In short

The Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO is a professional versatile zoom lens for full frame cameras. Possesses super quality case.

The image quality is controversial, has extraordinary artistic characteristics, but suffers from poor sharpness at open apertures.

Unlike other fast universal lenses of the 24 (28) -70 / 2.8 class, the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO attracts with an additional 5-10 mm at the long end. But do not forget that the longest is still Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D.

History

There are a fairly large number of such lenses from Tokina. The difficulty in identifying a particular instance is due to the fact that some of them are very similar in appearance, and lenses were marked differently for different countries. For some lenses (depending on the target country), the maximum aperture F / 2.6 for 28 mm focal length.

The evolution of Tokina Class 24 (28) -70 (80) /2.8 (2.6-2.8) lenses:

  1. Tokina AT-X AF 28-70mm 1: 2.8 - orange border near the front lens, filter diameter 72 mm, focusing is not internal. Window focusing distances. The name on the box is Tokina AT-X 270 AF.
  2. Tokina AT-X PRO AF 28-70mm 1: 2.6-2.8 (1: 2.8) - marking '1: 2.8' for Japan, marking '1: 2.6-2.8' for other countries, filter diameter 77 mm, internal focusing. The hood is threaded. Without a window of focusing distances, a gold border near the front lens. The name on the box is Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO. You can distinguish on these signs of.
  3. Tokina AT-X PRO 28-70mm 1: 2.6-2.8 (1: 2.8) - marking '1: 2.8' for Japan, marking '1: 2.6-2.8' for other countries, filter diameter 77 mm. Externally similar to the previous version, but there is no 'Tokina' lettering near the front lens, and the hood is bayonet type. The version is commonly referred to as 'AT-X PRO II'. Name on the box Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO II. You can distinguish on these signs of.
  4. Tokina AT-X PRO 28-80 1: 2.8 Aspherical - a window of a focus scale, a gold border near the front lens. The name on the box is Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO. There is a subversion with a gold nameplate with the name of the lens and other enlightenment.
  5. Tokina AT-X PRO SV 28-70mm 1: 2.8 (also called Tokina AT-X 287 PRO SV) - easily recognized by the 'PRO SV' prefix. Name on the box Tokina AT-X 287 AF PRO SV.
  6. Tokina SD 24-70 F2.8 (IF) FX AT-X PRO Aspherical - easy to find by focal lengths. Has a built-in focus motor. Name on the box Tokina AT-X 24 ~ 70mm F2.8 PRO FX

As indicated above, the versions of Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO and Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO II exist in two versions: '1: 2.8' and '1: 2.6-2.8' and are quite similar to each other. The easiest way to distinguish between 'PRO' and 'PRO II' is by the inscription 'TOKINA' near the front lens and the presence of fasteners for the bayonet hood:

Most likely, the optical design of this lens is a recycling of the design of the previous lens. There is reliable information that the creator of the scheme is the legendary Angenieux (Angenjo).

Assembly

The assembly is super high quality, without any comments. The mount is made of chrome-plated brass. The inner frame is made of duralumin. The rest of the parts are made of durable composite materials. This is exactly the lens that I do not want to let go.

True, I could not find reliable information on all-weather protection, and most likely the lens does not have any additional protection against bad weather conditions or dust / dirt.

The body coating is very similar to Nikon's old professional lenses (e.g. Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 MKII) The rubber bands of the focus ring and zoom are pleasant to the touch.

When the focal length is changed, the front lens moves in a wave-like manner, but does not extend beyond the hood mounting ring, and therefore does not increase the overall dimensions of the lens. The maximum depth of the lens is available at 50mm focal length and focusing at infinity. The front lens is moved as close as possible to the edge of the body frame at a 28 mm focal length and focusing on the MDF. We can say that the lens has internal focusing and internal zoom and does not change its dimensions. The rear lens moves during focal length changes.

Unlike the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO, the original Nikon / Canon lenses of class 24 (28) -70 / 2.8 have a movable front part of the body frame (trunk), which does not look as stylish as the internal zoom of the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO.

