In short

The Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO is a professional versatile zoom lens for full frame cameras. Possesses super quality case.

The image quality is controversial, has extraordinary artistic characteristics, but suffers from poor sharpness at open apertures.

Unlike other fast universal lenses of the 24 (28) -70 / 2.8 class, the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO attracts with an additional 5-10 mm at the long end. But do not forget that the longest is still Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D.

History

There are a fairly large number of such lenses from Tokina. The difficulty in identifying a particular instance is due to the fact that some of them are very similar in appearance, and lenses were marked differently for different countries. For some lenses (depending on the target country), the maximum aperture F / 2.6 for 28 mm focal length.

The evolution of Tokina Class 24 (28) -70 (80) /2.8 (2.6-2.8) lenses:

  1. Tokina AT-X AF 28-70mm 1: 2.8 - orange border near the front lens, filter diameter 72 mm, focusing is not internal. Window focusing distances. The name on the box is Tokina AT-X 270 AF.
  2. Tokina AT-X PRO AF 28-70mm 1: 2.6-2.8 (1: 2.8) - marking '1: 2.8' for Japan, marking '1: 2.6-2.8' for other countries, filter diameter 77 mm, internal focusing. The hood is threaded. Without a window of focusing distances, a gold border near the front lens. The name on the box is Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO. You can distinguish on these signs of.
  3. Tokina AT-X PRO 28-70mm 1: 2.6-2.8 (1: 2.8) - marking '1: 2.8' for Japan, marking '1: 2.6-2.8' for other countries, filter diameter 77 mm. Externally similar to the previous version, but there is no 'Tokina' lettering near the front lens, and the hood is bayonet type. The version is commonly referred to as 'AT-X PRO II'. Name on the box Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO II. You can distinguish on these signs of.
  4. Tokina AT-X PRO 28-80 1: 2.8 Aspherical - a window of a focus scale, a gold border near the front lens. The name on the box is Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO. There is a subversion with a gold nameplate with the name of the lens and other enlightenment.
  5. Tokina AT-X PRO SV 28-70mm 1: 2.8 (also called Tokina AT-X 287 PRO SV) - easily recognized by the 'PRO SV' prefix. Name on the box Tokina AT-X 287 AF PRO SV.
  6. Tokina SD 24-70 F2.8 (IF) FX AT-X PRO Aspherical - easy to find by focal lengths. Has a built-in focus motor. Name on the box Tokina AT-X 24 ~ 70mm F2.8 PRO FX

As indicated above, the versions of Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO and Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO II exist in two versions: '1: 2.8' and '1: 2.6-2.8' and are quite similar to each other. The easiest way to distinguish between 'PRO' and 'PRO II' is by the inscription 'TOKINA' near the front lens and the presence of fasteners for the bayonet hood:

Most likely, the optical design of this lens is a recycling of the design of the previous lens. There is reliable information that the creator of the scheme is the legendary Angenieux (Angenjo).

Assembly

The assembly is super high quality, without any comments. The mount is made of chrome-plated brass. The inner frame is made of duralumin. The rest of the parts are made of durable composite materials. This is exactly the lens that I do not want to let go.

True, I could not find reliable information on all-weather protection, and most likely the lens does not have any additional protection against bad weather conditions or dust / dirt.

The body coating is very similar to Nikon's old professional lenses (e.g. Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 MKII) The rubber bands of the focus ring and zoom are pleasant to the touch.

When the focal length is changed, the front lens moves in a wave-like manner, but does not extend beyond the hood mounting ring, and therefore does not increase the overall dimensions of the lens. The maximum depth of the lens is available at 50mm focal length and focusing at infinity. The front lens is moved as close as possible to the edge of the body frame at a 28 mm focal length and focusing on the MDF. We can say that the lens has internal focusing and internal zoom and does not change its dimensions. The rear lens moves during focal length changes.

Unlike the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO, the original Nikon / Canon lenses of class 24 (28) -70 / 2.8 have a movable front part of the body frame (trunk), which does not look as stylish as the internal zoom of the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO.

Tokina AT-X 280AF PRO

Tokina AT-X 280AF PRO

Focusing

The lens focuses quickly enough. In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates 90 degrees. During automatic focusing, the focus ring remains stationary, it is convenient to support the lens behind it, while the ring can rotate smoothly by hand without restrictions in any direction.

If there are reviews on the Internet about slow focusing, then we are talking about a lens option for the Canon system.

There is a special Tokyo-based AF / MF One-touch focus clutch switch (one-touch focus mode switch). The switch is quite convenient. To switch between focus modes, just pull the focus ring toward the bayonet mount or front lens.

