Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat is a good all-round zoom lens for full-frame cameras. We will call it Nikon 24-120 / 4G for short. According to my observations Nikon 24-120 / 4G is the closest replacement for lenses Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical и Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D. The Nikon 24-120 / 4G often comes as a whale lens (i.e. the included lens) for some full-format cameras, such as Nikon D750.

Nikon 24-120 / 4G 'is equipped' with a special psychological function - a gold ring near the front lens, which means it can be attributed to the professional lenses of the NIKON NIKKOR line. Although initially the gold ring was placed only on lenses with ED elements in the optical scheme, then marketers began to draw it on all more or less advanced lenses, even if there are no ED elements in their optical scheme (for example Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4GN) Old lenses with ED elements do not have such a ring. As a result, in this complete confusion, the myth developed that all Nikon gold ring lenses are professional lenses, or at least premium lenses.

I advise you not to pay much attention to the presence of this very golden ring. Personally, I only relate Nikon 24-120 / 4G to professional lenses with a stretch because of the small maximum aperture of F / 4 and the Thai assembly.

I also don't like the fact that finding information on dust and moisture protection for Nikon Nikkor lenses is extremely difficult. For reference: a similar lens from Canon - Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-105mm 1: 4 L IS USM Ultrasonic (only 15 mm shorter) was released 5 years earlier and in its specifications it is clearly indicated about the presence of a durable dust- and moisture-protected design. For details on dust and moisture protection lenses Nikon Nikkor read here.

Visually optical circuits Nikon 24-120 / 4G and Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G are similar to each other, and the lenses began to be released at the same time. Most likely, Nikon simply developed a successful basis for constructing such lenses.

The main differences between Nikon 24-120 / 4G from Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G are: constant maximum relative aperture (F / 4 vs F / 3.5-5.6), wider viewing angle (24 vs 28), lower zoom ratio (5X vs 10.6X), the presence of 'N'-coating, the absence of the' LOCK 'button, Dust and moisture resistant housing and faster focusing on Nikon 24-120 / 4G. In all other respects, the lenses are very similar, therefore this review will strongly resemble a review Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G.

Enlightenment 'N' (Nano Crystal Coat)

Nikon 24-120 / 4G attracts with the letter 'N' on its body. 'N' stands for 'Nano Crystal Coat' - nanocrystalline optical coating. Such enlightenment allows you to cope well with glare and flare, and also creates excellent color reproduction. Most likely, only one of the lenses of this objective has an 'N' coating. It is a pity that Nikon does not indicate the number of lenses in the optical system that have such a coating. For example, in the optical scheme Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical You can see that only one lens has a Nano Crystal Coat. Many users believe that the letter 'N' is put more for marketing.

It's funny, but on different lenses, the words 'Nano Crystal Coat' are written differently. So, on the lens from the review, all the words are written separately - 'Nano Crystal Coat', on Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF Aspherical  all words are written together - 'NanoCrystalCoat'.

Assembly

Nikon 24-120 / 4G is made in Thailand. To the touch it is pleasant and weighty, its weight is 710 grams, Nikon 24-120 / 4G uses large filters of professional diameter of 77 mm. The lens has rubber gasket near the mount of the mount for protection against dust and moisture, the lens itself is not dustproof and waterproof.

The focusing ring is plastic, and the zoom ring is rubberized. Nikon 24-120 / 4G has metal bayonet mount. The retractable lens barrel consists of two sections, to the touch they are quite durable, without any backlash.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood HB-53, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom ring is practically not lost.

For the review, I used the practically new Nikon 24-120 / 4G, in which I did not notice any spontaneous change in the focal length under its own weight (the trunk of the lens does not extend itself).

The Nikon 24-120 / 4G comes with a CL-1218 soft case, and the lens itself is shipped in a small cardboard box with a typical Nikon color scheme.

Diaphragm

Diaphragm the lens consists of 9 rounded petalswhich form a fairly even hole. It's nice that Nikon did not stint on nine petals. Aperture closes to F / 22 over the entire range of focal lengths.

