Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat is a good all-round zoom lens for full-frame cameras. We will call it Nikon 24-120 / 4G for short. According to my observations Nikon 24-120 / 4G is the closest replacement for lenses Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical и Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D. The Nikon 24-120 / 4G often comes as a whale lens (i.e. the included lens) for some full-format cameras, such as Nikon D750.

Nikon 24-120 / 4G 'is equipped' with a special psychological function - a gold ring near the front lens, which means it can be attributed to the professional lenses of the NIKON NIKKOR line. Although initially the gold ring was placed only on lenses with ED elements in the optical scheme, then marketers began to draw it on all more or less advanced lenses, even if there are no ED elements in their optical scheme (for example Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4GN) Old lenses with ED elements do not have such a ring. As a result, in this complete confusion, the myth developed that all Nikon gold ring lenses are professional lenses, or at least premium lenses.

I advise you not to pay much attention to the presence of this very golden ring. Personally, I only relate Nikon 24-120 / 4G to professional lenses with a stretch because of the small maximum aperture of F / 4 and the Thai assembly.

I also don't like the fact that finding information on dust and moisture protection for Nikon Nikkor lenses is extremely difficult. For reference: a similar lens from Canon - Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-105mm 1: 4 L IS USM Ultrasonic (only 15 mm shorter) was released 5 years earlier and in its specifications it is clearly indicated about the presence of a durable dust- and moisture-protected design. For details on dust and moisture protection lenses Nikon Nikkor read here.

Visually optical circuits Nikon 24-120 / 4G and Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G are similar to each other, and the lenses began to be released at the same time. Most likely, Nikon simply developed a successful basis for constructing such lenses.

The main differences between Nikon 24-120 / 4G from Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G are: constant maximum relative aperture (F / 4 vs F / 3.5-5.6), wider viewing angle (24 vs 28), lower zoom ratio (5X vs 10.6X), the presence of 'N'-coating, the absence of the' LOCK 'button, Dust and moisture resistant housing and faster focusing on Nikon 24-120 / 4G. In all other respects, the lenses are very similar, therefore this review will strongly resemble a review Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G.

Enlightenment 'N' (Nano Crystal Coat)

Nikon 24-120 / 4G attracts with the letter 'N' on its body. 'N' stands for 'Nano Crystal Coat' - nanocrystalline optical coating. Such enlightenment allows you to cope well with glare and flare, and also creates excellent color reproduction. Most likely, only one of the lenses of this objective has an 'N' coating. It is a pity that Nikon does not indicate the number of lenses in the optical system that have such a coating. For example, in the optical scheme Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical You can see that only one lens has a Nano Crystal Coat. Many users believe that the letter 'N' is put more for marketing.

It's funny, but on different lenses, the words 'Nano Crystal Coat' are written differently. So, on the lens from the review, all the words are written separately - 'Nano Crystal Coat', on Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF Aspherical  all words are written together - 'NanoCrystalCoat'.

Assembly

Nikon 24-120 / 4G is made in Thailand. To the touch it is pleasant and weighty, its weight is 710 grams, Nikon 24-120 / 4G uses large filters of professional diameter of 77 mm. The lens has rubber gasket near the mount of the mount for protection against dust and moisture, the lens itself is not dustproof and waterproof.

The focusing ring is plastic, and the zoom ring is rubberized. Nikon 24-120 / 4G has metal bayonet mount. The retractable lens barrel consists of two sections, to the touch they are quite durable, without any backlash.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood HB-53, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom ring is practically not lost.

For the review, I used the practically new Nikon 24-120 / 4G, in which I did not notice any spontaneous change in the focal length under its own weight (the trunk of the lens does not extend itself).

The Nikon 24-120 / 4G comes with a CL-1218 soft case, and the lens itself is shipped in a small cardboard box with a typical Nikon color scheme.

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Diaphragm

Diaphragm the lens consists of 9 rounded petalswhich form a fairly even hole. It's nice that Nikon did not stint on nine petals. Aperture closes to F / 22 over the entire range of focal lengths.

Maximum f / 4 aperture is available over the entire range of focal lengths. F / 4 is exactly 1 stop (2 times) less than F / 2.8. The difference between F / 4 and F / 5.6 is also exactly 1 stop (2 times).

