doesn’t refract :)) In addition to psychedelia, common sense should also be :))

              • anonym

Oops ... Sovramshi :( In addition to editing the histogram, I also managed to remove the vignette during this time.

          • Paltos

No, well, why are you doing this to me .... Now I want to go to the sea ... (((

          • Nikonian

            In my opinion ...

  • anonym

I will invest my 5 cents:
    1. Only RAW! The result will ALWAYS be better.
    2. Capture One is better than Lightroom.
    3. Photoshop - of course, just don't overdo it!
    4. Nikon - all other things being equal, it is better! Just a fact.
    5. Photo printing is difficult (read - impossible) to obtain a result identical in color and quality as on the monitor.
    6. Quality services are only the key to inner balance. Often, “and so it will do!” Is enough for clients. What is sad - few people (read - no one) will appreciate your talents at their true worth ...
    7. The technique must be good! Then it is worth mentioning about it ... The artistic taste of clients is so-so, and "parrots" are always good! (watch ads). And it’s very unpleasant when hiring a “professional” you get frames that can only be printed only 10x15. Or there is no bokeh at all, because 18-55 ...
    8. Take on any INTERESTING project! It's better than filming stereotyped scenes. Always take many shots, including with different settings. There will always be good pictures. If you understand that the photo session is interesting and useful for you, you can not take money. Happiness is not in them!
    9. It is better to organize the portfolio electronically on the website or in social networks. But from a QUALITY paper - the effect is greater!
    10. Take pictures, analyze, think! Professional courses will not help you creatively. Only (perhaps) will suggest some technical aspects. If there is no talent, all that remains is to copy other people's techniques and adapt to the customer ...

PS. Good technology and adequate clients to all real photographers!

    • Ivan

I’ll attach my 1 penny to your 5. (Not a professional photographer, I’m shooting only for myself, only creative projects). I write only to myself and only advice to myself to myself, i.e. the wildest IMHO:
      1. Jpeg only! Took off badly - add to the basket, learn to shoot well.
      2. Tighten the lights / colors by 5-10% - no matter which program.
      3. Ps me unnecessarily - I don't do collages.
      4. Canon only. Once again, Nikona will have to get rid of it at flea markets for a long time and look for a suitable camera.
      5. Getting typed is very helpful.
      6. Do not withdraw for money.
      7. The equipment should be good, but it is better to talk about it only with the seller of equipment.
      8. Only take on the project for which there is enough time.
      9. It is better to organize the portfolio with a time guide - to see where you are rolling.
      10. Look more around, at your old work, at other people's work.
      11. When shooting, always analyze the pictures on the monitor, only after unequivocal approval, go to the next scene or remove the camera.
      12. The camera is always with you.
      13. No matter where you are, feel free to take a picture if you see a frame.
      14. One scene is not enough for a picture
      15. One color is not enough for a picture.
      16. One composition for a picture is enough! The main thing is not to spoil the plot.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        Thank:)

      • Lynx

        Thanks, neighing. )))

        • Ivan

          Glad I am entertained!

      • Lynx

        1. uncompromising categoricalness is a sign of stupidity.
        2. The question is how, and why, and not where.
        3. "ps only for collages" - blondes think so.
        4. simply stupid
        5. Who is useful?
        6. Rashap just laughs at this comment. Vancog is crying.
        7. The technique must meet the task, and nothing more. And you can even talk about it with the conductor. If you are able to certainly keep up the conversation.
        8. Show me a person who is able to evaluate at the initial stage the time for a suitable creative project.
        9. You can only roll to the bottom.
        10. When crossing the street, look left if you are not in England or New Zealand.
        11. If you don't know what you've shot, without staring at the monitor for half an hour, it means you're a blonde staring at the monitor.
        12. and in the toilet too.
        13. Go to the intensive care unit in pediatric oncology several times and repeat.
        14. The scrapers laugh at it.
        15. Kosenko does not understand what you mean.
        16. the bride-in-the-palm is your choice and the limit of development.

