In short

Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 and Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.4 are Canon's latest manual focus fifty-kopecks before the switch to Canon EF mount. Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 has a simplified and lightweight body, only 5 aperture blades, light weight and small size. Optically, as for the old lens, it is quite good.

Please note that the lens came to my review in a converted form - its rear part of the body frame was removed for use on Nikon cameras with a Nikon F mount. I used it on the camera Sony A7II using Nikon F to Sony FE adapter. The result was an installation of a Canon lens refined for Nikon and mounted on a Sony mirrorless camera.

Assembly

Due to the fact that the lens came to me after surgery, I do not have a complete picture of its assembly quality. But I want to note that the aperture ring, like most of the lens barrel, is plastic, and the focusing ring is not rubberized, but still has plastic 'bumps'. Overall, the part of the lens that I reviewed has a 'simple' body. It just so happened, Canon over time simplified and lightened the bodies of the Canon 50 / 1.8 line of lenses, adding more and more plastic.

Focusing

The focus ring rotates a little less than 180 degrees. During focusing, the front of the body rim extends, while the front lens does not rotate. During focusing, the entire lens block moves. The focus ring moves smoothly. I focused without any problems using the Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 on cameras Sony A7II и Nikon D3200.

Diaphragm

Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 the first fifty dollars, which, unfortunately, began to use only 5 aperture blades. Petals form pronounced nuts in the blur zone. Subsequently, this restriction was transferred to the Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 (I) and Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II. On original Canon cameras with an FD mount, the lens had automatic iris control.

Image quality

It is believed that Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 is the only lens in the Canon NEW FD line that uses Canon SC (Spectra Coating) coating, unlike other lenses that use Canon SSC (Super Spectra Coating) coating. It is likely that there is no real difference in the clarity between Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 and other FDn lenses, and the SC specification for Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 may be a marketing ploy that sets other lenses apart from the 'unpretentious standard 50mm lens'. Be that as it may, Canon Lens FD 1mm 1.8: XNUMX is very afraid of backlighting. It also loses contrast in side light. In my a small video on the quality of bokeh Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8filmed on Sony A7II, you can see the level of glare while working against the sun.

The optical design of the lens is reminiscent of a conventional Planar. A lot of lenses from the last century are a modernized double Gaussian lens (Planar is also its version). The optical properties of these lenses are very similar. Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 does not stand out in anything special - it is quite sharp at F / 1.8 with a nice unpretentious pattern and strong vignetting at F / 1.8. At closed apertures, the lens is very sharp, with a low level of chromatic aberration.

In general, optically Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 is similar to many unpretentious, but productive fifty dollars of the last century.

How to use FL/FD/FDn mount lenses

To use a Canon FL, Canon FD, or Canon FDn mount lens on modern mirrorless cameras, you should use the appropriate adapter:

The adapters are suitable for FL, FD and FDn mount lenses, these mounts are backwards compatible. But using lenses with a Canon FL / Canon FD / Canon FDn mount on SLR cameras is difficult due to the long working distance. In such cases, a corrective lens adapter must be used, which will degrade the image quality.

Results

The Canon Lens FD 50mm 1: 1.8 is the last of Canon's 50 / 1.8 manual 50mm lens with the old FD mount. Unfortunately, old FD mount lenses cannot be used on Canon EOS SLR cameras without a special lens correction adapter (the lens will degrade image quality). But these lenses are very easy to use on any interchangeable lens mirrorless camera. Canon Lens FD 1mm 1.8: 5 has a simple plastic body and only 1.8 aperture blades. Optically, the lens is not perfect - it is very afraid of flare and has strong vignetting at F / 24. But still, on a modern XNUMX MP full-format camera, it keeps up with dignity.

it would be necessary to smoke canon's telephoto portraits ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is one in the review - https://radojuva.com.ua/2015/06/canon-fd-135-mm-3-5/

      • Lynx

135 still a bit long on the crop. ((
But I managed to get the kaleinar-5N, for just a thousand rubles!

        • Yuriy

          Just some kind of communism

          • Lynx

funny thing - on the Internet flea markets, in our city, they sell industrial 50-2 for 700 rubles, geliks for 1,5-2,5 thousand, Jupiters37 from 3-3,5.
And then you go into an ordinary antiquarian, and there the calenar, along with Kiev, for a thousand, all these geliks and industars 26 and 50-2 - 300-400 rubles on the shelves gathering dust.

