The Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13 is an ultra wide angle lens for cropped APS-C cameras. This review presents a version for Nikon cameras, but the lens was produced in versions for cameras of other popular systems.

History

The line of super-wide Tamron SP DI II (for cropped SLR cameras, in order of appearance):

  1. Tamron SP DIII 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 AF Aspherical LD [IF] A13, Model A13development announcement 28 September 2004. Became available with Jun 2005. For Nikon F, Canon EF / EFS and Sony / Minolta A. Lenses are built on the same optical circuit Konica Minolta AF DT Zoom 11-18mm 1: 4.5 (22) -5.6 D, which was subsequently converted to Sony 4.5-5.6/11-18 DT (SAL1118). And also Tamron A13 can be found under the Promaster brand in the form of promaster Digital EDO AF Aspherical LD (IF) 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6.
  2. Tamron SP DIII 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 B001, Model B001announcement October 23 2008 (originally there was an option only for Nikon F), with 3 March 2009 for Canon EF, with 12 2009 June for Sony A and Pentax K. Produced in Japan, China and Vietnam.
  3. Tamron DIII 10-24mm F / 3.5-4.5 VC HLD B023, Model B023, announcement February 7 2017. Only for Nikon F and Canon EF / EFS.

Tamron was the first company back in 2008 to be able to make an over-wide with such a large range of focal lengths. Up to this point, super-widths of 10-24 mm did not exist. Later, in April 2009, Nikon caught up with her Nikon 10-24 / 3.5-4.5G. However, it is worth noting that already in November 2004, Canon had a very similar one, only 2 mm shorter, Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 USM.

Assembly

Surprisingly, the Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13 turned out to be a fairly light lens for its class. The Tamron A13 weighs only 355 grams. At the same time, a similar lens - Canon EF-S LENS 10-22mm 1: 3.5-4.5 USM weighs just a little bit more. Due to its light weight, the Tamron A13's case does not seem strong enough to the touch.

The zoom and focus ring is rubberized. The lens uses large standard filters with a diameter of 77 mm. Included with the lens is a plastic lens hood Tamron DA13 Japan, which is fixed to the lens barrel with special grooves. In transport mode, the lens hood does not block access to the focus ring.

When changing the focal length, the lens barrel moves forward by half a centimeter, while the rear lens also moves in the middle of the lens barrel. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate around its axis. There are marks on the zoom ring for 11, 13, 15, and 18 mm focal lengths.

The designations in the lens name are deciphered as follows:

  • aspherical - the presence of aspherical elements in the optical circuit of the lens
  • LD (Low Dispersion) - indicates the presence of special low dispersion elements.
  • Di ii - the lens is only suitable for cropped cameras with an APS-C sensor, use on full-format cameras is not recommended
  • SP ('Super Performance '-' Super Performance ') is Tamron's professional line of lenses. These lenses typically have higher build and image quality values.
  • AF - the presence of auto focus
  • [IF] ('Iinternal Focusing ') - internal focusing.
  • A13 - lens model
  • 11-18 mm - focal length range
  • 1: 4.5-5.6 - maximum relative aperture for extreme values of focal length

The optical scheme of the lens consists of 15 elements in 12 groups, of which 1 LD (Low Dispersion), 1 HID (High Dispersion) and 3 aspherical elements.

Focusing

Auto focus speed for Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13 for Nikon cameras very low. At the same time, for example, the same model for Canon cameras has much faster automatic focusing. During focusing, in the version for Nikon cameras, the lens makes a lot of noise, since it does not have a built-in focusing motor, which is why focusing is performed by a motor built into the camera body. Focus speed does not depend on the set focal length. During auto focus, the focus ring rotates and cannot be touched.

The focus ring rotates only 90 degrees, there are marks on the focus distance in meters and feet. Lens uses internal focus - when focusing, neither the front nor the rear lens rotates, and the lens itself does not change its size when focusing.

The minimum focusing distance is only 25 cm, but the maximum zoom ratio of 18 mm focal length is only 1: 8. I would very much like the minimum focusing distance to be even a little less.