        • Ivan

          Dear Lynx!
I sincerely agree with you, on most points, in part - even changed my mind on some. I'm surprised that they are interested in this discussion, and, if so, I will answer:
          1. Yes, that's right. However, you must admit that the funds should be proportionate to the goals. I don’t agree to waste time editing pictures on my computer. Considering that I shoot only for myself, “on the table”, and I don’t really owe anyone, Jpeg suits me. I'm not saying that RAW is worse, I'm saying that it doesn't suit me.
          2. True, of course. But, since I do not see the difference in the result between light exposure compensation in lightroom and, say, asidsipro, I will do it where it is convenient for me.
          3. I exaggerated, of course. But I do not see in PS for myself prospects for improving the result.
          4. This is my experience. Nikons did not take root, categorically, Canon - I love.
          5. For the author.
          6. Again, my experience. I started to shoot for money - I ran out of ideas and generally worthwhile work. If he stopped, it started. Conclusion - no need to mix.
          7. Exactly. But often talking about technology is a waste of time.
          8. approximately. This is a personal matter of time management.
          9. In fact - found fault with the word. I meant the direction of my development.
          10. Thank you, I will consider if I go.
          11. Not half an hour, but you need to look 2-10 seconds.
          12. You will laugh, once from the pipes and valves something happened in the picture.
          13. You are right, rethought. But, however, has never been in oncology.
          14. Well, and they laugh at them all the time - "a joke, they say it prolongs life, Mr. Baron."
          15. I will look at his work, thanks for the tip.
          16. I do not rent a wedding or people. Well, people sometimes skip, unfortunately, but as a backdrop.

          • Lynx

            1. Look at the discussion with Sergey about processing above.
It took me no more than 2 minutes to process the image, including saving files, and it was practically a "screen from the monitor".
2,3,5,6,8,11,12,16. go to normal art courses. and photo processing. I highly recommend Alexey Shadrin and Sasha Chaldryan.
            4. see the first paragraph.
            13. The issue of ethics in documentary photography is extremely complex.
            14. "Who are the judges?"

            • Ivan

              1. I agree that this frame has become much better. Another thing is that I would not have made such a shot.
2,3,5,6,8,11,12,16. Thank you, I'll see who they are. However, it seems to me that for the development of “art” in oneself, it is enough only to perceive the surrounding world, as well as to perceive the results and the process of not one's own creative activity. And photo processing still doesn't look promising to me, sorry.
              13. Extremely, this is true. This is generally a topic for extensive discussion.
              14. Well, the artistic taste, probably, of every person is a judge. I looked at the lomography inattentively, of course, but I never saw anything interesting there. As a hobby - a pleasant activity, perhaps. As a serious creative activity with a claim to art, in my opinion, it is rubbish.

              • anonym

Brevity is the sister of talent :)) You explained all your 16 points with this photo alone :))

        • Valery A.

I'm going to shoot (try) a black square.

      • Oleg

Yes, about the basket is well noticed. Sometimes the best editor is the trash. As for the rav-jeepeg: If you are not going to process the photo in the future, if you are not involved in commercial photography, where each frame is important and do not like to break your eyes at the computer. That is quite suitable and jeep

        • anonym

If you are not going to process…, if you don’t study… and don’t love…, then the Sony xperia l25i will do just fine - as if there will be no problems with RAW-JPG and the basket can be safely filled “without fear and reproach”. But why shoot at all then? The mobile is our everything :)

          • Oleg

Each has its own niche. Someone earns a photograph, someone takes pictures for himself after work. If there are no difficult conditions, the jeep is quite suitable for itself. The camera allows you to get a good result. Slightly contrast, slightly tighten the shadows, it is quite suitable. There will not be much difference with RAV. It is not always necessary to change the photo until it is recognizable. And you, as I understand it, is one of those who removes the wildlife of Mongolia and publishes in the national geography

