Review of JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135

According provided by lens JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135 (with interchangeable shank KP-A / 42 and serial number 833546, KOMZ) many thanks to the reader of Radozhiva - Nikolai Nedin.

JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135

JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135

There are several modifications of JUPITER-37, produced at different times (approximate list):

  1. MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135, 1990-2002 (prefix 'MC' is placed before the lens name)
  2. Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135 MS, 1983-1986
  3. MC Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135, 1986-1989 (prefix 'MC' is placed before the lens name)
  4. Jupiter-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135, 1983-1984, shown in this review
  5. Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135since 1978
  6. Юпитер-37AМ 3,5/135, 1990-2002

This review presents an extremely rare lens variant - JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135. There is no exact data on what the mysterious 'H-30' means, but some thoughts on this can be found at ussrlens.com.

From other lenses JUPITER-37 version 'JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135'differs in another enlightenment and color of the depth of field and aperture marks. Front and back lenses cast pronounced lilac and green flowers. I did not find other visual and tactile differences.

Sample Photos

JUPITER-37A MS-N-30 3,5 / 135, like its close relatives, is abruptly insane. Multilayer enlightenment in this version does its job well, only in rare cases in the backlight does the picture get a veil-flare, it is extremely difficult to catch a glare.

How to use with modern cameras?

'A' lenses with an interchangeable shank, such as the one in this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both DSLR and mirrorless), just select correct adapter. The replacement 'A' shank usually has an external M42 thread and an 'H' mount (similar to Nikon F). For use on modern cameras, the easiest way is to add the required adapter from M42 to the desired system or from Nikon F to the desired system to this shank.

  • Artyom

ABOUT! Didn't even expect a review here!
    I will contribute:
Did tests between MS and MS-N-30. The difference is significant! It’s extremely difficult to catch glare! Sharpness and contrast exceed the MS version!
There were two copies: 831xxx and 833xxx. Enlightenment turned out to be a little different. One more in green, the other in blue. Both paint beautifully.
One sold, and the second no one takes ((
I highly recommend fans of Jupiter-37A!

    • Vladimir

And how much is your lens?

      • Artyom

The first for 8500r bought. The second for 5990r is now on sale.
(I hope you can talk about it here =))

        • Valery A.

You have a fertile land - in Volgograd they don't take them for 3-4tr.

          • Andrei

MS-N-30 is not gathering dust on every shelf, they could take it to the collection.
nobody will take ash stump for photographing at such a price.

In general, I would like to know where such a fertile land is located-)

          • Artyom

Sold one of them to another area. Offer me this version for 3000r and I will buy it!

            • Peleya

I would like to talk about buying an N-30 lens. Write to mail redhair8891@mail.ru

              • Artyom

You would answer letters further =)

        • Alexander

Recently acquired such a lens. I replaced the grease, cleaned it from oil, in which all the lenses and the diaphragm were smeared, compared today in terms of sharpness in the long-range plans with Jupiter-11A. Strange, but the older lens was better. I did not really check the gait resistance, but, according to my impressions, it is no better with contrast. I’m thinking which one to keep.

          • Artyom

            Good day!
And what is better? We are talking about enlightenment. Therefore, the most important thing is to compare them for loan resistance.
contrast could fall if the lenses were not cleaned well. a thin layer of fat remains almost always. What did you clean?
How much did you buy, if not secret? And for how much they are ready to give, if you do not leave it to yourself?)))

            • Alexander

I cleaned the lenses well; grease is excluded. carbon removes it perfectly. Today I compared the U-11a and the H-30 in the backlight - the lenses behave in exactly the same way. I'll keep the old man and sell a new rare specimen. I got it, we can say, for thanks))), I haven't decided on the sale price yet.

              • Artyom

I would be grateful if you write to the mail with the price of the question. Thank!
                zackrin@mail.ru

    • Paul

I also got an interest. I have been looking at this lens for a long time. Especially with great respect and trust I relate to the reviews and articles from Arkady. Do not write in the mail how many are ready to sell and is there a shank on Nikon?

      • Artyom

I do not know how to write to the mail from here. Find me on Avito in Russia, there is one such lens.

        • Sergei

And why is the enlightenment different for the same lenses in the photo on Avito? One is not MS-N-30, but just MS?

          • Artyom

I can not say why the different colors. But these are both MS-N-30! They both markedly differed in the color of enlightenment from the MS versions. Changing lenses for the sake of selling is stupid and my hand will not rise to this with rare specimens!

