YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

In short

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is very simple - a cheap copy of the original lens Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II... In this case, 'cheap' does not mean 'bad'. It just so happens that YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is the cheapest autofocus modern 50mm lens for SLR cameras. Also, YONGNUO LENS EF 1mm 1.8: XNUMX is cheapest fix with auto focus among all modern lenses. Apparently, the YONGNUO company decided to implement a plan according to which every photographer should have a fifty-fifty lens.

Originally released for Canon EOS cameras only - YONGNUO Ø52mm LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8... After a while, a version for Nikon cameras appeared - YONGNUO Ø58mm YN50mm F1.8 (N).

It's important: YONGNUO lenses for Nikon and Canon have a completely different body design. YONGNUO Ø52mm LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 (for Canon cameras) copy design Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II, YONGNUO Ø58mm YN50mm F1.8N (for Nikon cameras) copy design Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 - performs all its basic functions - it focuses itself, controls the diaphragm and does not crumble in the hands, you should not expect more from a fifty-kopeck piece.

The creative and practical potential of such a fifty dollars is difficult to overestimate. It is suitable for a wide range of photo tasks. Photo enthusiasts often use it as a portrait lens. Many just want a fast light fix, in addition to its whale lens. So, diaphragm F / 1.8 more than three feet wider aperture F / 5.6, which is used in 'dark' kit lenses at the long end. In numerical terms, this means that YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is approximately 10 times brighterthan, for example, whale Canon EF-S 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 IS STMwhich uses a maximum relative aperture of only 50: 1 over a 5.6 mm focal length. The calculation of the difference in the relative aperture (count the aperture) is performed elementarily: 5.6 * 5.6: 1.8: 1.8 = 9.679, which is rounded to the value '10'.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 not only externally copies Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 IILenses also use very similar optical designs. Of course, an optical circuit such as a Gaussian double lens is very common, but still the drawings of the schemes are as if drawn under a carbon copy.

Optical design YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 compared to Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II.

Incidentally, Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor also made according to the double Gaussian lens scheme, and its optical scheme is also very much like optical schemes Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II and YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

Assembly

For my review, YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 came almost new, in a boxed set. What the sample from this review did not have was a protective film on the front and rear lenses that originally came with the lens. A small box contains a warranty card, instructions in Chinese and English, and the lens itself with front and back covers. The box is made in the colors typical of Nikon Nikkor golden boxes.

Please note that YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is not supplied with a hood, and there is no mention of the possibility of using a hood in the instructions for the lens. Most likely, it will be possible to use any lens hood with the lens, which is installed in the thread of the front filter. Front lens deeply recessed in the mandrel of the body, which serves as a kind of built-in hood and helps the lens to work properly in side and back light.

To the touch, the lens is made of cheap plasticwhich made the lens very light. Unfortunately, the mount of the mount is also plastic. YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 weighs just 120 grams... As a result, it is one of the lightest autofocus lenses in the world. It is even possible that this lightest autofocus lens for full-length SLR cameras.

The diameter of the front filter has a very popular size and is 52 mm.

But not everything is so bad, the focus ring is rubberized. Even the original Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II could not afford such luxury. Nevertheless, before YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 I had an old man on the review Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-S Auto 1: 2 f = 5cm, which is made about a million times better than the modern 'Chinese'.

Unfortunately, the YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 does not have useful focus distance marks, depth of field scales, or tags for working in the infrared spectrum. There is only one single red dot for connecting the lens to the camera.

Important: There are 3 subversions of this lens (possibly more) with different spellings of the name near the front lens:

  1. 'YN50mm F1.8 YONGNUO Ø52mm'
  2. 'YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 YONGNUO Ø52mm'
  3. 'YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 YONGNUO INC. Ø52mm '

Important: I shot more than 20.000 frames (twenty thousand frames) without any problems on this lens and I had no problems with its functioning. But, repair masters claim that they are often accessed with breakdowns of this lens and it is quite difficult to repair them.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

Focusing

The lens uses focus micro motor and is an analog of Canon MM (Micro Motor). Auto Focus will work with any Canon EOS SLR camera.

Auto focus quite noisy. Noise level can be heard in my video review YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8. Focusing speed is average (closer to high), significantly lower than the original lens Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II.

I worked with the lens on the camera Canon EOS 5DSRwhich uses very advanced focusing system. FROM Canon EOS 5DSR I had no problems at all with accuracy, tenacity and focusing speed. Also, Canon EOS 5DSR focused without problems using YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 in Live View mode.

The lens has an AF \ MF focus mode switch. Be sure to switch it to the MF position during manual focus. If this is not done, then the auto focus mechanism may be damaged. In AF mode, the focus ring is not locked, but continues to rotate due to the power of the micro motor, while it cannot be touched.

