SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical

SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical is a versatile lens for full frame cameras. This review presents a model for Nikon cameras, but the lens was also produced for Sigma, Minolta, Pentax and Canon mounts. In 2005, the lens was upgraded to a 'DG' model - SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm 1: 2.8-4DG. The prefix that appears in the name of the lensDG'means that the lens has been redesigned specifically for use on DSLR cameras, while the review version was originally intended for film cameras. The new version can be quickly distinguished from the old by the signature Sigma velvet finish and the lack of 'Aspherical' lettering. Also, there is informationthat manual focus lens versions were released for Nikon AI, Pentax K, but, unfortunately, I could not find any photos of such a modification on the network.

SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical

SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical with hood

SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical - well made. The zoom ring is rubberized, but the focus ring is plastic.

Focusing speed, when used on Nikon cameras, is high (even very high!). It's nice that the focus is internal type.

During auto focus, the focus ring rotates and cannot be touched. The stroke of the ring is approximately 75 degrees. Most likely, with a small step of the focus ring, a high speed of auto focus is achieved. During manual focus, the focus ring may creak unpleasantly :(.

During zooming, the rear lens moves inside the lens, the lens trunk extends, but its sections do not rotate. The specimen, which I visited for the review, does not change the focal length spontaneously, under its own weight.

There is a focus distance scale in meters and feet. The minimum distance is only 50 cm. The number of marks on the focus scale is very scarce, and therefore this scale is more likely to give an understanding of which direction to rotate the focus ring;). On the scale of focal lengths, marks are indicated for 28, 35, 50, 70, 105 mm. IPIG scale no.

There is a mark on the case for quick installation of a small plastic bayonet hood. The hood can be installed back and forth, for transportation, while access to the focus ring is lost if a short focal length is set.

Diaphragm consists of eight petals. On covered diaphragms, you can see nuts in the bokeh.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it. It is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical

SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical has a very convenient range of focal lengths and a good maximum aperture... In general, the lens resembles its older brother - Sigma Zoom 24-135mmD 1: 2.8-4.5.

In terms of image quality, the lens from this review was not particularly pleased. First of all, SIGMA 28-105 / 2.8-4 suffers from noticeable distortion over the entire range of focal lengths, a small green / yellow hue, poor work in backlight and poor sharpness on open apertures. Rumor has it that image quality (primarily resolution) is highly dependent on a particular instance.

At 105 mm and F / 4, the background washes well with enough, as for a zoom lens, nice design.

If I needed a similar lens, I would rather pay attention to my relatives Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) or Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D.

For its money, the SIGMA ZOOM 28-105mm D 1: 2.8-4 Aspherical is quite good for replacing the native high-aperture lenses. But aside from the price reference, the SIGMA 28-105 / 2.8-4 is a pretty mediocre lens.

  • Anatoly

In general, I respect Sigma, although they are more expensive than Tamrons (in price commensurate with Nikkors), but when I choose between Nikkor and Sigma, I choose Sigma .. All the same, the colors and tones of Sigma are more pleasant to the eye - warmer and softer.
    Good review, thanks.
I looked at the prices for used ones - up to UAH 1800.
For a budget option, a very good option.

    • Anatoly

And there are no new ones on sale ..
I did not find anywhere to evaluate at least the price ..

  • zengarden

I liked the picture. Mediocre? it depends on what to compare; if with lenses for $ 1000-1500, then yes, probably ...

  • Nicholas

I have this lens (and it looks like me) and it gives out wild soap and distortion ... Only good for film.

    • anonym

"And it gives out wild soap and distortion." And what does it roll for film?)))

      • Nicholas

It is said that sho on the crop is unbearably open.
And yes, it rolls for the film.

        • anonym

more correct to say for ff.
Many croppers on the crop are very soapy.

          • Nicholas

In my case, “not more correct”, because I don't have digital FF, I can only vouch for the quality for FF on film :).

Moreover, there are at least a dozen half-format film cameras, so to speak, "crop".

  • Nicholas

Perhaps only on FF it works normally, on crop it is not suitable at all.

    • anonym

If the lens is soapy, a respected expert, then the result will be the same on crop, and on FF, and on the figure, and on the film.

