Mamiya-Sekor 50 mm F / 2 Auto

Mamiya-Sekor 50 mm F / 2 Auto

Auto mamiya / sekor 1: 2 f = 50mm - old manual fifty kopeck piece for cameras with M42 mounting thread. The lens was originally produced for the Mamiya / Sekor DTL series cameras (models 500, 1000, 2000). There are several modifications of this lens, which differ in the color of the body, the M <-> A switch and the spelling of the lens name (mamiya / sekor or MAMIYA-SEKOR). This review presents a version of the lens with chrome inserts.

Auto mamiya / sekor 1: 2 f = 50mm is perfectly assembled, as it should be with an old metal lens. The focus ring is metal, ribbed and rotates on 270 degreesmaking focusing simple and enjoyable. During focusing, the frame rim moves forward, but does not rotate. Focusing is carried out by moving the entire lens block.

The lens has the usual fifty dollars aperture, and, unfortunately, most likely, a simple chemical enlightenment of optics, which makes it very weak when working in backlight. In the backlight, the lens simply chokes on the amount of glare, ghosting, rainbows and flare.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

Image quality

The lens is not very sharp at f / 2.0, when the aperture is closed, the sharpness returns to normal. Sharpness at f / 2.0 is enough for what is now called 'creative expression' :). The lens has good contrast, which suffers a little from spherical aberrations and drops a lot when working in backlight and side light, where the lens shows itself very poorly. I would also like to note the unpretentious bokeh and, in general, a pleasant pattern.

I would not say that Auto mamiya / sekor 1: 2 f = 50mm boasts something special. Test photos below.

You can download RAW source files at this link (38 files in the '.ARW' format, 800 MB). All photos are on-camera JPEG from the Sony a7 camera, there are more photos in the archive when shooting at infinity. On a full-length mirrorless camera Sony a7 I used a lens with an adapter without any problems M42-NEX.

Results

Auto mamiya / sekor 1: 2 f = 50mm is a simple and pleasant lens that does not stand out in any way among thousands of other fifty dollars of the past. The lens does not tolerate backlight very well; it is better to use it with a hood. Creates a pleasing image overall. Due to its low cost, it can serve as a classic creative fifty dollars.

    Hello Arkady!
Many thanks to you for the photo "enlightenment"!

    Tell me please:
I really like the lenses of this brand. I want to take it.
But I notice that on mamiya glasses for 35 mm, almost always enlightenment is dark yellow-brown.
Is this a sign of thorium / radioactivity?
    Or is there another explanation?
I do not want to be exposed to unjustified risk once again.

Slavon covered himself on the cob of thorium dioxide ...