Tokina AT-X 280AF PRO

Tokina AT-X 280AF PRO

Focusing

The lens focuses quickly enough. In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates 90 degrees. During automatic focusing, the focus ring remains stationary, it is convenient to support the lens behind it, while the ring can rotate smoothly by hand without restrictions in any direction.

If there are reviews on the Internet about slow focusing, then we are talking about a lens option for the Canon system.

There is a special Tokyo-based AF / MF One-touch focus clutch switch (one-touch focus mode switch). The switch is quite convenient. To switch between focus modes, just pull the focus ring toward the bayonet mount or front lens.

A copy from the review on the camera Nikon D700 sometimes focuses behind the subject (back focus). But, in general, I did not observe any special problems with focusing.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Image quality

The lens is very weak at 80mm and f / 2.8, the so-called 'Tokin software' comes into play here. In the 35-80 mm range, software is also present. When you close the diaphragm, some of the software remains. From an aperture of f / 4, the lens becomes pleasantly sharp. With F / 5.6, I have practically no complaints about sharpness.

I would not use this lens as a lens for a wide range of tasks, but would only take it for some 'atmospheric' situations. At first, I even thought that the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO from the review was completely broken, so strong and unusual was the software, which resembled pictures with monocle. But, as it turned out, this is such a feature of similar Tokin lenses. As for the zoom lens, Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO can create a very nice picture, though unusual soft effect and a special Tokyo bokeh with luminous contours must be able to use.

In vignetting and distortion, the lens does not stand out in anything special - everything is within the normal range for this kind of optics. In the backlight and side light, the contrast drops sharply, you can catch a lot of glare and parasitic flares.

There is a lot of information on the network about Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO instances with very poor and very good image quality. Most likely the lens has a wide variation in quality, and also, perhaps, it was constantly being developed optically without official releases about new models.

For those looking for an inexpensive omnivorous station wagon for a wide range of tasks, I would recommend finding a successful instance Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09. Many times I met photographers who were unhappy with the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO and Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO. Some argued that there was some kind of disease in the optics of these models, which over time manifests itself in the alignment of lenses and the deterioration of image quality. You can write your thoughts on this in the comments on this review.

Results

The Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO is a well-built lens. It does not shine with optical indicators, the picture suffers from strong software at open apertures. There is probably a wide variation in the quality of individual specimens.

Comments: 102, on the topic: Tokina AT-X PRO 28-80 1: 2.8 Aspherical N / AIS review

  • Dmitriy

My 5 cents, the day before yesterday I bought a similar device for Sonya A77 $ namely
    Tokina 28-70 / 2.8 AT-X Pro, construct-FIRE!
2.8 - conditionally working (very soft), but on 3.2 it is already possible to take pictures, and from 4.0 - a razor., The color rendition is excellent, catches hares, but not critical ... I am very pleased with the glass, especially since I bought a used one in a state new) for only 5000 rubles.

    • Pokekmon

      2 Dmitry:
You are a bit mistaken about the topic by writing about 28-70 / 2.8 in the commentary on the 28-80 / 2.8 review.
All the same, the glasses are a little different.

    • EvAlex888

Zaitsev also needs to be caught sometimes. It’s not for him to run after them.

  • Pokekmon

Now I communicate with sellers about this glass and one of them amused me with this characteristic of this glass:
“Tokina GLOW is 2.8 like in 70s porn movies, very cinematic).
At 3.5, it is present in a minimal amount and is almost invisible. " :-)
I also talked with the Japanese, the owner of such a glass, which he uses on an old D3S.
He complained to me that this glass accentuates greens in the pictures.
I saw another Japanese girl taking pictures with Angenieux 28-70 / 2.8, which she made friends with D800E.
I even asked her again and she confirmed that it was Angenieux, and not something else.
Either she knows how to process pictures or I don't know ... but the picture is different. There is no software / soap and veil even on the open one (with D800E it shouldn't be ...). The picture is also different - somewhat similar to the film. Much more interesting than on Tokin 28-70 / 2.8.