            • anonym

I won't even argue - everyone has different requests. But what prevents you from shooting “for yourself” after work and getting guaranteed good pictures, and not “what happens” with a DSLR camera? Moreover, we still returned to the topic “... slightly contrast, slightly tighten the shadows ...” So we are still talking about the need for minimal processing. So why give up in advance the opportunity to slowly correct with your hands what you missed when shooting? RAW gives you much more chances to fix your bugs and save the basket from really interesting shots - after all, you don't always have the time and opportunity to tinker with the settings with unexpected interesting scenes :))
And yes, I was not in Mongolia. Somehow it did not work out))) I prefer the islands :)))

            • anonym

In order not to shake the air.
Here is an example where you could poke your nose in the hour and think about the camera settings. It was really theoretically possible to get by and JPG

            • anonym

But the situation when I had to shoot with what was exposed on the camera without looking. If not for RAW, it would have gone to the basket.

It doesn’t matter whether you are renting a house or for National Geographic. Why not try to do better :))

            • anonym

And yes, to round off, otherwise “Ostap has suffered”: a very valuable property of RAW is precisely that it can be postponed with a clear conscience for “later” and return to it when your level of knowledge and processing competencies allows you to do it more qualitatively.

    • Lynx

5 kopecks by now is a useless thing, you can't even buy matches.

      • Dim

        5. Photo printing is difficult (read - impossible) to obtain a result identical in color and quality, as on a monitor.
        ...
        10. Look more around, at your old work, at other people's work.
        12. The camera is always with you.
        13. No matter where you are, feel free to take a picture if you see a frame.
Here with this I can agree. Although translating creativity into slogans is somehow rude, how laughed out loud in church. Rather, such nicks should be characteristic of the artisan, not the artist.

        • Lynx

10 calibrate monitors and printing, and you will be happy.
          11. Better include brains.
          12. It is possible, but eventually it is not necessary, unless you are a street person or a hipster, and this is generally trampled upon from the "subtracted slogans of photographers."
          13. The issue of ethics is a very important issue. Sit a couple of days in the palliative ward in oncology and say it again.
          ..........
and what's wrong with the craft of photography?

          • Ivan

There is nothing wrong with the craft of photography, as in the craft. As in photography, there are downsides to the craft of photography.

            • Dim

              1. A good monitor costs very good money, as does a calibration system - personally, I see no reason to waste that much money, there are better ways to spend it.
              2. It is impossible to calibrate printing in photo studios, to explain something there is a waste of precious free time that can be spent on photographing itself.
              ***
There is nothing wrong with the craft of photography, but art and craft are completely different things, the skills of a craftsman, as history shows, are not compatible with creativity, which is the basis of art.
Successful trading requires a state of mind different from that in which it arrives in creativity, to combine in one person so many sometimes opposing qualities (not so often encountered by themselves) is unrealistic. If I am not mistaken, there are a sufficient number of proverbs and sayings covering this topic.

I can't help but admire the Lynx ☺-person, which is quite obvious, for the first time in my life he hears about the differences between a creator and an artisan, and this is the material of literally the first chapters of any more or less worthwhile course in the history of art and immediately sends the person who enlightened him on this topic with heights of his academic career - 'read' Vrubel and 'teach' Vasnetsov. My applause. A fool does not teach - what a clever girl.

The case when reading commentators delivers more than an article. In the article, everything is right and I will do it right. But when amateurs start complementing the pros, throwing their pennies and loudly bursting bubbles in a puddle is very funny. : D

Many photographers (even without quotation marks) cannot accept the fact that the photo turns out the same colors as in reality; that's why they wind them up beyond recognition, but the picture turns out "bright and juicy, not like your zhypegi." The main thing is that people like this, and not natural. Take a rabbi, move the sliders, get a masterpiece! It's like a woman with and without makeup. Some people like glamor, while others like natural beauty.

      • Evgeny_d60

If a lover has a soap box, he either twists the colors or enjoys a bad picture. So there is a trend that owners of large cameras are starting to follow.

