Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N / AI-S

The Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N / AI-S (abbreviated as Voigtlander 90 / 3.5) is a remarkable modern premium manual prime lens. The Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 belongs to the Voigtlander SL II line of lenses, although the lens itself only bears the 'SL' lettering. The information that this is indeed a 'SL II' can be taken from the box in which the lens was supplied.

This review shows the Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 version of N / AI-S (i.e. Nikon AI-S), while the lens has microprocessor contacts, which allows you to use it with automatic metering exposure on any Nikon cameras. Thus, in terms of Nikon, the lens is an AI-P analogue (also called 'AE'). In this case, automatic iris control is available through the camera menu, and the camera itself can work in any mode, for example, in classic P, A, S, M, or in full automatic mode (in the green zone).

Important: for the ability to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the value F / 22. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are marked on it, it is impossible to set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can be set only through the camera menu. It's strange that there is no intermediate value on the ring between F / 3.5 and F / 5.6. No ring retainer aperturelike Nikon’s native lenses, so you can accidentally slide the ring aperture from position F / 22 and receive the message 'fEE' on the camera’s display (ring installation error aperture).

Please note that Voigtlander 90/3.5 version N/AI-S does not transmit focus distance values into the camera, which may give errors in exposure, especially when shooting with flash in TTL auto modes.

This Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SLII is an upgrade to an older version of SL.

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N / AI-S

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N / AI-S

Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 is very well assembled, almost all parts are made of metal. The focus ring is rubberized, but the aperture ring is not. It is a very nice and solid lens to the touch. Despite its size, it weighs almost 400 grams.

The focus ring rotates 270 degrees, focusing is very smooth and pleasant. During focusing, the front lens travels forward but does not rotate. The minimum focusing distance is only 50 cm, and the magnification ratio is 1: 3.5. The lens uses classic 52 mm filters.

The Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 comes with a composite metal hood and the 'Voigtlander Close-up Lens for 90mm F3.5 SL' macro attachment for shooting small objects. The metal hood simultaneously serves as a 52-> 39 mm step-down ring. The protective cover goes under 39 mm and is installed in one of the sections of such a hood. No vignetting is observed when using this hood.

I didn’t like that there is no regular 52 mm cover in the kit with the lens, and this composite hood only makes the lens look strange, and even such a tiny front cover is easy to lose.

The macro nozzle is screwed into one of the parts of the composite hood. Regardless of whether the 'Voigtlander Close-up Lens for 90mm F3.5 SL' is screwed into the first short part or into the second long part of the composite hood, the maximum magnification ratio is approximately 1: 1.7. Unfortunately Cosina did not bother to make it possible to shoot in 1 to 1 proportions, and therefore it is not clear why it was necessary to come up with this macro attachment, because even without it the lens can easily shoot small objects.

When using the Voigtlander Close-up Lens for 90mm F3.5 SL, only macro mode is possible. You can focus on using the focus ring.

Despite the fact that the lens is equipped with CPU contacts, it cannot be used to adjust the sound confirmation of focus and, of course, an analog focus traps, which allows you to take a picture only with accurate focusing. Such a trifle could be very easily solved using another microprocessor programming technique.

Confirmation of focus on all Nikon CZK is a green dot in the lower left corner JVI. How to focus on manual lenses is described here.

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N / AI-S

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N / AI-S

The lens is sharp already at f / 3.5, on covered apertures, starting at f / 4 it becomes very sharp. Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 has good control over chromatic and spherical aberrations, as a true APOchromat should behave. Only on very strongly contrasting details can violet glows form in the blur zone. The absence of aberrations is very useful for shooting landscapes. Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 is devoid of distortion (or its level is already very small), and also has weak vignetting.

The strongest disadvantage of the lens can be considered not the best resistance to backlight. In some situations, the lens gives an image overloaded with flare. But in general, there is nothing wrong with the back and side light.

Of course, due to the 9-blade aperture, the lens gives very smooth circles in the out-of-focus area at any F. Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 has a pleasant bokeh, the transition from the out-of-focus area to the out-of-focus area is smooth. We can say that the Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 has its own 'pattern'. The lens can serve as a good portrait lens.

And sample photos using the 'Voigtlander Close-up Lens for 90mm F3.5 SL':

You can download RAW source files at this link (43 files in the '.ARW' and '.RAF' format, 820 MB). All photos are on-camera JPEG... All photos were taken with a Sony ILCE-7 (a7) (using a Nikon to Sony E adapter) and Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro (using a macro nozzle, the nozzle was installed in the first part of the composite hood, as shown in the photo below).

My experience... The Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 is a nice lens, but I am skeptical about all this composite hoods-drop-rings-macros and other stuff. I think that an extra add-on is added when the lens initially lacks something, and the Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 lacks aperture. Any modern fix 85 / 1.8 is almost 2 stops lighter than the Voigtlander 90 / 3.5. On the other hand, Voigtlander 90 / 3.5 is designed for those users who can smell the most important thing in it - nice picture.