  • Pokekmon

    It was possible to compare the 28-70 / 2.8 AT-X PRO II and the AT-X PRO 28-80 1: 2.8 Aspherical N / AIS.
The first one works with my camera is not very stable - as I wrote earlier, I have to constantly monitor the metering and set the -0.7EV correction, otherwise the camera tends to set a longer shutter speed in the aperture priority mode than necessary, and the picture becomes overexposed. Now I also noticed that the camera tends to lighten the first frame, and make the next a little more accurate (in the sense of a little darker). Sharpness floats - in the 0-35mm range it is maximum, 50-28mm less, 35-50mm even less. Checked on a closed diaphragm to 70.
At 28-80 / 2.8, you also have to track the metering. But the camera works with this glass a little more accurately and the -0.3EV corrections are more likely, while at 28-70 / 2.8 you need to set -0.7EV under the same conditions.
The sharpness of the 28-80 / 2.8 is slightly better than the 28-70 / 2.8.
Compared on fotkanii brick wall of the house opposite. The weight of files at 28-80 / 2.8 consistently turned out to be more. Sharpness in the range of 35-50mm is again maximum, at 28-35mm it is almost the same. At 50-80mm falls, and the more to 70-80mm, the more soap. Although the picture is not much worse than 28-70 / 2.8, in the range of 50-70mm. About the same.
In the range of 70-80mm, the 28-80 / 2.8 is noticeably lighter (more than 70mm for the 28-70 / 2.8) the picture - the shutter speed increases.
    28-80 / 2.8 is noticeably larger and heavier than 28-70 / 2.8.
    28-80 / 2.8 more emphasis on green than 28-70 / 2.8.
This was confirmed to me by the Japanese from the flikra, which uses 28-80 / 2.8 on the D3S.
Focusing is fast enough with both lenses, but 28-80 / 2.8 misses more often than 28-70 / 2.8. M. b. didn't work out with my camera - xs. The percentage of misses is small, but it is there.
I do not know what this is connected with. There seems to be no back / front focus with my camera. Specially rechecked.
At 28-80 / 2.8, it seemed to me that distortion was more and more unpleasant in the range of 28-35 mm than in 28-70 / 2.8 in the same range. The camera (old FF Nikon) does not automatically correct it.
The distortion is not as terrible as on the old Sigma 28-70 / 2.8, but it is very similar.
I forgot to add both at 28-70 / 2.8 and at 28-80 / 2.8 the aperture 2.8 is not working.
And there and there soap and a whitish “veil” (aka Tokina glow).
Everything becomes working on aperture 4 and above.

  • Andrei

Good afternoon, Arkady. I bought the same lens on Ebee from Japan. I liked the lens, but it has a color of enlightenment green (not purple as in your review) and a plate with the name of the lens is all completely golden. Is this some other modification of this lens?
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is the same Tokina as in this review. Over time, small decorative elements can change, the same applies to enlightenment. Green enlightenment is usually newer. The same is observed with Nikon lenses.

      • Andrei

        Got it. Thank.

    • Pokekmon

      2 Andrew:
      I also have green enlightenment at 28-80 / 2.8 :-)
The lens was purchased in Japan.

  • Alexander

Good afternoon. I bought a kind of lens on Ebay for 11k rubles. I just wanted him, the constructive is very convenient. But immediately disappointment - 28 went to the back, and 80 to the front. and of course a fotik would not be able to fix this. Knowing how he understands (was previously 28-70), he removed the aperture ring stopper, the zoom elastic band and the cap under this elastic band. and lo and behold - it turned out that a removable plate was lost, which gives indications of focus, corrected it (the old bolt attachment points are noticeable) and everything worked. Hooray)
    P_20180205_095121_1

    • DmitryK

I also have a bit of 28mm back focus.
True, when closing the diaphragm to 8-9, this is not visible due to horse sharpness.