      • anonym

The paradigm is, in fact, correct, regarding glamor and nature, but I do not quite agree with the logic. It turns out that the root of evil is RAW, which is complete nonsense in its essence. Fans of “children's coloring” with acid colors kill JPG with the same great pleasure, transforming the picture into “bright and juicy” with light movements of the sliders in PS. That being said, JPG is much easier to turn into a nightmare than RAW. Yarkiy a little above a very revealing example of pop music did :) So it's not a matter of file format, to be fair, but rather of the creator's culture and aesthetics.

        • Yarkiya

In the hustle and bustle of days, a person has no time to contemplate around him in search of beauty, and the natural colors and shades of gray everyday life are so boring that seeing the holiday of the sun and life, albeit exaggerated, but such alluring shades of a fairy tale, he involuntarily says “wow”, “wow” And this impression will surely be written down somewhere in the subcortex, so that next time it will work automatically.

But so far I myself have not matured to this: (Here I tried (the background was too lazy, however, to clean it). Yes, and accessories are too lazy to overgrow - I have to shoot from my hands. Therefore, I use RAW)))

And why not an amateur to complement the pros? Pros understand that amateur advice comes from amateur tasks that are completely different. Amateurs often learn from the pros, but quickly realize that the path is different. The pros should give a predictable result, but the amateur is interested in trying new things every time, in case of failure he can delete everything.
Arcadia's tips for the pros, but they are interesting to everyone

  • Oleg

I will try to dig deeper, in vain in the root.

    1. Unity and the struggle of opposites
    2. The transition of quantitative changes to qualitative
    3 negation of negation
    4. The dialectical triad

    • anonym

Ltd! The man from our sandbox! Give creative freedom!

  • Oleg

Well, I hope dialectical materialism is appropriate. Although we are followers of various religious faiths (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, etc.) :)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

      It is appropriate :)

  • Lynx

ALWAYS check the technique before going out and shooting.
ALWAYS have spare parts for consumables - batteries, cards, business cards.
ALWAYS have a clean handkerchief with you.

    • Oleg

The first shooting rule in the city:
I saw the toilet - go.

      • Lynx

well, it’s like someone with a bladder and infections.

        • Oleg

It was a joke, if that.
          Visa card and a scarf?

          • Anonymous # 2

A scarf in your breast pocket and voila - you are a snob.
A business card can be inserted spontaneously interested passerby, or you can attach to the flash with a rubber band as a reflector.

          • Lynx

A handkerchief, or even better a pack of wet and dry napkins, is a necessary tool for shooting, from removing labor sweat from the forehead to wiping the hands of a model climbing on some rusty piece of iron.
A piece is no less useful and necessary than a knife.
            .......
business cards amazingly help to establish contact with people around you, including those you shoot. it clearly shows that you are not a pervert maniac .... well and further down the list.

            • zengarden

Well, if the business card says that you are NOT a pervert maniac, then many immediately lose interest ...

              • Lynx

                ahaha ... nice

              • Dim

                - Kolya, what did you learn from the lesson?
                - That the Communist Party is not Slavin's name.
And still a real photographer will NEVER fit on a support of a line that is energized and does not allow others.

  • Daniel

The topic is interesting, there is something to ponder. Arcadia’s advice is designed primarily for professional photographers, but not every amateur photographer has the opportunity or desire to become a professional, i.e. make a living by photography. What to advise them, lovers for whom photography is not a business, but a hobby, or an activity for the soul? It seems to me that tips should be more universal and less categorical, for example, like this:

    1. Start shooting, no matter what, no matter what, where and how, just try it.

    2. If you become interested and you get a taste, don't stop, photography is not a drug and will not harm your health, and there are no unnecessary knowledge and skills, everything can be useful in life.

    3. If you want to succeed, be ready to make an effort, study the theory of photography, photographic equipment, improve practical photography techniques in various conditions.

    4. Do not be afraid of mistakes and failures, do not give in to criticism, remember - the road will be mastered by the walker.

    5. Do not count on quick results, nothing is given for nothing, mastery comes with years of hard work, trial and error. Even if you have the photographer’s frenzied talent, the talent should be further developed and improved, i.e. work on yourself.

