Acall 135mm f Review: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd.

This review presents the Acall 135mm f: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd. with M42x1 / 45,5 landing thread, but it can also be found in the version for rangefinder cameras, with M39 × 1 / 28,8 landing thread (Leica standard).

If you know interesting information on the Acall brand, as well as the manufacturer Kyoei, write in the comments. Most likely the Acall 135mm f: 3.5 is a copy of another lens.

Acall 135mm f: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd.

Acall 135mm f: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd.

Acall 135mm f: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd. perfectly assembled, the lens barrel is completely metal. The Acall 135mm f: 3.5 weighs as much as 465 grams. The lens uses light filters with a rare 46 mm diameter. The Acall 135mm f: 3.5 came to my review with an original metal hood, which is screwed into the light filter thread. The lens barrel and hood are zebra-colored. The lens was originally supplied in a leather case. On the case, I could not find instructions about the country of manufacture.

The focus ring rotates approximately 320 degrees (almost a full turn). During focusing, the front of the body rim extends forward, while the front lens does not rotate. During focusing, the focus ring itself also moves forward. Focusing is performed by moving the entire lens block.

The lens has a distance scale indicated in feet only. The minimum focusing distance is 5 feet (about 1.54 meters). The maximum magnification ratio is only 1: 9. There is also a DOF scale for F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 and a red 'R' mark for infrared shooting.

The lens has two aperture control rings: installations and presets. The preset ring can take only fixed values: F / 3.5, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. The preset ring rotates smoothly and allows you to set any intermediate value.

A feature of the lens can be considered twelve-petal diaphragm. Aperture blades poorly blackened. At values from F / 4 to F / 16, the petals form a hole with notches, which in shape resembles a circular saw blade. At values from F / 16 to F / 22, the petals form a circular hole without nicks. In everyday shots, it is difficult to notice the deterioration of the bokeh from chipping, but when shooting individual bright light sources, they still appear (example on f / 8.0).

Most likely, the lens has a single layer of simple chemical coating. The front lens is ash-colored, the back one is orange. I did not notice yellowness in JVI and in pictures, which is inherent to some old lenses.

On the net you can find information that the optical design of the Acall 135mm f: 3.5 uses 4 elements in 3 groups. Most likely the optical scheme is similar to the 'Sonnar', this indirectly confirms the resulting lens pattern.

In the center of the frame, the lens is sharp even at F / 3.5, but suffers from noticeable chromatic aberrations and slight vignetting. The most serious lens problem is the loss of contrast when working in side and backlighting. In 'counter' F / 3.5. The Acall 135mm f: 3.5 captures flare in different colors pretty well. The hood is of little help in combating backlighting. But the lens's drawing is quite pleasant, similar to many other inexpensive 135s.

Acall 135mm f: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd. can be considered a good budget portrait lens. However, when used on crop cameras, it can be slightly 'long'. Personally, I'm a big fan of the 135mm focal length. If we discard the complete helplessness of the lens in front of flares, then the lens is very similar to the Soviet Jupiter 37A 3,5 / 135.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.

Results

Acall 135mm f: 3.5 Kyoei Optical Co., LTd. - 'average' such a 135-piece. Among the advantages - good assembly, 12-flat diaphragm and a nice picture. Among the shortcomings - an uneven aperture opening and fear of exposure.

At flea markets, sometimes, for such a 'rarity' they ask for a lot of money, but for practical use the Acall 135mm f: 3.5 is of no particular value, since there are a large number of other successful and inexpensive similar lenses, and even with a relative aperture of 1: 2.8, and not 1: 3.5, like our hero.

Even a mediocre lens + a beautiful model + an experienced photographer = great shots :)

  • Valery

Thanks for the review, it looks like some early Japanese there were a lot of them, with very mediocre quality. Arkady, as a rule, yellow lenses with bluish and blue enlightenment turn yellow, yellow enlightenment gives a colder picture. This is purely from personal observations ..

    • Alexander

about enlightenment, everything is true, it is.

