Impressions of the Pentax K-s2

According provided by Pentax K-s2 camera with lenses SMC Pentax-DA L 1: 4-5.6 18-50mm DC WR RE и  Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 (for Pentax), many thanks to Vasily Bondarenko.

Pentax K-s2

Pentax K-s2

Pentax K-s2 was announced on February 9, 2015. This is a very good entry-level amateur SLR camera. They provided me with a camera for a week, but I paid more attention to a review of the whale asset. SMC Pentax-DA L 1: 4-5.6 18-50mm DC WR RE than Pentax K-s2.

The technical details of the camera can be easily found on the official website. In this note, you can read only my impression of the Pentax K-s2.

I like amateur Pentax cameras, as they are almost always better than their direct competitors in the Nikon and Canon camps. So, Pentax K-s2 can be considered a direct competitor Nikon D5500 / Canon 750D... In contrast, Pentax did not skimp on making a weather-resistant case, added a good viewfinder with 100% coverage of the field of view based on pentaprism, overclocked the camera to 5.5 fps and added many other goodies.

I am sure that in the comments, experts on the Pentax system will not be too lazy to tell all 'anonymous' about what the Pentax K-s2 is 'cooler' than any other entry-level amateur DSLR.

In turn, I will try to answer in the comments all questions of interest to readers.

Pentax K-s2

Pentax K-s2

The matrix (the heart of the camera) Pentax K-s2, most likely, inherited from its predecessor Pentax K-s1, released on August 24, 2014. The matrix produced by Sony can create images with a maximum size of 5472 X 3648 pixels, which equals 19.961.856 which is rounded to 20 MP. This number is a kind of psychological threshold for those who choose a camera, focusing only on this parameter. 20 MP is less than 24 MP in the more advanced K3, K3 II models, which easily divides the cameras by model series.

All the time I was tormented by one question - why is this sensor not used by Sony and Nikon cameras? Maybe he is somehow unsuccessful?

The matrix, as for me, is good, and its overclocking to ISO 51.200 only confirms this. Nevertheless, the noise level is no different from other cameras of its time and level and, most likely, loses to competitors from the Nikon legion. The absence of an AA filter, as well as the “gadgets” for eliminating moiré, are not surprising and do not particularly affect the picture.

Pentax K-s2

Pentax K-s2

The overall impression of the camera remained positive. Everything works as expected, and in a huge menu with a million settings, you can easily get lost for a couple of hours. In general, the Pentax K-s2 was developed for potential buyers who have never encountered a Pentax camera before, but would like a functional and inexpensive camera. 'Inexpensive', of course, is debatable. Despite all the Pentax K-s2 chips, it will easily get lost among the variety of similar cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony. Why buy a Pentax when you can buy a similar Nikon / Canon for the same money?

Sample photos on the Pentax K-S2

All photos in the gallery are on-camera JPEG. All photos were taken using lenses. Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) A17 и SMC Pentax-DA L 1: 4-5.6 18-50mm DC WR RE. I was asked to shoot a Pentax K-S2 with a manual lens to show the beauty of the stabilizer, measuring exposure and focus confirmation with manual optics. But, strangely enough, for a very long time I have not had manual lenses. There was a myth that because of the reviews on Radozhiv I simply had to shoot with manuals, but this is not so.

I did not find anything special in color rendering. In low light white balance can easily lie, and the resulting color will be completely different from what it really is.

Source files can be downloaded. here.

More examples of photos using Pentax K-s2 can be found in the review SMC Pentax-DA L 1: 4-5.6 18-50mm DC WR RE.

Prices for modern Pentax cameras in popular stores can look at this link.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

I can easily recommend this camera to those who do not like the dominance of the same Nikon / Canon designs, and who want a camera different from others.

  • zengarden

A good alternative to the dominance of N / A DSLRs, small and protected, but not cheap, with their own and cockroaches.
I wouldn’t buy, but I would like to hold it in my hands and shoot it :)

  • Ilyas

Arkady, the main thing they forgot to mention is FRIENDSHIP WITH ALL LENSES OF THE MH42 MOUNT AND BAYONET K :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don't think that's the main thing. Is the fact that the camera is friends with native lenses really a virtue? Is it a virtue that Canon supports EF / EF-S mount lenses or Nikon F mount lenses? And Mx42 here does not belong to the camera, but to the system as a whole. The same Canon is quietly friends with the M42, and Nikon is friends with all sorts of Soviet lenses under the 'H'.