Diaphragm

The diaphragm consists of seven blades and closes to F / 22 @ 11mm, F / 29 @ 18mm. The lens cannot boast good performance of maximum relative aperture. Maximum geometric aperture available at 11 mm focal length and is only F / 4.5.

Compatibility and Version Features for Nikon Cameras

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

The prefix 'DI II' in the lens name means that Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13 is designed to work with cropped cameras. Nikon DX. EGF lens for Nikon DX cameras is 16.5-27mm.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount.

Nikon has no complete counterpart for the Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13. The most similar to him can be considered Nikon AF-S Nikkor 10-24mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical.

Image quality

Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13 holds well in side and back light, only occasionally you can catch a plentiful amount of glare. Serious vignetting is present at only 11 mm of the focal length. Of course, there is nowhere to go without a little distortion, however, the image geometry is quite suitable. The serious shortcomings of the instance that I had on the test can be considered strong chromatic aberration, especially at the edges and corners of the frame, as well as mediocre sharpness. The sharpness does not get good enough even with serious aperture, maybe this is a feature of my specimen.

Although the lens is designed for use on cropped cameras, Tamron A13 can be used on full-format cameras in the range of 15-18 mm without major vignetting.

You can download RAW source files at this link (46 files in the .'NEF 'format, 419 MB). All photos were taken using a CITIWIDE CPL 77mm polarizing filter. The filter adds extra glare when working against the sun. The filter does not increase vignetting. The photos were taken in the Mezhdurechensk regional landscape park.

My experience

Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13, which I visited in my review, turned out to be rather weak in terms of resolution, and even this terribly slow focus did not leave a good impression. In addition, the lens quite often missed during focus when used on the camera Nikon D80. Perhaps the spread of quality is to blame. On the network you can find information that comes across instances that create a very sharp picture.

It has the poorest zoom ratio in its class of lenses, only 1.64 X, almost the same as that of a fast 'almost fix' Tokina AT-X 116 PRO SD 11-16mm F2.8 (IF) DX II. Yes, and aperture Tamron A13 is noticeably lower than that of the `` native '' Nikon 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5G or Nikon 12-24mm f / 4G. Tamron is even a little darker than Sigma EX 10-20mm 1: 4-5.6 DC HSM... Tamron A13, first of all, is interesting for its relatively low cost and low weight, personally it did not burden me at all during one of hiking.

If I chose a similar wide-angle for a cropped camera, I would definitely stop at Tokina 128 AT-X Pro SD 12-28 F4 (IF) DX Aspherical or Tokina AT-X PRO SD 12-24 F4 (IF) DX II Aspherical or Tokina AT-X PRO SD 11-20 F2.8 (IF) DX. Well, if you need the widest, widest zoom lens for cropped cameras, then Sigma EX DC 8-16mm 1: 4.5-5.6 HSM in this regard, the record holder. At the same time, other systems have their own good 'extra wide' crop options.

I have one for Canon. Autofocus is fast, but very often it makes mistakes, and I never use it, since it is almost unnecessary at super-width - the depth of field is very wide, since I set it to hyperfocal and that's it. Yes, not the sharpest lens, but considering the cost, it is quite a suitable option. And yes, very light indeed.

  • Vladimir

I understand that this company does not differ in quality stability and there is a noticeable spread between copies. Nevertheless, I am really looking forward to reviewing Tamron 10-24 from you. I have it in operation for three years. I am very pleased with my copy and I am not the only one who can give a positive review about it. Here is a good tip too: http://www.alphatraveller.org/archives/10
I'd love to hear your opinion on this matter. Personally, I can’t send you my copy for the test, because I am in Russia. But I think in Ukraine it’s real to find him.

    • Photographer

It does not matter that you are in Russia, come to visit Ukraine, at the same time we will do a review :)

      • Dmitriy

A person writes according to the rules of * Russian * language. And he writes correctly. Let’s hit on the Americans, for what they say "Ukraine" instead of the canonical and clear Ukraine?

        • Photographer

According to the spelling rules of the "Russian" language in relation to the administrative names of cities, regions, republics, countries, the preposition "B" is used. Ukraine is the name of the country and if you live or travel it is not to the country and country, but to the country, inside. moreover, also have a good laugh, and everything will be good :). I propose to end this :)

          • Ingvard

So Vladimir does not seem to be going anywhere). He simply assumes that in the vastness of Ukraine it is quite possible to find Tamron 10-24.