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Stabilizer

The Nikon 24-120 / 4G has a VR stabilizer (actually VR II - second generation), which, according to the instructions, can compensate 3.5 stops by shutter speed (sometimes in brochures and other reviews they usually write 'up to 4 stops'). In values excerpts this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 10-12 times longer than what the lens without a stabilizer requires. Most likely, the lens uses a stabilizer identical to that of Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G.

To turn on / off the stabilizer on the lens there is a button 'VR ON / OFF'. The stabilizer can operate in two modes: 'Normal' and 'Active'.

'Normal' mode designed for most scenes and avoids movement when camera shake. Theoretically, the 'Normal' mode can still track the movement of the camera to create panoramas.

Active Mode most suitable for shooting when the camera can not only shake, but also move in different directions. Most often, it is advised to use this mode when shooting in motion.

The stabilizer itself works well. I was able to take pictures without grease and hard work at 120 mm focal length and 1/30 second.

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Nano Crystal Coat

Focusing

Nikon 24-120 / 4G focuses quite quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Auto Focus Speed - high. Focusing time from MDF (minimum focusing distance) to infinity and vice versa is comparable to  Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical. On cameras Nikon D80, D700, D750 the lens focuses rather tenaciously and does not release objects from the zone of sharpness.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. The front lens does not rotate while zooming. It is possible to use any filters without problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 45 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 4.5 magnification. Nikon 24-120 / 4G has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale as well as labels for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates 120 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus.

Nikon 24-120 / 4G suffers greatly from the 'Focus Breathing' effect - changing the angle of view while focusing.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode.

The focus ring has a small lag that is felt when the direction of rotation of the focus ring changes. But at the same time, Nikon 24-120 / 4G lacks the unpleasant nuance with the focus ring described in the review Nikon 28-300 / 3.5-5.6G.

Compatibility and Features

Nikon 24-120 / 4G is designed primarily for Nikon FX full-length cameras, but no one forbids it from being used on Nikon DX cameras, where it EGF is 36-180 mm. A full-fledged replacement for the Nikon 24-120 / 4G among Nikon DX crop lenses does not yet exist, it can be considered as close as possible to itNikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical и Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E ED VR DX.

Nikon 24-120 / 4G will work without problems on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Native alternatives to Nikon 24-120 / 4G may be:

Perhaps if Nikon 24-120 / 4G could not afford me, I would choose Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

Image quality

Nikon 24-120 / 4G as a whole gives a good picture, has good sharpness at F / 4 in the center of the frame over the entire range of focal lengths. The exception is F / 4 @ 120mm, where the lens could have been sharper. Also, sharpness sags along the edges and corners of the frame. Closing the diaphragm, it is possible to bring sharpness along the edges and corners to normal. Nikon 24-120 / 4G tolerates side and backlight well, with a hood installed it is very difficult to catch a bunny from side light. In the backlight, the number of glare is minimal, perhaps here, however, it exhibits a special nanocrystalline enlightenment of optics. Nikon 24-120 / 4G did not do without chromatic aberration, but everything is within normal limits.

At 24 mm you can see a small distortion the nature of the distortion is homogeneous and it is not particularly difficult to remove using post editing, and modern cameras can automatically correct and distortion и chromatic aberration.

The picture itself from Nikon 24-120 / 4G, as for a 24x zoom, is very, very good. Usually, professional opticians demand some kind of fabulous indicators that go beyond common sense. I will not open America that Nikon 120-4 / XNUMXG will not surprise "terry" users who are used to shooting with super-fixes. At the same time, according to his tasks, he shows a quite suitable result.

My experience

Nikon 24-120 / 4G is probably the best all-rounder with over 3X zoom that I have ever used. Of course, it has drawbacks associated with a drop in sharpness at the edges, a high price and a lot of weight, but this is not a prime lens to be 'razor sharp' throughout the frame, and good technology should cost the corresponding money. In general, I was pleased with the Nikon 24-120 / 4G. But still, as the main all-round lens for most tasks, I would prefer a faster Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF Aspherical or Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D.

    Great lens!