Here's what is really good for manual enthusiasts, it is picking, support for metering exposure, a built-in stabilizer and a focus trap / focus confirmation on the selected point. Unfortunately, neither Nikon nor Canon do the picking and focusing trap, although this is just a software implementation on a few lines of code.

      • Jury

Nikon give Lushnikov an opportunity to earn :)

        • Arkady Shapoval

In fact, those who use cameras with a class at least slightly above the base have the ability to measure exposure automatically. And confirmation about focusing is on all nikonas in the form of a green dot in the lower left corner. The same Canon without a chip does not give confirmation of focusing, and the exposure from camera to camera is measured randomly.
If we talk about the convenience of working with the manual, then Sony mirrorless ahead of the rest. The only thing they lose to Pentax is the focus trap.

          • Jury

focus trap is a very convenient function, Pentax fellows, went to meet lovers of manual optics, and Nikon believes that we have enough green point. Sony will also finish this function in their cameras when they find out that this can be done :)

      • zengarden

Is there a picking too? Well, cool :) but, probably, only in LiveView mode?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, only in Live View. But how could it be otherwise?

  • Andrei

Paying 15-17 thousand you can take Sonya 7 carcass -)

  • Denis

fold the screen, and underneath a bunch of inscriptions)))

    • zengarden

Also useful - you can stick a crib there. And for women - a thin mirror :)

      • Denis

but about the mirror idea, maybe even a brilliant

  • lesa

The camera, by the way, has 2 spinning disks, which is convenient and not available for analogues from other camps (:
Pentax has always been distinguished by the fact that it has not practically cut back to the marketers what can be squeezed out of the camera.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There are many of these "by the way". But you know, recently I was shooting some kind of wedding, a man with a Nikon D7100 approached me and asked what the front and rear control dials were for, what they were doing. Of course, there was a green zone on the photo. In the future, according to the film Idiocracies, there will be one single button on the camera.

      • Land

There is such an autoradio tape recorder Ural concert, released around 2005, but at that time, and still it stands apart in terms of functionality, and so on the topic, the chip in it is the only twist that controls absolutely all the functionality, and if you get used to it get used to using it, it turns out that it’s actually very, very convenient, it’s something unreal

    • anonym

The camera, by the way, has 2 spinning discs, which is convenient and not available from analogues from other camps. There are plenty.

      • Anonymous # 2

Nikon 3xxx and 5xxx series, for example, have one disc. Budget boots also seem to be. Where is it full?

        • Andrei

Zapap XXXX and XXX have one drive each, but the second one seems to be not wanted -)

    • Dmitriy

The Canon 760d has not only two disks, but also an LCD information display

  • Anatoly

Pentaxes are generally unimportant devices. Not surprisingly, the review also turned out

  • Ek

Figs with her with a penta, why is the tamron so lame?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tamron, in fact, for his money, is a very suitable option.

  • Ek

Two discs are of course convenient, but again, at 300 ke, I say I set mode A and change only the aperture, and for this I need only one disk., Exposure compensation +3, auto iso BB to taste, and in mode M, of course two wheels are convenient

    • anonym

But how do you adjust the exposure without a second wheel on three hundred?

      • Dmitriy

On three-digit canons, you need to press the exposure compensation button at the back and simultaneously turn the only front wheel

  • Ek

Well, yes it is, but if there weren’t a second disk, you would have to clamp two buttons instead of one

    • Arkady Shapoval

On Nikon cameras that have one control dial, you don't need to hold down two buttons. For shutter speed - front dial, for aperture + - button combination and front dial.

      • Vladimir

        You mean the back? :)))

        • Hob

          Ass... can't be touched)

  • anonym

what always surprised me and liked me was Arkady's language, very good Russian, you can learn from him, although he lives in Kiev, it's just some kind of joke.