Maximum f / 4 aperture is available over the entire range of focal lengths. F / 4 is exactly 1 stop (2 times) less than F / 2.8. The difference between F / 4 and F / 5.6 is also exactly 1 stop (2 times).

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Stabilizer

The Nikon 24-120 / 4G has a VR stabilizer (actually VR II - second generation), which, according to the instructions, can compensate 3.5 stops by shutter speed (sometimes in brochures and other reviews they usually write 'up to 4 stops'). In values excerpts this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 10-12 times longer than what the lens without a stabilizer requires. Most likely, the lens uses a stabilizer identical to that of Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G.

To turn on / off the stabilizer on the lens there is a button 'VR ON / OFF'. The stabilizer can operate in two modes: 'Normal' and 'Active'.

'Normal' mode designed for most scenes and avoids movement when camera shake. Theoretically, the 'Normal' mode can still track the movement of the camera to create panoramas.

Active Mode most suitable for shooting when the camera can not only shake, but also move in different directions. Most often, it is advised to use this mode when shooting in motion.

The stabilizer itself works well. I was able to take pictures without grease and hard work at 120 mm focal length and 1/30 second.

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Focusing

Nikon 24-120 / 4G focuses quite quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Auto Focus Speed - high. Focusing time from MDF (minimum focusing distance) to infinity and vice versa is comparable to  Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical. On cameras Nikon D80, D700, D750 the lens focuses rather tenaciously and does not release objects from the zone of sharpness.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. The front lens does not rotate while zooming. It is possible to use any filters without problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 45 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 4.5 magnification. Nikon 24-120 / 4G has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale as well as labels for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates 120 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus.

Nikon 24-120 / 4G suffers greatly from the 'Focus Breathing' effect - changing the angle of view while focusing.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode.

The focus ring has a small lag that is felt when the direction of rotation of the focus ring changes. But at the same time, Nikon 24-120 / 4G lacks the unpleasant nuance with the focus ring described in the review Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G.

Compatibility and Features

Nikon 24-120 / 4G is designed primarily for Nikon FX full-length cameras, but no one forbids it from being used on Nikon DX cameras, where it EGF is 36-180 mm. A full-fledged replacement for the Nikon 24-120 / 4G among Nikon DX crop lenses does not yet exist, it can be considered as close as possible to itNikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical и Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E ED VR DX.

Nikon 24-120 / 4G will work without problems on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Native alternatives to Nikon 24-120 / 4G may be:

Perhaps if Nikon 24-120 / 4G could not afford me, I would choose Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

Image quality

Nikon 24-120 / 4G as a whole gives a good picture, has good sharpness at F / 4 in the center of the frame over the entire range of focal lengths. The exception is F / 4 @ 120mm, where the lens could have been sharper. Also, sharpness sags along the edges and corners of the frame. Closing the diaphragm, it is possible to bring sharpness along the edges and corners to normal. Nikon 24-120 / 4G tolerates side and backlight well, with a hood installed it is very difficult to catch a bunny from side light. In the backlight, the number of glare is minimal, perhaps here, however, it exhibits a special nanocrystalline enlightenment of optics. Nikon 24-120 / 4G did not do without chromatic aberration, but everything is within normal limits.

At 24 mm you can see a small distortion the nature of the distortion is homogeneous and it is not particularly difficult to remove using post editing, and modern cameras can automatically correct and distortion и chromatic aberration.

The picture itself from Nikon 24-120 / 4G, as for a 24x zoom, is very, very good. Usually, professional opticians demand some kind of fabulous indicators that go beyond common sense. I will not open America that Nikon 120-4 / XNUMXG will not surprise "terry" users who are used to shooting with super-fixes. At the same time, according to his tasks, he shows a quite suitable result.