    • anonym

Yah! Heavy, dark, picture is not important! It is clear that 28-300 is better ... If you take the zoom, then 24-70 / 2.8. It will not be so offensive. Better to buy a couple of fixes: 50 + 85. Though the pictures will be normal, and not stupidly "reportage".

      • anonym

Yeah, of course, its price is 31k, and 24-70 is almost 80k, this is from the category: oh well, this matis, I'd better take a mustang. You compare the price and the purpose of the lens.

      • Ali

24 - 70 is a purely reportage camera without any claims to high artistry. Bokeh is good, but nothing more. The picture is not impressive in terms of expressiveness and plasticity. I have extensive experience in pairing with 24 - 70 2.8 on D300S, D600, D700. And I shoot to this day. When I shot portraits, I used steel 85: 1.4 or sigma 50: 1.4. For example Tamron is not AF 17-50 2.8, in my opinion it gave a picture a little more flexible than 24-70.

    • anonym

... just don't fill in about different photo tasks! If desired, the entire wedding can be rented for fifty dollars! And the pictures will be much better! With bokeh and sharpness!

      • Andrei

all the advantages of a fifty dollars end on the size and price, and on the crop it is completely useless.

        • anonym

... we don't care about bokeh and sharpness! ... we just have to stand in the corner! ... or does size matter?

          • Andrei

To begin with, the wide angle matters.
zoom also matters unless of course in the studio, because legs do not always have the opportunity to approach.
Modern zooms are not inferior in sharpness. A conditional pair of 12-28 and 50-135 from the tokens on the crop can solve almost all problems.
Boke so it’s generally not for everybody. Where is the border of bad and good boke?
What percentage of people pay attention to him when looking at photos?

And if you really want a fix, then 30 and 85 will be more interesting than 50 for both crop and full frame. Reklama 50 is the marketing ploy of manufacturers. It is small and cheap and is great as a spare lens. Then it turns out that it is too narrow or wide and the consumer begins to look for another lens. Buying a third, fourth lens is psychologically easier than the second.

The task of any manufacturer to make the buyer buy more and more.

            • Vladimir

These are the words that I was looking for fifty dollars. Truly true.

              • Alexander

                Not true.

              • Vladimir

When the fix was 50 mm, it was always narrow and wide for me, but after buying the Tokina 28-80, everything settled down, after analyzing the pictures I had most of the frames in the range of 28-32 and 65-75; 45-55 almost never met. This is an analysis from the D700 and D90, although the D90 still lacks a wide angle. This is my case, other people with a camera can have everything differently. All good health and boring pictures.

            • Peter Sh.

I use fifty kopecks constantly. It is clear that in the FF.
Due to the nature of human visual perception, 50mm is close to how we look at the world around us.
It seems to me that it’s good to shoot architecture at fifty dollars, especially at night. I also shoot children at him on any birthday, with medals after the competition, etc.

              • Sergei

I don’t know how others look at the world, but the 50 mm focal length for me corresponds to the field of view for one eye, but I usually look with two, and this is already a 35 mm lens.

            • Peter Sh.

In some foreshortenings during night shooting, you can’t do without a fast fifty dollars. A wide lens will capture a lot of unnecessary asphalt underfoot, can spoil the frame with all sorts of distortions, and will not be able to work out the details enough.
              D610, Nikkor 50mm f / 1.4D, handheld shooting, JPEG from camera:

            • Alexander

They have been photographing fifty dollars for more than 100 years. What kind of marketing are you talking about? Do not carry scumbags (to say the least).

              • Andrei

So seventy years out of a hundred lenses were manual and film cameras. Why did you switch to digital and autofocus? Why don’t you use the wonderful technologies that have proven themselves over the years?
If the ancient photographer were offered 50-24 instead of 80, he would not refuse.

Or there were no marketers 100 years ago? So there were merchants who also artificially created demand. Man is an animal, and any of his actions is aimed at the production of meat (money).

              • Victor

Alexander, do not argue with your interlocutor. Of course, you are right when you say that fifty dollars have been removed for more than 100 years. But, after all, you never know what the interlocutor has in his head - FX bkb DX ???

