Honest Nikon 50 / 1.4G video review

You can watch the video review here (on my new YouTube channel) or in the window above. Many thanks to Vladimir Morgunov for helping create the video review.

The text version of the review Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4G SWM has long been here.

This time Volodya shot using a three-axis electronic stabilizer, a Sony a7s camera (ILCE-7S), a Samyang 35mm T1.5 VDSLR AS UMC lens (with a Nikon F - Sony E adapter) and a Sennheiser EW 122P G3 radio system with additional tricky goodies: ).

  • Zloy

    And I liked the review))

  • Eugene

Thanks for the review, of course, there were not enough examples of shooting on this lens in the video itself. Well, with the video you could still work, the walk too long came out.

    • Vladimir

in fact, this audiovisual work aims to convey the idea in a competent way to the viewer, while showing Arkady in the best light, but not making him the hero of the blockbuster

  • Serg

    Arkady! Sumptuously!!!

  • Denis

Kai and Lok, too, the conclusion is always unexpected)

  • TOAD

Good, but too many repetitions of the same thoughts ... if you work properly with editing, the timing will decrease by at least a third :)

    • Alexander

I don’t like it, try not to be clever, but to do it yourself… And then to be clever… A good overview, Arkady….

      • TOAD

I expressed my opinion, which may help Arkady to improve his reviews in the future ... What did you want to improve by commenting on me? )))

        • Arkady Shapoval

CRAPAUD, everything’s okay :) we’ll do better) given that this is an impromptu without preparation, we can be a little forgiven for repeating, and it really got pained that there is no prof. fifty dollars from Nikon :)

  • Olegjan

Thanks for the good review. Your helper as a robocop helmet is missing.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Volodya, rather, a member of the team, or videographer, than just an assistant. My assistant is completely different, and, by the way, I need to make an article about him.

  • Nicholas

Thank you Arkady for your work and for the review of this lens. I use Nikon 50mm / 1.8G Very satisfied. I want to try 35mm / 1.8G

  • Dmitry K

it turns out you keep fifty fifty 1.4 only for filming in churches and other dark places? otherwise 1.8 would take?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Mostly yes.

  • Sergei

    Review liked, good review.

I wonder how this will help Arkady.

    • anonym

      oh, shaw you havary?

  • Mick

Arkady, I want to wish you more video reviews. You know the material very well and I like it. It’s only a pity that you are a Nikon preference.

    • anonym

Go to Nikon and there will be no regrets !!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I will have to switch to Canon.

      • Ivan

Are you serious or kidding? What 50 mm are you planning to buy for Kenon. I have Sigma 50 1.4 many misses in focus. I tried Kenon 50 1.4 also misses, maybe a little less, but there is. Even at apertures of 1.8, 2. There are no similar problems with other lenses.

      • Peter Sh.

And what reasons do you have for this? Literally in a nutshell, if possible, please.
I am also thinking about the same ...

        • Arkady Shapoval

In general - a more thoughtful system and there is a divine 135 2.0.

          • Ivan

From 135 everything is clear as God's day. I bought it and use it. But with 50 mm, I don't understand. Kenon 50 1.8 of the second version is flimsy. My friend dropped it or didn't hit it hard and it fell apart, plus the optical characteristics are not up to par. The new version of STM is also not a fountain. A friend took pictures, works as a photojournalist, many mistakes. Native kenon 50 1.4 in conjunction with 5d mark 2 a lot of misses. They send me for processing a series of 20-25 selected frames and 5-6 out-of-focus frames. At the same time, the diaphragms are by no means extreme 1.8, 2, 2.2. Sigma 50 1.4 I have. In conjunction with kenon 5d mark 2 and kenon 6d, there are frequent misses. The diaphragms are the same. About the new Sigma 50 1.4 Art complains about Kai and Locke, they don't like their bokeh. I understand that it is not correct to say that, I did not take pictures with this lens myself, but I met advertisements for the purchase or exchange of the Sigma 50 1.4 lens and why people are adding “not an ART version”. And his price is not the most pleasant, about 900 dollars. I don’t want to buy a lens for $ 900 to get slurred bokeh. Although I understand that bokeh is a subjective thing. In general, I personally tried and photographed for weeks or years three lenses, Kenon 50 1.8 of the second version, Kenon 50 1.4, Sigma 50 1.4, and with all of them one disease, the quality of focusing. In this case, the diaphragm is about 2.
Do you personally Arkady what 50mm lens do you plan to buy?

            • Arkady Shapoval

              Canon 50 1.2

              • Ivan

thanks for the answer. If it's not a secret, what camera are you planning to take? Wait 5d mark 4 or something existing today?

              • Arkady Shapoval

planned, as usual, something TOP. But in reality, due to a bunch of factors, I continue to shoot at 50 1.4zh

              • Gringo

Arkady, why did you then sell markless 5d? Wouldn't it be better to make him a second camera by purchasing 50 1.2 to him? Why are these endless Nikons? And the question to Vladimir: why Samyang?

