FED overview 1: 2 F = 50m / m

According provided by FED lens 1: 2 F = 50m / m huge thanks to Denis '10111' Tkachenko.

FED 1: 2 F = 50mm

FED 1: 2 F = 50mm

FED 1: 2 F = 50m / m - an old and rare Soviet rangefinder lens, produced since 1937 and was used as a standard lens for FED-S cameras, which differed from the FED camera by the added additional shutter speed for 1/1000 s

The lens is solidly made, the body is completely made of metal. The main feature of the lens can be considered folding rim option. Such a frame is also called retractable or retractable, and another FED 1: 2 F = 50mm is called a tube lens. Such a mechanism can significantly reduce its size during transportation. To expand the lens, its barrel (frame) should be pulled out of the camera and fixed by rotating the lens barrel clockwise (when viewed from the front of the lens). To fold the lens back, it is enough to remove the fixation and push the lens back into the camera body. To fix near the rear lens of the lens there are three special protrusions of the frame.

It turns out that lenses with a parking system are far from a new invention :). And modern Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor and similar lenses with a transport system to reduce dimensions are just a new implementation of an old idea :).

Focusing is facilitated by a special tab called the 'eye'. The eyelet has a spring-loaded button that allows you to lock the lens when focusing at infinity. To remove the lens from 'infinity', just press the button and start rotating the focusing ring. During focusing, the front lens rotates and the barrel extends forward.

There are focus distance marks on the lens body with values of 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 7, 10, and 20 meters. The diaphragm ring is located in front of the lens and visually resembles a decorative metal ring located near the front lens. The iris control ring rotates smoothly. The scale of the values of the number F for our time does not have a completely standard set of numbers: F / 2, 2.6, 3.5, 4.5, 6.3, 9, 12.5, 18. There is also the depth of field scale for the same values of the number F. All the numbers on the scales have a small size and quite hard to read, especially the numbers on the depth of field scale.

The diaphragm consists of ten petals. Matt petals. On covered diaphragms, pretty even circles are obtained in the blur zone. The lens has no front thread for the use of light filters. The native front cover has no latches and just fits snugly on the lens barrel.

FED 1: 2 F = 50mm uses unlighted optics. Most likely, initially, the lenses of the lens did not have any glare, but due to the use of a special grade of glass, over time the lenses began to cast a 'rainbow', which can be seen in the images of the lens in this review. I wonder how much this rainbow affects the quality of the pictures.

FED 1: 2 F = 50mm

FED 1: 2 F = 50mm

Attention! Very important! When using the usual adapter M39-Sony NEX (aka L39-NEX), in the folded state, the lens catches with its back the matrix of Sony mirrorless cameras. This is due to the fact that the working segment M39 × 1 / 28,8 is noticeably longer than the working segment Sony E, which is only 18 mm.

Another feature: FED lens 1: 2 F = 50mm has a longer flange distance M39 × 1 equal to 28,8 mm. When working with a regular adapter M39-Sony NEX (or with any other adapter with M39-'Necessary System'), the distance scale will not work correctly, the lens will have an infinity 'flight', and the minimum focusing distance will be about two meters. My M39-Sony NEX adapter has an adjustment ring that can be used to compensate for the difference in flanges (the ring is attached with set screws).

Of course, there will be no correct pairing with a rangefinder on film rangefinder cameras with a M39 × 1 / 28,8 mounting thread. Therefore, the use of this lens on Zorkiy cameras and others like it will be difficult. In the vastness of the worldwide network, you can find information on remaking this lens.

To remove the lens from the camera, the easiest way is to set the minimum focusing distance, and then, using the stop in the 'eyelet', continue to rotate the lens in the same direction.

If you get the hang of it, then you can shoot with a lens on SLR cameras. On SLR cameras, you can move the lens barrel, thus performing a primitive focusing. But you need to be extremely careful not to push the tube too far and hook the mirror. Due to the significant backlash of the tube, the curvature of the image field can seriously walk :(.