It's like a snail joke. The Estonian on the porch of the house picked up a snail, twisted it in his hand and threw it into the bushes. A year later I saw a snail on the porch again. He picked it up, said "saipala" and threw it into the bushes. :)

            • Arseny

              Fifty is delicious.
It can act as a kosher reporter 35mm f1.4 and a genre portrait, and if the pixelity of your FF allows, then by replacing 85ki.
In addition to point one, I will say that it is much easier to shoot with it than for 35ms, because “contact” with the subject is still maintained, but a bunch of garbage cans and so on do not climb on the sides.
Summing up, I have changed 7 fifty dollars to one 35ku and two 85ki.
All this in the presence of bright zooms.

      • Vovchan

Yes, in a cramped 50-k apartment, you’ll shoot everything :)))

And only when I came across my own post did I notice that everything was written by “experts” who had not seen the camera six months ago.
I hope I don’t have to throw out the 750 for the reason that Arkady’s reviews will be consonant with the one described in the “preliminary review”))

Please tell me, but alternative lenses, in what parameters are the alternatives?

    • Lynx

      on average.

  • lesa

28-105 3.5-4.5 in general, not a little worse, both vacuum cleaners. Of the advantages, only VR is perhaps a little more convenient focus. But the price difference.

    • Alexander

Do you determine the optical qualities by the presence of a “pileos” in the optical scheme? Despite the fact that it is not at all critical and not dangerous (as practice shows).

      • lesa

Did I write about this? What a habit to express a crazy idea and stick it to another.
Optically, 28-105 is not bad and 24-120, in turn, does not hit with a picture like 80-200.
In both lenses, the main disadvantage for me is the vacuum cleaner. The aperture is about the same.
Zoom needed for what? Run along the streets, through the forest through the fields and mountains, through construction sites and ruins. And there, the dust sucks perfectly and the conditions for cleaning are not very good.
Because I sold and 28-105 and did not take 24-120.

        • Alexander

Yes, that’s what you wrote. In this situation, it was you who wrote the crazy idea. Learn to speak correctly, then there will be no misunderstandings.

          • lesa

            Learn to read.
            > 28-105 3.5-4.5 in general, not a little worse, both vacuum cleaners.

            > Do you determine the optical qualities by the presence of a "pileos" in the optical scheme?

Where did I compare the optical properties?
If for you the working qualities of a lens are exclusively optical properties, then you should not think that it is the same for others.
Weight is important for someone, security is for someone .. someone needs af, someone does not need it .. someone chooses exclusively by optical quality.

  • lesa

Here is an example of a vacuum cleaner from practice (:
That was the last straw. Since then there has been no vacuum cleaner and cleanings there were only a couple of pieces and then 1-2 dust particles.

  • Victoria

I have owned this lens for over two years. The lens is a working one, I rarely change it to 70-200 2,8. The image quality is excellent, no dust appeared during the operation, although they call it “vacuum cleaner”. Sharpness pleases from aperture of 4,5. I recommend it to everyone if it is not enough for a high-aperture level

    • Grandfather

I’ve also been shooting this glass for the third year, I’m practically not removing it from the FF camera, the picture is for zoom, beyond praise, 120mm F / 4 is an excellent soft portrait, as for me it’s even harsh, the stub is generally super, I took pictures with my hands at night with exposure 1 sec.

Is this a good example in your opinion?) A lot of noise and nothing is visible

I look at the photo and think whether people have some kind of even hands, or I have from jo ... Arkady, a big request to you as a beginner who wants to join manual optics. Write an article for us green on how to choose the right ISO, shutter speed, aperture so that such beautiful photos come out like yours. Thanks in advance. I think this article will be of interest to many

  • Lynx

    Good reporter.

  • varezhkin

excellent current review. Kamjipeg 750s also pleases.