In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates approximately 45 degrees. The focus ring travel is small. Given the fact that the focus ring itself is very narrow, then focusing manually is hard enough. Good though rubber focus ring.

Lens does not have internal focus, during focusing, the frame of the body ('trunk') moves forward about half a centimeter, while the front lens does not rotate. It is possible to use various filters without any problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 45 cm, while you can get the maximum magnification for macro photography of 1: 6.7, typical of many fifty dollars.

The lens has a small 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing).

Compatibility with converters is unknown. Most likely, there should not be any problems. Anyone who has experience working with this lens in conjunction with teleconverters, please unsubscribe in the comments.

Important: YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 - a lens from a third-party manufacturer. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Canon cameras. Known Issues:

  • on a Canon EOS DIGITAL camera 450D (aka Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi, aka Canon EOS Kiss X2 - one of the first cameras with Live View mode) this lens does not focus correctly, or focuses for a very, very long time, or does not focus accurately in Live View mode. Also, this lens is often mistaken in focusing in normal focusing mode using linear phase focus sensors (visual video).
  • the lens sometimes continues to focus (drives the lenses all the way, i.e. to MDF or to infinity) after the focus activation button has been released (usually half-pressing the shutter release button). This happens if the lens is not focused accurately enough (the lens, as it were, continues to focus when the focus button has already been released). This effect is seen with cameras Canon 40D.30D 450D. Not everyone will notice this feature and it does not particularly interfere with comfortable work with the lens.
  • when YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is installed on the camera Canon 40D, sometimes the latter may not respond to the power lever.
  • perhaps with other cameras there may be other unpleasant features.
YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 with supplied covers

Diaphragm

The good news is, YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 uses a diaphragm with 7 rounded blades. The formed hole is much rounder than that of the 5 blade Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II. With such a diaphragm you can get 14 ray stars from bright light sources.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8, like all other Canon EOS lenses, uses automatic iris control via the camera’s electronics.

The aperture closes to F / 22, which is typical for 50 / 1.8 class lenses. Class 50 / 1.4 (50 / 1.2) lenses typically close the aperture to F / 16.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

Image quality

I used a lens on a multi-megapixel camera Canon EOS 5DSRon which the lens did not perform as badly as expected. Of course, you can’t talk about sharpness at F / 1.8, especially at the edges and corners of the image, nevertheless, at F / 1.8 the lens is not so bad and has not gone very far Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II. If you cover the aperture to F / 2.8, then the difference in the center of the frame between Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II and YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 will be very difficult to find. Unfortunately, image angles only bounce back to F / 8.

At F / 1.8, the lens suffers a little from spherical and chromatic aberrations, and coma and astigmatism spoil the image around the edges of the image. The level of chromatic aberration is low, you can even say that chromatic aberration fixed better than many other fifty-fifty lenses.

At F / 1.8, a very strong vignetting is noticeable, which disappears closer to F / 4.

What I liked was the low level of distortion and pleasant color reproduction. In addition, the YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 behaves well in backlight and sidelight, it was very difficult for me to catch the 'serious' flare from the sun. Most likely the lens has really good enlightenment.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 has a bokeh pattern similar to Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II, in some situations the 'bokeh' of YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is quite decent, but in general the 'drawing' and 'bokeh' of the lens does not stand out in any way and wants to be the best.

Important: I used several copies of YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8, all of them were completely new, but the image quality was slightly different, which indicates a spread in quality during production.

My experience

Note that the YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is the expected lens. In general, it is strange that more serious manufacturers such as Tokina, Tamron and Sigma did not come up with a cheap fifty-dollar class 50 / 1.8. Fifty is a very common fix, probably even the most common. To make such a lens for only $ 50. - this is a brilliant move, especially since the lens itself turned out to be not so terrible.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is an excellent solution for those owners of Canon cameras who have heard a lot about the magical properties of fast “fifty dollars” and want to try them in action.

But when buying YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 you need to be prepared that in our countries there are no service centers that would undertake the repair of such equipment for free - no. And in general it is not clear how YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 behaves in repair, how often it breaks. With family Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II everything is much simpler - it is serviced and repaired without any problems.

If to summarize all my experience with the lens, then my conclusion is as follows: the lens has excellent price / quality ratiobut original Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II still better, and also more reliable.

A list of all Canon autofocus fifty dollars is found in the 'Confrontation systems Nikon / Canon. Part 3. Autofocus fifty dollars'.

Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II and YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8

Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II and YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8. Photos and comparisons of two lenses provided by the reader Serhii Todoriuk

Differences between YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 and Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II

It's no secret that YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 was almost completely copied с Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II. But there are slight differences between the lenses:

  1. YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 has been available since 2014 and is a newer lens. Canon 50 / 1.8 II available since 1990 and is an older lens. Lens Canon 50 / 1.8 II they’re no longer releasing and it’s getting harder to buy it new.
  2. All YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 lenses are manufactured in China. First lenses Canon 50 / 1.8 II produced in Japan and have the inscription 'Canon Lens Made in Japan'. Production over time Canon 50 / 1.8 II was transferred to Malaysia and most of these lenses are labeled 'Canon INC. Made in malaysia'. Some users have noted a slightly better build at YONGNUO 50 / 1.8.
  3. YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 weighs 10 grams less than Canon 50 / 1.8 II.
  4. YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 uses an aperture device with 7 rounded lobes, while Canon 50 / 1.8 II uses only 5 straight petals, which negatively affects the circles of confusion.
  5. YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 costs about 2 times cheaper than Canon 50 / 1.8 II.
  6. Modern Canon cameras can automatically correct some lens distortion Canon 50 / 1.8 II. With YONGNUO 50 / 1.8, some image enhancement functions will not be available, since this lens is not in the memory of modern cameras.
  7. Lenses have different internals (different control boards, etc.).
  8. Focus ring u Canon 50 / 1.8 II - plastic, and YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 - rubberized. A trifle, but nice.
  9. Lens travel time from infinity to MDF and vice versa Canon 50 / 1.8 II about half that of the YONGNUO 50 / 1.8.
  10. In optical performance, lenses go shoulder to shoulder.
  11. YONGNUO 50 / 1.8 has a lot more features and problems with some specific cameras (for example, focus problems in Live View on a Canon camera 450Dproblems turning on on the camera Canon 40D etc.)

In general, according to some technical characteristics, the YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 even outperforms the original Canon 50 / 1.8 II.

YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 - the cheapest and lightest Canon SLR fix lens (see the price here). In general, it is a copy of the original Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II. Optically YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is not bad, in some aspects even better than the original Canon 50 / 1.8 II... Despite all the skepticism about the 'Chinese clones' YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 is quite usable for its intended purpose.

UPDATED: an overview of the updated version appeared - Yongnuo Lens 50mm 1: 1.8 II and a review of the newer and faster version  YONGNUO 50mm F /1.4.

Material prepared Arkady Shapoval.

A version of this lens for Nikon cameras is already on sale. Price - $ 100 for Ali.

  • Andrey Vyunenko

Now the Chinese comrades from Yongnuo have launched the production of autofocus fifty dollars for Nikon. Does anyone have experience with this lens? There is practically no information from real users on the network.

  • Yura

Guys. Who knows, or maybe someone used the Yongnuo 35 f2 Nikon for FF. What about the quality of the picture, assembly?

Since the Canon 60D is very slow, I had to sell it because it is not suitable for sequential shooting in conjunction with the Canon 60D. For six months he suffered no longer had patience. I do not recommend it!

    • dragon yes not snape

And tell me, if it’s no secret, why put all sorts of rubbish on 60d. After all, there are 17 -55 2.8?

A couple of years ago, I was looking for a cheap half-dollar for the first dime. I went through about 5 yongs - all do not work correctly with the first penny. The focus blurs as hell, some shots have no visible focus point at all, i.e. the picture is as if some kind of glass in the lens dangles freely and gives distortion. In terms of sharpness, it is not a fountain at all, on the open it completely drains the Canon fifty kopeck 1.8 II ... As a result, I took almost zero Canon half-to-one, modified it, thereby solving the problem with autofocus misses and I do not regret a bit that I did not buy yonga. Specifically, for the first dime, yeong has no advantages even over the Bu canon poltos. I admit that autofocus will perform better on a newer camera, but when there is something to compare with in this price segment, you want to take it away ...

    • Alexander

Tell me what you remade in fifty dollars.

  • Dmitriy

In addition to the Japanese and Malaysian 50 / 1,8 II were still Taiwanese. I have one now.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Take a picture, send here, thanks.

      • Dmitriy

The inscription is worn out, but there is no box, alas ...

        • Arkady Shapoval

There the inscription should be on the side of the mount, who erased it :)

          • Dmitriy

Oops ... Identified. Confused by the inscriptions on the front and back covers, and the inscription on the bayonet side is really not readable, so most likely Malaysia. I apologize for misleading.

It is impossible to find fault with this glass at all - it's a fantastic plastic for those who try themselves in photography. As you can see from the review, this does not prevent the pros from working with it and getting great pictures. And if you consider how inexpensive this glass is on the same AliExpress - it's a sin not to try it.
IMHO, for a beginner, it would be better to purchase this lens than some helios. For many, manual focus is unacceptable, but they want cheap ~ 50/2. For them, the lens is just a godsend.