              • Arkady Shapoval

5d had to be sold, because at the next cleaning of the sensor in the off-center they scratched the UV filter.

Time 13.50 Canon 50 1.0 costs 40 thousand dollars. Perhaps I misheard, but the price of ebay is 3500-4000 dollars. Please comment.

    • anonym

      slip of the pen.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I scolded toe. I was not preparing for the review, so I remembered that 1.0 is either 4000 or 40000 :)

  • Basil

Arkady, the review is a bomb. If I am not mistaken, Volodya used to shoot at d800 in conjunction with samyang 85 1.4. Why suddenly sony ilse with 35 mm samyang? Are you drawn to lomography? Although, of course, his device for shooting is a bomb. I thought like a goof that he installed the camera on the cart. It turned out great. Arkady, tell Volodya, if he is not in the scrap, of course, a request to write an article, a recommendation on the choice of a fotik for shooting a video, otherwise I really don't know what to take: d610, d7100, d800 or still rush to mirrorless, for example, Ilsa 7 or what good fuji x-m1? I would like to hear the recommendations of a professional videographer. Thanks again for this wonderful review!

    • Vladimir

Vasily, I think we will do such a review in the near future. and my choice is due to the fact that the SONY A7s currently among its value category gives the best combination of picture detail, DD latitude, no noise at high ISO, high-quality sound and general ease of use. the choice of optics is due to work with an electronic stabilizer - it is quite difficult to use 85mm with it, I would have to stand at a distance of about 15-20 meters from Arkady in the common fund) but in general, you can work if you remove some short pieces, for example, here https://vimeo.com/158421130 almost the entire movie was shot at 85mm, with the exception of the passage of the car, there is like 35mm. on frames with 85mm small jerks are visible, this stub was not the best tuned, although in general it is difficult to work with 85mm

  • N0rin

Very, very good review! thank you!

  • varezhkin

I propose to call this half "the most offensive Nikon lens" :).

    • varezhkin

liked the new level of reviews! Yes, there were some obsessive repetitions, but in general they do not spoil the overall impression. thanks! It would be nice to insert frames from this lens into the video sequence.

  • wj

A good review, highlighted and technical points and features of the practical application of the lens. Yes, next time it would be a little better to work on the installation, as other commentators have already written, but even in the present form the material is good. Go on! :)

  • Dim

The video was shot well, the operator holds a good angle, the blur is interesting, as a result, a very lively picture with the effect of presence. The equipment looks mystrically as a result for a reason: =) But Arkady, oddly enough, spoils everything - well, as if you add obtrusive advertising to a good novel as a refrain. A kind of preacher, there really is not enough chorus swinging and howling in the right places. ; 0) You are set free, Jesus loves you ... 1.2, 1.0, 1.2, 1.0 ... Aliluya, Aliluya. Gee. I wanted to write something according to the “content”, but as I watched the video, where one is silent and does the deed that speaks for itself, and the second tries to sniff in a universal flashlight-iron-a means of communication with space, the desire disappeared by itself - having eyes yes he will see for himself, my son come with his fifty-fifty in peace forever and ever and let nothing be erased from him and all the discrediting inscriptions will be in their proper places :-)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, I am only for doing everything better. The question is in time, desire and so on. Here was the intention to tell about fifty dollars - they did it. Indeed, for a long time in the frame, talking on a topic is not so easy. I remember doing a DF video with some guys, so their text was all spelled out on pieces of paper - but this is not serious :(.

      • Dim

A photo. The trick is that I really do something, like many here. And my main work is also criticized ;-) like the rest - I think so. And this does not piss me off, and moreover, I am grateful for criticism, as a rule, since it allows me to do my job well. On the issue of its constructiveness, there may of course be different opinions. In this case (with fifty dollars), I do not see anything strange in the current situation. Firstly, the products are distributed by marketing departments to their price niches, so as to get the greatest profit for the company, and this is understandable in the end, profitability is the goal of any commercial enterprise. Secondly, there are technical aspects, well, for example, iron lenses suffer more from temperature changes, I heard that one comrade's iron crushed the lenses in the cold, the lens itself becomes much heavier and apparently the same autofocus is harder to cope with, again increased power consumption, and everyone is already accustomed to the fact that Nikon has a battery for a long time, for sure with 1.2 autofocus will be focused on open even longer than 1.4 ... But you never know what else, I myself love their old iron lenses, well, the transition to plastic was clearly suffered at one time, as well as the transfer of a part of production to China.

        • Dim

As a rule, they do not criticize in the army, prison and similar "organizations", if someone has a desire to get there as soon as possible, then it is easy to arrange for yourself, and not sit on the forums for photography. Criticism can be taken in different ways. As they say, for one a problem and a reason to complain about God, for another an opportunity to show oneself, develop, etc.