  • atypical Kiev

I have been using this lens for six months and I want to say that the device is not bad, and given that it came with the 750 almost for nothing, it’s simply beautiful.
Sorry, but almost everything in this world is determined by the price / quality ratio.
A couple of years ago I saw it on sale for a piece of bucks and for the kind of money I would never buy it, but then its price was about 200 cu and it made sense to take.
Of course, this is not 28-70 2.8, but as a wagon I really like the convenience of the focal points (wide angle, 120 mm at the long end), very good aperture, a huge plus - a perfectly working stub!
Of the minuses that I noticed, it sometimes misses the focus. This "sometimes" fell out for me at the most inopportune moment and left an unpleasant aftertaste in my soul.
Although it may not be in the lens, but in the curvature of the mobile gasket between the ground and the camera, because Arkady’s pictures are a sight for sore eyes.
Yes, also keep in mind that there is a type of "professional" 77mm, and, accordingly, the most expensive filters. And by the way, I read that when putting on a polarizing filter, corners can be shaded at 24-28 mm focal length! I myself have not yet got hold of a polaric, if anyone can confirm or deny - I will be grateful.

    • Grandfather

Polaric 77mm does create darkening at 24-26mm angles. at 28mm, everything is fine, this effect is present in all SHU lenses, since the filters are flat and not convex and do not cover the entire working area of the first lens - the laws of optics.
Everything is fine with focusing on this glass, the reason is in the camera model, focus sensors, on the D700, D4 there are no such problems, it has been verified.

  • Yarkiya

Well, what, clean, sharp picture, what else is needed. And yes, nano coverage is not a marketing ploy, because it was originally designed for projectors. And it does nothing supernatural, just fewer reflections and, as a result, the absence of large rabbits.

  • anonym

Oh, what a garnish girl in an embroidered shirt .. Just honey!) It would be nice to add examples from crop to the review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Turn on the photo, fold your arms like this and observe the cropped image. Business then :)

      • Yarkiya

This is just full, for crop you need to move your hands a little bit. :)

  • Dezdecado

Well, what is needed, but the price is sad.

  • Vitaly

I spent a very long time choosing a universal zoom for a full frame. I went through all the native options: 24-70 / 2.8, 24-120 / 4, 28-300 / 3.5-5.6. I liked the 28-300 very much, but it is very heavy for travel and the zoom ring turns tightly. The native 24-70 is even tighter, and there is no stub (a huge minus). I decided to take 24-120 / 4, also “but”, only even more, namely - terrible geometric distortions at a wide angle, very similar to cropped 16-85 - leaves no mercy to those who fall into the edge or corner of the frame - geometric distortion terrifying, just darkness, horror, etc., as in a room of crooked mirrors, it looks disgusting, and post-processing is not cured. Even the 28-300 has, in comparison with it (24-120), the ideal geometry at the same focal points. It was already decided to take a screwdriver 24-85 / 2.8-4, also "but" - there is no stub. I really appreciate the stub. But 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR is just super - small, not much darker than 24-120 / 4 (is this the difference: 4 and 4.5?), With geometric distortions everything is in order (this is after 24-120 / 4), there is a stabilizer, lightweight, perfect for travel just right. Colors are on the level. What else does? Unless I would like not 24-85, but 28-160 with the same characteristics, but these are dreams. And so, excellent lens, I advise you to take it. Anyone who switches from crop to full frame will not notice the financial problems with the acquisition of this glass after selling their cropped ones.
Now about the “shortcomings” inflated by all the reviewers: 24-85VR vignette is even less than 24-120 / 4 (personal tests are opposite to the official data - I believe my eyes more), and a negligible drop in sharpness to the edge of the frame is not noticeable in real pictures or you really need to look closely at the 1/1 scale. And one more thing: 24-120 / 4 in focusing speed, subjectively, even slower than 24-85VR. That's it.

    • Noa

I support this idea - 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR is a cool lens - lightweight, there is a stub, good focal lengths, quite cheap, a good picture, it's not so bad to ditch))
for a portrait, this is certainly not at least 85 1,8 g, but you should not expect good bokeh

      • Vitaly

By the way, 24-120 / 4 is still not sold, it cost me a lot when buying, so the toad stops me from selling 24-120 / 4 - he gave the money, although he did not bring me joy. And when I tried 24-85VR, then 24-120 / 4 is lying around useless junk on the shelf. Heavy, slow and no better than 24-85VR, although there are a little more focal lengths in the telerange, which, by the way, is almost not felt in real life. 85 versus 120 is not such a big difference. And I set the luminosity of both of them identical, as I said, 4.5 versus 4 - is this the difference?

