Review of JUPITER-8M 2/53

JUPITER-8M 2/53 is a modification of the previous version of the lens 'JUPITER-8' - JUPITER-8M 2/50.

Various modifications of the Jupiter-8 lens: JUPITER-8M 2/53, JUPITER-8M 2/50, JUPITER-8M 1: 2 F = 5cm P and JUPITER-8M1: 2 F = 5cm P

Various modifications of the Jupiter-8 lens: JUPITER-8M 2/53 (from this review), JUPITER-8M 2/50, JUPITER-8M 1: 2 F = 5cm P и JUPITER-8M1: 2 F = 5cm P

JUPITER-8M 2/53 and JUPITER-8M 2/50 do not differ in anything special. The new version only has a slightly modified case frame. The real focal length of the JUPITER-8 / 8M series lenses is about 52,5 mm, therefore the new version in its designation has the parameters '2/53', similar to the '1.8 / 53' HELIOS-103 1.8 / 53. JUPITER-8M 2/53 refers to one of the most recent modifications of this lens.

JUPITER-8M 2/53 looks like this:

Source files can download from this link (14 photos in the '.ARW' format, 299 Mb). On camera Sony a7 I used the lens with a homemade adapter Contax-Kiev - Sony E.

On camera Nikon D80 I used the lens with an adapter ring M42 - Nikon F (aka KP-42 / N) and an extension tube for M42, 1 cm thick. The lens is 'recessed' in the extension tube and fixed with tape. The ring is screwed into the M42 - Nikon F adapter, after which everything is installed on the camera :). In this state, the focusing distance is about 20 cm.

Various modifications of the Jupiter-8 lens: JUPITER-8M 2/53, JUPITER-8M 2/50, JUPITER-8M 1: 2 F = 5cm P and JUPITER-8M1: 2 F = 5cm P

Instead of a conclusion:

More than half a dozen JUPITER-8 / 8M lenses have visited my review. If there is a choice which lens to take, then I would focus on the early versions of Jupiter-8, that's why:

  1. The original Yu-8s have smooth aperture adjustment, which is useful for shooting movies.
  2. The diaphragm ring in the old Yu-8 rotates quite easily, it can be moved with one hand. In the Yu-8M, the ring rotates tight, for this you have to hold the lens with one hand, and change the aperture value with the second. Because of this inconvenience with the Yu-8M, it’s easier to bring down the focus.
  3. The diaphragm blades of the Ju-8 form a more regular opening than that of the Ju-8M, which has 'circular saws' at half the values. In addition, the aperture blades of the Yu-8 are more opaque than those of the Yu-8M.
  4. Yu-8 has an optical design closer to the original Sonnar 1: 2 f = 5cm Carl Zeiss Jena. Yu-8M were made according to the same optical scheme, but with a different element base (the difference is shown in the review JUPITER-8M 1: 2 F = 5cm P).

The advantages of the U-8M can be attributed to improved clarity, slightly higher contrast in the images and a little less yellow-green tint. In addition, the Yu-8M is a newer lens, which theoretically makes it possible to find it in a more 'alive' state.

Catalog modern brand lenses 'Zenitar' и 'Helios' can look at this link.

  • Yarkiya

Now I understand how wrong I was, considering Radozhiva a Pronon site. Radozhiva is the site of aliens, Jupiterians. :)

    • Lynx

But the Krasnogor type resumed the release of jups, you can observe new models!
      they ruled 50 / 1,2.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For some reason, everyone considers Radozhiva either Pronezon or a site about manual optics, but we all understand as a matter of fact :)

  • Max

I would like to see more interesting reviews on the site than a review of a hundred minor modifications of Jupiter-8, which differs from the previous one by another scratch on the case ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

And what did you not like about the previous review of the unique Zenith-22C? :)

    • Oleg

You have a desire to see reviews of other optics, but what have you done for this? As far as I understand the site’s work, Arkady is reviewing what he can get for review, so you need to somehow help the site, provide optics for the reviews.

      • anonym

I offered optics, Arkady replied that he did not have time for this. Apparently, he was busy with a heap of Jupiters)

        • Arkady Shapoval

I repeat, there really is no time for serious optics now.

        • THE

Rather, Arkady was busy with his main job. Do not give up trying to transfer optics to Arkady anyway and everything will turn out :)

        • Oleg

There is no time now, it will appear later :). On the one hand, good optics requires much more time for thoughtful testing, on the other hand, when it is already planned to do tests of existing lenses, there is not always a desire to change these plans :) Yes, even adjust to other people's terms.

          • Arkady Shapoval

Well, very often they offer "trash" no better than this Jupiter :)

  • Timur

For the kit there is not enough black Jupiter-8, in the form of a barrel which)

    • Arkady Shapoval

The kit still lacks about 12 Yu-8s, ranging from the very first Krasnogorsk and ending with the "NB".