My experience

Nikon 24-120 / 4G is probably the best all-rounder with over 3X zoom that I have ever used. Of course, it has drawbacks associated with a drop in sharpness at the edges, a high price and a lot of weight, but this is not a prime lens to be 'razor sharp' throughout the frame, and good technology should cost the corresponding money. In general, I was pleased with the Nikon 24-120 / 4G. But still, as the main all-round lens for most tasks, I would prefer a faster Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF Aspherical or Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D.

A very good lens, its main advantage is its versatility. A real "workhorse", put it on the camera and do not shoot. An irreplaceable thing for travel, it saves space in the case and weight, although it itself weighs a lot. Using with DX format cameras has a number of advantages: firstly, the middle works, where there are less aberrations and better sharpness, and secondly, we get a moderate telephoto lens at the long end (180 mm is a lot).

An ambitious amateur photographer is better to use this lens as a base. For a wide angle, photo shoot or portrait, you can additionally purchase a pair of specialized, preferably fixed-focus, lenses.

As for the gold rim, I do not feel much trepidation. The diameter of the thread under the filter and the build quality speaks more about the professionalism of the product. From this point of view, the Nikon 24-120 / 4G is quite a professional tool. True, a 77 mm thread leads to more expensive accessories.

The function of dust-moisture-protection on modern lenses is performed by a thin rubber ring along the edge of the bayonet mount. There is it on the Nikon 24-120 / 4G, but I personally am not sure of its effectiveness. The main thing is careful handling and care. Judging by how smoothly, quietly and without backlash the moving parts of the lens move during zooming, there are seals on the “trunk” as well, which increases the protection against dust and moisture.

The disadvantages of the Nikon 24-120 / 4G are primarily related to ergonomics. The decent weight of the lens is felt over long periods of time and shifts the center of gravity of the camera great. The focusing ring is narrow and awkward for manual work. The mode switches are small and unreliable, especially the “Normal-Active” switch. It is completely incomprehensible why this lever was made even smaller than the others. By tactile sensations, everything is clear - it is the lowest, easy to remember. In such things, you need not miniature, but reliability.

  • Yana

Arkady, please give advice. Need a telephoto to shoot indoors without a flash on the Nikon D700. I choose from
    - Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f / 4G ED VR SWM IF
    - Nikon ED 80-200mm f / 2.8D AF Nikkor80-200 2.8 old without stub
    - Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor
I took off the 85 on the crop and was happy as an elephant. Now FF 85 is no longer a telephoto camera, you need to buy something else. 120 mm, of course, also does not hit very far, but a wide angle will always come in handy. You write that the sharpness of the 24-120 at the far end at f / 4 is poor and you have to clamp (I look at your examples of the photo in this article) to 4.5. It turns out that 70-300 is not that far from him and left?

    • Yana

Yes, and the question of the artistry of a photo from a lens is also very important. Especially after 85 1.8 :-)

  • Simon

Although in the author's opinion that 24-70 is better ... and I like this lens better from the picture, the dense bold image looks very good ... unlike the 24-70 ... there are emasculated skim pictures there is no beauty in them. Something like that…

  • Ilya

The lens is gorgeous, for me it's just a fairy tale as the main one, the fact that F4 does not see any problems at all and has not yet found cases when shooting a wedding in a lack of light, since there is always a flash. I also took pictures at 24-70 - I like this one more. For aperture, there are already fixes that are sharper and brighter. An ideal choice for both photography and high-quality video shooting.

  • Tetris

Starting the story about the lens with its versatility, I want to finish it with the same theme. Strongly extends the scope of this model is the small minimum focusing distance, only 45 cm, regardless of the zoom position. This allows you to work with close-ups, shoot small parts and objects.