        • Vitaly

By the way, 24-120 / 4 with my D700 in conjunction turns out even that weight. But with 24-85VR, the bunch turns out almost like D7000 + 18-105, i.e. already bearable and you can run back a day with such a kit. And if you add SB-910, then already the neck falls off in the evening.

    • Andrei

in general there is logic, but ... as it seems to me, as in most cases, the picture quality of a particular instance may vary. I have 24-120 and I will say that I am satisfied with it. of the disadvantages - a loss of sharpness by 120 mm at f4. distortion, but not a catastrophe - it is treated in grafred. of the pluses - tenacious focus, such a thing as yaw is basically absent. I thought that with the advent of this lens Nikon overcame the yaw forever, but ... I was mistaken - I bought 24-70 a month ago, f2,8 E, not even G but E ... and here you are hello - from time to time it will take it and search ... even in in comparison with such a fat glass, 24-120 loses with a greater graininess of the picture in low light and probably there should still be more likely not dips of 24-120 but superiorities of 24-70, but I have not yet fully figured it out. I think 24-70 will show itself better in the solar session. yes, and most importantly the PRICE !!! 62k for 24-70E and 26k for 24-120! (Hryvnia) feel the difference !!! :))

  • Novel

Arkady, I can suggest a “competitor” for testing: Canon EF 24-105 f / 4L USM (if interested)

I will support, Arkady, accept the “competitor” for review :)) We are really looking forward to it!

why is the word competitor in quotation marks?
This is the case when the most COMPETENT is real.
It will be interesting to compare. If they also gave the “third penny”, it would be great!

  • Sirusvirus

Thanks for the time and effort spent, this is an overview of the particular bundle (D750 + 24-120) that was very interesting. Especially RAVs helped to understand a lot.

Great style of reviews, on the Internet there are almost no competitors to you))

  • Dmitriy

.. for fun, I decided to add an example about * a purely stupidly boring reportage picture *. Well, of course, if you shoot at 24mm and hole 16 :))

In another example - a bokeha partially with circles, a similar one is given by half a 1.8D, and also, to some extent, such a wonderful zonnar as Jupiter-8

  • Dmitriy

In general, I am satisfied with the glass. By the way, it is different, from copy to copy. One b / y (very b / y, maybe fell more than once) gave a disgusting picture at the short end and washed after 85mm even on the D700. Another instance, a new one, which I took for myself, shows a slight drop in sharpness by only 50mm, while 120mm gives pixel-by-pixel sharpness, contrary to reviews.
But the meaning of this HYPERZUM, kmk, is to do with one lens in 99% of cases, and when you need efficiency, instant reaction to events, while maintaining a decent image quality (sharp, contrasting, not plastic (= with microcontrast)). The stabilizer allows you to often forget about the tripod: 1/20 by 120mm is easy, I almost never noticed the lubrication. All IMHO, I see))

Hello everybody! I ordered myself from the beginning Tamron 24-70mm F / 2.8 Di VC USD to my d7100, while I was waiting for delivery, I learned from a smart seller in the photo store that it wasn’t the original equipment that was buggy on the D7100 and models released later, supposedly the Nikon commercial move, to take their . He personally shot the D7100 + Tamron 24-70mm F / 2.8 Di VC USD, in general, the camera lifts a mirror, takes a frame and freezes, and it is not clear which frame it will happen at 35m or 1000m. We have to turn the camera off and on again, in short an ambush! It takes another 7100 from the window, the same thing, but on the D7000 everything works, whether the flashing will help or not. I didn’t find any information in nete.
I decided not to risk it - I gave up the tamron and ordered my own Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G, one of the main goals of the top-end lenses, in addition to the aforementioned charms, is to reveal every pixel, 24mgp on crop or 36mgp on ff. And really, the lens turned out to be good - bokeh, sharpness, at first I also thought it was "darkish", but 4ki is enough, sometimes I even cover the diaphragm. to increase the depth of field, that's what you need. Before that, I took off for 2 years on a fixed fifty-kopeck piece, first 1.8G, then 1,4G and thought it was better and not necessary, now 1,4 lies on the shelf, bored, not sharp compared to 24-120, but I hope it back or front focus, hands have not yet reached to check.
Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 4G acquired taking into account the transition to a full frame in the future.
Arkady THANKS MUCH for very useful and disclosed articles, there’s not much similar on the Internet! And I would like to know from Arkady about this incompatibility, the latest Nikon cameras + lenses from other companies, is that so?
I really want a review, as the legendary Canon EF 24-105 f / 4L USM is written, not even a review, but a good paragraph of comparison with Nikon, thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

It's simple - the communication protocols between the lens and the camera are closed. All lenses from third-party manufacturers communicate with the camera "by typing", first of all, this affects the accuracy and tenacity of focusing, work in Live View and a million other features.

