Review Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8

The Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 is an old 2.5x full-frame zoom lens with a constant f / 2.8 maximum aperture.

History

Sigma has the largest family tree of universal high-aperture zoom lenses. It is sometimes very difficult to distinguish one model from another, as well as find information on a particular modification.

Below are listed all such lenses in chronological order of their publication, the names are indicated according to the spelling on the lens housing or near the front lens, and the optical design and the number of special elements are indicated:

  1. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom, 13/10 [0], since May 1992, aka Vivitar Series 1 28-70/2.8 VMC
  2. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX Ashperical [+ -D], 15/12 [2 ASP], from the end 1998
  3. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX aspherical DF [+ -D], 15/12 [2 ASP], since February 2001
  4. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG aspherical [+ -D], [DF] 14/13 [3 ASP, 2 SLD], since February 2001
  5. Sigma 24-60mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG [+ -D], 16/15 [4 ASP, 2 SLD], several subversions, since May 2004
  6. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG Macro [+ -D], 14/13, [3 ASP, 2 SLD], since September 2004
  7. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG [+ -D], 14/12 [4 ASP, 2 SLD] since September 2004
  8. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM, 14/12 [3 ASP, 1 ELD, 2 SLD], since September 2008
  9. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG OS A, 19/14 [4 ASP, 3 SLD], since February 2017
  10. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG DN A, 19/15 [3 ASP, 2 SLD, 6 FLD], since November 2019
  11. Sigma 28-70 mm 1:2.8 DG DN C, 16/12 [3 ASP, 2 SLD, 2 FLD], from February 2021

Separately, you can still identify almost universal:

  1. Sigma 20-40mm Zoom 1: 2.8 EX DG aspherical IF [+-D], 17/13 [2 ASP], since August 2001
  2. Sigma 24-35mm 1:2 DG A, 18/13 [1 ASP, 7 SLD, 1 FLD, 1 ASP SLD], since June 2015

Designations in the names of the lenses:

  • EX (EXcellent) - the highest quality professional lens
  • DG - the lens is designed for full-frame SLR digital cameras
  • DN - lens designed for mirrorless digital cameras
  • Df (Dual Focus) - a focusing system for convenient work with the focusing ring (DF is written near the front lens, or on the box / instruction)
  • IF (Iinternal Focusing) - internal focus
  • aspherical (ASP) - the presence of aspherical elements in the optical scheme
  • SLD (Special Low Dispersion) - special low dispersion elements in the optical scheme
  • FLD - (Fluorite-like Low Dispersion) - special low-disperse elements in the optical scheme with characteristics close to fluorite
  • ASP SLD (ASPherical Special Low Dispersion) - special elements that are simultaneously aspherical and low dispersion
  • ZOOM - zoom lens, the presence of zoom
  • HSM (Hyper Sabout nothing Motor) - ultrasonic focusing motor
  • OS (Optical Stabilizer) - built-in optical image stabilizer
  • A (Art) - Sigma Art Premium Lens Range
  • С (Ccontemporary) - a line of modern lenses with a good price / quality ratio
  • D - a letter in the name of the lens, which was placed only on some lenses for Nikon F cameras (analogue 'Nikon D') and Sony / Minolta (because the name of the lenses from the list is [plus or minus D]). Typically, the letter 'D' is located near the focal length indicated on the case, such as 20-40mmD, 24-60mmD, 24-70mmD, 28-70mmD)

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 with maximum trunk length (28 mm focal length and focusing on MDF)

The Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 has presumably been in production since early 1992. The build feels good to the touch. The zoom and zoom ring are rubberized. During zooming, you can see how the rear lens drives into the lens, and the insides near the rear lens are covered with black velor, most likely to absorb dust. The bayonet and the thread for the front filter are metal. The zoom ring is too close to the camera mount and not very comfortable to rotate.

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8, rear view

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8, rear view

The auto focus speed of the Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 is fast. During focusing, the front lens rotates and extends forward :(.

Video review can be viewed at my youtube channel:

The focus ring rotates during autofocus and must not be touched. There is a window with a focusing distance in meters and feet. The DOF scale is indicated for the wide-angle range (28 mm, letter 'w') for F / 16 only, and for the tele-range (70 mm, letter 't') for F / 22 only. There are two 'R' marks for infrared operation (Tele and Wide). The minimum focusing distance is 50 cm. The Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 uses large 72mm filters. The focusing ring rotates only 90 degrees.