            • Arkady Shapoval

As my practice shows, enlightenment with Soviet lenses can walk from copy to copy without any explanation.

              • Sergei

The difference between these lenses is precisely in a special type of enlightenment, we read the name: JUPITER-37A MS-N-30, N-30 follows through a dash after MS, and not after JUPITER-37A. So there can be only one enlightenment color among this lens modification. Or maybe N is nano, is it N?))

              • Arkady Shapoval

Dreaming is not harmful. Again, as my practice shows, the color of the enlightenment can change in Soviet lenses for no reason, even if the lens of the same series is produced at the same factory and at approximately the same time. And if the factories are also different, then sometimes there is no logic at all.

              • Sergei

I disagree, the color cannot be different. Most likely, H-30 stands for “30 nanometer sputtering”. Simple MS with a chemical method of enlightenment.

              • Arkady Shapoval

Well, of course, theoretically it should be the same. But in practice it happens, all that you want.

      • Artyom

        Good day!
The MS-N-30 appeared in a new state. Even the etiquette from below on the bank is preserved.
        zackrin@mail.ru

    • Igor

I will buy for 4000 tr

      • Artyom

In this state, simple MS from 3500r. Thanks, I will refuse.

        • Igor

I bought 2 new ms, not used for 2 tr. and what state you have is not yet known, pictures are the case, you know how you can take them ...

          • Artyom

            1. So you buy for further resale. It turns out I have to give you these 2000r differences. It’s ridiculous.
            2. It is possible to exchange for a packet of milk at a granny with a grandmother. The fact that you are lucky to find for 2000r is not an indicator of market prices.
            3. Since such a conversation, then you can generally take the money and not send the goods.
            4. I have no habit of lying about the description of the goods when selling. As it is written and shown in the photo in the ad, it is! Also any photo or video at the request of the buyer.
So leave your "healing" discussions of pricing policy to yourself!
            Good luck ;)

            • Nicholas

Artem, write to me in the mail. I would like to purchase this lens at the price indicated on Avito!

Well, firstly, not for sale, but to myself and a friend, the seller had 7 of them in the package, I live in Kazan, they were made here. I’m interested in the real state of the lens, if it’s not used, then the price is adequate, but in the photo the feeling is that it’s good.

              • Artyom

The feeling is wrong. The lens is sold.

              • Igor

And who is the trader in the end? Who sells or buys ha!

              • anonym

“I bought 2 new ms, not used for 2 tr” - yes, you are a storyteller, dear friend.

              • Nicholas

Do you have a version of the H-30?)

  • anonym

Tell me how to screw Jupiter-37A on Pentax-k3? What kind of adapter do you need?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Depends on which tail Jupiter-37A has. If the tail is the same as in this review, then you need a simple M42-Pentax K adapter, if the tail is under Nikon (KP-A / N), then it is better to replace it with the KP-A / 42 tail and put it through the M42-Pentax K.

    • Dmitry Ivanov (St. Petersburg)

      Good day!
With your permission, Arkady, I will add about the installation on Pentax. You can buy an adapter T-mount - Pentax K (for example, Samyang)) pull out the core and put the remaining bayonet part instead of the replaceable shank.

      • anonym

Thanks for the idea! Hesitated to look for the adapter KP / AN.

        • Dmitry Ivanov (St. Petersburg)

To your health! Only the idea is not mine) It’s just that the Internet was wool for a long time and now I found it.
I spied on an interesting person (unfortunately I do not know what their name is, but it seems like a pentaxist :)) if not against Arkady, here is the link http://somethings.narod.ru/FT/2013-08-1/.

        • anonym

          Similarly!

  • Igor

Awesome lens. In general, the Yu37 is good, but this N-30 seems to be the best of all modifications, but rarely on sale.

  • Sergei

For that kind of money, you can take a used Apo Telezenitar M 135 / 2.8 on Nikon

    • Lynx

or one or two eleventh taira. )))

  • Sergei

Judging by the pictures in the review, this version of the lens is still different from the usual MS with a better color of the case; in simple MS it is like scales, and it peels off on the ring of the depth of field scale. On all versions of Jupiter-37, the ring with the name of the lens and the serial number above the front lens is plastic, it can be easily twisted, unscrupulous sellers can use this: sell a non-MS lens with a screwed-on MS ring, or a simple MS with a ring from MS-N-30.
Arkady, the review does not indicate, and the aperture blades are somewhat different from other versions of Jupiter-37A?