      • Gordey

in my liveview with sigma 70-200 2,8 it doesn’t focus at all, although the picture on crop is very nice on ff

Nikon 02.07.2015/16/80 introduced the Nikkor 2.8-4mm FXNUMX-XNUMXE ED VR zoom lens DX format, designed for professional photographers.
Due to the wide range of focal lengths (16–80 mm), the lens allows you to shoot a wide variety of scenes - from landscapes to camera portraits. Fivefold zoom of this model is equivalent to a 24–120 mm lens angle in full-frame format. The large aperture of f / 2,8–4 ensures high quality shooting in low light conditions.
The device has a VR vibration reduction system that minimizes the effect of camera shake and allows you to shoot at shutter speeds four steps slower than usual. At the same time, a silent ultrasonic motor (SWM) provides fast, quiet and accurate autofocus over the entire zoom range, which is an advantage when recording videos.
The lens design includes 17 elements in 13 groups, including four ultra-low dispersion elements (ED glass) and three aspherical lenses. The Nano Crystal Coat Nano-Crystal coating enhances image clarity even in backlighting, eliminating glare and double effect. A protective fluorine-containing coating protects the lens from exposure to water, dust and dirt, without compromising image quality. Thanks to it, lenses are easy to clean without damaging the surface.
The electromagnetic aperture, Nikon claims, provides more accurate and repeatable exposure, especially when shooting at high frame rates.
The Nikkor 16-80mm F2.8-4E ED VR lens specifications are:
    Focal length: 16–80 mm;
    Maximum aperture: f / 2,8–4;
    Minimum aperture: f / 22–32;
    Lens construction: 17 elements in 13 groups (including 4 elements from ED glass, 3 aspherical lenses, as well as elements with a nanocrystalline coating Nano Crystal Coat and one element from a protective glass with a fluorine-containing coating);
    Angle of view: 83–20 °;
    Minimum focusing distance: 0,35 m;
    Number of aperture blades: 7 (rounded);
    Installation filter size: 72 mm;
    Diameter × Length: 80 × 85,5 mm;
    Weight: 480
It will be possible to purchase a new product this month at an estimated price of 1070 US dollars.

Professional crops stopped making, and DX lenses, "designed for professional photographers", began. Interesting approach

      • Arkady Shapoval

And the most interesting thing is that this professional lens is not suitable for professional nikon d1 (h, x), D2 (h, hs, x, xs) and to any cameras released before 2007. The system is falling apart again (.

        • Alexey

          D40 again in flight? :)

          • Lynx

            Magpie always steers!

    • Sergei

Maybe it's just a replacement for 16-85 glass? Also a crop with similar focal lengths, but slightly lighter.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely not a replacement, but an addition, since lenses have different classes.

        • Sergei

I have a feeling that these different classes will differ when shooting about the same as 18-105 and 16-85.
And what other lenses Nikon uses "Electromagnetic diaphragm"? In all the lenses that passed through my hands, the diaphragm was controlled by a lever.

  • Andrei

Prof. There is a lens, now we are waiting for the release of prof. crop :)

    • Andrey Super

But giggled in vain !!! Nikon D500!

  • Andrei

tell me if it makes sense to change the Nikon AF-S
Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF on this lens?

    • Sergei

It depends on which camera. For a crop - I would not take it. Although if your segment 85-120 will be actively used, then it makes sense in such a replacement. But in the case of FF, I think it would still be worth taking.

    • Lynx

If you are going to beat reports, as well as in the future to switch / not switch to FF - then yes ..
in other cases - from tasks.

  • Andrei

I wondered to buy a hood ... HB-53 ... I can't find it on sale. tell pzhl where to buy?