  • Amateur photographer_

The sonar scheme is a miracle of the image! Ale zh tsey about, the active absolutely does not trim the controve light ...

    YAKA GARNA DIVCHINA!)))

  • Oleg

Thank you so much for the review. I really liked the picture!

  • alexey_laa

Here ( http://www.savazzi.net/photography/35kyoei.html ) it is written that under the Kyoei brand lenses were produced by the Japanese company Kuribayashi, which was later called Petri.

  • Bert

I’m downloading source codes for squirrels. Loved it! Tomorrow shallow please. :)
I like old lenses. Some kind of "tube" they are. Very often I myself take pictures of my kids with Helios. My father bought it in Anadyr, took pictures of us. Yes, he is gnarled and with oil on the petals, but he is dear. :) And, oddly enough, unlike the good whale N 18-55, it gives a more voluminous picture (if I get into sharpness :).
There is also a NIKON 75-150MM. Monster from Japan, 1985. I also like it very much.

    • Lynx

Fixes in principle give a more voluminous picture than zooms. Feature of the circuit.

  • Valery

Lynx, there are legendary exceptions. For example Nikon AF 35-70mm f = 2.8

after Arkady moved to A7, the samples began to resemble hell pi ..
but he doesn’t admit to himself!

      No one doubts :)

You just got to know the site yesterday? Find old photos with D700 and compare

      • Arkady Shapoval

Better yet, compare with some Fujik :)

        • anonym

Well, suppose, if the fujik is not "some sort", then he will tear your Sonya.

          • Arkady Shapoval

The main thing is that he himself is not blown up :)

            • anonym

Well, yes, I remember this proverb about the sandpiper and about the swamp ... After this comment, all site visitors suddenly suddenly regained their sight and realized that Sonya is much better.

              • Arkady Shapoval

Better Dmitry tell us about fujiki :). At the same time, I have never mentioned any facts that Sony or Fuji are better / worse than each other. But to observe spherical reasoning in a vacuum is very interesting. So what are you saying there, fujik is our everything?

          • Lynx

Oh and again the alpha version of the photographer showed up.

            • anonym

Why was Arkady Fujik pecking, I did not understand.

              • Arkady Shapoval

Everyone has some kind of paranoia about Fujik.

  • anonym

too harsh. like jupiter. still male portraiture!

    I liked _belochka more!

    • Dmitriy

Sharpness is often needed in a female portrait. To smooth the face with blur will not be a problem, but the eyes are beautiful precisely with their sharpness.

  • Oleg

Aperture design is very strange, without smooth transitions of the petals
, the first time I saw this, from
    - for what I think the drawing would be better :-)

    • 10111

Normal. This shape of the petals is needed for a smooth close, i.e. when aperture values are applied at regular intervals. The first to do this on optics was Karl Zeiss before the war.

  • Andrei

Gentlemen, I am certainly not a specialist and not even a pro, but all of these I see here are seasoned, I will say this, to the level of such photos, many still need to grow. Arkady, do not listen to envious people, :) they criticize out of envy :) I personally, who takes pictures on the d5200, has never even dreamed of this. I would have such a level…. I've been taking photos as an amateur since I was 12 years old (right now I'm 39), I took the first pictures at FED-1, back in 1987. :) Kiev-2 enlarger and all that .... Now I decided, after I realized that the video was not mine, I bought the d5200. just bastard ...! By the way, today I became a father for the third time !!!!! bathe in a standing ovation !!!! :) I try to use everything from your articles, but you do not touch upon the topic of photo processing ... this is such an ocean of information .... (here I provoke you) a question on the merits, if possible, community, tell me how to register the serial number of the camera or the model of the camera, in general, so that Photoshop 5 sees my camera by the serial number or by model ... otherwise it refuses to work with RAV, sees a jeep, processes, but the RAV does not want, swears, and writes, give the serial number of the camera ... .. damn :)

    • Alexander

You have problems with Photoshop itself ... There are no serials, the RAV Camera should pick up your raves by itself. Download normal Photoshop, clean the registry, delete everything related to Photoshop and install a new one - it should help !!!