  • Anatoly

I liked the photo - I'm thinking of buying such a lens for my pentax k5 camera !! s - but will he be friends on the crop? - from Japan now you can take for 13000r.

    • Zed

Somehow I came across the reviews of Tokin owners under your mount at the pentax club.
On older models like K20 everything seemed to work. 2.8 was not working, but this is the norm for these glasses.

  • DmitryK

Cyril, and on which carcass did you use this glass?

    • DmitryK

Cyril, thank you for the information, I won’t argue about 24-85, but I'm a little surprised about Nikkor 28-70 / 2.8)
Have you tried Tokin on another carcass after 50mm? Mb Is it the firmware of the camera or has it already been tried and did not help?

  • Denis

    Thanks for the review! Interesting.

  • Ivan Nikolaevich

    interesting colors ...

I bought this lens in 2016. I use it with D700. As one of the commentators correctly noted, it is ambiguous. Sometimes you are amazed at its sharpness, and sometimes it is annoying that the open hole is not usable beyond the 50mm focal length. I notice that there is not enough width by 28, I want 24.
But the focus is fast, accurate, well done - heavy, iron, not all of these tamrons with sigma.
But most likely, I’ll sell, I want 24-70, Nikkor is Nikkor.

By samples, the picture is of course rubbish, as for a staff with a “golden ring” :)

Arkady very mildly spoke of him as “a lens with software that you need to be able to use” (almost (c))

It is no coincidence that their price on the secondary market fluctuates around around FOUR cheaper than their own, 24-70.

Hello everybody! I don’t know if anyone noticed, but out of the multitude of lenses (short) from your reviews, I liked this “Tokina 28-80” more, precisely with its sharpness, even at the edges, and with an open aperture. In general, there is a wish when If you are testing short optics, then it would not hurt to take a couple of group shots. I mean, groups of people, like 10-15 people in a row. Then people will see for themselves what optics are and what they cost.

And why is there a photo that does not show the lower end of the lens? Can Tokina AF 28-80 f / 3.5-5.6 for Sony Alpha come up with NIKON? For some reason, there is no description anywhere, a review about this lens. Straight, it’s kind of secret for our reviewers.

If you have one, you can prepare a short review about it, I will post it. If he is for Sony, then Nikon is not suitable.

Tokina 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 is a very budget lens. It makes no sense to take it if Tokina 28-70 / 2.8 or Tokina 28-80 / 2.8 are sold nearby at a flea market not much more expensive.

What is known about the TOKINA 8mm F 1.2 lens? There is no information anywhere. Who knows about this? There is a thread connecting O-23mm.

Hello, I am very grateful to you for your work, this is the brightest and most informative site that I have met.

Yesterday Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO acquired this miracle glass !!! This is love at first sight !!! I got it completely new, the only one, the previous owner used it a couple of times and because of its weight and software put it for a long time in storage in general, he didn’t understand it, like many commentators here, but in vain !! 10000 tugriks weren’t a big amount, I decided to take experiments. Today I went out and shot 130 frames in RAW on different FRs, with different holes. It is soft, and not soap, in general, at all values, regardless of the FR, at all aperture values, to a greater or lesser extent, and, interestingly, there is no clear boundary for the depth of field, the blur tends to zero, turning into sharpness and again goes into blur, depending on the FR, with different intensities. So what I think about, this transition between blurring the foreground, the sharpness point and blurring the background again creates a soft effect, which is corrected in the editor by the sharpness slider. 130 photos 10 rejected from behind the front focus, shot a walking goal By, without turning on the tracking autofocus, it’s my fault !! The rest of the photos were brought in the editor to perfect, pixel-by-pixel sharpness !!! Yes, the lens is really sharp on all FRs, at all aperture values, the soft effect is a feature of this glass and can be easily treated in editor or used as a feature. Used Nikon D200. Sincere congratulations :) Can you prepare a gallery for d200 from this Tokina over time?
