Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI

Everything is simple with Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI - this is a manual fisheye (i.e. fisheye) lens for Nikon DX cameras. The lens provides 180 degrees of view (diagonally) and has uncorrected distortion, which in this case serves as a lens counter. Fisheye is always fun.

The previous version of the lens was called Samyang AE 8mm 1: 3.5 FISH-EYE CS Aspherical NI (according to the labels on the lens barrel). Versions are easily identified by the color of the decorative ring. The first version has a yellow ring, the second, shown in this review, is red. Version differences are described here.

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical is also available for other systems and under different names (Bower, Rokinon, etc.). The Nikon version is marked 'NI' on the body.

Please note that Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II NI has microprocessor contacts, but this does not mean that the lens has auto focus. These contacts are for measuring exposure on younger Nikon cameras and for automatic iris control. Focusing with a lens is always manual. Due to the large depth of field, the focus ring is almost always set to infinity, for a fisheye lens, manual focusing is not a big problem.

The lens options for Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II for other systems do not have such contacts.

Important: for the ability to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the value F / 22. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, it has F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 values, it is impossible to set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can be set only through the camera menu. It's strange that there is no intermediate value on the ring between F / 3.5 and F / 5.6. There is no latch for the diaphragm ring. The diaphragm control ring is plastic.

Despite the fact that the lens is equipped with CPU contacts, it cannot be used to adjust the sound confirmation of focus and, of course, an analog focus traps, which allows you to take a picture only with accurate focusing. Such a trifle could be very easily solved using another microprocessor programming technique.

В instructions it is indicated that the lens can give sound confirmation of focusing (literally 'sound signaling'), but I could not get such confirmation.

Lens does not transmit information about the focusing distance to the subject, which may interfere with the comfortable working with the flash in automatic TTL modes. Although, who shoots fish with a flash?

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI

The lens itself is well assembled. The focus ring is rubberized and rotates smoothly 90 degrees. It may seem that the lens uses internal focusing, but, in fact, the front lens moves a little (only 1-2 mm). There is a focus distance scale, but there is no depth of field scale. I believe that a serious drawback of the lens is very large minimum focus distance, which is equal to 30 cm. Due to this drawback, the ability to use the lens for creative work with perspective is lost, removing small objects. For example, Nikon DX AF Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm 1: 2.8G ED has an MDF equal to 14 cm, which allows much wider use of the unusual transmission of perspective by an ultra-wide-angle fisheye lens.

Due to the highly convex front lens, Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II cannot use filters. The front cover has a large width to close the lens of the lens.

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II uses a removable hood. It would seem that this is not a very useful update compared to the first version of the lens, but as it turned out, this is a very interesting opportunity to use the lens on full-size cameras as a circular fisheye. Without a lens hood on full-length cameras in Nikon FX mode, the lens creates a circular image in the center of the frame. Thus, Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II turns into an ultra-wide circular (circular) fisheye lens with a 180-degree view in all directions, and becomes similar, for example, MS Bearing 3,5 / 8A (aka Belomo EWP Fisheye Lens MC 3.5 / 8 A Made in Belarus).

The lens shows poor sharpness at F / 3.5, but it’s pretty good on covered apertures, especially in the F / 8-F / 11 range. Strong chromatic aberration. 6-blade aperture creates 6 ray stars from bright light sources that not everyone likes :). The lens catches glare due to the fact that it has a very large field of view coverage, glare is almost always present.

Results

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI is an inexpensive, modern manual fish. On Nikon DX cameras, it can be used as a diagonal fisheye, and on Nikon FX cameras, if you remove the hood, it turns into a circular fisheye lens. I would like to highlight the good assembly and the presence of a microprocessor for convenient operation on any Nikon CZK.

Thank you for attention. Arkady Shapoval

Good day. I would like to see reviews on all Samyang lenses and listen to your point of view about these lenses.

    • Lynx

      good morning.
I think if you send all the Samyang lenses to Arcadia, he will be happy to do a series of reviews.

    panorama!!! offset!

Dmitry has a panorama of a place familiar to me: a failure in Krivoy Rog.
    1. Failure refers to w. them. Ordzhonikidze, and not to sh. them. Lenin.
    2. Live failure looks completely different from the panorama. In the panorama, it seems narrow and long, but in fact - wide. On my camera (D5100) I made a preliminary estimate: a panorama at FR = 50mm from vertical frames, the shooting point was the area of the destroyed trunk w. Chervona-Ventilation. Unfortunately, at that moment I didn't have a tripod with me, so I could take pictures in a normal way. :(

On the issue of usability, when you click on a picture on the page with a list of articles, you expect to see not an enlarged picture, but the article itself, this is generally accepted.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the feedback.

