Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

According provided by lens Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII) huge thanks to the store www.fotika.com.uawhere you can find a huge number of different used photographic equipment, including given Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII).

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII, from this review) is an updated version of an older lens - Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI).

The differences between MKII and MKI are very few:

  1. The MKI version was produced from September 1986 to August 1990, and the MKII from September 1990 to 1999. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII) is probably the only lens that was produced almost until 2000 and has not been updated before 'D'versions.
  2. MKI has a plastic inconvenient focus ring, unlike the wider and rubberized MKII.
  3. Lenses have different ring retainers aperture in the F / 22 position - the MK I has a regular latch button, the MK II has a toggle button (it is usually called a “slider”).
  4. In MKI, the letter “M” near the macro-mode lock button, as well as near the value of “28 mm focal length” is white, in the MKII version it was repainted orange. Also, in the MKII version, the distance in feet is yellow, and the MKI is white.
  5. Perhaps the MKII version has an updated enlightenment, as well as some improvements inside the lens, there is no exact data.

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI, MKII) is one of the very first Nikon Nikkor zoom lenses with auto focus support. The following is a list of these lenses:

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI)
  2. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI)
  3. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI)
  4. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI)
  5. Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

These lenses were introduced in the fall of 1986. Their common feature is a plastic narrow focus ring, which, most likely, should indicate the prevalence of auto focus over manual. As a result, users did not like such an inconvenient focus ring, and soon the lenses were updated to versions with a more pleasant manual focus ring (all but Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4).

Despite the fact that the optical design of the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII) was developed back in 1984, and it has already been 15 years since the end of production of the lens, the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5- 4.5 (MKII) works great and can delight you with your picture. Of course, the lens lacks the contrast and sharpness that is inherent in modern Nikkor lenses, but it is not bad at all, and sometimes even very good. In the end, the lens made its contribution to lens construction and now it can act as super-cheap full-time zoom for full format cameras. They joke about such lenses that they are “a lens-gag for a bayonet, kept just in case of fire”. Given its good build, the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 MKII will be able to outlast many of today's'N'- lenses.

  • Yarkiya

Fotika stepped up, nice, thanks for the lens, and Arkady by itself for the review.

  • anonym

Only something is suitable for leisurely shooting for the purpose of practice. Of the minuses noted. NON-D and quite heavy. Aperture 4.5 is rather conventional ... I would recommend to everyone 28-80 3.5-5.6 it is cheaper and more advanced, also there are 58mm filters, I think many have such (the standard of Kenon whales is 18-55 and some fifty dollars, including Nikkor 50 mm 1.8 G )

    • BB

28-80 class will be lower, therefore the price and quality are appropriate

    • varezhkin

      and even better 28-80G 3.3-5.6.

  • anonym

The lens is a lens, quite to itself. And here's the camera! What picture! Drooling flowed ...

    • Alex

“The lens is a lens, quite to itself. And here's the camera! What picture! Drooling began to flow ... "

Honestly, I personally don't even know what to say to such nonsense ...)) That is, if you insert anything into a good camera, then the picture will be drawn by itself? Brilliant!

      • Lynx

        * rather what colors.
it’s just that Arcadia used ghoul on this review.

  • Alex

And about the lens - wonderful glass with excellent Japanese build quality. Yes, he loves light, but under appropriate conditions it gives excellent quality for minimal money. You can buy now on ebay for an average of $ 100. from Japan.

    • anonym

I know where else you can insert such a “funky” lens!

      • anonym

“I know where else you can insert such a“ funky ”lens!”

Apparently, you have already had a lot of "sub-lenses" inserted there ...)))

        • anonym

          fool!))

          • Gesha Exhale

Anonymous, it looks like your "bayonet" is already tightly fitted once you immediately know where to insert it. :)

    • Gesha Exhale

Alexander, it’s just not clear where you saw such prices en Ibei on average for 100 cu? I have not seen such a lens cheaper than 250 bucks. On the contrary, it happens two times more expensive, this is a serious glass, and optically I see it cooler than the same fashionable and modern Nicorr 24-70 mm which costs an unjustifiably a lot of money for some reason.

      • Alex

most likely, you are looking in the wrong place, or you are not looking very carefully)) You can buy for 80 ... (NOT ADVERTISING!) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-AF-NIKKOR-28-85mm-F-3-5-4-5-Excellent-Zoom-Lens-from-Japan-136-/262842616420?hash=item3d32a40a64:g:gIAAAOSw5cNYmtvs
If you intend to buy, I recommend considering only sellers from Japan. Firstly, they will never be thrown, buy exactly what you paid for. Second, the description and photo of such quality and with such details that the choice is simple. The most important thing is to read the description VERY carefully. It should only be like this:
        There is no balsam separation.
There is no fog on the inside of the lens.
        It has no tiny fungus.
        It has no small scratch.
This lens works fine with no problems.
They honestly write if there are jambs. Quality should be Excellent +, ++, +++. I took one that I doubt that they used it at all.
        Good luck

        • Gesha Exhale

Oh, sorry moa, I messed up the reviews thinking that I was unsubscribing to a 35-70 mm review. Guilty, I’ll correct it.