During a change in focal length, the trunk of the lens travels in waves - it lengthens, then it shortens. It's funny that the maximum trunk length is at 28 mm of focal length, while at 70 mm the trunk only slightly moves forward. The most compact size of the lens has a 60 mm focal length. When you change the focal length, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens moves inside the lens.

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 with a hood

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 with a hood

The lens hood is not attached to the lens trunk, but to the mounts located near the focusing ring. Thus, with the hood installed, the change in trunk length is imperceptible. And also - this allows you to use a sufficiently high hood and not get vignetting at 28 mm focal length. This opportunity appeared precisely due to the fact that the maximum length of the lens trunk is available at 28 mm focal length. A similar principle of operation of the hood can be found in Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-70mm 1: 2.8 L USM.

The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this case, it will completely block access to the focus ring, regardless of the set focal length.

The diaphragm consists of nine petals, but when closed, they form a non-circular hole and as a result, in the blur zone, polyhedra can be obtained (example on f / 4) From bright light sources you can achieve the effect of 19 ray star (example on f / 14).

Features for Nikon Cameras.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras with a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will focus automatically:

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount, which puts the camera itself in manual focus mode.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.

For Nikon cameras, the lens is an analog FX, AF, D the lens. Funny but such an ancient lens already knows how to transmit focus distance values into the camera. When shooting with your hands, there should not be any special problems, since the big aperture lens allows short excerpts at low values ISO.

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Lens Case

Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Lens Case

The lens is very weak at f / 2.8. Sharpness at open apertures is poor due to chromatic and spherical aberrations. If you close the aperture to F / 4, then the image is normalized. Strong vignetting is noticeable at 28mm and f / 2.8. In the backlight, the amount of glare is also not happy. The lens suffers from distortion a little and, in general, does not surprise with anything special.

True, still the ability to use F / 2.8 is sometimes much more important than sharpness. F / 2.8 allows you to use short excerpts and protect yourself from movement during handheld shooting. I think it’s better to get a not-so-sharp shot, but no blur due to shake, than just a blurry shot. Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 can be an inexpensive lens for simple shooting and does not really pretend to be the main lens in the photographer’s backpack.

Results

The Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1: 2.8 is old and, in terms of image quality at F / 2.8, a weak lens. Interesting for its fast focusing, constant maximum aperture F / 2.8 and low price. If you are looking for such an inexpensive lens, I advise you to look away Tamron AF 28-75mm 1: 2.8 SP XR Di LD.

Sigma sigma strife. In the 90s and partly 00s, Sigma suffered from poor quality and problems. Plus, do not forget that the glasses were produced for completely different requirements - then there were no digital cameras at all, such glass would have looked quite good on film. Modern Sigma is a completely different story. Not only is it not inferior to the "native" glass, but also often surpasses them.

  • Dmitriy

It is bad and very bad that the old Sigmas of the 90s under Canon on digital cameras do not work - only on an open aperture, when trying to close an error pops up. Tested with this lens and a couple more different ones. But since the end of the 80s everything is fine, only the exposure metering lies ...

    • Dmitriy

Since the late 90s. A typo has left.

  • Alexander Malyaev

I also read that on the old Sigma (including the survey one) - the AF is completely in trouble.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It was this instance on my cameras that was not particularly capricious in focusing accuracy.

      On new too

  • Nikonist

This Sigma has a cool case, not like velvet bags with laces from Nikon.

    • Alexander

The cover is very nice, but not practical and will take up a lot of space.

  • anonym

Well, when there is nothing to surprise, because they gave me a beautiful wrapper, Nikon has good optics, but I’ll put it in a hundred personally anyway

  • Arkady Shapoval

Will be. Exclusive reviews of rangefinders (like the non-retrofocus Jupiter-12) are planned on a full-format mirrorless mirror, for which funds are being raised.

  • Alexander

Good afternoon Arkady! Help advice. I want to buy Sigma 10-20 f4-5,6 on the EOS 100D, since I like to photograph abandoned casts, tell me your opinion on this glass, otherwise I did not find a review on it. Thank you in advance!

And if you can reverse the technical Yu-12, without a diaphragm in a strange case like a piece of pipe

  • Peter the Great

but how will you put Ju-12 on Sonya. He has a ZFO - 7.53mm. Only if you deeply enter it, right up to the matrix, into its bayonet.

    • Roderick

Yes, put the music stand in the matrix on the bayonet itself.

    • Roderick

And, moving the music stand back and forth, align it.

