SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED MACRO review

SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED MACRO review

This review presents the SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED MACRO lens with Konica Auto-Reflex mount (Konica AR). The focal length of the Konica AR is shorter than that of most DLCs, so lenses with this mount are problematic to use on modern SLR cameras. For mirrorless cameras - there are no restrictions, you just need to choose the right adapter.

SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED MACRO looks like this:

The lens specifications are shown in the table:

Review Instance Name SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED ⌀52 LENS MADE IN JAPAN, MACRO, FOR-KONICA, 4273607
A type wide-angle fast discrete lens for full-format film cameras with Konica AR mount. SIGMA also made this lens for other mounts.
Front Filter Diameter 52mm, the lens can only use a hood that is screwed into the thread of the front filter
Focal length 28 mm, EGF for cameras with crop factor 1.5 X is 42 mm. The prefix 'MINI-WIDE' in the lens name means 'mini wide angle'
Number of aperture blades 6 pieces, matte. At F / 4 and at an intermediate value between F / 4 and F / 2.8, the diaphragm blades form small nicks. On the other aperture values, except F / 2.8, the petals form a regular hexagon.
Additional tags the focusing distance scale is indicated in meters and feet. The DOF scale is available for F / 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. There is an orange 'R' mark for infrared operation. Additionally, the lens has a scale that shows magnification factor. The scale has three marks: 1: 9, 1: 6 and 1: 4.5. This scale is located on the retractable portion of the frame of the housing. There is also a red mark-point of the bayonet mount.
Diaphragm blinking diaphragm. There are labels for F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, EE. You can additionally set one intermediate value between each pair of numbers (including between F / 22 and EE). The 'EE' label stands for 'ELECTRIC-EYE' and allows automatic iris control via camera automation. In the 'EE' position, the aperture ring is automatically locked; to set a different aperture value, press the metal button and turn the aperture control ring.
MDF 22 cm, maximum magnification ratio is 1: 4.5.
The weight 225 g (not accurate)
Optical design 6 elements in 6 groups (not exact). Multi-coated optics (labeled 'MULTI-COATED' on the lens). The front lens has a blue and green cast.
Manufacturer country LENS MADE IN JAPAN
Period C. 1985-1995

The lens is perfectly assembled. The focus and aperture rings are rubberized. During focusing, the front lens does not rotate, only the frame rim leaves. The focus ring rotates smoothly, its stroke is a little more than 90 degrees. Pleases the minimum focusing distance. Focusing is performed by moving the entire lens block. The lens is very pleasant to use by touch :).

The lens showed moderate sharpness at F / 2.8 in the center of the frame and weak in the corners and edges. By closing the aperture at least to f / 4, the center becomes very sharp. The main disadvantage of the lens is chromatic aberration, which do not go away at any value of the number F. The lens has good contrast and color reproduction, it creates glare in backlight, and works fine in side light. Distortion fixed well.

Source files can download from this link (33 photos in the '.ARW' format, 600 Mb). All photos taken using protective filter Kenko UV SL-39 52mm Japan. On the Sony a7 camera, I used the lens with the FOTGA digital adapter KONICA-NEX without any problems. Part of the photo was taken in APS-C crop mode. After a week of agony with wide-angle Jupiter 12 и MIR-1 Sigma seemed to me just a super-fabulous lens with luxury control and super-contrast in the side light :).

Two wide-angle lenses SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED MACRO and MIR-1 2.8 / 37 AUTOMATIC

Thank you for the excellent review. It’s so nice to look at the spring on the pictures !! the colors are also nice. Not what I have here. In my opinion I urgently need to buy a Sony a7, especially since you can leave the whole park of your Nikon lenses. 5100 is good, but FF is better :)

    • Alexander

Do you have a d5100 bad with colors ??? It seems to me that the problem is not in the camera :)

      • an norge

No, Nikon's colors are normal, there is no spring in the yard, everything is gray :(. And Arkady's grass is green, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming !!!!