    • Lynx

      )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

    • Yarkiya

Have you tried to read books? Only not marinins with groundwater, but Gogol with Dostoevsky and Pushkin. The quality of the language grows in proportion to the amount of reading.

      • anonym

        +100500

    • Evgeny_d60

I will surprise you - even in Lviv there are people with good Russian language. And there is nothing surprising in this. Arkady has a lot of Ukrainian style in his language, just not everyone notices

      • anonym

For example, the turnover is "better for ..."? Somehow I noticed)

  • anonym

Tell me the mount diameter of this pentax, otherwise IBIS seems to be there for show.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The diameter, like any other under the K. IBIS mount, is not for show.

  • ULADZIMIR

The weatherproofness of the camera is a definite plus. What about lenses for the Pentax system? Will I be able to shoot in the rain? Or will I be able to crawl on wet grass at dawn and photograph the dew on dandelions against the dawn background?

    • Yarkiya

Why crawl then, the screen is there, folding.

In general, of course, an orange stripe, glamorous, two discs, again ... but no, I wouldn't take it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Lenses marked WR seem to be enough. You can crawl a little along the wet grass.

  • Photo Booster!

I completely agree with the author. Quite a logical continuation of the "dominance" by "Pentax" itself.
The "machine" is exclusively for fans of the brand, who will not look at the cost and change their "initial" to the "initial" new. )))

    • Arkady Shapoval

KS-2 seems to be even a little higher than the very, most entry-level. At least pedivikors put it higher than Km, Kx, Kr, K-S1

      • Dmitriy

That is how it is. The same Kr in the sense of control is one big misunderstanding, there neither the focus point can be quickly changed, nor the exposure compensation can be quickly entered. Only the rear control disk ... And this device, it seems, is closer to -30 in class.

        • anonym

K-r. A normal device for its very modest money. As the first SLR is the juice. Moisture resistance is very lacking. Fast exposure compensation - hold the button near the green one and turn the wheel. Very comfortably. The same button + green - reset exposure compensation. The button is under the index, the wheel is under the large one, everything comes out on the fly.
A HUGE drawback is a dark video finder, after a film ME it is a door peephole. Change AF points info button.

          • Dmitriy

But you yourself see that everything is "crooked" by pressing a few buttons. The camera lacks efficiency. Another thing that K-r did not like very much is the flash, which, with manual glasses, beats in all the crap, overexposing everything in the world. And as for the modestness of the price, so at one time they went at the same price as the Canon 550d, I would not say that it is cheap. On the contrary, even.

            • Jury

And how do you think the flash with manuals should work? She knows neither the exposure nor the focusing distance. With modern manuals like samyang it works fine

  • Sergei

Once, when choosing the first camera, I considered it and Pentax liked it very much, but the K-5 series, the tactile sensations were well-developed, but the price and recommendations of the seller, about a small number of related products and the price in the secondary market, scared me away, but I took a look at the Pentax updates and honoring the fair. Moreover, K-1 35 mm came out, in general, prosperity and success to the owners of creative discoveries.

  • Pastor

Cool camera! I would like to try it live. The price, of course, is too big for now, but maybe later. In general, weather protection is a huge plus for me, more important than two wheels and a swivel screen. all the more, 5.5 frames per second is already quite good. It is quite possible to shoot a reportage. A small and light reportage camera is just what you need. You won't have to carry heavy Nikons and Canons in the rain.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The buffer without enhancements in the raf (PEF) pulls only 8-9 pictures.

      • Pastor

It will not be enough. And they say Pentax does not cut back on opportunities in the initial DSLRs :)

    • Lynx

small lightweight all-weather reportage camera is fuji Xt1 and X-pro2

      • Pastor

Also an option, but I suspect the focusing speed will be lower, although not really.

        • Lynx

We compared the other day with xt10 with the top 16-55 / 2,8 and d700. The owner of the d700 said that he did not notice much of the difference in focus.
By the way, if you put an old Fujikovsky 18/2, then the situation is completely different, so here it depends a lot on the lens

          • Pastor

M-yes, there is something to think about. Can sell everything to hell, but take Fujik with a pair of suitable glasses. If the difference is not noticeable with the d700, then the fuj will be clearly faster than the initial crop.

