SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm

SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm is an old 460x zoom lens for film cameras. The version from this review has a Pentax K mount. The lens is large, metal, well assembled, and weighs XNUMX grams. The lens barrel has as many as four rings: focusing, zoom (zoom), macro mode and aperture. In addition, the lens also has a built-in telescopic hood that locks very flimsy in the active position. IN one of the video reviews of this lens for the Nikon F mount, it is noticeable that the lens hood is fixed much denser than on the specimen that I visited in my test.

There is another Soligor lens model with similar characteristics - MC SOLIGOR C / D ZOOM + MACRO 35-70MM 1: 2.5-3.5, the main distinguishing feature of which is the 'Push-Pull' design and different optical design.

SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm

SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm

The focus ring rotates 90 degrees, the stroke of the ring is very smooth and pleasant. During focusing, the front lens rotates and the trunk of the lens lengthens. There is a marking with a focusing distance on the focus ring. MDF is 70 cm (in normal mode). There are tags for working in the infrared spectrum for 35, 50 and 70 mm.

When the focal length is changed, the lens trunk is lengthened, while the front lens does not rotate. There are labels for 35, 40, 50, 60, 70 mm. When the focal length is changed, focusing is lost. The maximum trunk length is at the 35mm focal length. They joke that such lenses should be called not '35 -70 ', but '70 -35' :).

To use the macro mode, press the lock button located on the ring responsible for macro photography and turn the ring in the direction indicated by the yellow arrow. While using this ring, the frame rim extends forward. On the macro mode ring there are marks indicating the magnification: 1: 8, 1: 6, 1: 5, 1: 3.7, 1: 3, 1: 2.7. The maximum magnification is available at 70 mm focal length. In fact, the maximum magnification ratio of 1: 2.7 is rather meager, but still it is much better than nothing at all :).

The diaphragm ring allows you to set only fixed values: F / 2.5, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. The diaphragm consists of 8 blades, on covered values you can see the edges of the nuts. At F / 4, the petals form a notch in the form of a circular saw.

There is a 'movie' rectangular opening on the rear lens side. A blinking aperture device works on Pentax cameras. The 'AUTO' prefix in the lens name is responsible only for the presence of such an 'automatic' iris.

The maximum f / 2.5 aperture is only 1.25 times larger than the standard f / 2.8. In general, we can assume that the SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm is a fast zoom lens. On full-format cameras, a set of focal lengths from 35 to 70 mm is very convenient. When using all, double zoom in no way causes discomfort.

SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm

On open apertures, the lens was not particularly impressive, but it is worth covering the aperture, as sharpness increases noticeably, even along the edges of the frame. It’s a pity, only the angles are weak at any value of the number F. The lens more or less tolerates side and backlight, even vignetting on open apertures is not very scary. Without a little distortion could not have done. On open diaphragms noticeably chromatite. Surprisingly, this SOLIGOR was not as bad a lens as expected.

Externally, the SOLIGOR MC ZOOM-AUTO F2.5 / 3.5 f = 35-70mm looks rather strange and, at the same time, solid. The work is also pretty good.

Cool lens! I thought at zooms the aperture was always 2.8 and less until the sigma 18-35 1.8 was released, but it turns out it was. And so long ago. Awesome lens. It is a pity in my city it is unrealistic to find, and ordering without twisting in your hands is scary.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 and indeed, a lot of zoom with aperture from 2.5-2.6-2.7. And sigma 18-35 1.8 is only for crop, for the full frame there isn’t anything like it yet.

      • Pastor

More Tokin and much more? Yeah, I don’t have much knowledge yet :)
Yes, it’s a pity that 18-35 is only for crop. But it seems like sigma almost immediately after the release of 18-35 1.8 promised something like 24-40 2.0 in ff. Moreover, it was rumored that in the first half of 2015 this new product will see the light of day. True, the pursuit of aperture does not always bring results for both photographers and manufacturers. 18-35 1.8, many groaned for the jambs of autofocus, the benefit is at least with sharpness order.

        • Arkady Shapoval

At first they talked about 24-70 2.0, now everything is blown away to 24-40?

          • Pastor

I read somewhere that they can’t pull too much range and therefore will make it shorter. But in general, you are right, the news was originally about 24-70 2.0, and even with a stub. And dreams were about the premiere in 2014.

No, I'm in Russia. In principle, I found one on ebay, but to buy a lens without touching it and not trying it in business is scary.

    Arkady, thanks for the review!
It is a pity, there are no macro shots on near-open ones - IMHO, this lens is strong with a pleasant blurring of the background ( http://flickeflu.com/set/72157627635004495 + https://www.flickr.com/photos/somedonkus/sets/72157644317065166/with/14058822663/ ).

    Please complete the review:
    1. The lens is made by Kobori and it has “brothers” - Tefnon 35-70 mm f / 2.5-3.5 Macro and Access P-MC 35-70 mm f / 2.5-3.5.
    2. The lens is for sale (and indicate my email);).

Sample photos do not indicate aperture.

    • Sergei

I know from experience that it is difficult to shoot with a manual and remember (write down?) The diaphragm on which this or that frame was shot. Test targets are one thing, and “live” and rather dynamic versatile shooting is another.