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL N/AI-S (SL II) is a nice modern manual fix. It has an excellent assembly and a great nice picture. Included in the package is a macro nozzle for macro photography. The lens is not cheap, and therefore the person who buys it must be clearly aware of what he pays money for.

There is no picture at all. Nikon's zooms from previous reviews, IMHO, nicer. Well, either Sonya is so crap. Yes, and the lens itself is strange, dark, manual, like a portrait, useless, like a makrik uncomfortable. Apochromat with apochromatic pattern and at the same time a purple border.

    • fotika

put it on d810 or 5ds
and then the old lens you speak for, and then compare the equal.

        Put it on.

a good lens for a leisurely creative shooting, of course, you don’t shoot like that at weddings and other similar noisy events, but this is a little different creativity .. but if for yourself, for the soul, for thoughtful shooting, when you want to get something new, unusual, when tired of all these zooms, which every second one has, with their boring identical eyes pictures that look like each other like two drops of water. then you take out the Feucht and understand that this is a breath of fresh air, this is like a new opportunity to realize yourself. but before that, gentlemen, we must still grow!

  • Olegjan

650 forever green this lens is clearly not worth it.

    • fotika

      there are places for $500))

      • Andrei

        Well this changes the case!

  • zengarden

Voigtländer Photographic Zoom (SF) lenses, especially APOs, are known for their unsurpassed quality and high resolution. Accordingly, their prices are too high.
What is the resolution of this lens? for sure it is also enough for multi-megapixel full-format matrices. The lens is interesting, but only needed by those who appreciate it.
“Lanthar” in the name probably alludes to lanthanum glass?

    • zengarden

Ugh, I confused them with Rodenstock :) shame on me ... Voigtländer SF has camera lenses

in my opinion Jupiter-37A 135 / 3.5 + shank KP / AN + dandelion will be much better! and cheaper!

      different categories of optics.

then from your words the watering can is generally a bad camera, and they have such optics for themselves)))

      • anonym

Different price categories? Yes! Do you yourself, only in all honesty, see anything special in these photos? If yes, then what?

        • fotika

Nothing what is this (pictures) report? what should be in them?
somehow I’ll hook him up with me for shooting, and then I’ll throw you a couple of photos here.
I remember that I had this copy at my wedding paired with 58 1.4, both shot video on 610 (not professional, amateur) everything turned out very well.

this lens is for a narrow circle of people. nobody makes you buy it. if you begin to reason like this, then all the optics are bad, except for the one that is gathering dust in your backpack, or will be soon.

          • anonym

“This lens is for a narrow circle of people” - I know these people. They are either with a tightly stuffed wallet, or with an exorbitantly inflated desire to possess something that does not have it. Reportage, you say? Well, first of all, what was submitted we eat, and secondly there are other resources where you can evaluate this lens ... ..By the way, shooting at a wedding is a 2/3 reportage. But offhand two lenses from the same opera, which tear this usual, in fact, but very Narrowly applicable Voigtlander as a Tuzik heating pad - Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105 mm f / 2.8 G IF ED VR Tokina AT-X M100 PRO D AF 100 mm f / 2.8 Macro.

              Envy is a bad feeling.

As it is today, it is short, not expanded ...

              • fotika

It's probably not even a matter of envy (if this is not typical behavior), it is not popular with us because of the price. Well, marketing is a delicate matter (I'm talking about Nikon). Nobody cares about tokinas that turn yellow, and Nikon is generally from a different era and focal lengths, it's stupid to compare them.
The optical design, its size, sharpness and micro-contrast are the main advantages. Voigtlander is bought a lot for video, and who will tear whom is a very personal matter. Such optics are bought by people in whom taste has already been brought up, and they know how to shoot.

Any more or less decent lens will also shoot your wonderful food. A lens from a different era, by the way, unlike yours, has a built-in motor and stabilizer, if that. But our dear Arkady's review of the second one is “The so-called 'Tokin macro- weaving 'is one of the best lenses I've ever used. "I'm sure you are a very experienced photographer. It is all the more strange to hear these annoying mantras about yellowness ... Maybe I'm wrong about something, arguing with a person," taste has already been trained and he knows how to shoot. "

              • anonym

pictures with food are similar to those that the wife does on a mobile phone

            • Oleg

Beautiful box in the first photo with food. When I found out the price of Lake at the beginning, I was shocked. I think here’s Kenon 1100d; here’s Helios-44-2, everything’s fine, why pay extra. Photography is a very subjective thing, each looking for its zest

              • Andrei

                Exactly!

Please advise…. How this object looks against the Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor background.
And yet, are there any differences in the figure with the previous version? How much can they differ in price?
Thanks in advance for your comments!

I think 105 2.5 is more interesting. I don't know about the previous version of Lantar.
