Overview of HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC

Radozhiv already has a review of a similar lens - HELIOS-81 2/50 AUTOMATIC MACHINEbut it turns out there are some differences between the '2/50' and '2/53' versions.

HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC MACHINE

HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC MACHINE

Difference between HELIOS-81 2/50 AUTOMATIC MACHINE and HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC (from this review):

  1. Different markings: '2/50'and' 2/53 '. In fact, the real focal length of the lenses is the same, and is approximately equal to 52 mm. Different markings are nothing more than the whims of the manufacturer.
  2. Different drawing of lines of depth of field. Version '2/50'all lines are straight, on the' 2/53 'version the DOF lines for F / 8 and F / 22 are chamfered.
  3. Different markings on the focus distance scale.
  4. Different minimum focusing distance... Version '2/50'has an MDF of 50 cm, while the' 2/53 'version of the MDF is much shorter at only 36 cm.
  5. Different stroke of the focus ring... Version '2/50'the ring rotates 270 degrees, while the' 2/53 'version rotates 320 degrees.
  6. Most likely versions'2/50'are older than' 2/53 '(just my guess from the serial numbers).

Sorry that u '2/50'that the' 2/53 'has a backlash focusing ring. In addition, I noticed a backlash in the focusing ring of all Kiev-Avtomat mount lenses that passed through my hands. Everything else '2/50'and' 2/53 'are very similar to each other.

And some photos of the lens itself:

HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC and home-made adapter for Sony E mount

Like version '2/50', HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC is afraid of flares and does not work well in side and backlight.

Source files can download from this link (36 photos in '.ARW' format, 742 MB). In the gallery all the photos are untreated, the usual smaller on-camera JPEG. Some of the photos were taken in the 'Shooting with APS-C size' mode. Almost all photos were shot on a closed aperture. I used a lens on a Sony a7 camera (ILCE-7) with a makeshift adapter. It’s easy to make such an adapter myself, as I did, it is described in the review JUPITER-11 4/135 AUTOMATIC.

The most complete list of all modifications of the lens' HELIOS-81 ′ can be found in the review MS HELIOS-81H 2/50.

HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMAT from HELIOS-81 2/50 AUTOMATED primarily differs in different MDF and focusing ring travel. The rest of the lenses are identical. Unfortunately, the picture and assembly of 'AUTOMATS' loses to the multi-coated MS Helios-81H 2/50.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

  • Grandfather Fedor

"... does not work well in side and backlighting." Yes, judging by the photo, direct light is generally contraindicated. True, this "haze" can be specially used.

  • anonym

Tell me, and the windows from the machine will become a regular 81N ???

    • Alexander

And what are the bad relatives of 81N?
glass will become 100%, the diaphragm will also become, but it will work on a turn, the petals are flipped upside down and put on a turn (you’ll correctly) is not technically possible, I don’t know the only difference between 50mm and 53mm, I didn’t measure it, but from 50 to 50 and from 53 to 53 do not even doubt it.

      • anonym

Yes, native 81n are good, just bought 81n with a bursted rear lens, so I ask)

        • anonym

At first it was necessary to ask, and then buy.81N in bulk and at an affordable price, and buying with a bursted lens is strange like that, if you only accept it as a gift.

          • anonym

Yes, I bought it for 100 UAH. The money seems to be not so big, but it’s still insulting now and I want to put glass from the machine in it.

            • Alexander

Look for a 50mm submachine gun and you will succeed, N is basically 50mm, 53 Nkis are less common, but MKIs are more frequent in turnover.

              • anonym

                Thank you very much ))

    • anonym

I took the whole lens block from the machine and rearranged the old specimen (from Kiev81) into the Helios 17 case. I selected an adjustment ring from two that was thinner.

  • Victor

So the Russians have resumed some kind of line with mounts for Cannon and Nikon. Tsna, however, is not modest enough to enter the market. -This is not politics - this is optics. /
    Looking for a link?

    • 10111

You have outdated information. All optical enterprises are now under the control of the Schwabe holding, KMZ has its own history there.

Only the commentator piled up this - added gray hair. Good idea, but implementation ???

    • Jury

the implementation is lame, as always. Really 85 1,4 - it may be a good lens, it looks even very beautiful, but “without a jumping aperture” :) It was possible to put a chip - even a simple Dandelion. Probably they did not agree with Lushnikov. If Arkady allows, I will write that this “does not buzz and does not climb in the ass” (this is on the topic of lame implementation in Soviet devices :))

      • Grandfather Fedor

dandelion is optional. As for the lame implementation, it wouldn’t be bad at first to poyuzat, mabud and not lame (I want to believe).

        • Jury

To do in 2015 a lens “for Nikon mount” (proudly declaring this) and without a jump rope is a lame implementation. All old manual import Nikon lenses (not native, but from third-party manufacturers) that I have seen had a jumping aperture.

          • Grandfather Fedor

Yuri, it would be demanded that you would be a skipping rope. I think they will grope the market with its demand and organize. Personally, I care more about the quality of the glasses, and the reliability of the design. At least they can compete in Samyang.
BUT! need to try and compare.

            • The Hedgehog

What does it mean - “would be in demand”? Why “feel” the market? To understand whether you need a jump rope? Can she bother anyone? Or maybe her device greatly increases the cost?

            • Oleg

to Grandpa Fyodor: and Samyang has been putting on a jump rope and a chip for a long time ...

              • Grandfather Fedor

Oleg, well, for that matter, I don’t need a jump on a canon. Solve your problems yourself.

              • The Hedgehog

for Grandpa Fyodor. So maybe you don't need a camera either? Also unnecessary problems ...