Well, since the improvement of the site has gone, I recommend making the up button in the left margin (like VKontakte, for example), otherwise the word “up” on a translucent background merges with the text and is not visible. And the button itself is small. And the thrill would be the need to register for commenting with a delay of 24 hours. Inadequate cuts out at times. In general, you can make a separate branch according to the proposals on the site - who can not only advise, but also implement. Otherwise, it's not all to remake for free

        • BB

Regarding the registration - I agree (and even ask some primitive "photo question" during registration), but a day, of course, is too much.

As for the interface, there is no need to overload it, there is, for example, the “Home” button on the keyboard, it performs the “up” function :-)

          • Dmitry K

so the day is only the first time to wait. Then registered and write as much as you want. This technique protects one person with different nicknames from entering under different names and endless bans. You can bind to mail or something else. There are plenty of options to choose from. The main thing is that after registration immediately it was impossible to write. 4 hours at least. Then if the user kicks, then he will sit for 4 hours (preferably a day) before registering again and writing nonsense. And adequate people will pass such an excerpt for the first time and will calmly write further in working order.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Registration on Radozhiv will not be.

          • BB

The function “edit comment” is not enough - sometimes you miss something, sometimes just unpleasant “misspellings” happen (I often read / write from a smartphone, and sometimes I miss the keys on a PC)). Some resources have limited editing time - for example, 15 minutes after publication, others can be edited until your comment is “answered”. I would really like your blog to have such a function.

... if there was a registration it would be easier to do it, without registration it is also possible using the session id, but I don’t know how difficult it is to do this on your platform.

"The lens is catching glare because of that" - fix it, please.)
PS Thank you Arkady for the site, I read it with pleasure, learned a lot of interesting things about photo iron and the technical aspect of photography in general.)

On my own behalf, I can add that recently my camera with this lens fell on a marble floor, along with a tripod ... The blow hit exactly the hood (it just cracked). The lens itself broke into two halves: the bayonet (which was ripped out of the camera) and the block lenses (which rolled back a meter and a half). So, a familiar master has collected for me for 300 UAH. - everything works: aperture and focus and sharpness. The camera is also intact. Believe me, it's fantastic, but I'm sure it's all thanks to the super-hood that caught the blow so. And the build quality is very pleasing.

  • Peter Sh.

Arkady, tell me, did you straighten any pictures in the gallery?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Own - no, indicated in the review.

  • Nicholas

I myself am the owner of such a lens and I can say that it is very resistant to glare. I’ve shot sunsets against the sun more than once, and not a single lens flare was captured.
    Question to all those present.
Is it possible to shoot panoramas from several frames with subsequent gluing?

    • Igor

Nikolay, I’m shooting panoramas on Zenitar 16mm F2.8 on the crop.
If interested, I can throw off examples later.

      • Nicholas

Thank you, Igor, look. It will be glad if you tell how you do it. I can make panoramas with an ordinary lens, but after fisheye it’s not possible to glue the frames together normally.

        • Igor

Shot on Zenitar 16mm F2.8 in conjunction with the Nikon D3100.

        • Igor

And here is another panorama. Stitched through PTGui. Same bunch of Zenith and Nikon.
If interested, then ask for details: http://vk.com/ugryumov_igor

        • Yaroslav

I sew circular through PTGUI, there you just need to set FullFrame Fisheye, focus and crop factor.

    • Andrew

I also have the same for the panorama try shooting in portrait position and overlapping frames at 20% and then gluing in photoshop.

  • Vasily Artamonov

Fisheye is a specific lens, not for frequent use, for someone it can just play around, therefore, I think, if you want a diagonal fisheye, it is purely economically practical to buy a Peleng for a crop or Zenitar-16 for a fullframe. I myself use Zenitar-16 on 5D MkII - I'm happy, for example, a few photos:

Arkady will there be a review on Shirik Samuyang for FF?

  • Andrei

Arkady, can MS Peleng 8a be considered a similar lens to this Samyang? Who would you prefer?

  • Andrew

I have the same only the first version. He is very pleased! I noticed that on the Nikon D5100 and Nikok D7000 it is much sharper with me than on the full frame of the D600. Today I use it on a Macrod 3Th system, sharpening again is not very good, only with 5.6 is better. For crop two (panasonic GH4, olympus M5) I like the distortion less and still quite widely. In general, Samyang lenses are very good, especially for the video I still have a 35mm 1.4 separate song, a very good lens. My example below is shot on a Nikon D7000

    "Although, who shoots with flash?"
I shot this fish with a flash, and only with a flash to the ceiling in the room. But how do you take a photo in a room with poor lighting at aperture 8 without a flash? even if you succeed, even if you set the aperture to 5,6 (the maximum open on this lens, then the soap), you get a very low-contrast photo with faded colors.
I attach a photo, everything with a flash

I don't quite understand if you can use the lens on a full frame? I have nikon d610. There is an opportunity to buy a used 1st version for 5 tons :-) So they are thinking about it. Thanks…