    6. If you decide to become a professional photographer, be prepared for serious financial investments in your business. Professional tasks require professional tools, but they are not cheap. At a minimum, you need a powerful computer, a good large monitor, sharpened for graphics processing, a professional scanner, a photo printer, of course a DSLR, and there may be more than one, interchangeable optics, a solid high-quality compact with universal zoom, an external flash. What exactly you need, as a professional, you must know yourself, if you do not know, then you are not a professional yet.

    7. If you decide to remain an amateur, you still need high-quality photographic equipment to develop your skills and expand opportunities, and therefore money to purchase it. Be ready to invest, but do not go beyond the limits of reasonable sufficiency, remember that even the “coolest” camera will not make you a “cool” photographer.

    8. The dispute on the topic “Nikon or Canon” does not make sense either for an amateur or a professional (albeit for various reasons). For an amateur, it is important that the level of his photographic equipment approximately corresponds to the level of the achieved mastery and does not much (just a little bit) exceed this level, it seems to be for growth. An amateur in the matter of choosing photographic equipment needs to soberly assess his strength and listen to the opinion of more experienced amateurs and professionals.

    9. The worst enemy of the amateur photographer is the idea of megapixel and rate of fire of the CTF that has become parasitic in the brain. All modern and even not very modern DSCs are quite megapixel and fast enough, so an amateur should pick up courage when choosing a camera and, in principle, not read the corresponding section of the instruction.

    10. Whether you are a professional or an amateur - respect yourself, your client and viewer, do not hack, do not allow an open marriage in your work. Remember, Photoshop and RAW Converter will not replace strong skillful hands, an artistic view of things, knowledge of theory and mat. parts, i.e. the actual camera.

    11. If you are a amateur photographer, strive to surpass the professional, precisely because you are an amateur, i.e. love and know how to shoot.

    12. If you are a professional, be careful not to become a craftsman, try to maintain a love of photography as an art, remain an amateur in the good sense of the word, remember that not everything in this world can and should be valued solely in monetary terms.

    Dust:

Once, they invited me to take pictures of graduates. It turned out that especially fastidious girls ordered an additional Professional Photographer. To create a Photobook. I was only allowed to cover the portrait and the general. Uncle has arrived. Well, I think I was lucky! I'll chat with the pros! I ask: "Which camera?", "1D!" He replies proudly. I think it's cool! Where can I get to him with my Nikon D90 + 85 / 1.8. Slightly shifted on general topics ... He took a background from his big bag, two pulsed light sources and ... (he could not see the marking, but something like) CANON 600D and 18-55! He sat down on a chair and began to REMOVE! Needless to say, the girls were very “satisfied” with the result. They thought that if a person calls himself a professional, this is so. I did not see the book, this shame was not shown to me, but I got a few photos on social networks: f8, clothespins of the background in the background, strange angles, etc. Only the pulsed light somehow distinguished the photo from the mass of ordinary amateur ones. And then I realized that my level is very, very good! "It is not the gods who burn the pots!" Yes, I do not have enough D810, yes, I do not have enough PR, but still I am Handsome!

    Morality:

Many professionals are not professionals at all! And many amateurs are no longer amateurs! It's just that not everyone has an understanding of a quality result! For many, just a sharp (across the frame) photos are enough. And a professional for them is a guy with a big camera (it doesn't matter that he bought it a month ago). Each has its own truth ...

    • Max

Cool, rub a story bro, to tears ...