      • Pastor

And I have problems with colors on the d5100. Both on d7000 and on d5200. And on Canon 600d problems. There are no problems on Canon 400d and 5d, on Nikon D80 there are no problems either.

“I urgently need to buy a sony a7” -Where the wind is, I go there.

      • an norge

And what does the “wind” have to do with it? !! firstly, the full format, but I still have analog lenses, fifty dollars on an analog Nikon, and on 5100 there are two big differences. here I found a Bauer p8l projector, and there is isko-gottingen kiptaron 1.2 50mm, and it has a 35mm flange. and each has a unique drawing: leitz wetzlar elmaron 5100 3, leitz wetzlar hektor 2.8 150 (my favorite now!), kolor-revuetar-s 2.5 120 ms. and it began as I read from Arkady about 2.8 85 from a Russian projector. there are no Russians , you have to use bourgeois :)

  • Asp

I liked the photo with greens with flowered grass, the colors are nice clean, the plastic is blurry, I immediately wanted to look for the price, but I remembered about his working segment was already upset)))

UPD and yet is it possible to somehow make friends with Canon, what kind of adapter is needed

      • Alexander

There is no Konica AR adapter for Canon, and if it does exist, it will have a compensation lens, the lens will degrade image quality, but it can be redone, after conversion it works fully without problems.

      • Dmitriy

Canon (EF / EF-S) has 44 mm flange distance, Konica AR - 40,5 mm. You can make friends Konik's lens with a Canon carcass either by drowning the lens into a 3,5 mm carcass (it is unlikely that this is possible, you need to “saw through” the lens. Although I have seen similar exercises with Konica on the Internet), or by resigning to shooting exclusively macro subjects (though you will have to adapt the lens mount to the body, for example, by screwing an adapter to the EF / EF-S instead of the native mount). Do you need it, such difficulties? What's wrong with more compatible lenses?

      • Asp

Many thanks it turns out there is the same but with ноп̶е̶р̶л̶а̶м̶у̶т̶р̶о̶в̶ы̶м̶и̶ ̶п̶у̶г̶в̶и̶ц̶а̶м̶и̶ with the necessary mount :)

  • Alexander

This objective is also in excellent condition. Last time, SS
igma is attracting more and more.

  • Alexey

Arkady thank you for this project! With him, I quite high up my level in photography, with him I realized what I needed, what I lack and where to move on!
Always reading your articles, I personally do not have enough portraits, it is very interesting how a person will look on this or that glass. In many of course they are present, but still….
Offtop a little. (maybe someone will be useful) Reading and thinking about Soviet optics, I knew that I really like the volumetric and thin drawing. Owning a camera Nikon d600 acquired Helios 44-2 sharp in the center and not very sharp at the edges, not even very sharp at the edges. Yes, you want to focus on infinity ... But still photographing the planarom is a pleasure. It was decided to take the Carl Zeiss planar 50 1.4 zf 1 version and that I got
sharpness at the edges, although not so strong in the center and noble drawing not like Helios twists, but still very similar. I also don't need another camera or lens anymore, and everything suits me, and manual optics have their own charm ... When af cling, you want to twist the diaphragm and focus) in terms of energy .. Yes, and af did not become so trusting.

Hello! Sorry for this sidebar, please advise a wide-angle lens at a normal price (up to 1500 UAH) for 1100 kenon. Thank you for your reply!

    • Lysyi71

      kit 18-55 “our everything”.

  • Alan Grek

I got such a lens. although it would probably be more correct to say “almost the same”. and now, in accordance with the text of the article, I will try to explain why:
    1. I have a Nikon mount. at what factory, not homemade)
    2. The front looks the same, but in the side view there are differences (although not significant). I will try to reset the photo later.
    3. The diaphragm with notches is also also between 4 and 5,6.
    4. There is no EE mark on the diaphragm ring.
    5. The focusing ring is rubberized, but the diaphragm is metal.
    6. the focus ring rotates 180 degrees, not 90. and judging by the photo, it rotates in the opposite direction than the one presented in the review.
    serial number 1111895

I didn’t do testing and I haven’t had it yet (if anyone is interested, ask, I’ll try to answer ..