            • Lynx

It is definitely CONVENIENT to the initial crop.
In the case of speed, everything STRONGLY depends on the glass.
For example, 18/2 35 / 1,4 56 / 1,2 is not particularly hasty, and it is better not to turn on the focus tracking to avoid a nervous breakdown, and in the manual it is still faster. )))
But with 16-55 / 2,8 you go as if with microtree three hundred.
And here is my bag. It was quietly worn in it the other day: a carcass, an 18/2 16-55 / 2,8 flash, accumulators for puff and carcass, a handful of light filters, a sync cable, documents, a bottle of water, a first-aid kit and a printer.
Now here I am in the city, it just has a fuj ht10 with 18/2 and a soft neck strap, an amateur 166 with a belt. First aid kit and two hamburgers.

              • Pastor

Beauty. In order to fit something into canon or Nikon, you need a weighty backpack :)

              • a lion

                (offtopic) Kaukko handbag? Thing.

              • Lynx

A noun with an ebay for 1400 rubles and no worse than in operation.
Is that "from the back" there is no separate pocket for documents, and the mesh pocket is narrow (no more than 6,3 cm in diameter) - a bottle of 0,5 "holy spring" climbs, but "Kuwak" is no longer ((

            • Lynx

Well, yes .. we just went with the Nikonist. my bag "upright" in it fit 4-5 times.

              • Pastor

In fact, in my report, when time permits, the 40-liter backpack is clogged and another TV bag with a carcass separately hangs on my shoulder. It seems it’s not very annoying, but I’ll imagine that you can get about the same thing by carrying a small bag over your shoulder, already your teeth grit :)

            • Lynx

Nuu ... fudzhik's telephoto camera too .. nifiga is not small and not easy, although probably less than 70-210.
Googly Fujikovskie 100-400, 50-140 / 2,8 or cheaper and darker a couple of class 50-200

              • Pastor

Yes, I was already interested in their glasses. What is nice - there is no frank slag, judging by the reviews, everything, even the cheapest, is quite worthy.

            • Lynx

although there is an extremely lightweight plastic 50-230mm F4.5-6.7, it’s only a bit dark and rustic, but it’s quite sharp and not more expensive than the Nikon analogue

            • Lynx

Yes, this is both a plus and a minus at the same time.
On the one hand, it will always be good, without compromise.
On the other hand - without compromise, "cheaper, but I'll pat for the quality")))

      • zengarden

But one and a half to two times more expensive + native optics = still double the budget.

        • Lynx

Well, look at the Nikon prices: 17-55 / 2,8 d7200 (for pontokidatel d5500) and some sort of shirik class close to 18/2.
You can find the Nikon wearable printer. If you find
Say what's cheaper on a budget

  • Jury

Since users of younger models in the majority only use a whale lens, the presence and accessibility of additional accessories is up to the bulb. And so the Pentax park is quite worthy

    • Michael

Decent and expensive. The prices of lenses and their number on the secondary scare.

      • Jury

        Well, lima))

        • Michael

Yes, lima and stars))) and no one around

  • Alexander

Purely subjectively, I like the photo from my Olik more. I don't know about the budget segment, but the older Pentach models always collect the highest marks on all possible specialized foreign resources. It will be very interesting to read the review of the first FF camera K-1. According to first estimates, they are in the same league as the best Canon & Nikon.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The K-1 has only one problem, it is 4 years late compared to the Nikon D800. And for 8 years, compared to the Nikon D3x (we do not take reportage cameras, but cameras with a large number of MPs). And if you think that compared to the Canon 1DS, the delay occurred by 14 years.

Imagine how much experience Canon has gained, making full-format cameras for 14 years, how it has perfected the technical process. 14 years is an eternity. How many full frame lenses have been redesigned and refined. And what about Pentax?

And another sub-problem, 4.5 frames per second will not pull any more or less dynamic shooting at a serious level. This is very bad for the system as a whole.