    • Pastor

Pros are just people who take photographs for money. And as in other professions, photography is full of mediocrity and even idlers and fools. And if such people in photography are simply all the same, then such underdogs in medicine or education are much more frightening.
And yes, you are right, often for the money it turns out worse than if a simple amateur was shooting. Again, there is a nuance of similarities to other professions. There are doctors who follow all research, try to make the most of the latest technologies, take courses and improve their qualifications. There are those who wanted to spit on education after university - they say, they have already graduated, that's enough. And photography is often not taught. They just buy a simpler camera and shoot. I've also come across the pros shooting pretty lousy for money and cheap, simple equipment. A couple of years ago, at his brother's wedding, such a pro offered to shoot the ceremony “only” for 500 thousand on his 18d + 55-3.
Actually, this also happens in a report - I see reporters filming with whale zooms on the initial cameras. And so-so pictures come out. At the same time, they insolently climb into the thick of the event, where ordinary people cannot enter. And I, with noticeably more expensive equipment and with my own interest in getting good pictures, stand in the crowd, and these pros with initial cameras and without any interest in shooting dangle in front of me and block the view. This greatly worries me personally, I think other spectators are also worried about the back of such a pro who closes all the action.
Thank God, there are many photographers who, like other good pros in their professions, learn new things, use good technique and always give excellent results.

      • Lynx

but here we have a man who is sure that the pros must have a cool technique, and the whale is for beginners.

        • Pastor

Not required, but more often it is. I have not seen photographers at political summits with whales, mostly these are the top Nikon and Canon lenses. Also, serious wedding men, even at the regional level, are filmed for more serious optics. I’m not talking about higher level wedding men. Well, landscape painters, portrait painters also have their own lenses, without using a whale. And if the whale can still be used for the landscape, then for the portrait it is much more difficult, you yourself know why. For reporting, the speed of the whale is not enough, and it does not differ in reliability. And reliability is not only needed in reporting. A light blow or just frequent use can disable the whale, while profiled lenses endure prolonged use and even very noticeable bumps and drops. In addition, for the pros it is often important to be able to shoot at any time, whether it be a sunny day or a night shower, and here again, lens protection is needed and a high aperture is highly desirable.
So, of course, no one owes anything to anyone, but the fact remains that most of the pros use professional equipment. The same carcasses, for example. Two pros on the report from 500d and 7dm2 will shoot completely different reports, because autofocus speed, ease of control and shooting speed are very important here. For an amateur it is not necessary to catch every moment, but for a professional it is important. Now in RIO everyone uses 1dx2, 5dsr, d5 and other top-end carcasses. And glasses, respectively - 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 300, 400, 500, 600 (if you believe the photographs of their equipment and interviews). That is, they have only top-end optics and carcasses, no whales and initial cameras.
On the other hand, this does not completely cancel the fact that give a good pro a whale in his hands and he will do fine giving the result better than a beginner with a top-end set of equipment. DigitalTV has an excellent selection of videos about how professionals are given some very miserable cameras and nevertheless they give out a very suitable picture. The last time the landscapes were filmed on an old Nikon compact with 3 megapixels, something like my coolpix 990. And the landscapes came out quite suitable. Nevertheless, this pro himself does not take off for the initial set, but for the d810 with a set of decent expensive lenses. So yes, pros most often can do a lot on a whale, but they work with serious equipment.

          • Lynx

A good photographer differs from a novice in that he can shoot on a variety of equipment.
and most often it is he, and not the equipment, that gives the result of the shooting. Professional equipment is simply more convenient and reliable, has a wide range of possibilities ”.
But to judge whether a professional person or a “niprof” by the presence of a top-end glass is amateurishness.

            • Pastor

Then I am an amateur, there is much to learn :)

              • anonym

that's when you learn to shoot on KIT, like a pro on the Elks, you can assume that they have reached their level)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

White balance bracketing on some cameras. For example, on the same Nikon d700, you can make a fork of 9 shots. One shutter release is done - 9 JPEG files are recorded on the memory card with different WB values.

  • Ivan

Good all the time of day!
Please tell me where can I find the camera profile in Lightroom for nikon d7200?