            • Jury

The prices on the internet, in Ukraine, are even less, but the antique shop is cool, everyone would like this :) True, there are interesting offers on the internet too (both literally and figuratively) - I saw the old Nikon's manual fifty dollars being sold, from the recent Arcadia review, $ 200 off asking.

            • Denis

And in what city are such antiquaries?

  • Sergei

The drawing is similar to the modern fifty fifty mark two. Thanks for the review Arkady

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it looks like their optical designs are similar.

  • Vova

Hello to everyone, and especially to our esteemed admins! Tell me, if you attach a Canon FD lens to a canon ef / efs system without a corrective lens, it will not focus at all? Or will it be like a macro lens? And if it’s macro, then will there be a difference between buying a macro lens, and such a masks

    • Arkady Shapoval

Focusing will be, but its influence on the result will be many times weaker than in normal mode. The lens will work like a macro lens. This fifty dollars is not designed to work in macro mode, otherwise it would have a lower MDF (at least 40 cm), therefore the macro quality would be worse than in a highly specialized lens.

      • Felix

I will challenge it;) Actually, the mdf is 60cm from saving on the amount of material and the length of the thread of the helicoid, the optics themselves are more designed to work in the near field than in the far field, closer to mdf much better with aberrations and sharpness than already 5-6 meters.

  • anonym

You know, the “quality mark” looks much nicer than nuts and circular saws, so there is something in 5 petals!

    • Rodion

By the way, I agree, I also like pentahedrons more than nuts and saws. When I shoot Industar-69, I even like these quality marks)

  • Igor

Arkady will take a decent photo on a bucket with a hole. This should be considered if you are planning to buy a camera or lens from a review)))

  • Anna

There is exactly such a lens. And there is a film Canon with which it was bundled. At one time this kit served well ... Today I decided to put this fifty kopeck piece through an adapter without a lens on the Canon-400D. As expected, it only works as a macro lens. But a problem arose that I did not expect: the aperture does not close, the lens works only on an open hole. Accordingly, the depth of field is very small (I attach a picture). Can you do something about it? I mean, get the diaphragm to work? By the way, I have the same story with the Mayer domiplane: it works only when it is open, the diaphragm does not close. There are no such problems with Helios-44M (just switch it from the machine gun to manual mode). Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

    • Alexander

Perhaps, when installing the lens on the adapter, you will need a more thorough pairing (orientation) of the leash on the adapter and the lever (jump).

    • Gilles

Il ya un ergo plus grabd que l'autre et il faut le bouger pour que le diafragme se mette à la bonne position OU démonter et enlever le ressort de rappel de cet ergot

  • Giorgi

Jarohi obiektiv. Fotohope mozna vitinut iho 40%. Economic news.

Perhaps, when installing the lens on the adapter, you will need a more thorough pairing (orientation) of the leash on the adapter and the lever (jump).

Canon Lens FD easily convert to Canon EOS with a simple or chip adapter
with preservation of infinity. I can help with that.
    Sincerely, Alexander Fedorovich.

    • anonym

How much will the cost of reworking on eos be?

      • Alexander

Depends on the adapter with or without chip and material aluminum, brass. from 1t.r-1.5t.r. average.

        • Denis

Good day! An interesting alteration from fd to eos.
          How to contact you?

  • Vladimir

Hello. Soon there will be a Samsung nx1000. I want to take something from the old canons. I don’t understand, but the Canon FD and Canon FDn mounts, how do they differ from each other? Is the adapter for them the same or different?

    • Ivan

As far as I understand, this concerns more attachment of the object to the carcass of the old FD shny canons. In short, the old cameras had a ring - inserted - turned. FDn, according to the principle usual for all manufacturers - I inserted it by the label and turned it with the object on the carcass. In short, I put both these and those on the mikra through the transition. No difference.

      • Ivan

Misprint - read the object on the carcass as the object on the carcass. Don't worry, buy the transition and go to the Sony Panas look and to hell with where else. On ordinary ff and crops without a lathe in any way)))