  • Vyacheslav

    Good day to all.
So I decided to insert and here are five cents.
A few years ago before a trip to Bulgaria, the need arose for a universal staff. There was a couple of days to buy and the choice fell on 24-120 / 4. There weren’t much reviews then, tests too. But having 70-200 / 4VR, I thought that it would be 24-120 / 4 no worse. Looking ahead I will say that the expectations were justified, but only partially.
    What I liked:
    - good universal focal lengths;
    - image quality at closed apertures;
    - work with side and back light;
    - fast focusing;
    - the stabilizer fulfills 100%;
    - and perhaps that's all ...
    Did not like:
    - distortion at 24mm (not that big, but somehow unpleasant)
    - uneven sharpness and sharpness in general on open ... only at 5,6-8 sharpness begins to level out;
    - not the most accurate focusing.
In the process of resting 24-120 / 4 was dressed for the carcass only when an angle of 24-30mm was needed. the rest of the time I shot at 70-200 / 4vr and Zeiss fifty dollars.
Upon arrival, it was possible to take Nikon 24-85mm / 3.5-4.5G (which is without a stub) at a very inexpensive price. Comparing 24-120 / 4 and 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G and without hesitation, 24-120 / 4 was quickly sold, which I do not regret a bit.
Nikon 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G has less distortion at a wide angle. Surprisingly more or less uniform field sharpness in the open. That and in general turned out to be sharper both on the open and on the closed diaphragms. Having a smaller size and weight. Not so striking when dressed in a carcass.
Everything written above is my IMHO.
The bottom line is that I can say that: I could not find anything in it that could cost $ 1000. For comparison, I got Nikon 24-85mm / 3.5-4.5G (the one without stub) for 1800 UAH, and being at least no worse than Nikon 24-120 / 4, I still live with me, sharing a place in a case with Nikon 28- 70 / 2,8 and 70-200 / 2,8.

    • Vyacheslav

I did not understand you. I quote:
      - ".. without hesitation 24-120 / 4 was quickly sold .."
      - "Nikon 24-120 / 4 still lives with me"

So you sold it? Because it’s bad? Or does he still live? You have some kind of controversy ...

And in general I want to say. Guys, no one mentions the CONSTANT aperture ratio! Are you on brilliant green or are you filming? For me, for example, this is very important ... I shoot in series. Set the values that you need and spin the zoom as you want! And if 3.5-.4.5 ... It will always be darker and lighter ... Then you will die in Lightroom ...

      • Ivan

It is clear that the person says that he left 24-85 and sold unloved 24-120. Just a comma lost in the sentence.
For you, a constant aperture ratio is essential, for someone - not very much.
I myself live in priority shutter speed and with autoiso, and I have a constant or inconstant aperture on the drum at the zoom, if only it worked decently on the open.

      • Michael

And I am in the priority of the diaphragm and I also do not care for a constant aperture)

  • Ilya

Arkady, tell me: is the inconvenience with the focus ring the same as on 18-105 or is it different? I use it myself 18-105

  • Pokekmon

Has anyone had the opportunity to compare this glass with the Sigma 24-105 / 4 ART?
What is better for old FF Nikon (D700)?

  • Vadim berezin

Sigma 24-105 is highly praised at the Nikon club. But landscape painters. If you shoot reports, such as weddings - then nafik. Oh, how wonderful optically 18-35 / 1.8, but only to remove current with it during the day, with bulbs it does not focus and that's it. So far, sigma zooms are a lottery. And for the d700, it makes sense to look for the sharpness of the sigma 24-105 / 4. It still makes sense for 810, but not for 700k. On the subject, I will say that the lens is very successful, especially af, 24-70 zadolbal with elosinium, and 24-120 almost always on target in both tracking and disposable (d600,610,7100). At 810, it looks sharper than at 24ff, despite the scarecrows about the small pixel, which surprised.

  • Abacom

Does anyone have any information about the parfocality of this lens (24-120 / 4)?
This is when the focus point does not change when zooming. Very important when shooting DSLR movies.
    24-70, for example, parfocal, and
    18-200-no. those. varifocal
If anyone filmed, practically share the information.
    Thank you.

    • Leo Zilber

Hello! Your question has been answered whether the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm F4.0 G IF-ED VR is parfocal or not. I shoot video with Nikon D750 camera, and I am looking for a zoom lens with constant focus, since I have to shoot in manual mode ... I would be grateful for your answer! Best regards, Leo

  • Alexey

I also want to buy this glass, instead of 28-70 2.8D, or in addition ... I don't even know. But I look closely. There was no opportunity to try it myself, so there are some doubts. Of course, I'm used to my own brick, but there is not enough stabilizer and the focal point is slightly less than that of the 24-120.