A copy from the review on the camera Nikon D700 sometimes focuses behind the subject (back focus). But, in general, I did not observe any special problems with focusing.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Tokina AT-X 280AF PRO

Image quality

The lens is very weak at 80mm and f / 2.8, the so-called 'Tokin software' comes into play here. In the 35-80 mm range, software is also present. When you close the diaphragm, some of the software remains. From an aperture of f / 4, the lens becomes pleasantly sharp. With F / 5.6, I have practically no complaints about sharpness.

I would not use this lens as a lens for a wide range of tasks, but would only take it for some 'atmospheric' situations. At first, I even thought that the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO from the review was completely broken, so strong and unusual was the software, which resembled pictures with monocle. But, as it turned out, this is such a feature of similar Tokin lenses. As for the zoom lens, Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO can create a very nice picture, though unusual soft effect and a special Tokyo bokeh with luminous contours must be able to use.

In vignetting and distortion, the lens does not stand out in anything special - everything is within the normal range for this kind of optics. In the backlight and side light, the contrast drops sharply, you can catch a lot of glare and parasitic flares.

There is a lot of information on the network about Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO instances with very poor and very good image quality. Most likely the lens has a wide variation in quality, and also, perhaps, it was constantly being developed optically without official releases about new models.

For those looking for an inexpensive omnivorous station wagon for a wide range of tasks, I would recommend finding a successful instance Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09. Many times I met photographers who were unhappy with the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO and Tokina AT-X 270 AF PRO. Some argued that there was some kind of disease in the optics of these models, which over time manifests itself in the alignment of lenses and the deterioration of image quality. You can write your thoughts on this in the comments on this review.

Results

The Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO is a well-built lens. It does not shine with optical indicators, the picture suffers from strong software at open apertures. There is probably a wide variation in the quality of individual specimens.

Yesterday I almost became the owner of 28-80 / 2.8 with fungus or mold inside under the Canon mount.
    I have a weakness for Tokins: I have the AT-X Pro 28-70 / 2.8 and 28-80 / 2.8 both under Nikon and 28-70 / 2.6-2.8 under the Canon mount.
28-80 / 2.8 under Nikon mount are often found, under Canon mount - rarely and often either without a hood or in a suspicious state already in the pictures. Yesterday I saw a fresh ad on Avito, and on the pictures everything is without problems and the glass seems to be clean. I arrived in spite of Quarantine to the other end of the city. Good thing I took the LED headlamp. Eventually
there is a lot of dust under the filter, and dust seems behind the front light-collecting lens. I turn the lens over and look at the rear lens and even without a flashlight I see in the middle what I would not want to see. I comment on the situation. I take a flashlight and see through the lens right through. Either condensation, or small droplets behind the back of the lenses and clouding. The owner assumes out loud that these are type of bubbles in the lenses. There are no bubbles in my Tokins. I saw them in Soviet lenses. Bubbles in the glass itself is essentially a marriage. But in yesterday’s Tokin it was just mold or fungus. It’s a pity the lens, because apparently it was in good condition. He did not fight the owner.
Yesterday there was a wonderful sunset and I really wanted to just test Tokina on 1Ds_mk3, but alas.

It’s you, April 29.04, which tokina you watched, by chance not on Kolomenskaya?

      • Pokemon

Curiously, there are 2 announcements on Avito on Tokina AT-X Pro 28-80 / 2.8, which are sold on the Kolomenskaya metro with a Rodenstock MC HR Digital filter, with a serial number ending in 0799.
Two young ladies from different accounts, Alexandra and Tatiana, have been selling 1 lens for a month now with a difference of +/- 200 rubles for a price less than $ 200, which is not enough for a lens of this model.
Michael, and whose will you be?

        • Michael

Yes, in fact, I didn’t conspire to look at Kolomenskaya. But then two guys tried to push another one with bubbles)

Now this lens has surfaced in the north of Moscow near Babushkinskaya. I switched on the LED headlamp and again saw the familiar behind the rear lens - turbidity, dots, and like a mustache extending from them. In short, this Tokina will continue to walk around Moscow until it is disposed of. As I saw UV Rodenstock, I immediately suspected something was wrong.

How do you feel about Nikkor 35-70? In my opinion, it is very similar to Tokina in the picture, the same software on the long end. And yet - why do you need it on Canon, better put Nikon's via the adapter. I re-tested a bunch of old Nikon optics on 5DS and was surprised to find that some lenses are wonderful as good. For example, a zoom of 25-50 is better than Canon's 17-40, a width of 20 / 2.8 ais is generally a masterpiece. But, most of all, he shook the fifty-ruble 2.0, not yet Ai, but K - it allows the matrix to be 50mpixes, damn it !!! I didn’t expect it to be approximately equal to the more expensive watering can (the watering can is better in the back, they didn’t save money there, apparently). It turned out, in general, interesting, to test all this on Canon. As a result, now, when I want to get a “ringing” picture on Canon, I hang the ancient Nikkor on it.