      • Nicholas

Damn it, since I am a “respected expert” and you didn’t listen to my opinion. By the way, you are wrong - read reviews about him, even on foto.ru.
People have sores with this lens like me.

      • Lennaganci

Did you not know? The film smooths the distortion, this is a scientifically proven fact, bends simply in different directions, self-adjusting

  • Nicholas

Shot just on the Nikon F-801. Pronounced distortion of the house with the edge.

I bought a similar device only 3,8-5,6 when I used a Pentax K200. Ob'ktiv is satisfied not to rot, it’s normal for yourself, not mile, how to write about a new one, but to finish the sharp one on our magicians. Satisfied, the nepogana has replaced the kit with the fast-paced focal points.
Selling yogo and trochi pity for him.

  • Andrei

Tell me where can I buy one on Sony ??

    • Arkady Shapoval

Usually they sell at flea markets :)

  • 2017

alas, not a single portrait. How to evaluate a glass without them?

  • Kamil

Specially for AF, I bought myself a Nikon D70.
I have been looking at this Sigma for a long time - it costs $ 100 at the flea market. There is a Tamron AF 18-200mm F / 3.5-6.3 travel zoom, but this is not quite the same, I would like a lighter reporter. Or not to steam, and use fixes? There is a Yaga 35 autofocus. And manual 50, 58, 85, 135, 300. The use is exclusively unprofessional, but this is not a reason to shoot badly. Throw more portraits, please, otherwise it's only Roman, but in difficult conditions.

  • Maksim

In the catalogs, there really were checkmarks opposite the Ai-S and KPR mounts (but not FD, MD, OM and others). But I think that the check marks meant the compatibility of autofocus models with non-autofocus mounts. I have never seen a autofocus 28-105mm F2.8-4. And I do not know models that have versions for Ai-S and KPR, but would not have for FD.

  • Victor

I have been using this sigma for a long time. The glass is so-so. Of the merits - very fast and very accurate autofocus. And this is valuable for weddings and corporate events where the screwy people move quickly and chaotically. The glass is quite old and the more surprising is the autofocus accuracy. Recently I again tested the focus (all tests only on a fully open aperture, so that the wide DOF does not allow deceiving) from a series of 50 frames in AF-S at various distances 47 exactly in focus and 3 almost in focus, the error can be overlooked only in full permission. And in AF-C mode from 50 to point all 50. Most likely because the AF-C system does not turn off at all and is constantly adjusted to zero. The rest is not so much fun. Obviously unclear and low-contrast on an open hole, even in contrasting sunny weather. Strongly afraid of flare, even with a hood. The haze disappears and a good contrast appears only after 5.6 A, the working diaphragm with a decent quality is guaranteed to be 7.1. The trunk is constantly falling out. on subject shooting in the studio, there are some problems - a little camera down and hello ... The focus ring creaks and in the handbrake, when you need to move it literally half a millimeter, it jumps with a squeak farther than necessary and again on a new one ... True, there is one pleasant advantage, and again it is connected with focusing. In the manual focus mode, after focusing, take and change the focal length, then the focus in the focusing point will remain. This glass is also good in the combination of F105mm-D4 and back light. This sigma is clearly intended more for fast and responsive shooting. For creative work you need something different, you have to be smart with the lighting scheme for a long time, and after shooting - in the editor with contrast and color (my copy clearly tints the picture in blue) Therefore, on large series in corporate parties in order to at least somehow gain some time for processing I shoot on this glass with a light yellow filter constantly screwed on. You can play around with the selection of the color temperature, but the filter is more reliable and also as a protective glass.

Dear owners of this lens, but do not tell me which lens hood is suitable for this lens instead of my own? Because the lens went without a hood.

      770-03

      • Andrei

I meant an analog or from other lenses a suitable lens hood.

        • Paul

I rummaged the entire Internet, who has such a lens, also asked. Nobody knows anything.
The original is sold only one: on the Internet in Moscow.
Option to purchase: buy according to the size of the lens 72 on Aliexpress.

  • Paul

I have this lens on Canon.
Is it worth it to change to Sigma 17-50 f2.8?

    • 1Ds_mk3

Yes, it makes sense if you have a crop camera.

  • Paul

His colors are pleasant. I only have for Canon

  • Paul

Took him off a tripod at night