Good day. Arkady, tell me: in terms of picture quality, Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat and old Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 4.0 for portraits? Camera crop (Fujik c3).

  • Stanislas

My 5 kopecks, as a user of this glass with 610 carcass for about 2 years. The gold ring here is: enlightened glass (Nano Crystal Coat), this is the stabilizer in the lens with normal and active modes, constant F4, this is moisture resistance (in doubt). The main thing for me is a zoom with a constant focus. Yes, compared to hole 2.8, it will be dark. But, in the Nikon FF system, this is the best travelzum, as for me. Closes percent 90 needs. For the soul I use fixes. Shot 2.8 with variables, cool lenses, BUT, weight, final 75 and price !!! As I understand it, Nikon engineers, to some extent, wanted to draw analogies with the top-end Canon white lenses. In general, my conclusion is that glass is definitely a masthead, and it has no analogues. All comparisons with any 3.5-5.6, it’s not from that opera at all. The most successful and balanced lens for: tourist, street photo, for every day.

  • Serge

24-120 / 4 g vr fully justifies its price and a golden ring. Excellent sharpness, fast autofocus, stabilization. More compact than 24-70 2.8, lighter, sharper on F4, despite the narrower aperture allows you to shoot at a much lower ISO

  • Alexander

Good afternoon. I am a happy owner of this lens. But there is a problem, the VR stabilizer loop failed. I disassembled almost everything to zero, bought a new loop. But about three weeks have passed and everything is vaguely inverse to the assembly procedure. Can anyone tell me where you can find, buy a service manual for NIKON 24-120 F4 / I didn’t find the entire Internet, I’m lucky here. To send to the service, this is an extreme option.

  • Alexey

Does anyone know why this lens costs about $ 500 in the CIS, and $ 800-1700 on ebay? It's strange somehow ...

    • Rodion

      I know that.
Because the purchasing power of the population in the CIS is two to three times less.
It's no secret that goods are sold on Ebay much more expensive than the same ones on Avito. With rare exceptions.

      • Alexey

        Reasonably, thanks!

  • Sergei

Tell me what is better to buy. 24-70 2.8 bu or 24-120 f4 new or 70-200 2.8 vr2 bu. In the presence of fifty fifty and 1.8-24 85.-3 without vr + 4.5 85. It is necessary for weddings and so on.

    • Arkady Shapoval

A good set is obtained from 24-70 and 70-200

      • Sergei

And if you vibrate 1 out of 24-70 70-200 24-120, provided that there are 24-85 and a fifty dollars. Then, how much better is the same 24-70 or 70-200 from 24-120. I want to buy a whale 750 24-120 or body but with bu 24-70 or 70-200

        • Arkady Shapoval

If the question is 24-70 or 70-200, then most likely there is no full understanding of the objectives of the lenses. Personally, I would leave 24-85 and add 70-200 / 2,8 to it

          • Sergei

Thank you. 70-200 bu but in good condition. With what mileage you can take, tell me. As of the appearance, at 4. Lensi is normal.

            • Arkady Shapoval

depending on which model is 70-200 (there are 3 of them), and hardly anyone will say the actual lens mileage.

              • Sergei

                vr2 but not the last

              • Arkady Shapoval

                Can take

            • Valentine

And what is the lens mileage measured: in the captured frames, in the number of rotations of the zoom ring, in the motor hours of the micromotor? You will never learn any of this from the seller. Even if he gets it from you from the packed box. We can only talk about physical deterioration (condition) by external signs, further suitability and correct operation.

  • Linar

Arkady advise you to take SIGMA AF 24-70 mm f / 2.8 IF EX DG HSM or Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

    • Arkady Shapoval

Watching what you need to shoot.
In general, I would prefer 2.8 over VR.