          • Alex

            Well, I tried ...)))

        • Robert

I didn’t always take it once according to the description 35-70 af sent 35-70 mf (3.3 and so on) I think I definitely need to check

        • Gesha Exhale

And this obik at my place is at home, an interesting instance, maybe even bokeh, the sharpness is not easy. But the bastard is dreary in focusing, you can skip the right moment while he is focusing.

And a year ago they somehow roughly twisted it to me and now the FR works only from 28 mm to 50 mm. Heze what to do, but the repair will cost about the price I bought it. In general, an ass. I think to buy a screwdriver and disassemble it myself ...

          • Alex

Mine, as I said, has been in a box almost all my life, most likely) Focuses quite normally. He doesn't break records, of course, with a screwdriver, but yes - for a leisurely shooting) Well, for that kind of money, it's ridiculous to demand something. I really like the pictures

            • Gesha Exhale

So that's just the point, his optics are decent, I would say that the lens is quite professional. HERE to nude him in some workshop and make focusing faster.

  • szege

Hello everyone!!! I have been using this lens for 2 years now and have been using the Nikon D700. What can I say, I usually use the fan in clear weather, I am very pleased with the results. I used it with the D300, then put it in the nightstand because there was no point in selling it. I think it will be useful to everyone who doesn’t has particularly high requirements for glass, and wants to get a good picture for little money.

  • Valery

I compared both versions of this lens, I wanted to choose which one is better for myself. The picture is exactly the same, but because of the construct, the second one seemed more convenient (although I left the MKI for myself, based on the general condition of the lens). I unambiguously consider, purely my personal opinion, that for the money - an excellent lens. And, to be honest, after working with such old people, you don't want to take modern plastic rattles in your hands, despite the many advantages of the latter.

    • Alexey DV

There are no advantages there, continuous marketing ... I am glad that more and more people shake off advertising noodles and finally realize that nothing has been gained in the last "digital years", but only wasted ... I will sing the old song again and advise 35-70 \ 2,8D ... Maximum quality for minimum money!

  • Peter Sh.

Yes, a great lens. For me personally, unfortunately, it is useless since big and heavy.
I'm shooting an old plastic squalor Nikon 28-80 f / 3.3-5.6G. Nothing, much more pluses, I can put it in my pocket, again.

An interesting fix has appeared - Mitakon Speedmaster 85 mm f / 1.2. http://www.lenstip.com/443.1-Lens_review-Mitakon_Speedmaster_85_mm_f_1.2_Introduction.html - on the last page - pictures. Of course, it is inferior to Otus 85 / 1.4, but it costs only 799 bucks - which is inexpensive for such glass.

    • Andrei

and around the corner of the cows are milked

  • anonym

The lens was very cool at one time, but the new 24-85 is much better

  • Alexander Trekhsotkovich

I have not been here for a long time.
Thanks to the store fotika.com.ua for providing the lens for review.
A special thanks to Arkady for a great review. Arkady, as before, continues line by line to write excellent content for amateur photographers. Good luck to you Arkady in this important matter. You are the best. I’m happy every day grows. All the best to you Arkady. Have a great summer and holidays.

  • Vasily

I apologize for the offtopic: specifically for Trekhsotkovich, a link to the comparative Eutifee tests of Fuji X-E1 and Pyadvak:
    http://evtifeev.com/26914-obzor-fotokameryi-fuji-x-e1.html
    http://evtifeev.com/27081-obzor-fotokameryi-fuji-x-e1-ch-2.html
    http://evtifeev.com/27219-obzor-fotokameryi-fuji-x-e1-ch-3.html

I would like a comment from Trehsotkovich as the owner of x-e2.

    • Alexander Trekhsotkovich

I did not want to answer so as not to litter in the branch, but I will answer.
Vasily if you personally like the Canon 5D Mark2 and I’ll prove to you now that x-e2 is better in some way, will you switch to x-e2? Why raise empty arguments? Each photographer will choose a camera for his wallet and personal feelings, regardless of the opinions of any Trekhsotkovichi and Yevtifeev. We will not be children. Appreciate and love the camera that you now have in your hands.

  • Basil

The fact of the matter is that I have not decided yet. Really face the choice of boots 5d, boots 5d Mark 2 or still take one of Fujai x-e2 or x-t1? Today I am inclined to 5d boots (without marks), which is 12.8 Mpixels. But I also look at the fuji. At first I wanted to take some water, but the people scared that it was very fragile. So I would like to know your opinion. Now, having read the Yeftefey branch about Fuji tests to the end, it seems to me that the article about Fuji is custom-made, but this is just a sensation.