          • Denis

            Hallelujah

          • Dim

Yes, and at the expense of protection from adverse weather conditions. The trick is that Nikon has long had a separate line of underwater cameras. The first of which was developed by none other than Cousteau. And it’s just that their waterproof DSLRs with interchangeable lenses are forbidden to be exported from Japan, they are also used by the US Army with the Kodak filling. It is not Nikon's fault that they cannot sell these products for the afflicted, but a political decision. Apparently, they did not begin to produce semi-finished products with a ready-made good solution. You can learn about all this lego from the Internet if you wish. Moreover, on the e-bay parts of the old film underwater DSLRs with interchangeable lenses can now even be bought.

            • Dim

              Nikon Nikkor 50 1: 1.8D + D200

        • Alexander Malyaev

Autofocus is always aimed at the open, there is no difference in focusing even at f / 1.4, you shoot at least at f / 16, if the lens is f / 1.4.

          • BB

Yes, but this lens, unfortunately, has focus-shifting, and is quite noticeable on multi-pixel cameras.

          • Arkady Shapoval

There is a Live View, different cameras have different tips for them. Some include Live View and focus on the F value that is set.

            • BB

Well, yes, only we get an ultra slow lens with contrast AF from a slow lens with phase AF

            • anonym

It would be interesting to know which cameras in LV support the always open F.

  • Peter Sh.

I record voiceovers a couple of times a week, read the text. I know firsthand what a hard job it is - video recording and sound arrangement.

I recommend all advisers to try it for themselves, and please us with some sparkling review, with the voice and pronunciation of the TV announcer.

Otherwise, all your advice is not worth a damn.

  • KalekseyG

Cool review. Knowledge of the topic and the ability to quickly pronounce the name of two lenses in a row pleases. A fat minus for not taking with them two lads with bats to disperse the people - one man just pulled up to appear in the frame, to count him!

    • Arkady Shapoval

The editing is just the way it is, due to the fact that the people in the center of Kiev are just wild, uneducated, stupid, drunk, scary and constantly crawling into the frame, swearing, screaming. This is sad.

      • Pastor

Yes, the contrast is especially noticeable with Kai Wong's video. He walks the streets there, takes pictures of everyone in a row, and the people do not react at all, as if no one is around. For several hundred videos, in my opinion, several times someone became interested in what he was doing, and even if they were some kind of tourists, and once the fisherman waved his hand so that he would not be filmed (although they actually filmed almost headlong and a few frames) ... Moreover, he walks through all sorts of bazaars, along the walking streets, all kinds of places where people gather. And everyone reacts more than adequately, they do not even cast sidelong glances at either the operator or the presenter. And here I go alone taking pictures of nature in places not very crowded and still people turn around, and several times they even asked all sorts of questions. Well, what can you do - the mentality is different :)

        • Denis

apparently, a high population density in China, people are tired of everywhere))

What good can wedding people do?
Nothing, take a picture of different nonsense and grind the snowstorm!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Only the wedding man will understand the wedding man.

      • KalekseyG

Subtly ;-) I did not immediately sense sarcasm

  • anonym

I don’t understand the indignation about production in China, but not in Japan. What is the difference where the automated workshop is located ???? About 20 years ago, when all production was twisted by hands, it mattered. Probably the hands of a Japanese virgin, collecting Japanese lenses before the first rays of the sun, gave a special magic, But now any manufacturer will try to reduce production costs. And there is absolutely no difference where the assembly robot will stand. At any production there is a department for product quality control. This department is responsible for the quality of products that are marketed.

Believe me, most of the electronics, even the top-end ones, are assembled in China with the highest quality. It would be much worse if they wrote on the lens “made in Ukraine or in Russia or in Belarus” here it would be scary for the quality.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The fact of the matter is that prof. Nikon optics are assembled in Japan (99% of lenses), this is a symbol of a really good lens. And here the best fifty dollars is in China. Indeed, no one can tell the difference between an assembly in China or Japan. And this is confirmed when the production of lenses moved from Japan to China (the same 50 1.4D of the last lots).

    • anonym

Amused 2 statements of Anonymous.1- “And there is absolutely no difference where the robot will stand for assembly”. And 2- “Made in Ukraine or in Russia or in Belarus” here it would be scary for the quality. ”

  • anonym

Good review, Arkady. And you have a good operator :) Keep up the good work)

  • Sanka

For several months I tried to choose between 1.4 and 1.8 and thanks to such a wonderful review the issue was resolved. Looked at the DNS prices today: 1.4 - 24000, 1.8 - 14000. Review of the lens, tips and the whole process of shooting - super !!! Well done and thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  • Anton

It is strange that you do not consider this lens to be professional.
    Nikon disagrees with you http://www.nikon.ua/uk_UA/pro/nps_main.page?
50mm 1.4 g is NPS professional equipment list

    • Arkady Shapoval

And they have a different list for different countries, and the lists are forks by water, for example AF-S DX Fish-Eye Nikkor 10.5mm f / 2.8G IF, AF S? Really? Where's the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f / 2.8E VR? But although I agree, maybe they’ve already turned it on, maybe it’s not right, but there is no gold ring on it :)