      • Vyacheslav

Arkady, thank you for the review !!!
        Same question))
        24-120/4 или 24-70/2.8
Filming only on vacation: sea, sun.
I used to shoot on FF + 24-70, the picture is super! I did not use the aperture, all the pictures are from 5.6 and already.
But sometimes the FR was not enough ;-))
Will there be a difference in my case in the quality of the picture?
        Thank you!

  • Olga

Please tell me, I have a Nikon d5500 and 24-85 3.5-4.5, I take pictures of children, a dog, sometimes portraits, I do not have enough focus speed and sometimes f.Rasst. Is it worth changing to 24-120, how will it behave on the crop? How will the speed of the focus. and picture?

    • Olga

      Awww. 😵 help me!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Focusing speed, by and large, does not depend on the camera, but depends on the lens. 24-85 by itself is quite fast, 24-120 is not very fast. Rather, work skills are more affected.

On the crop it will be like (24-120) * 1.5. Whether or not it is worth it - no one will tell you in your situation.

      • Olga

        Thanks, understood.

  • Alexander

But do not tell me if he will work with a teleconverter?

    • B. R. P.

With 1,4x it should, with 2x - depending on which camera.

      • Alexander

        Nikon D750 Camera

        • B. R. P.

          Will be. Details: https://radojuva.com/2012/12/nikon-multicam-all/
In general, compatibility with converters should be indicated in the camera manual.

          • Arkady Shapoval

It’s more about the lens. The instructions for the lens indicate which converters it is recommended to use the lens.

  • Serg

Good afternoon! I decided to buy this lens, they sell a lot in white boxes, sellers call it “raskitovka”, the price is lower than in the branded packaging, a guarantee from the seller - did anyone buy it in this version, how much can you trust a lens in white packaging?

    • Linar

Hello! I had a chance to buy a widespread 24-120 F4 lens. I think this is a reasonable and acceptable option for someone who is financially constrained, so it is cheaper. I do not almost regret the purchase, I am even very satisfied, the lens is universal, quick focusing, which is what I first of all needed in such glass. I am the owner of the Nikon D610, this unit perfectly reveals all the possibilities of the 24-120 F4, and the F4 aperture does not spoil the impression of the lens at all. “Darkness” is compensated by good stabilization and a longer focal length. At the long end, it is quite possible to photograph portraits with relatively beautiful bokeh and switch to landscapes without changing the lens. Glass imperfections can be easily corrected in lightroom or camera. I tested the Tamron 24-70 F2.8, I did not like the autofocus, which is always scouring before precisely focusing, in general, the autofocus seemed to me not confident. Tamron wins in sharpness, but even the 24-120 F4 does not wash terribly, you can add sharpness even after. For me, first of all, the autofocus speed was important, this circumstance pushed me to buy this glass.

      • Serg

Thanks for the detailed answer! I already took a chance and took it in a white package, and the seller gave the opportunity to choose from several, I hope that no breakdowns will happen to him. For me, the most difficult thing was to determine the technical condition of a particular specimen, for example, one of the lenses was unable to focus on a solid-colored corrugated wall, the other did it instantly. Their distortion is clearly pronounced, on the open one there is vignetting - it is believed that this is a feature of this model. By the way, it would be very cool if this review provided examples of a photo of a test chart for checking sharpness (it hangs in normal stores, you can test it when buying a lens) - then you could compare with your tests and this would greatly help with assessing the state ... I took it as a universal travel vehicle.

  • Julia

Tell me, please: I choose between Tamron AF SP 24-70mm f / 2.8 DI VC USD G2. And Nikon 24-120mm f / 4G ED VR AF-S. Carcass Nikon 610. The price difference is significant, Tamron is much more expensive. Does it make sense to overpay? I found a bunch of information on the Internet, but I really can’t decide. Thank you in advance)))

    • Peter Sh.

24-70mm f / 2.8 lenses are those that are taken when they know exactly why it will be needed. Otherwise, pay a lot of money for nothing.