    • Dmitry MSK

Here, look - this was recently shot by Nikkor 25-50, handheld, 1/200 f8, iso 400, Canon 5Ds

I bought myself exactly such a lens in Japan at a very tasty price, I could not resist. Only on my canon. I planned it for a mirrorless full-frame camera on a Canon mount, for every day. When I received it, I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance and design, a solid and pleasant thing! It looks like new, it was not used at all, apparently it did not go to the previous owner. First of all, I tested it for software and sharpness, since this is the main stumbling block. And you know, he's quite good! Yes, in direct comparison with the standard dark zoom Canon 18-55, it loses in sharpness at any aperture. On a cropped DSLR, I could not take a picture, as sharp and contrasting as on Canon 18-55, to some extent the software is always present, most likely I just did not get into the exact focus. But the tokina is very close to the staff and at the same time has a much more interesting pattern. If you do not photograph small black and white text, then you can not see the difference. The essence of Tokin's software is that white colors are layered with a veil on black, from which black loses its contrast. That's how I saw it. In general, I will try this lens as a staff. Attached a fragment of a photo, f4, 70mm, photographed from about 80cm. Bzk camera with dual pixel. The word of the rank is in the sharpness zone, the rest of the text is already out of the zone and the veil is visible. :) In general, as for me it is quite a suitable lens, you just need to learn how to use it. And on ff bzk you can unleash its full potential.

    • Alexey

all tokina optics have the “tokina glow” effect, some like it for portraits, some don't. but on the covered holes with sharpness everything is in order.

    • Igor

Overall plan. The original did not load here, it squeezed a little with the phone.

  • lorfen

I bought this Tokina a couple of months ago. I like. Taking pictures on Nikon D600

  • Pokemon

Tip: If you decide to buy such a lens without a hood with a thought, then “somehow” to buy it. Then “later” it will be difficult to find it even on ebee, if you are interested in the original hood for authenticity.
For Tokin 28-70, the situation is simpler, but similar.
Despite all the statements of the sellers, the blend is still needed.

    • Human

And for the very first version of the evolution of this lens from the review list, there is only a 72mm threaded hood, did I understand correctly?

    • Alexander

A hood from Canon fits my 28-70. Doesn't dress perfectly, you need to find the position, but he carries himself very confidently both in combat and in traveling modes

  • Dmitry Kostin

There was an opportunity to compare the restored Canon 28-70 / 2.8L and Tokinu 28-80 / 2.8 on Canon 1Ds_mk3.
Tokina is sharper at all focal points and has more contrast. More collected picture.
I got a copy of Tokina in good condition, which I chased for a long time.
Tokina 28-70 differs in less distortion on SHU, the picture is similar, but a little less sharp contrast - closer to Canon 28-70 / 2.8L.
As for my Canon, it had a disease of all Canon 28-70 / 2.8s, namely, lens flaking / splitting behind the aperture in the lens. This was expressed in a veil / clouding. Unlike Tokin fungus sufferers, it is not always easy to spot. It is necessary to look strictly from the side of the bayonet and illuminate with a flashlight at an angle from the other side. As soon as the group of lenses near the diaphragm lights up, the lens is repaired. I can say that the sharpness after changing the lenses, rebuilding the lens unit and then adjusting it almost did not change. Contrast, yes. The glow in the frame is gone too. Therefore, if someone will choose between this Tokina and Kenon 28-70, feel free to take Tokina if her glasses are clean. Canon is 3 times more expensive, and an inevitable repair awaits it, which not all masters undertake and not everyone can paste, disassemble, sort the lens unit and then assemble and adjust the lens. Someone can do one thing, someone else.
The restoration of Canon will start at a price of one or two Tokin. Well that is from 15-20 thousand rubles.
    Count for yourself.

Taking this opportunity, I want to thank Alexey (it seems it was him) for trying to somehow dissuade me from buying a Canon 28-70 / 2.8L, in general, I admit, I didn't have to risk it and take something else (for example Tokinu 24-70 / 2.8) or do not take anything, the money would be more whole.

excellent glass, I have been using it mostly for 2 years now, I shoot in RAW, Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO has its own character, so I cannot recommend it to everyone, there are native zooms, it will be easier with them, but who will make friends with him, then forever and ever!