          • Nick

Those. I need to write that I live in Cyprus, and not on ..?

            • anonym

On the island of Cyprus, but not on the country of Ukraine.

              • Nick

But I do not want to live on the island of Cyprus, I want to live in the Republic of Cyprus. And then does my aunt live in Crimea or what? (It’s also a peninsula. Or Paul .. is not considered?) And why then do the British live on their island in the UK, and not on?)

            • anonym

Why aren’t you talking in Russia, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong?

          • Vladimir

            About this joke:
            - Mary Ivanna, why should we speak to Ukraine now, and not to Ukraine?
            - Little Johnny, well, we don't speak in deep ass.

            • Photographer

It's a common thing when a “checker” runs out of arguments, he turns to insults, as you are recognizable :) Sorry, Arkady, could not resist commenting on this post.

              • Vladimir

Photographer, want an argument? You are welcome!
Would you be so kind as to remember - how long ago did you see that what was not “on” but “in”?
Well, and, accordingly, by whose order did you “see the light”, if, of course, you understand this?
And I did not insult you. But you have personally spoken to me impartially.
                So alas and ah….

            • Mikola Fedorovich

Why are you in a stranger’s house? Sit and don’t rip !!!

              • Vladimir

                I'm sorry.
Who is crawling into someone else's hut?
Who is starting to teach me the Russian language?
There is such a concept in linguistics as an established speech turnover. So in the Russian language "to Ukraine" is an established speech turnover. On the move, alter what you want (if you don’t know how to do anything else), but I ask you not to touch the Russian language. Do not go into someone else's hut.

              • anonym

If we turn to literature, then we can meet the phrase “in Ukraine” in the works of Pushkin, Chekhov, Gogol. Unfortunately, in Russia over the past 20 years there have been difficulties with education, so you should not be offended by poorly educated people.

          • Alexander

Argumented and on the topic. I agree :)

  • Sergei

Oh, I read your reviews and I understand that everything is changing and everything is changing. We used to write about models, but now about this instance. Previously, they wrote for everyone, but now the impression is that for super professionals with a budget of tens of thousands of green units. “This lens is bad, that is not that” and discourage those who like to buy budget glasses. You should read your old reviews, refresh your memory. I remember before we took everything, all the reviews were interesting, but now “it doesn't interest, there is no time to write about it”. In general, I can read the technical characteristics on the off-site, but I wanted it as before from myself, from the heart. If you are not indifferent to your readers, I advise you to listen to our opinions, especially since I am not the first with such remarks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

When recently there were reviews of Jupiters, Helios, which from the category “took everything”, on the contrary, they screamed that they wanted “autofocus”. When you write about the lens on business, they begin to remember that earlier “helios” were “greener”. You can't please everyone. Or maybe I can look up to Kenny and turn off comments and sample shots? :)

      • Sergei

Kenny is a guru among hamsters. Don't look up to him. If you write for us (your readers), consider all your wishes. If you want to turn off comments and examples of pictures, link to the site ... then you don't care about our opinion.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Well then, let's specifically what is wrong, for example, in this review? In fact, no snot.

          • Sergei

“I have formed an overly biased attitude towards the Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13, caused by the lack of resolution of the specimen from this review.” This, I think, should not be. There are those who cannot afford top-end glass, and after the review it seems that there is no worse glass. But for each product, its own merchant. Where are the pluses of this instance written? Aren't they. It's just that an amateur will be disappointed in this piece of glass after the review, but he won't be able to buy it more expensive. But not everything is as bad as it is written and it is not necessary to strongly compare it with those that cost twice as much. And "after reading, one gets the impression about all the lenses Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13, and not about the specific 'described'."

            • Arkady Shapoval

The pros are described, you just need to carefully read:

interesting for its relatively low cost and low weight

As for this instance, everything is also described:

Perhaps the spread of quality is to blame. On the network you can find information that comes across instances that create a very sharp picture.

And indeed, if this Tamron is bad, then you invite me to sing praises about it? The review is designed for people, at least a little thinking, and not for those who someone described with the word "hamsters".