    • Alexander Trekhsotkovich

Basil, the Canon 5D is the one that has 12.8 megapixels. A wonderful camera. If you need a camera so that there is no no and to make money with it, then it’s better to take a SLR camera, that is, Canon, which, as I understand it, is to your liking. And if you need a camera for home and travel, it is better Fujifilm, but not X-E1, as Lynx told you already, autofocus there is really different from X-E2. Again, if I take it for home, I don’t see the point in X-T1, because the big and expensive X-E2 will do the same for less money. I don’t shoot at all for money now, and I use X-E2 only for home purposes, and this camera completely suits me, my verdict is that Fujifilm is a camera for those people who take pictures for the soul and for themselves, thoughtfully, in a hurry, and without editing further frames. For the professional element of weddings and photo shoots, I would recommend you any SLR, at least Canon, at least Nikon, at least Sony, the one that falls into your hand, but the SLR. Do not entertain yourself with the illusions that Fujifilm is a camera for wedding photography, or commercial photo shoots.

      • Basil

        Thanks for the advice!

    • Lynx

X-e1 is not necessary. If you take a Fujik, either X-e2 (you can, but not the buzz itself) or x-t1, or the new xt-10.
At the same time, realizing that glass is EXPENSIVE, and there is no second market for them. Those. a carcass is half the battle.
Fujik is taken under one thing, a nickel under another.
      ....
soaking - generally about the third. Arkady, for example, is happy with his. So do I.

      • Basil

Thanks for the answer. Apparently, you still need to take 5D and not speak.

        • Lynx

It all strongly depends on "why".

  • Alexander Trekhsotkovich

Lynx, but X-E2 is placed in the pocket of a sports jacket with a 27mm pancake, but X-T10 and X-T1 are already gone :) You are 100% right about glasses and resales. And if you take Fujik, then take black. Do not take silver. I got burned on this and I warn everyone. I am a neat user, but my fudge is already scratched, and the worst thing is that there is a black putty under the silver paint, and the scratches are sooo visible because of this, on black they would be practically invisible.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Sorry no S5 PRO red :)

Thanks Arkady, as always on top.

  • Alexander Goncharov

Thank you Arkady for useful information.

Tell me where they downloaded the repair info, I have the same trouble, but only by 28mm (

    • nelson

So the brain came up with it, just on the front element (which rotates) the lens block is fixed by 3rd guzhony. Here you loosen them and rotate the lens block so that at the minimum focusing distance the groove (on the MK-1 modification) is strictly below. It just turns out that the front lenses that are responsible for focusing do not finish to the end. And it turns out that the MDF is not 80cm as expected, but 2-3 meters.

  • anonym

Hello! Someone can tell you what the matter is - this lens on Nikon D80 does not focus on focal lengths from 28 to 35 mm. The rest of the range, from 35 to 85 mm, is focused. Is it something with the lens or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your feedback.

  • Dmitriev

Hello. I have a nikon AF 35-80 mkII (I will not continue), should I change it to 28-85 mkI (II) or not. Nikon d50 camera. Thanks.

  • Edward

Used this lens as a standard zoom for crop (D7100), and then to the full frame (D800)
    strong, heavy and almost eternal
the image quality, in my opinion, is better than that of whale crop lenses, which is why it was used as a staff

    I liked the crop
    1) sharp picture on all apertures
    2) lack of screwing
    3) the presence of macro
    4) smart autofocus

    did not like
    1) minimum focusing distance - more than two meters (key minus)
    2) lack of a wide angle
    3) flash adventures

    on ff
the minimum distance and wide angle appeared - but the vignette became noticeable, and the blurring at the edges, especially at open apertures

About the flash - I had to switch automatic flash modes, because the TTL did not always work correctly
I had to take several frames with different flash modes (sometimes TTL worked better, sometimes aperture priority (flash mode))

  • Anatoly

    Arkady!
Thank you for your work! For me, your site with its content is an inexhaustible storehouse of wisdom. All your advice was not in vain for me - both in the part of Soviet optics (I took Helios 81H and ZOOM ARSAT 80-200 for scant money), and in the part of the imported one - Nikon 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor (MKII). The lens from this review is very pleasing - the macro is excellent, the entire focal length range with sufficient light pleases with the picture (both color rendition and sharpness).

  • Consultant

I just can’t understand how a Nikon lens made in Japan can be called a bayonet gag? The author, that there is a fly. Where are you and where is Nikon. Reliable, with an unusual optical design, with a real macro, which is not close in modern lenses. I think here skidded our helmsman at the bend))

    • Arkady Shapoval

I didn’t call him that, a little more carefully, please

  • Bas Veerkamp
