In short

Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror - super cheap, super light super telephoto manual focus lens... A feature of the lens is its mirror-lens optical design, which does not allow changing the aperture and forms a characteristic 'donut' bokeh. Image quality is very poor.... To exaggerate, the lens is for 'try to shoot the birds, the moon, and then throw it away or sell it.'

First of all, Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror is intended for shooting distant objects and photo hunting for birds and animals. In the viewfinder, it zooms very close to the subject.

Assembly

Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror assembled well, but somehow rude, without any grace. Lenses with such a rough design were made 30 years ago, and for a modern lens, this is rather strange. The lens body consists of an alloy of metals, the focus ring is very wide, rubberized. Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror is made in Korea (no, not in North).

Included with the lens are several filters: Normal (IA Skylight), ND 2x, ND4x. Optionally, you can buy original color filters Y52 (Yellow), O56 (Orange) and R60 (red). These filters are mounted on the bayonet side, near the rear lens. This method of installing light filters is characteristic of many telephoto lenses. Also, you can use ordinary filters, which are screwed into the thread near the front lens and have a diameter of 72 mm. For review, I used a rear neutral / normal filter SKY-LIGHT 1A M30.5 KM-500 and front protective filter Extra digital 72mm.

I could not find information anywhere, whether it is necessary to install any filter in the thread under the rear filters. That is, it is not clear whether the filter is included in the optical circuit of the lens, for example, how this happens with the lens Nikon 300 / 4 AF. I can assume that Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror is still better to use without any filters.

Focusing

Focusing is smooth, without jerks or slippages, with a pleasant 'oil' movement of the focusing ring. The focusing ring rotates approximately 200 degrees, due to the fact that the lens has a large diameter, it is quite convenient to focus on focus, but very difficult. During focusing, the front part of the lens barrel, together with the thread for light filters, rotates, and the barrel of the lens barrel (lens trunk) moves forward. Unfortunately, the lens does not have a hard stop for fast focusing - the focus ring has a large 'infinity flight', which is due to the temperature limitations of the housing.

The minimum focusing distance is only 1.72 meters, which allows you to shoot at a maximum magnification of 1: 2.7, which is very, very good for such a lens. The Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror has a focusing distance scale in meters and feet, as well as a scale indicating the magnification for 'Macro'.

Some resources and users mistakenly add the prefix 'IF' (example), indicating the presence of internal focusing. There is no such attachment either on the lens body or on its box, and adding it is a hoax. It is also possible that Samyang means something else under this abbreviation. God only knows what these Koreans have in mind.

The instructions for most Nikon cameras indicate the maximum relative aperture of the lens, with which the 'electronic rangefinder' function will be available, which helps manual focusing. The electronic rangefinder indicates in which direction to turn the focusing ring for fast and accurate focusing, and also gives confirmation of accurate focusing with green point in the lower left corner JVI... When the dot lights up and stays on, the focusing is correct. Most Nikon cameras are only designed to work with lenses no darker than f / 5.6... For example, electronic rangefinder cameras Nikon D700 и Nikon D3200, with the help of which test shots were taken, cannot correctly tell me about the exact focusing on sharpness.

The list of Nikon cameras whose focus sensors allow the electronic rangefinder to work correctly with optics with F / 8 can be found here. More information on focusing and metering. exposure with manual lenses and Nikon cameras you will find here.

Diaphragm

Lens unable to control aperture. Shooting always occurs at F / 8. Because of this, certain features and difficulties are obtained:

  • exposure control is complicated. You have to control the exposure without changing the aperture using ISO manipulations, shutter speed, filters and the power of additional lighting;
  • The depth of field is controlled only by the focusing distance; it cannot be forcedly increased or decreased by means of aperture;
  • it is impossible to forcibly (by closing the aperture) improve the image quality, especially with regard to sharpness and contrast. The lens always 'shoots the same';
  • It’s very difficult to focus in low light, even the Live View mode helps a little.

Most likely real aperture this lens is much lower than F / 8. It feels like the T-stop (a measure of the actual aperture ratio) is equivalent to T 10 - T 13.

Image quality

With image quality, everything is very bad. Very low sharpness. Very low contrast, the multi-illumination used does not help the lens. there is chromatic aberration, which, in principle, this type of lens should be completely deprived of, but apparently, when it was created, something went wrong.

In such a situation, I must definitely add a spoiler: 'maybe I had an unsuccessful copy on the review, found at the nearest trash can.'

My experience

As my grandmother used to say: 'buy, paint, throw away'.

If the lens gave an image quality comparable to at least the Soviet MS 3M-5CA F8 500mm, then you could seriously think about buying it. At just 320 grams, small size and low cost at a 500mm focal length, this is a very tempting proposition.

With super long telephoto lenses, the golden rule doesn't work. For handheld shooting it is advisable to use excerpts shorter than 1/1600 second.

Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror

Dimensions of two lenses. And Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror is 2 times longer in focal length and much shorter in physical dimensions before SIGMA 18-200mm 1: 3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM MACRO | C (Contemporary)

Results

The Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror is a very lightweight, compact and cheap manual telephoto mirror-lens type lens. Well built, easy to install on most modern cameras. Unfortunately, its image quality is very low. I do not recommend it. Think 100 times before buying this lens..

why browse if it’s junk ??

    • Dmitriy

That others would not make mistakes.

  • Vadim

Thanks for the review! I was thinking of buying samyang only either 500 / 6.3 or 800/8. These are other glasses, but most likely they are similar in quality. After buying a 14mm 2.8 IF AS UMS ED ll, I thought that the Samyangs are all good, only without af. It turns out this is not so.

    • lesa

It’s better to do something heavy and old manual, than such turbidity in the literal sense)))
I’m thinking of contacting the Zeiss 300 / f4 and take the native x2 converter.
Well, or similarly, you can choose among the old Nikkor / Kenon. More expensive a little of course, but the picture is high-quality.

    • A.N. Onim

500/8 still gives a decent picture, but 800/8 is a real trash! Suitable only for spy photos

    • Andrei

all mirror lens HS. if there is no money for a normal TV set, it’s better to take 70-300 for the same penny and sprinkle

    • Kirill Yankovsky

500 / 6.3 or 800/8 of a REALLY different quality - I liked them, there is something to compare with.

And this junk 500 f8 has a clear violation of those. process. Terrible "spherical", so there is no sharpness. The optician who took it apart said - that Maksutov would have turned over in his coffin, having seen how a spherical mirror was sprayed there!

      • nukemall

There, both the primary and secondary mirrors are sprayed on the reverse side like everyday ones, therefore the chromatics climbs. The "Spherical" is creepy, in particular, due to the fact that there is no centering or thermal compensation in this uzhosnahe at all, the secondary mirror dangles in the seat with a gap of almost a millimeter. In general, the product for the “store on the couch” is like other Samngov products of the 70s-80s of the last century (there was a rather large family of them - fixes, zooms, and even autofocus lenses, on the same site such junk if it comes to the review turns out to be marked with the mark “perhaps an unsuccessful copy was caught”).

  • KalekseyG

Look at MTO and ZM, the truth is very heavy.

  • Anonymous 1

And MTO (ZM) -500 was quite good. Even now, good results can be achieved; skill is only needed, but a tripod is desirable. But even with hands, if not "jittery", it will turn out sharply and plastically.

  • Denis

    thanks for the shame review

    • Denis

wittyly written. The picture with the pigeons amused. due to the large focal length, it seems that half of them have already collided in the air

In short, this is some kind of wrong samyang!
    this is more correct http://samyang.ru/obektivy/nikon/samyang_reflex_300mm_f_6_3_ed_umc_cs_nikon_f/

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is a different lens, not the same as in the review.

      • Lynx

        Yes

  • Artem

Yeah. MTO is better on the head, although a heavy dog.

  • Lef

By the way, slightly offtopic, but on Ali you can still find "Ketaysky Uzhos". Moreover, oddly enough, a lot of enthusiastic reviews.

  • StudioRAK

I tried to tame this (500mm) in 2011 :) unsuccessfully :) I returned it to the store a day later in order to save my nerves :) when I tried a lot of Samyangs, I realized that their widths are quite working :) and 50 or more mm the picture quality falls directly- proportionally to the number of millimeters :)

    Need to take)))

  • scif

Pain, terrible pain in the eyes, when looking ...

    • Basil

And for me an interesting lens. Painting with soap - as Mashkov would say.

      • scif

I was so tormented by a rangefinder like FED-3 to shoot with an open aperture (but FED is a FED. And just throw this samyang away - about nothing

  • Vodichkin

But what about the quality of Extra digital filters?

  • Rodion

Nobody did EVIL better than Maksutov)

  • anonym

Alexander knows a lot about quality things.

  • Oleg

Arkady, thanks for the review. A negative result is also a result. And this review will tell many people - is it worth it? :)

  • Murzik

And where are the nuts?)) He does not twist the nuts, as MTO?)

    • Max

Nuts can only be twisted in it itself) In general, for hammering nails a great thing, if there was no hammer at hand

  • Murzik

Ahhh, that's it, got it) 0 petals

  • Andrei

Once I wanted to buy myself one, but I was confused by the clumsy look and low price. Apparently not in vain. Then he took EVIL to try it, but it was already a different level - the Tokina 300mm f / 6,3. I quite liked it, although there was no contrast in the photo (it is solved in editors, as opposed to sharpness). Sharpness is also not razor-sharp, of course, but bearable. It was difficult to get into focus, especially without a viewfinder (I was shooting at m4 / 3 then).
    This is after adding contrast:

    • nukemall

In order for the EVIL to have some kind of contrast, you need a lens hood at least the size of the lens itself, and if it is larger, then even better.