      • Alexander

It seems to me that of the listed drawbacks, only one is serious - a limited fleet of autofocus optics, but given the experience and fame of Pentax in this area, they are able to significantly improve this drawback of the system over time.
4,5 frames per second is not much slower than Canon 5 / 6D Nikon 750/800 ... the difference in rate of fire is minimal and not critical, IMHO. In terms of characteristics, it even surpasses the Nikon 810 in many ways, having a price almost 2 times lower!
But Pentax has a different trump card, experience with the medium format (as I understand it, lenses will be compatible), only they have Hasselblad, neither Canon nor Nikon has it, and if it is transferred to the FF, the difference in experience is not so essential.

      • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

With its vast experience Canon full-matrix in dry lost in the picture to my unpretentious Pentax K200 (at the wedding in 2012) And all the main full-matrix Canon cameras are still far behind Pentax both in DD and in color depth. It is ahead of Canon only in terms of its clientele, there are actually many more photographers working on this device. But not all are so inert, there is a tendency that the most creative and inquisitive move to Nikon so far.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Showcase your work on the Pentax K200D?
It is built on a 10 MP CCD sensor, the same as in Nikon D80, D60, D40x, D3000, on which I shot soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wrong, and I can’t dare say that they / he is better than modern full-frame Canon. Not even modern, but starting from 200dsm1, 2dm5.

and its acceleration to ISO 51.200
    _________________________
    matrix is overclocked, what?

    • KalekseyG

ADC. such a thing accelerates it matrix is not sickly. if the ADC itself is not frail

      • Grandfather

As if it were not sickly :) to disperse the lens aperture, for example, from f / 1,4 to f / 1,2 without changing the ratio of the diameter of the lens to the focal length.
No one overclocks the matrix, which is constructively embedded in it, the main thing is the diameter and number of light receiving cells, then we have the output, after reading the information, percent. counts everything and turns it into a file, the rest is uncontrolled noise in an ultrahigh marketing ISO

        • KalekseyG

)))))))))) re-read why you need an ADC in fotik, then we will argue

          • Grandfather

            what are you, young man
An analog-to-digital converter converts the analog signal coming from the photodiodes to digital, that is, 1 and 0, that would be percent. could read and process them,
how are you going to overclock these digital codes in the ADC to increase the sensitivity of the matrix.

            • KalekseyG

X light fell on the matrix, a Y volt signal was generated. In what place does Y increase if ISO is set to 51.200 if Y still arrives from the matrix. Before analog volts are converted to digital bits, they must be stupidly increased in accordance with ISO, or encoded in the ADC itself as amended upward.

              • Denis

you can just multiply the measured value by 2, and as if the ISO has increased 2 times

              • KalekseyG

the fact of the matter is that it’s not a matrix that multiplies all this

            • KalekseyG

And yes, I almost forgot, fotics with the same matrices and different ISOs:
              NIKON D5300 and D5500 - 12.800 and 25600 respectively
              NIKON D70 and D40 - 1600 and 3200 respectively
              ?

        • Andrei

ADC can not increase the ISO matrix, it can only affect the number of colors / shades.
The higher the degree of the ADC, the more accurately the signal from the matrix is converted. With an ADC of low power, some signal levels will simply be erased.

          • KalekseyG

Does your camera also have an ISO 25600 matrix?

  • Vladimir

All is well with the Pentax until the moment of problems. Service.net

  • Alexey

The problem with the system lenses: they are expensive and do not match the counterparts from Nikon / Canon for price / quality. As the owner of the Pentax K30 I declare this.

  • KalekseyG

Does your camera also have an ISO 25600 matrix?

  • Sergei

But what impresses me is that the camera has all-weather protection.