    • Lynx

      Yes.

  • Alexey

Great shots. Bokeh is similar to Heliosovkoe. You have almost summer, beauty :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is not summer, but a flash. Filmed in cloudy weather after rain, this can be seen by the color of greenery.

      • Alexey

From the flash, the leaves do not bloom and the lilac does not bloom;)
We have more foliage just starting to climb out of the kidneys :)

In this regard, we are already quite warm, although today at the wedding I was still working in a jacket.

  • Yarkiya

During, just about the wedding, a couple of days ago, one colleague friend invited a photographer to the wedding, he decided to save a lot, oh, how. The scoundrel knows that I don't shoot weddings, but I have the equipment. Well, I’m okay, at first I agreed, I really asked how many people there would be at the wedding, he says about three hundred people. Well, by local standards, not so much, in short, he said that I would think about it, figure out what's what, decide on the price. I was sitting at home thinking about how everything should be, and suddenly! How lightning struck! And skinton is, skinton! What am I going to do with their skin tone ?! There are three hundred of them, and still Ethiopians ... Three hundred black snouts, well, in the sense of physiognomy. And by the way, they are not completely black, not like, for example, the Sudanese are bluish black, but rather dark chocolate, but there are also lighter ones. And fuck their mom knows what they like better, to be blacker or vice versa. I understand that black and white photographs will not fail here, in general, the couple began to get involved with them. If I was a wedding pro, I would say with authority on any result - it should be so! And then ... In general, he called back, refused, spit some crap about family affairs. In short, I haven't become a wedding photographer yet.

    • Jury

it’s especially cool to take them off if everyone wears bright white clothes :)

    • Lynx

in vain .. the skintones of black Nikon conveys very correctly.

      • Yarkiya

No, well, Yuri correctly said, the bride is black, and the dress is white, shorter than the “rainy day” of the exposure meter. :) Yes, and figs with them, I will not become impoverished, I will continue to torture my insects further.

        • anonym

Bright, what does your friend mean by equipment? In a set, one d7100 without an appropriate lens is not enough, but you can’t take a lot of photos with a hundred-and-one makrushka at a wedding!

          • Yarkiya

Yes, no, I still have glasses, it would be enough for the wedding, just this one’s my most delicious lens.
Yes figs with her with this wedding, I just wrote about her, to revive the conversation, so to speak.
I have new fun now, I invented and made a tool for insects and now I can shoot them live in studio conditions. And before they had to either finish, or freeze, or on the belly to crawl behind them. :)

          • anonym

Here, something like this turns out. Black salpuga in a fighting stance.

    • anonym

You shouldn’t have gone and learned from a friend of the wedding to shoot, for nothing. To shoot a wedding, dear naturalist, one skinton is not enough. People, whatever they may be, must be respected, and if you see black snouts in front of you, then what is generally possible talk ... ..A friend took off the wedding and everything is in order.

  • anonym

really liked the pictures, Arkady used the lights to give charm !!))))
drawing, good, I want to buy Jupiter 37 again ...))

    "M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5)"

45.5 mean in front? Did you screw in there 45.5?
I would not be so categorical about this particular size. because 45.5 I didn’t get into the 135th range finder under the watering can (telisar), and the 44th was hanging out there, and you’ll find the 45th horseradish.

    • Rodion

45.5 is the flange of the lens.

  • Igor

Hello Arkady. Bought today his older brother Petri Orikkor Kuribayashi 180 / 3,5 М42, will he be of interest to you? Kyoei looks like a newer version of similar optics.

  • Jeffrey

I have seen pictures of a 135mm f/3.5 Miranda-branded preset lens which looks exactly like the rather distinctive 135/3.5 Kyoei Acall preset lens in 42mm Pentax mount. The lens was in 44mm Miranda screw mount and was available around 1958-1959. Is any of you familiar with such a lens?