    • Good M

Not a single Tamron has yet reached those heights to be directly compared with the types from Nikon or Canon. Generally not a topic even for discussion. When reselling tamra, you will encounter another funny problem - nobody needs it NAFIG. Conclusions?)

      • Good M

... we read not with “types” but with “tops”.))) Fucking adaptation from overseas

      • anonym

Tamron 24-70 / 2,8vc is very good. I do not think that in the picture distinguish from the top Nikkor

      • Vitaly

Tamron 24-70 VC is doing Nikon 24-70. I say for sure, I myself am the owner of a tamron. Before buying, I compared their foreheads with each other. I chose a tamron. Another nice addition is the stub. Nice thing.

  • Arkady

Hello! help, your advice is really needed, is it worth buying this lens on a crop (Nikon d5300)? you need picture quality and naturally focal, 18-200 is not needed, 300 all the more, but this one would be just right !! I love zooms))

    • Arkady Shapoval

Better for D5300 take Nikon 16-80 / 2.8-4will be more convenient.

      • Arkady

Thanks for the answer and advice, but there is already 17-50 sigma, it suits me all, but I want something a little more in terms of focal lengths, the viewing angle is not so important.

      • Alexander

I also can not decide on this lens. Not so long ago I acquired the D7200, before that I shot on the D3000 18-105 VR from the moment it appeared. In the arsenal there is still a fix 35mm 1,8 and the aforementioned Sigma 17-50 2,8. On a new carcass, the 18-105 lens does not pull out the picture at all, I want more sharpness. With other lenses, the effect is positive. Does it make sense to buy Nikon 24-120 or maybe something else to see in this price category?

        • anonym

Alexander! On your camera! And this is a crop factor of 1,5, this glass 24-120 will become the equivalent of 36-180! Think! Will there be convenient focal ones !? I think to look towards the lenses specifically for DX cameras! That is, such as your camera!

          • Valery A.

What is the point of showing the equivalent of focal (read viewing angles) on the ff camera, which will be visible on the crop camera with this lens? As if a person was shooting his whole life on FF, now he switched to crop and can not imagine 24mm on crop.

            • Valery A.

24mm is really narrow on the crop, general plans, especially indoors, are difficult to cover - you can still reverse on the street, but there is nowhere to go indoors. So it will not be a universal lens on a crop. But Alexander has a sigma of 17-50. Is it indoors, and 24-120 - on the street (and "for growth")?

              • anonym

And I would take 24-120 than to sort out DX lenses. The lens is good, focal as you say it, the most necessary, and the prospect for the future full frame. A wide angle is not so important, it can be a separate width over time. I would have Nikon decent for a full frame 35-150 (180), I would have taken it, since these focal lenses are always crushed into two lenses, here to drag more.

              • Alexander

Indoors I almost always shoot with the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 - no options here! I noticed that most of the shots were taken at maximum focal length, and this is not surprising, because indoors you shoot mostly people, but in this situation, a wide angle is not needed at all. Sometimes I use 35mm f1.8 for a change. Shooting architecture and landscapes is another matter. That's where the sadness is on the crop with this glass (24-120mm f4). But I still dream of buying a wide-angle Tokinu 11-20mm f2,8 and taking two cameras on trips: on the D3000 + a wide angle (fortunately, it's quite compact and not so hard), and on the D7200 a universal 24-120mm f4. Thus, almost all the necessary focal lengths with a good picture at the output are closed. I can't go to full frame yet - it's completely different money, of which there is not much.

  • Vladimir

Arkady hello. I need your help. There are two lenses, this one and the Tokina AT-X AF PRО 28-80mm f / 2.8 (model 280), please advise which one is preferable on the Nikon d700?

    • Alexey

24-120. There is nothing better than native optics. Given that Tokin is an earlier release

      • Pokemon

It is necessary to compare live.
Tokina is also a good lens, if you're lucky with a copy.
        Nikkor is good at having a stub. Tokins have 28-70 / 2.8 and 28-80 / 2.8 non-working 2.8.