  • Dmitriy

Good day! In fact, I am a camera user, but I want to add something to the topic of the article.
Want to learn how to take pictures? Take pictures! Somewhere in the depths of the Internet, I read the thought: the opportunity to take the best shot appears when the camera is ... at home! You can memorize all the settings of photographic equipment, pronounce by heart a number of standard apertures in both directions, immediately calculate the distance of the hyperfocal, but ... the sense of all this is exactly zero without constant practice.
And vice versa: a newcomer purchases the first CZK, even after brainwashing by marketing specialists. WOW! What pictures! And there are many automatic settings, convenient! But, if only after a couple of months the camera is not cast as an unnecessary toy, after ten thousand frames he begins to notice that he wants better quality! And the sharpness at the edges is not enough, and the aberration of the eye cut! And in general: on forums people with the same technique spread such masterpieces! And he will inevitably come to what Arkady is trying to convey with our articles to our brains!
Carry your camera with you wherever you can! Shoot everything that seems interesting! Do not be afraid that the result at first seems terrible. With practice, experience and skill will come! Give it a try! Experiment!
Many thanks to Arkady for his work! Very few resources exist where everything is explained so simply and easily!

  • Pavel Bannikov

Arkady, tell us how you started to print your pictures? I could not find an article on this topic on the site. Literally today, for the first time, I printed my photo and a picture that played so nicely on the monitor in a photoshoot, now causing an attack of epilepsy))))
What questions should be asked to a salon employee in order to expect good quality images? Or spit and buy home expensive equipment to print for yourself?
    Thank you in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I started with a 6-color photo printer and dances with a tambourine to get a good color on A4. Then he printed about 3000 pictures on it in order to understand something. In general, I print a lot of photobooks for clients in photo laboratories, usually everything is buzzing there. If the photo on the monitor is the same as when printing - the photo lab is good, otherwise it is bad. If the monitor is some kind of frail, laptop, on a TN matrix, then it will not work to achieve coincidence of prints.

  • Dmitriy

The same is now faced with a color rendering problem. I master RAW processing forcedly on a laptop. And when viewing photos, for example at work, on whiter or less decent monitors, the result is far from always acceptable. Although I noticed that if the picture was really successfully taken, then it looks on any screen. I straighten my hands slowly. :)
I’m keeping silent about attempts to print on a home four-color printer.

  • Koba

I myself have been engaged in the prepress preparation of glossy magazines for a long time, well, color separation and so on ... Of course, you can achieve full color matching on the monitor and on the prints (visually, of course, not technically, not 100%), but to do all this you need to have the appropriate technique, that is, a monitor with 10 or more bit color (the corresponding board must be installed there), as well as with a better matrix so that it can be calibrated. All this is easier on Mac, since the OS has a built-in system of end-to-end color management, and this system is directly supported by all programs. You can achieve all this at the ZS, but somehow we at the publishing house tormented this and after long attempts gave up this business, although later more advanced calibration systems and new OSs from Microsofe came out and I think that now all this can be done relatively simply. It is also possible to calibrate the printer, and personally I somehow calibrated it, for the sake of interest, spent about a week on it, the result was amazing, but on Mac I achieved it for a couple of hours. Recently, I have not been campaigning for Mac, I sent him to hell, since everything is too expensive, Apple rips off a lot of money for all this ... By the way, in order to achieve color matching, you first need to master the techniques of color correction, which is not at all easy, but quite possibly, take a wonderful book by Margulis and even get something digestible from a frank marriage. The debate that choosing Canon or Nikon does not make any sense, unless only because Canon can be sold faster and lose less money, society is bombarded with manufacturing companies and of course it agrees with their marketing, although they have really good options for technology. For the last 2 weeks a friend has lent me a new Pentax K-1 with theirs 24-70 / 2,8. Just a great camera, after that it's hard to go back to other cameras like my Canon 5D3. Are you surprised? Kenon's terrible banding is contrasted with a terribly clean picture, amenable to any processing, low noise, with the widest DD, etc. Autofocus system? The new pentax has it many times better than the 5D3, and in the dark, the canon simply fades. Surprised again? And all this can be bought for exactly half the price of 5D3 + Canon 24-70 / 2.8. By the way, the Pentax is completely dust and moisture resistant, in addition, and has a fluttering illumination of the buttons and the bayonet ... This is me to show the senselessness of disputes about technology and color ...