The optical scheme consists of 6 elements in 4 groups. In general, for our time, the lens is very weak in terms of image quality: it has low contrast, a strong fear of backlight and side light, and terrible vignetting (especially on F / 2.0 and focusing in the area of infinity). Surprisingly at F / 2.0, the sharpness in the center of the frame is not bad, but at the edges and corners of the frame the sharpness does not return to normal at any value of F. JVI noticeably how the lens turns a little yellow. Usually high-aperture 'fixes' are interesting for their image quality from an artistic point of view, unfortunately in this regard, the FED 1: 2 F = 50mm did not please with anything special either.

Source files can download from this link (46 photos in '.ARW' and '.NEF' format, 1.07 GB). When focusing on the Sony a7, the picking clearly shows the curvature of the lens image field (the depth of field is in fact a hemisphere, which makes the corners and edges of the image out of focus).

I have a request. For perception, there are very few facial / height portraits when reviewing such lenses. Based on the subject, it is difficult to determine the distance of the object from the camera, and as a result, it becomes impossible to assume the actual depth of field and the degree of blur when shooting a person or other objects of a different size.

    • 10111

For perception, a lot of things are missing here ..

  • anonym

Hello, and if you put it on a nikon with m39 / m42 and m42 / nikon f, then how far can you focus?

    • Arkady Shapoval

When unfolded, about 20 cm from the focal plane, if you hide the tube - about 70 cm (do not touch the main mirror).

  • Yarkiya

    -Values not!
    -Got it ...

assembly of the case for centuries ... canons and nikons never dreamed of ... but the shutter does not even work out the 70th part of the resource. I myself have a FED-3 - the car is fire, the aperture ring freezes in the cold - the result is that while you try to twist, the lens is unscrewed, nothing is visible in the small viewfinder - did you really get into focus at 2,8 or not ... and most of all, the rag shutter with horizontal broaching - it is rubbed into holes and the film shines ... all similar cameras and their later models have their own cost and adequate operation of the units and cosmic form

    • 10111

In principle, the concept of “resource” is hardly applicable to curtain shutters. Moreover, precisely because they are practically eternal. Nothing in them is overwritten to holes, but in cheap cameras there can be problems with the workmanship. Everything else is treated with banal CLA, because major diseases only from age.

      • Ingvard

I remember that the rubberized curtains of my FED-5 quickly froze in the conditions of our harsh Siberia, and the shutter began to “glitch”, incorrectly working out the shutter speed and seizing. As a result, we “lost” him, the shutter of my FED once died. My friend, the happy owner of the old Kiev-4A, whose shutter curtains were metal, had fewer such problems.

        • 10111

This is a problem of old grease and dirt, not curtains. At -20 I shot both Leika and Kiev-60 - there were no problems at all. The cameras were frozen through.

      • Denis

Are the curtain fabric closures everlasting? One friend of mine, in the Soviet years, shocked several Zenits with active photography (it was necessary for work), they worked out completely nonsense compared to modern DSLRs. I myself have a "Sharp" with a dead bolt. And yet, yes, holes in the tissue appear over time. For most, these cameras are alive only because the film was not conducive to shooting a large number of frames.

        • 10111

Firstly, Zenit is a primitive camera with low quality workmanship. Secondly, such gates are really very long-lived. Back in 1958, Nikon's curtain shutter issued 100 guaranteed operations. And still, these cameras work as before. As for curtains and ribbons, then in such gates it is an expendable material.

  • Franz

for such a "venerable age" it is very good ...

  • Caelwyn

Well, if such heat has already gone, then I will add my five cents. It is better to take Zorkiy-4, it has a large and bright viewfinder, shutter speeds of 1-1 / 1000 (approximately), and all lengthy lenses fit under the M39. If the shutter curtains are jammed and shining, then they can be replaced with the same ones extracted from later Zeniths of the same factory.

    • 10111

      Better Kiev, much better)

      • Ingvard

        I will support.

      • Oleg R

        I agree!!!

  • Robot1524

Good afternoon. You have no experience in remaking lenses from M42 to infinity for use on the Nikon system?

  • Igor

    A nice drawing

    • Andy lem

This is the whole Shapoval: The results are a bullshit lens (I exaggerate this;)), the pictures are a bomb.
Well, Paganini, according to legend, played on one string.
The real Master does not interfere. ;)
Threat. Arkady, thank you, I never tire of recommending your blog!