            • Sergei

PS: I began to notice that you are striving for dry numbers. Ken Rockwell says so, without a soul. I miss the reviews of that Radozhiva.

              • Arkady Shapoval

Now just the general details that are valid for all lenses with similar parameters follow links to articles that describe this in detail. For example, that the lens on younger cameras will not work with autofocus, etc. I see no reason to write general things in every review.
At the same time, as in previous times, there is no specificity in the comments on the review, everyone has something “It seems”, “it used to be”. At the same time, in the review, I give clear recommendations if someone is looking for a specific lens like this. If you do not agree with the review, you can always express your opinion, your interesting observations of photographic equipment in the comments, your links to other information, but “chewing snot”, they say, I don’t like something, I don’t need it.

            • Uncle

It’s honestly, then your protest is less than amazement. For the sake of contentment with the doors, that wider look at the Danish objects. It’s true, in fact, all Tamron thinks like that, but you don’t want to be afraid of him. Just need to buy .Specifically, I don’t think about it. I don’t think about it. ” the reader, not wiping in the current narratives. Everything is clear and astonishing, moreover, the author will look around the cob by saying the way given to the instance.

            • The Hedgehog

Sergey, the attitude to the lens should be adequate - corresponding to the review. And as for prof. glass, then it is doubtful, and the user will most likely prefer Tokinu 124 or 128, mentioned by the author of the article, if he thinks, and not whines.

    • Lynx

Sergei, I will tell you a terrible secret. All such projects are done primarily by a person “for himself”. And if he does them “not as he likes, but as some individuals begin to moan that they do not like”, then the desire to do this project will disappear altogether.
Therefore, it is logical that Arkady makes reviews EXACTLY because it is convenient and interesting for him, otherwise he would not have done it.

      • Sergei

You guys are like plugs in all holes. Why are you bothering, the author himself can answer. You are upstarts. And now Lynx, listen to the terrible truth: “they keep diaries for themselves,” but here, if there is room for comments, people will leave them.

        • Lynx

          What a horror!
will be. But Arkady himself decides how to run a website / blog. This is dragging his right, as well as not listening to any "and I want you to do as I like"

  • Igor

There is only one conclusion - no matter what budget lens you put on, the result will depend on the quality of manufacture of each specific instance, but the Nikosh D8o will always be good)).

    • Sergei

After reading, one gets the impression about all the lenses Tamron Aspherical LD DI II SP AF 11-18mm 1: 4.5-5.6 [IF] A13, and not about the specific "described".

  • anonym

And I liked the lens, or rather the pictures.

  • Jury

PPS On business - instead of this tamron can be taken for sane money Tokina 12-24 or 11-16 versions of DX or DX II - spend the same money or slightly more (especially if you take the non-motorized version).

  • Sergei

I express my opinion, and “whining” and “Chewing snot” is not communication at all, but splashing bile and foam towards me.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This view does not apply to the lens.

    • Alexander

“The grass used to be greener”… Your opinion is unfounded. If you have already decided to write something, give reasons. And so, this is nothing and looks like spam that you need to rub.

  • Oleg

Thanks for the review! Regarding this one: “At the same time, Canon, Sony, Pentax systems have their own good options for 'over-widths' for crop.” - Alas, Sony has no native alternatives.
Sony 11-18, this is the hero of this review in the new case. Before the purchase of the photo unit, some of Minolta’s latest lenses were made by Tamron. And surprisingly, Sony does not want to release something better, because there are no alternatives, except for Sigma, Tokin and other Tamrons. Tokina 11-16 / 2.8 sonivoda love. Although, I think, if the price for this 11-18 were adequate, he would be forgiven for the flaws without problems :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

By the way, yes, Minolta DT and Sony DT are copies of this Tamron. Fixed

  • Amateur photographer_

In my opinion, for my tsini - even good about, active. So you don’t need a nozzle zhuvati - everyone isn’t dogodish!

  • anonym

... shield? canon?! are you kidding? !! 11

    • Oleg

      Fierce guy!

  • anonym

Photos are just awesome, where is this beauty?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the Mezhdurechensk regional landscape park, this is indicated in the review.