  • Kobakokh

Dear Arkady! Sony used the same matrix in its cameras - A3000, A5000, A58. If you look closely at the test shots from the K-S2 and Nikon D500 on dpreview, you will find that up to ISO1600 there is no difference between them, the similarity is parasitic, in color, in noise, in resolution. See for yourself please. Personally, I think that the same matrix but with a new processor is used in Nikon D500 and D7500. No wonder dxomark set Nikon D500 as the maximum noiseless ISO 1324, that is, below the D5500 !!! And it is right. Above this, Nikon suppresses noise at the level of a special co-processor, a kind of amplifier of certain properties of the matrix as a light recorder. Pentax quickly realized that it was necessary to go the same way, there could be no other way for a half matrix, and released their K-70 and KP, which beat even full-frames on noise, KP surpasses even the D500, and the cheap K-70 does not lag behind it at all at higher resolution But if you look closely, this 20 megapixel matrix gives a real resolution more than those 24 megapixel matrices, I don't know how this is achieved, but the fact is obvious. Show anyone the same photos from the K-S2 and my other Pentax K-3 camera, everyone answers that with the K-S2 the picture is sharper and even more pleasant, with the same lens and aperture. And this is correct, but up to ISO1600 values, with a stretch - up to ISO3200. In addition, one should take into account the fact that K-S2 does not provide 14-bit files and files weigh almost 50% of files from K-3. When drawing out very deep shadows, K3 wins out, but in real life this is not very relevant. And in China now the new K-S2 costs about 460 USD and this is a very good price for such an advanced camera.

Matrices with d500 / d7500 and Pentax K-S2 are different, it looks elementary at a resolution of 5568 x 3712 and 5472 × 3648. And the matrix with Pentax K-S1, which appeared in 2014, migrated to Pentax K-S2 is too old to be even programmatically overclock up to 1.5 million ISO (as does the d500).

In a simple assumption, you expressed the comparison of images from these cameras to ISO 1600 and see for yourself how amazingly similar they are. And what is there to disperse, they did not disperse anything, they simply began to process the received data programmatically. The only thing is the processor, the real noise and even the dynamic range of those cameras are almost identical. A slight difference in pixels, this is a matter of windows in the camera, a fraction of a millimeter is all. Do not believe? Well, now I will give you a mathematical proof of what I said:
    5472 / 5568 = 0,9827586206896552
    3648 / 3712 = 0,9827586206896552
Do you understand why this happens? Because the matrix there is exactly the same, I was once again convinced of this just after your message about the number of pixels in supposedly different matrices. See for yourself - the size of the resulting image from them is exactly proporional to each other. Such a coincidence is impossible without the fact that there were identical matrices, and the output pixels were obtained simply from slightly different window sizes in the cameras themselves. But this matrix is remarkable - the real spillage from them is higher than from 24 MP matrices. Please tell me how it came about that Dxomark gave Nikon D500 lower noise scores than Nikon D5500? They are cunning too - there are still no tests specifically with the K-S2 and Sony A58. By the way, K-S1, K-S2, Sony A3000 and Sony A5000 have almost exactly the same noise scores there. Yes, they are lower than those of the same D500, so I assumed that the latter has a slightly modified matrix from K-S1 (or just a processor-modified one - it is not so difficult to bring the matrix noise threshold from 1078 to 1321), the pixels there are almost the same , again, the point is in different vents covering the matrix, but the difference is literally 20-30 pixels.

Actually no, there are different matrices. Official sources indicate the actual number of subpixels on the sensor, and they differ significantly 21.51 vs 20.42.
The sizes will be proportional from Nikon D1 to 2.5 megapixels (2000 × 1312), because the aspect ratio of the sensor is 2 to 3 on all cameras :)
      5472 / 2000 = 2,7
      3648 / 1312 = 2,7
The Dxomark score is not a silent threshold, but a threshold at which the noise / signal ratio is equalized. The question is that when K-s2 at a high ISO (take, for example, 25.600) is hellish, then at d500 it will be quite adequate for itself.
Of course, I want to amuse myself with the fact that the Pentax K-s2 is no worse than the d500 for a lot of money, but the realities are different.

no, I don’t want this, I just compared them up to ISO1600, with interference up to ISO3200, I took files from dpreview and imaging-resources, and it seems that there is almost no difference, both in detail, and in noise, and in colors. I did this expecting that in real life most of us always try not to go beyond ISO1600, and within these limits this camera behaves quite decently for a very reasonable price. By the way, after updating the firmware, you can use the new rude telezoom from Pentax - 55-300 with a PLM motor with it, as a result, we will get a completely waterproof and puffy very small kit that gives a decent image quality.

Yes, now any camera behaves with dignity up to 1600