  • Jury

It was like Nikon, with an idle macro mode. Maybe that's why I didn’t remember anything good about the lens. It does not hold back light well, the small stroke of the focus ring is probably the smallest of all the manuals that I used.

  • Sergei

Yes, that is what it is - the focusing ring travel from infinity to 0,7 m is about 90 degrees. (by memory). But the course is VERY smooth (the smoothest among all the lenses that I had in my hands).

    • Igor_K

90 degrees from infinity to 0,7 is also "for happiness"! On my Vivitar 35-105 \ 3,2-4 (N 77 ...) also, by the way, "Kobori", from infinity to 0,6 (in macro mode) - 90 degrees, and in normal mode, from infinity to 1,6 m maximum 15 degrees! At the same time, it “hits” and quite easily! It's just incomprehensible, how does Kobori do it? Definitely a very interesting manufacturer.

  • Vladimir

At 90% of the photo there is a slight parasitic violet-pink tint.

  • Nnecto

wonderful lens, I had to completely disassemble it first, anyway to clean it from the amount of dust that was inside, and then unscrew the part at the back of which prevented its use on the Canon 5D Mark 2 (anyone with the appropriate screwdriver can handle it) and here after that I appreciated the picture that I received from it over the entire range of focal lengths, but of course the most important thing for me was the macro mode 1: 2,7, this is very cool! for the similar vario zoom!, because the similar in Zeiss and the watering can in macro modes has a maximum increase of 1: 4 on average, while the pictures in the 35-70 mm range without using the macro mode left a very good impression on the Canon 40D crop and on the Canon 5D Mark 2
p / s my lens was called Tefnon 35-70 mm f / 2.5 / 3.5 MC Macro multi-brand produced both as Soligor and as Access

Arkady, I wanted to ask for advice ... At the moment we have - Nikon D3100, Sigma EF-530 DG ST flash, Nikkor 18-55 VR (kit), Nikkor 55-200 VR, Jupiter 37A (not MC, but VERY good and sharp), MC Helios 81 N (similar to Jupiter), Arsat 80-200 (I rarely get Nikkor - I like it ...), Vivitar 55 f2,8 MC Auto Macro (1: 1) (generally a beast). I shoot mainly only with manual glasses, autofocus - exclusively at events such as various meetings and business trips.
Question 1 - what is more or less wide for landscapes to take? 28 mm?
Question 2 - A ring macro flash like the same Meike for macro (flowers, insects, an object - rarely, and for work - all kinds of chips, laptop microcircuits ...) is it worth taking? Well, haven't you come across a vivitar like mine, but 90 mm? How much worse is Tamron (90)?

    • Lynx

Native Nikonovsky 20 / 2,8. True, not cheap, about 20 thousand on ebee.
      Tokinu 11-16.
      ……
You can take it if the main lighting and clarity, and not working with light. Or buy an "adapter" - a nozzle that turns an ordinary flash into a ring flash.

Basically, I bought all the glasses, and I bought the device after carefully reading your reviews - Nikon appeared 2 years ago, before that there was Olympus (and before it - Kiev-19 :-)) + 3 glasses, but they stole some parasites on vacation. ...

  • Sergyg

And no one will say how he is with parfocalism (with zooming)?

    • Igor_K

And in my opinion, Arkady has an answer to your question in the review itself, and it sounds something like this: "... When the focal length is changed, focusing on focus is lost.", Unless of course it means - banal fingers touching the focusing ring when rotating the change ring focal length. But usually, lenses with variable aperture when zooming, are variofocal. It seems to me that in the presence of not the worst picture with a "plump" saturated color rendering, a very good macro mode with beautiful bokeh, and for its modest cost also parfocality - it would be too good to be true! All colleagues - Happy New Year, good pictures and grateful clients!

  • Sergyg

    after:

did everyone notice bokeh of different sizes (large in the center, and several times smaller on the periphery!) in the photo of earrings (alder?)

    Arkady Good day to you!
Happy holiday to all! PEACE LABOR MAY. Thank you very much for your reviews, I learn a lot of interesting things, what can you say for SOLIGOR MC 28-85 1: 3.5-4.5 ???
I have something to say on this lens.
Health and successful staff to all!
Is it possible to attach P / S in the comments of the photo?

    Hello, Arkady.
    in theory, a curious aggregate.
I would like to know how comfortable working with him in conjunction with the A7 during production filming.

I recently bought a lens with PK mount. I tried to attach it to the Samsung GX10 (Pentax k10d), but it fails. Part of the design on the lens seems to interfere. Is there something to dismantle there? And as if interfering with the design details, this lens was successfully tested on the Pentax camera, as I understand it? Thanks to everyone who responded :)

  • gogen

The lens liked its sharpness, but very poor build quality. Two of these lenses passed through my hands, both of which were loose, with rubber bands deflecting. Although it was evident that they were not used often.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

There are different manufacturers of this lens design. And judging by the reviews, the quality is also different. Probably Tefnon will be a little different in terms of picture quality. But what is clear is that initially the idea itself was good and the lens design was thought out wisely.