  • Sergei

Is it possible to post photos on this resource devoted to preparations for the victory parade? Here in Nizhenm Novgorod I just filmed a rehearsal. But I don’t know if these photos will be perceived as a provocation? In general, is it possible or not worth it?

    • Yarkiya

They will perceive it as a provocation, it hurts the time is not easy now. It’s better to shoot nature.

      • anonym

        Adequate people will not accept.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Sergey, you can post. But if the comment is political in nature - blacklist without trial.

  • Alexander

as an amateur (with a meager budget) I really liked the review. The photos are great too. I did not repulse the desire to buy this model), but I already have 8A Bearing. Thanks for the review!

    • Vitaliy PhotoInterSeller

I can sell such a Tamron 11-18mm. for Nikon!

It is unfortunate that the prize is from the USA.

The mill and the functional miracles for all the characteristics.

The lens hood is unoriginal, it is identical to you.

  • Sergei

Then I’m better nature, indeed the times are now like this - what kind of nafig politeness is watered))))
A wide-angle is a topic in demand. Previously, I went to the crop from 24-85. It seems to be enough. Now it’s 18-140. It’s more universal, of course, but it’s not the same (although in principle it’s enough for my tasks. It would be interesting to see what the focal orders of 10-11-12-16 give in general a wider wide range.

  • Pastor

I love shiriki) I have only two so far - sigma 10-20 and canon 10-22. But my dream is to replace them with canon 17-40 / sigma 8-16 and canon 10-18is. 17-40 is interesting in that I do not yet have shirikov on ff, but it should be sigma with its latitude, and canon with a stub. I really hope that kind people will give you this canon 10-18is to try. I personally would gladly exchange my more expensive and metallic 10-22 for it because of the stub. For the sake of a stub at a wide angle, I even bought myself a Sony with a stabilized matrix (though I have not yet found a width for this bayonet). I am very pleased with the opportunity to get sharp handheld shots at a shutter speed of half a second.
And by the way, Arkady, maybe I misunderstand something, but sigma 8-16 is not a fisheye, the distortion is corrected there, and, judging by the reviews and comparisons, even better than in sigma 10-20. It is strange that according to your link sigma 8-16 is also called a fishy.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

    • Denis

I’m at 11-18 and so get sharp pictures at shutter speeds of 0.5-1 s, is it really that difficult at overshoot?

      • Volodya

        Is this a sharp shot?

      • Pastor

Yes, it’s very difficult. There is no arguing against physics and physiology. The heart pumps blood, the hands tremble even at the sniper. If 1/10 by 10mm on crop I have one of the two frames still works well, then 1/5 already has 95% soap, as in your example. A stub allows even for 1 s to make a sharp shot with your hands.

  • PhotoDro

And what is a parse to a joyful? And where does the anime?

  • Andrei

What is characteristic is the lens smashed into feathers and feathers, and put the pictures so that immediately I wanted such a glass.

    • Nathanmessenger

And what did you want? Soap soap, Tamron's signature “handwriting” is recognized, alas.
It's all about the beauty of nature.

Thanks for your review. The lens is unfortunately close to “none”. There is no desire - to take and play.

  • Catherine

Is the lens compatible with the d800? I can not understand on foreign sites they write that no

    • B. R. P.

To quote from this review: “The exact list of Nikon DSLRs with a built-in focus motor this lens will focus on automatically:

      D1, D1h, D1x, D2x, D2xs, D2h, D2hs
      D3, D3x, D3s, D4, D4s, D5
      Df

Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro, S2 Pro, S3 Pro, S3 Pro UVIR, S5 Pro, IS Pro
Kodak DCS PRO 14n, DCS Pro SLR / n ”

      • Arkady Shapoval

This is an autofocus list only.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This lens is for Niko DX cameras. The Nikon D800 is a Nikon FX camera, with all that it implies. In short, you shouldn't use it on d800.

  • Nick

in my opinion these are the most beautiful photos that I have ever seen in the reviews. and the conclusion is strange - that the lens is bad.
as it does not quite fit the conclusion and the photos themselves.
and besides - there are no examples in equal

    • Arkady Shapoval

beautiful photos can be obtained with any technique, but this does not change the fact that the lens is weak