  • Dmitry

Uv. Arkady, all pre-war lenses are uncorrected for color. I shot a lot of pre-war Leikas with Leikov elmars, summers. The best result is BW Kodak T-max film. 80 years old is not needed in color.

  • Ivan Wolverine

it is curious that there was a small series of such FEDs with this lens and reduced noise of the camera shutter .... used in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and in the MGB / KGB system….

  • Arthur

I've only had this lens for a few days, but despite the low contrast, I can tell right away that it's an artistic tool. He has his own drawing, character, he seems to recreate the atmosphere of his era.
It was not possible to test especially - winter - but I took a couple of pictures:

  • Eugene

    Hello!
And where to get the same adapter as yours so that you can adjust its length? Do not share the link?

  • a guest

Sorry, I am a guest, sometimes I read reviews from this site, but (!), Every time I see completely incorrect tests. Let me explain: testing lenses originally made for photography on film using digital cameras is not just a wrong decision, but a completely illiterate and extremely incompetent decision. Plus, all tests are done in macro mode (like) (!). This is another gross mistake, because old Soviet lenses for rangefinder cameras were never made as lenses for shooting in macro mode. If the lens, by the manufacturer, was designed, manufactured, tested by tests for filming using photographic films, then modern tests should be shown exactly film, but not digital.
Yes, many will object or ask, why not shoot digital? You can shoot, it will not make anyone worse, but in this case the only answer remains: all these lenses can be perceived by you as - you like, you don't like it, that's all. In conclusion, if someone is not in the know, I will explain that these old Soviet lenses were made not just taking into account shooting on photographic film, but strictly for black and white photographic films, because at that time there were no colored films in the USSR. For a correct understanding of the matter, before accepting my opinion or not accepting, real tests should be done with the data of old Soviet rangefinder lenses and MACRO lenses, well, let not specifically modern ones, but at least the 80s, 90s, and, strictly without any corrections, everything is as it is, right after the shooting. Moreover, photographic film and a digital matrix have completely and radically different ways of image formation, therefore, lenses released for filming on photographic film will not have such a result when used on digital cameras, and vice versa.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can take this material as a story about the capabilities of the old lens on new cameras. Also, I have a variety of pictures in my review, not just "macro".
About numbers and tape. Look what business - a huge, huge, outrageous number of lenses, for example, for autofocus systems, were originally developed for film, but then they were used with the same success on digital cameras and no one really bothered about the fact that they were just about film ... If you want to be specific, then, for example, Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D was developed for film in 1997, like a huge number of lenses of that time. And it is relevant to this day for any number. Is there something to think about?

      • Rodion

        +1

  • Anna

Good afternoon, how do you focus on distant objects?)
I can only take a macro, and focus cannot be done at medium distances, because the lens breaks the glass.
The macro ring does not help, the focus in the distance does not appear.
    Help?

    • Felix

Oh, these girls ... :) If only they would say ... what are you trying to hook him to?

    • Michael

And what does “the lens beats glass” mean?

      • Rodion

        Mirror, apparently))

  • Igor

You are incredibly lucky, because judging by the number, this is one of the last lenses released before the evacuation of the plant. There are still early 24xxx lenses with blue galvanized petals.

  • Artem

So, the difference in focal lengths should be compensated for by the adapter, and, in this case, everything should be beautifully formed, or am I mistaken? Why doesn't this trick work?

Or, is it possible to change the embedding depth there?

    Interesting accessory for fuji x-pro

  • Alexander Kraus

Thank you for this detailed review of this rare lens. There is only little information about it in the web and hardly anybody has used it on a modern camera. I recently bought a FED-S with the 2.0/50mm in excellent condition and attached the lens to my Sony A9 to take pictures. The flange distance of my sample is around 28.4mm and so I had to grind down the adapter bit in order to be able to focus to infinity. Here are some pictures I took: https://flic.kr/ps/34qjHV
I must say I was positively surprised by its performance! For sure it is not up to modern standards, but it is absolutely usable and almost on the same level as the Leitz Summar.
I think your sample has a separated front element (rainbow colors!) and therefore doesn't give the full performance anymore.

  • Igor

Artistic lens. Not a skin test result, an aspect is considered.

    • B. R. P.

The object itself is the most striking. All art is in our heads, eyes, hearts.