  • Alexander Malyaev

Tell me, is the lens suitable for the Polo 3000? I want to assemble a good kit. :)

    • anonym

Well, clever guys started to mock ... ... Come on, buy and take off.

    • Jury

Suitable for Polo 3000, it is desirable to take it together with "MP RSFSR GLAVUCHTEHPROM Plant No. 6 77mm".

        I support! (> ^ ω ^ <)

      • Denis

without a set with filter Holga does not count!

        • Denis

          * light filters

    • Andrei

I didn't understand the humor. This lens (and not just that in the review) has a right to exist - it is very well assembled, gives a fairly adequate picture and has dimensions like a sapop whale 18-55, that is, with some Panasonic GM1 it can easily fit into a jacket pocket (checked ). Among budget TV sets, there is little that is good at all, and even more so with such sizes.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Really? Samyang 500/8 gives an adequate picture and even fits in a jacket pocket? Pictures in the studio, especially the jacket pockets.

        • KalekseyG

On a hike, a friend confused him with this - http://www.deep-life.ru/spr-300/index.htm In general, the manufacturer made something up with the number of lenses, why are there so many of them?

        • Andrei

Well, in the first comment I wrote about which lens I’m talking about, re-read carefully.
Tokina 300mm f / 6,3 for MFT. And the links to the photo are in the same comment, much better than the soapy disgrace in your review.

  • Vladimir Pochtarev

Thank you Arkaziy for a thorough and non-biased test!
A couple of times I already had the idea of such a lens, I was bribed by its price, dimensions and weight, but after I got a domestic old ZM-6A for adaptation for Nikon, I refused such a purchase. It should be noted that the ZM-6A gives a much more pleasant picture than those presented with the Samyang 500mm f / 8.0 Mirror, but even in comparison with the Tamron 70-300mm, the ZM-6A was inferior in all respects. And besides, the shallow depth of field and the terrible boke pattern put the final point in my decision not to purchase such lenses. Although there are fans of the ZM-6A ... :-)

    • Pastor

I agree that even tamron 70-300 macro loses in sharpness and contrast. But regarding boke zm I want to note that as the only telephoto lens it is not very good, but how “one of” it is quite interesting precisely due to its bagels :) Otherwise, such blurring is not possible with anything other than mirror lenses (well, except how to cut the aperture and not the fact that it will work out or suffer in the editor).

      • Vladimir Pochtarev

Sometimes such a boke pattern can really be used as an artistic technique, but there are not many such cases of using this lens, and for this I would not buy it ... :-)
And in all other cases, drawing objects in the zone of non-sharpness causes an ambiguous impression ... rather negative ... everything is doubled ... brrrrr ...

        • Pastor

Aha, a nightmare of an epileptic :) Especially when there is some kind of grass or a multi-colored fence. But it is very cool to see these bagels on the glare of the water :) And it is also interesting to see female portraits, where sharpness is not particularly needed. And if you put a woman in front of the water - generally a fairy tale :))) Well, of course, a fairy tale taking into account the price, and not in general. So yes, the same tamron has much more applications in photography than this samyang or zm.

  • varezhkin

something I thought better about samyang ... or is it an old line like this ...

  • Amateur photographer_

The brightness of the image is lower than criticism. Nema sharpness. Oh, the active is shameless.
Suttєvo gіrshiy for the Radiance of the Mirror-lens about, Activi 500/8.

  • Vova

I don’t understand what you were pleased with the Soviet MS. There is MTO 1000. The quality of the photo is as if you are shooting through a layer of polyethylene. I think this is the destiny of ALL ALL mirror lenses.
I took this one with a 3x teleconverter just for shooting remote objects. He removes poorly even without a converter. Although if you look through the viewfinder, everything is clear. They will not really focus on the star at night. Everything is fine in the viewfinder, but in the photo there is either a ring or a circle. But not the point. You can try to remove the pin so that it can focus even closer for macro. Although such a quality ... .. They say the Nikon 500/8 mirror lens is good. And Minolta AF 500/8 with autofocus.
But for myself, I took nikon p900 for shooting birds of the moon, and so on.

    • Pastor

An excellent solution for me. Taking absolutely lousy mirror glasses just for the sake of magnification is a thankless task. For the price of such a samyang, now you can take a used Nikon P510 and there, in addition to the higher magnification, there will be autofocus and stub, and the picture will be at least no worse.

    • Kirill Yankovsky

I agree 100% - soviet ZL schemes - complete slag! These Samyangs are still calculated by computers, so the quality standard and accuracy are higher.

  • Max

The quality of the picture is just tryndets ((