  • Bypass

I suppose that the next review will be on the lens "Jupiter 8"

    • Arkady Shapoval

Take it higher :) 8M at least :)

  • Dmitriy

I note that you have Arkady, very big palms!
Only two lenses fit in mine, and you developed your arms right up to 4!
That's what years of experience mean!
ps in joke order. I am aware of the size of Jupiter-8 :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Dmitry, thanks for the humor :) The Yu-8 is really tiny, although the Yu-8NB is the same as your Zeiss :)

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, now I present your plan for surveys for the summer: “The kit still lacks about 12 Yu-8” :)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

Now I can’t sleep with this idea :) but, at least, there should be a review of another Yu-8 under Contact!

  • Oleg R

And I dig reviews! I enjoy reading about junk. Especially when I used it, back in the era of BW film. Well, then I did not think about optical circuits, about enlightenment, etc. But the films and frames remained. Memory however. Now I understand what I’m shooting. In general, I have no strong complaints against the old Soviet optics. Claims, for example, arose to the film, especially to color. And to chemistry. Arkady, continue your reviews. This is informative.

  • Oleg R

I made a mistake in the word LIKE ... Sorry!

    • Alexander Malyaev

      Do not go on! :)

  • Rodin

I really like pictures on jupiter-8. I really regret that you can’t put it in the normal DSLR in the normal way. Maybe there is a 50mm zonar with a focal length of more than 40mm?

  • Sergey Jung

I accidentally fell into the hands of a black m 8. and since I am lying with a broken leg and there is no opportunity to buy an adapter. Well, really wanted to try. Found such a solution for Nikon. I took the lid from the carcass, cut a hole and impudently wrapped the lens. everything worked out . excellent macro

  • Yana

Firstly, thanks for your work! According to your reviews, I bought each of my lenses. Everything is always written in an accessible and concise way!
Now I have Jupiter -8M 2/53 in my hands, I want to put it on my Nikon d5100 for macro, which transition rings do I need to buy, M42 is already coming to me without an adjustment lens, what else do I need?

  • Yana

    I also forgot to add, I also have a FED3 with an I-61L / d 2,8 / 53 lens and Zorkiy 4K with an industrial-50 3,5 / 50 lens, can they also be put on Nikon d 5100? And how can I do this?
I don’t know why, but having already a number of modern optics (fifty fifty Nikor, wide 1,8-11 Tokin, TV 16-70, standard zoom 300-18) I was imbued with Soviet heavy pieces of iron to the ends of my hair))) I really want all of them poyuzat and still looking forward to Helios 105m-44 or 4m-44 !!!

    • Jury

getting on is not a problem :) Before that, it should be noted that lenses from the FED and Zorky on the D5100 will be suitable only for macro, and instead of Helios 44m-4 or 44m-2, it is better to put Helios-5100N on the D81

      • Yana

I wrote that I need them for macro.
I considered option 81H, even found it was ready to use, with a bayonet mount and set to infinity. But after reading a million forums and reviewing different photos, I still like the way it turns background 44m-2 (4)

        • Jury

if you like - try 44m-2 :) Industars for macro can be installed through the adapter M39 to M42 and the standard KP-42 / N, I also installed my Industar through a set of M39 macro rings, in the review https://radojuva.com.ua/2013/03/obzor-industar-22-3-5-50mm-p/ there is a photo of the line for such a bunch

          • Yana

I have a set of rings from industrial 50, now I’ll try to attach the photo here, can I use them as macro rings?
Well, how to use them with i-61L / D and industrial 50, this is understandable, but how to adapt these rings to Jupiter, there is no twist)))

            • Jury

yes, the rings can be used, buy another adapter ring M39-M42, KP-42 / N and take it off, but how to screw Jupiter to Nikon - read in the comments of the reviews of these Jupiters, they talked about it, in my opinion :)

              • Yana

Thank you, I also went to look for M39-M42)))

              • Yana

we are now sitting in the review of these Jupiters))) in the comments I read for the cover from the carcass where the commentator drowned the lens))) this option does not suit me, but in the review itself the possibility of a macro ring with adhesive tape sounds)) but here is where and when it is not possible to glue me )) HELP, I already ordered all rings and adapters)))

              • Jury

Arkady took the M42 macro ring, 1 cm long, inserted the lens into it and glued them with tape (insert the lens with the side that is on the camera), then screwed up the KP-42 / N and installed it on the camera. Try it, maybe he’s flying into the M39 macro ring, which already exists.

              • Yana

Yes, it does, but how to glue it with tape) How to wrap around the lens by going over the edge of the macro ring?

  • Yana

So what else do I need an adapter other than M42?

  • Vasya Kotov

put Jupiter on the rings with tape this is what happened

  • Vasya Kotov

    and here's another ...