  • Caelwyn

KMZ since 2013 produces Mir-20M, Helios 40-2 and Telenitar 2,8 / 135 with mounts for Nikon and Kenon. True, you can buy them in three places and sometimes not always, and their prices are not much lower than similar optics from Nikon and Kenon.

    • Dmitriy

World-20m only for carving. About Telezenitar with a bayonet mount Canon also never heard.

  • 10111

By the way, this is not the first time I have come across proof that a local apocalypse happened at the Arsenal at the turn of the 70s-80s and the quality of products fell below the plinth. The rotten riveted Kiev-17 still pleases with crooked joints and wild backlashes ...

  • alexey_laa

And why in the first photo (with the metro train) the sky is so bright and all the details merged? The Sony a7 sensor has a din. diap. 14,2 EV, and the camera has a rating of 90 out of 100 on dxomark.com

    • serega

this is all due to rounding. not actually 14,2, but 14,19513456. so, apparently, these shares were not enough ... :).

    • Jury

On the ditch of this photo you can reduce the exposure of the sky by 4 stops and details will appear: the sky in gray clouds, brown color of tree branches, yellow domes on the church. With DD, everything is in order there :)

  • Dmitriy

May God give you health and mental strength Arkady, to survive all this. Stay professional and human. Good luck to you and your family

  • MM

    Good afternoon.
I have 81n but someone “cleaned” the external lens and the glass with bubbles. I got an automatic machine for 81 kopecks and everything is 100% clean. Does it make sense to change the glass from 81a to the 81n building? Or is it dangerous for me to dismantle it?

    • Oleg R

Here ... Disassembly is dangerous and difficult! I sent my Kaleinar-5n, on this occasion, sent by mail to a specialist in Moscow. He cleaned it. I was afraid….

    • anonym

The main thing is to have patience and the necessary materials and knowledge) there is nothing complicated) try and you will succeed)

      • Oleg R

I never found instructions on how to disassemble Kalainar on the Internet…. I would have looked, maybe I would have understood how. Recently I watched a video on how to disassemble and repair a car generator. Everything. I did it myself. A lens is a delicate matter!

    • Alexander

If one person has assembled, then the other one will be able to disassemble forever, here is the problem to reassemble, if you take care of disassembling it, pay attention when assembling the diaphragm on the control rod, you can just collapse it, as I understand it, you want to change the front lens, you have to take out the entire lens block.

  • Oleg R

In the photo where you can see the closed diaphragm, the very shape of the oval is not even in geometry. On my Helios-81N from Kiev-19, exactly the same unequal hole shape !!! It does not affect the quality of the picture, but on my other lenses, this is no longer observed. It is somehow clumsily executed….

    • Lynx

because it is not an oval initially.

  • Denis

Metro train) I remembered this station when I was in Kiev 1.5 years ago)

  • Sergei

Neither the assembly nor the picture of the Helios 81/53 lens is inferior to the MC Helios-81N in the Helios-81 2/53 lens you are testing, which in the fourth photo looks like some kind of mold on the rear lens, hence the disadvantages of the "pictures", and here lens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The lens of the serge is worn. It is very bad that people find the HELIOS-81 2/53 AUTOMATIC as good as the Helios-81N.

      • Sergei

The rear lens of the lens should especially be whole and clean, no scratches and scuffs, otherwise it won’t work out well. Why is it bad to consider the Helios machine as good as some other Helios if I get excellent pictures with the lens? With a Helios-81 2/53 lens, I shot a machine with a Kiev camera 15 TEE it is very sharp. I looked at the pictures taken on Helios-81 N - everything is loose, collapsed, lacks contrast, maybe the photographer is to blame?

        • Arkady Shapoval

The photographer is always in charge. But this does not change the matter. + Consider the variation in quality and enlightenment.

  • Ivan

The picture does not lose anything with the Nikon mount, why do you have such conclusions.

  • Pokekmon

Guys, on Avito I found a homemade product:
    "Autofocus Helios-81 on Canon" - 25.000 rubles (~ 400 $)
“The only copy of the autofocus lens Helios-81 for Canon cameras is on sale.
This is a full lens with a working aperture.
Made on the basis of the "fifty dollars" Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II.
Canon inherited autofocus and controlled aperture. From Helios-81 - a delightful pattern, color reproduction and inimitable swirling bokeh.
This lens ends a series of conversions from manual lenses to autofocus lenses for free sale. ”

    • Denis

      not surprising
I saw on the Internet a hybrid of Helios and 18-55 from Nikon, and 50mm F / 1.8G from Nikon ...
moreover, the same person did this, argued that the alteration is simple :)

    • Denis

and on the examples from your ad, by the way, you can see what is the “correct” color rendition of helios

  • Pokekmon

Good afternoon, tell me what kind of adapter is needed from Helios 81 2 / 53automat to canon eos 600d. Thanks in advance for your reply

    • Michael

      There are no such

    • Trueash

All "automatic machines" cannot be used without more or less serious plumbing work, because they have their own bayonet and there is no diaphragm drive ring. Again, the flange is like Canon's, 44 mm. There is no room for the adapter.
Unless you take out the lenses and fit in the body of some native lens that has lost its own :)

  • Pto

    Photos like from a phone

  • Sebastian

    Hi

How do i manually control the aperture on this lens !

    Sebastian

    • Rodion

Hi! The lens mount should be removed and replaced for mount that will be suitable for you camera. While mount replacing, find the aperture control lever located next to the rear lens and try to make it accessible by using your own parts, then install new mount to lens. In this way you will get Helios-81 Avtomat lens with aprture control.
