Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI

Everything is simple with Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI - this is a manual fisheye (i.e. fisheye) lens for Nikon DX cameras. The lens provides 180 degrees of view (diagonally) and has uncorrected distortion, which in this case serves as a lens counter. Fisheye is always fun.

The previous version of the lens was called Samyang AE 8mm 1: 3.5 FISH-EYE CS Aspherical NI (according to the labels on the lens barrel). Versions are easily identified by the color of the decorative ring. The first version has a yellow ring, the second, shown in this review, is red. Version differences are described here.

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical is also available for other systems and under different names (Bower, Rokinon, etc.). The Nikon version is marked 'NI' on the body.

Please note that Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II NI has microprocessor contacts, but this does not mean that the lens has auto focus. These contacts are for measuring exposure on younger Nikon cameras and for automatic iris control. Focusing with a lens is always manual. Due to the large depth of field, the focus ring is almost always set to infinity, for a fisheye lens, manual focusing is not a big problem.

The lens options for Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II for other systems do not have such contacts.

Important: for the ability to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the value F / 22. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, it has F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 values, it is impossible to set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can be set only through the camera menu. It's strange that there is no intermediate value on the ring between F / 3.5 and F / 5.6. There is no latch for the diaphragm ring. The diaphragm control ring is plastic.

Despite the fact that the lens is equipped with CPU contacts, it cannot be used to adjust the sound confirmation of focus and, of course, an analog focus traps, which allows you to take a picture only with accurate focusing. Such a trifle could be very easily solved using another microprocessor programming technique.

В instructions it is indicated that the lens can give sound confirmation of focusing (literally 'sound signaling'), but I could not get such confirmation.

Lens does not transmit information about the focusing distance to the subject, which may interfere with the comfortable working with the flash in automatic TTL modes. Although, who shoots fish with a flash?

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI

The lens itself is well assembled. The focus ring is rubberized and rotates smoothly 90 degrees. It may seem that the lens uses internal focusing, but, in fact, the front lens moves a little (only 1-2 mm). There is a focus distance scale, but there is no depth of field scale. I believe that a serious drawback of the lens is very large minimum focus distance, which is equal to 30 cm. Due to this drawback, the ability to use the lens for creative work with perspective is lost, removing small objects. For example, Nikon DX AF Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm 1: 2.8G ED has an MDF equal to 14 cm, which allows much wider use of the unusual transmission of perspective by an ultra-wide-angle fisheye lens.

Due to the highly convex front lens, Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II cannot use filters. The front cover has a large width to close the lens of the lens.

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II uses a removable hood. It would seem that this is not a very useful update compared to the first version of the lens, but as it turned out, this is a very interesting opportunity to use the lens on full-size cameras as a circular fisheye. Without a lens hood on full-length cameras in Nikon FX mode, the lens creates a circular image in the center of the frame. Thus, Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II turns into an ultra-wide circular (circular) fisheye lens with a 180-degree view in all directions, and becomes similar, for example, MS Bearing 3,5 / 8A (aka Belomo EWP Fisheye Lens MC 3.5 / 8 A Made in Belarus).

The lens shows poor sharpness at F / 3.5, but it’s pretty good on covered apertures, especially in the F / 8-F / 11 range. Strong chromatic aberration. 6-blade aperture creates 6 ray stars from bright light sources that not everyone likes :). The lens catches glare due to the fact that it has a very large field of view coverage, glare is almost always present.

Results

Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI is an inexpensive, modern manual fish. On Nikon DX cameras, it can be used as a diagonal fisheye, and on Nikon FX cameras, if you remove the hood, it turns into a circular fisheye lens. I would like to highlight the good assembly and the presence of a microprocessor for convenient operation on any Nikon CZK.

Thank you for attention. Arkady Shapoval

Tell me (confused) the Chako 8mm f 3.5 aspherical if mc fisheye lens is a clone / twin / fake for Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5?

    • Sergei

More likely (Chako) is a samyang clone that is sold under a different brand for certain reasons (marketing).

      • Nicholas

Sergey, that's right. As an employee of Chako, I’ll add further clarification. The lenses
Chako 8mm f / 3.5 Aspherical IF MC Fish-eye has been ordered under our brand on Samyang product lines since the beginning of 2014. In addition, under our brand, the Chako 500mm f / 6.3 Mirror telephoto lens was released (aka Bower / Rokinon / Samyang 500mm f / 6.3 Mirror)

Tell me - is the lens completely made of metal or what?

I also shoot panoramas on it, the quality seems to be good, which turns out you can see http://www.virtualniytur.ru/

    Thank you for the review!

Can Dima kindly share with us the secrets of processing images from this glass in full frame? How to remove dimming without hard cropping, in which the whole point of using it on FF is lost? Thanks for the review!

    Good day!
I select equipment for spherical panoramas. The question is tormenting, in the context of spherical panoramas, is this glass more suitable for Nikon with its 1,5 crop or can you work with 1,6 canon too? I have not yet decided on the system, but in the canon, auto-bracketing is attractive even on the younger model (EOS1300) and automatic HDR, for example, on the EOS200.
    Thanks for the advice!

  • Elena

    Good afternoon!
Tell me, please, is it suitable for Nikon D5000?
If not, could you please tell Fish Eye for this model at a more or less similar price?
    Thank you very much
    Yours faithfully,
    Elena

    • Alexey Shch

The quote from the article is “lens for Nikon DX cameras”. Nikon D5000 is a DX camera. Everything will do.

        Thank you!

Hello tell me how to calculate the hyperfocal distance for the crop on different apertures on the subject for Nikon ?? Thank you in advance

  • Freddy

I really like how the panorama is inserted on this page. Usually it’s very inconvenient for sites to view panoramas, you turn them in one direction and the image goes in the opposite direction. You have inserted the panorama very neatly. How did you do that? I did not find a solution for WordPress. On instantcms, my panoramas look like israel-eilat.ru/3d but this is a Ricoh Theta camera. I am looking for a fish eye for my Nikon D7000.

    Hello.
Just hint how the panorama is built into the site? https://radojuva.com/wp-content/uploads/pano_santana_kran/pano_santana_kran.html

    Do not mislead readers!
On 24x36mm matrices, the so-called full-frame, this lens is NOT a circular fish eye !!!

  • Alexander

Good afternoon, is such a lens suitable for astro-landscapes?

    • Michael

Yes, only with sharpness in the course of the problem, and at night to cover the diaphragm is not ice

    • RA4ADF

The sharpness of this (I have a previous version, with a gold ring) lens is normal. True, I had to do the adjustment to infinity. Judging by the inscription found under the rubber ring, the factory set up for MDF. Covering the diaphragm is more than offset by an increase in shutter speed.
Of course, for a serious astrophoto and optics is different. For landscapes, I think it’s quite normal.
Here is an example. Beach village Agoy. A lantern shone quietly from a neighboring base, behind the rocks a couple km away. Tuapse. Exposure time 30 sec.

Hello. Can you please tell me, I ordered a very similar Neewer 8mm f / 3,5 lens, is this one of the clones from the review?