    • Arkady Shapoval

As for the petals, they are the same as in the other versions, because my review states:

I did not find other visual and tactile differences.

The copy from the review is practically new, I'm sure if you use it, the paint will peel off in the same way. Also, about the assembly - there are paint stains on the lens, bloopers with paint right on the body, it seems that the factory was in a hurry to paint it faster (real craftsmen paint like this) Pulling out of the case, the lens, like most Soviet optics, stinks of lubricants. Diaphragm petals in oil. I do not think that the assembly is better than the original Yu-37A.

      • anonym

Not solid like that, Arkady. Too categorical. Your confidence is not based on anything. Here is a lens that I have been actively using since 1985 (Zenit, Nikon). Nothing "peeled off", "did not stink", nor was it covered with oil during this time ...

        • anonym

          Here's another.

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Take a closer diaphragm :)

          • anonym

I think that's enough for someone who wants to know about its "vitality." I just wanted to show the state of this lens after 30 years of use without unfounded statements and assumptions. It's strange that in response you sounded an incomprehensible irony ... Well, come on. We are all different ...

            • Arkady Shapoval

This is not irony, remove the diaphragm, see if it is in oil.

    • Alexander

No matter how. On its H-30, the paint from the ring with aperture marks (which is near the tail) is scraped off with a fingernail, because she herself climbed into small pieces. But there was one more under this layer, so everything is fine).

  • Dmitry

Arkady, but is there any way in you to compare this version head-on-head with the usual non-MS? For example, with the usual Yu37a, repeat the photo from the review above in the same place and under the same lighting conditions? Of particular interest is the difference in side and backlight.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      There is no possibility.

  • Alexey

Arkady, but I have Jupiter 37a MS in general. You do not have this in your reviews, enlightenment is exactly the same as in this review.

  • Alexey

Damn, dumb. There is one on the list. I apologize. But all the same, my enlightenment is exactly the same in appearance as the lens in this review. I can’t attach a photo, the site is swearing.

  • Ilya

I’ve bought Olympic for 100 rubles, it’s just lucky
this is nonsense. The red price tag is 2.500 rubles, no more. For 5-7k you can already take normal autofocus optics or tair

    • Alexander

They give such money for him, not because he has excellent optical properties, but because he is rare. He himself acquired this, in fact, for 0 rubles (along with another photo junk).

  • anonym

Tell me, in general, the old Soviet optics is comparable in characteristics with modern optics for DSLRs, for example Canon? And does it make sense to poke around with adapters?

    • Dmitry

In Soviet optics there were several successful models (mainly successful copies of the Zeiss), however, they did not shine against the background of foreign analogues: the technical backwardness of the USSR affected (the worst quality of optical glass and the lack of high-quality anti-reflection technologies)

Of the successful Soviet I would single out Jupiter 37a, Helios 81 and Helios 44-M6. There is an open diaphragm working, and the contrast is quite bearable by today's standards.
It makes sense to take Soviet glasses if you really want to play around and get an unusual pattern of blurring the background (twisted bokeh), and only if they are asked for inexpensively (which has recently been called into question)

Otherwise, it’s better to buy something from the real price of those years

The website ussrlens.com refers to a special TU3-3.105-80, which was allegedly a state order, and in this regard, the price of the lens according to TU3-3.105-80 differed from the price of the lens according to TU3-3.2022-87 upwards (100 rubles / 120 rubles .), today I purchased Jupiter-37A MS, which is not Jupiter-37A MS-N-30 at all, but according to the label on the case, my lens Jupiter-37A MS is made in accordance with TU3-3.105-80, and most interestingly, it costs cheaper Jupiter-37A MS-N-30 (120 rubles) - 100 rubles. smooth. I didn’t like Jupiter-37A as a portrait lens, it’s too sharp and contrasting with the open one, all skin imperfections appear. Tair-11 is much more delicate to the skin and performs better portrait tasks.

Ivan, does the MS-N-30 really have any advantages over the regular version 37A?
I am particularly interested in the quality of blurring (some say that the MS-N-30 has it better), cyanosis (I have the usual version and the cyanosis is noticeable in the pictures), as well as resistance to flare.

  • Ivan

Normal 37 A Olympic, but the comparison seems to me not quite true, there were different conditions, you need to take a picture, attach another lens and then make a second one