  • Artem

Comment on the assembly: I snapped a couple of thousand frames from it, dropped it a little (not much: I rolled off the chair onto a thick carpet with its weight) and the lens unit fell forward. I had to disassemble ... The lens block is attached to the helicoid with three guides, two of them have broken in half (plastic is fragile like glass !!! I got the impression that it was specially developed, any cheapest plastic is more elastic and stronger). Nothing, super glue glued, it works. I did not make out the Keno fifty-kopeck piece, but the materials in the whale are much more reliable.

  • Ф

You original canon and this copy did not make out? Maybe it is possible to change the 5-blade aperture block to 7-blade with a copy ???

    • Artem

It’s not worth it. A lot of dirt gets into the lenses.

  • Alex

I bought a Cenon 50 / 1.8 II for a very cheap ($ 25), the owner sold it because of the strong noise during autofocusing ... I did not find anything terrible, I stuck it in the 50d and everything is fine on my amateur eye, the question is: is it really noisy or in my Is there a glitch in it?

    • Oleg

Yes, he is really noisy. The design is flimsy, the optical qualities are good, if they do not play hockey, then it will trample

    • Oleg

By the way with a good purchase. I, too, sometime because of the jumps in the ruble and the dollar managed to get 40mm kenon and this fifty dollars for about $ 200. So I have it as a bonus to forty

  • Davids

Is it worth taking Jupiter 37a if you already have this?

    • Michael

It's up to you - lenses are completely different

    • Oleg

The answer can be divided into two parts: is it worth taking a 50mm lens in addition to a 135mm lens or so - yes, because the difference in shooting is very large, but whether to take the U-37 or another is already a budget issue and somewhat personal taste.

  • Dmitriy

Ali is already on sale and is on off. website an updated version of fifty dollars for Canon with a metal mount! Also on the site a new macro lens and shirik appeared. Maybe 35 for Canon will be updated soon?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Everything can be.

      • Dmitry K.

I did not wait for a 35 mm update for Canon, I ordered the super newest Yong YN50 / 1.4 :)
I will write about my impressions later ... I have something to compare, I used Nikon's 50 / 1.4G, which only with aperture 2.2 became more or less on the D750.

        • Artem

And what about the impressions? A month has passed ...
I also think to take it, but the cheto strongly creeping trunk scares me ... I'm afraid it will fall out ...

  • anonym

I do not recommend this lens for purchase. I got greedy and bought it myself on aliexpress. After a thousand shots, the diaphragm began to "stick" (it does not open after the shot). Either they refuse to repair it, or the cost of repair exceeds the cost of a new one. That's for sure, "kroilovo leads to the popalov")))

The advisability of installing such a lens on a crop camera.

  • Radmir

I bought the same lens as from this review in the store. I put a camera on it and took a couple of test shots, all the rules, put a bag in the photo. I went home. Upon arrival, taking out the camera with the lens from the bag, it turned out that the front lens cap pressed into its front. And it was not possible to remove it with a hand without a knife. During operation, the lens lost contact with the camera and fell off most often at aperture of 2.0, and almost always in 90% of cases. Then the lens generally stuck in focus and I fixed it by unscrewing the three screws. And everything returned to normal. It’s just that the parts are poorly fitted to each other and the stiffness of the plastic is not enough, apparently, this is the reason for such incidents. Before this, nothing like this had happened to me, but there was no yongnuo lens on my hands either :-) If you just touch the front lens block after it has focused, it will lose focus. And there was a noticeable backlash in the front. I continue to shoot him now, let's see what will happen to him next ;-) The experiment continues)

    • T.B.

I even felt sorry for your time to continue such an experiment: (After all, it's a shame when a rare scene was encountered, and the technique failed. Thank you, now we will not look in that direction.

  • Vadym

    in the formula "5.6 * 5.6: 1.8: 1.8 = 9.679" error

    • Arkady Shapoval

      where?

  • Radmir

Exactly 2 years, the Yongnuo 50mm F 1.8 worked and the plastic limiters that are related to focusing broke and they seemed to experience excessive stress when focusing in extreme positions, or the plastic is not very). Stupidly fell off, and the mechanics and the plastic lens itself are in order. The tests ended with such a result) The lens left only positive emotions.

  • Arkady Shapoval

It just so happens that I have used almost all Yongnuo lenses. Added YouTube videos for all Yongnuo lenses (generations, lineups, etc.) https://youtu.be/AfQ76sAwIac

  • anonym

So, is it better at 450d not to buy one if there are problems with autofocus? And questions about the build quality. Then I'll watch the manuals with the adapter.