    • Alan Grek

at the expense of 180 degrees I lied, actually a little less: about 170.

    • Serg_XXL

Tell Alan (Greek), have you tried it already? What are your impressions? I’m looking at exactly what you described.

      • Alan Grek

my sample is not in perfect condition. I personally find it convenient to focus on sharpness; the diaphragm, as described by Arkady, cracks strangely, but there is a screw, if you loosen it, the diaphragm ring can rotate non-discretely and accordingly silently; and as regards the technical quality of the picture - nothing beyond that, just a good shirik, especially considering the price (I got it for 2 thousand). with back / side light, works fine, but not ideal, not often, but you can catch hares, the contrast sometimes drops. sharpness is enough for most tasks, but I personally like Industar 61L / s more.
on the whole I absolutely agree with Arkady's conclusion: "Not perfect, but quite usable."

        • Serg_XXL

Thanks Alan. I will take it. Found in perfect condition (box, manual, lens hood) and a quiet price, and most importantly from birth under Nikon (without any adapters). Accordingly, for current non-creative tasks.

A couple of years I used such a lens on the film Olympus, it helped out great! Although of course it works poorly in the open, but still 15x21 frames of acceptable quality can be, but it is better to cover the aperture a little. In the 99th year there was no time for fat, and thanks for that. Sigma 24mm f / 2,8 is a completely different matter - it also gives good quality on an open aperture, and slightly hiding the sharpness of the super with this 28mm sky and the ground. I bought a flattering reviews on the forums and I do not regret a single gram, I advise you not to dwell on this one more expensive, but it's worth my money, although I took a cheap price.

  • AgentSmith13

    I bought a Sigma Mini-Wide 28 f 2.8 Nikon (not II), even on a crop everything suits. Looking for 24 ...
    Photo from him:

It took about 5 minutes to get used to the glass, then - full speed ahead. Native hood, Sigma Perfect Hood. Without a hood, glare creeps a little, with - beauty. The inside is pasted over with velvet, is placed on a clip, like a lid. And so - all the same, the front lens does not rotate, macro 1: 4. From landscape to flower with elements of "light" macro. And most importantly - small, light, well, the color rendition is good + bokeh. I did not try it on the open one, at 5,6 - 8 sharpness more than enough. And the luminosity is enough until shooting on a sunny day on ISO 100 + exposure 1/1250. Camera - D3100.

By the way, what on Nikon (I have a crop, but it is desirable to go to FF, who knows what will happen next) from the “wide” one should I buy more? Preferably at a not too biting price ... The goal is a landscape on all kinds of fishing / hunting / mushroom / specialty trips for a photo. Zenitar 16 mm? Samyang has disappeared from the shops, and the price is now ... I regret not having bought it “before the revolution”.

    • Lynx

the zenith on the crop is sad.
Good shirikas are never "not biting". Alas.

    • Lynx

Well, alas, shirik under the crop and under the FF will have to buy a separate one, if wisely.

  • AgentSmith13

For on whale 18-55 you can shoot a beautiful shot, but you want a fix, purely for landscape / architecture, you can (or do you need?)) And fish.

  • Eugene Maps

My lens has droplets under the lens, over the entire area, just a slightly different lens is true, it's called SIGMA MINI-WIDE “1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED”, Pentax K, 85 years old, I've probably seen only on ebay, and more no information about it on Google.
I would be glad to know how to get to the inner surface of the outer lens in the shortest way. I tried to pry the front frame, which is around the lens, having previously unscrewed the screw on the side, but something does not work out, it sits tight. Maybe she doesn’t act in film. If anyone fumbles, I will be glad to advise. Thanks.

    • Boris

The inscription ring is unscrewed, under it, unscrew the ring with a caliper at your own peril and risk, and now you are already in the lens unit. Do not damage the blacking of the lenses along the edge. I had one with condensation, washed and forward. Great staff on sony nex.

  • Arthur

Are lenses with a KONICA mount via an adapter only installed on a mirrorless camera?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      in general, yes