  • Vladimir

I used this lens in conjunction with the d1,5 for 700 years. Bought specifically for vacation trips for 6000 r at that time $ 150, for tasks and pictures "me and a palm tree" is quite suitable, the main thing is to adapt to them and you can get quite good shots. Most of all I was surprised by the lack of soap on the edges of the frame on the d700, which is what all cheap zooms sin about. I advise you to wear a good polarizer on the Lens and never take any otduda. This improves the quality of the picture several times, since the glass is rather capricious to the backlight loss of contrast in the side and counter set.
When processing lightroom, you need to twist the “black” slider, that is, “black” to the left quite strongly, and then, the picture comes to life before our eyes, and it also does not hurt to set the camera profile to “landscape”. In general, and in general, you can squeeze not bad shots from the lens, but you need to adapt,
By the way, I changed it to 28 105mm af d 3,5-4,5 nikon, it’s much easier to get a good picture, it’s weakly afraid of the counter light and the macro function 1k2 is quite suitable
When choosing between them, I would have taken it if I had been a couple thousand more expensive.

  • Pokekmon

2 Vladimir: Thank you so much for the feedback and the pictures and for accurately and briefly describing the problems of this glass.
Now I look at zooms on Avito and these Sigma are sold in a medium-tolerant state for 8-10 thousand rubles, i.e. for about the same price as Nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5D.
In general, there is something to think about.

  • Pokekmon

I could not resist and bought this glass for 8 thousand rubles. Glass got almost new, almost without any signs of use, in a complete set. In the box, even the smell of the skin remained. I will test.

  • Pokekmon

Under FF 2.8, the lens is inedible at all.
At 4.0 more or less. You can take a picture of the subject, but not the landscape.
The lens is VERY scared of back and side light.
Even with a polarizer and a hood with a hard backlight on, the picture blurred on the hole closed to 9.0. For comparison - Nikkor 35-105 / 3.5-4.5 holds the counter better, also with the hood and polarizing on.
Sigma warms up the picture pleasantly - my copy takes the BB to yellow-orange tones.
Autumn is good to take a picture. But the lens also loves light - the main thing is not to turn the trunk towards the sun.
On covered diaphragms in sunny weather, in the absence of bright light sources in the frame, very nice three-dimensional pictures are obtained.
In cloudy autumn weather, BB leads to orange-dark brown tones. It turns out a psychedelic.
If you take a picture of the landscape, it is recommended to press the aperture to 8-9.
Focusing is really fast. But there are misses in the open. Better not to trust this glass.
In this way, 3 photos went to back focus.
I aimed at the head of the statue - af reported that I had "hit", and in the photo - hell would be there. It turned out offensively.
Another point on some focal points with open apertures is that the upper left corner is more soapy than the others. I have not figured it out yet and this moment has not been caught to the end.
I got the glass with a smart wardrobe trunk, box and even instructions. The lens itself is clean and seems to have been barely used. Another nuance - in humid autumn weather, when it is very damp, cold and windy, the rubber zoom ring on the glass turns noticeably tight.
In short, a very peculiar glass, to which you need to find an approach or get rid of it.
Those. love or hate. I have a weakness for the Sigma and can not help myself.
To make money or simply difficult situations where you must fully trust the glass, hoping that it will not fail, it’s better to choose something else.

  • Pokekmon

"It's funny, but such an ancient lens already knows how to transmit focusing distance values to the camera."
Arkady, this glass does not convey anything to me ...
I can even send you NEF or make a screen from ShowEXIF.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      So there are subversions

      • ALEXANDER

You can ask a question: What is better to buy a fast lens with a fixed focal length or with a variable focal length, precisely for photographing a large number of people at the same time without an autoflash / it is possible with a flash / ??? For example, a wedding or workers to photograph 50 people at work?

        • Arkady Shapoval

          under which camera?

        • Victor

The answer is obvious - suitable for the viewing angle.

In general - when you need a moderately wide angle with aperture ratio - 24 / 1.4

  • Pokekmon

With this glass, matrix metering is often mistaken by about +/- 0.3-0.7EV.
Moreover, even when photographing the same scene with a difference of a couple of minutes with constant lighting. Those. one series is slightly underexposed and the other is slightly overexposed. In the dark, it's always like this - a flight-under-flight, but there is no bull's-eye. Let me remind you that I have a NON D version and even the case is different in color.
And yet - in contrast to the day, when glass is panicky afraid of the sun even with a polaric and a diaphragm covered up to 10, it is not sausage at night from a heap of bright point light sources - for example, garlands and lanterns in the park. It's nice. The picture is soft and warm, which is also generally good. If I switch to D750 / D800E, it will be curious to look at the pictures. Even if the soap is okay, resizing to 16-18MP will save you.

  • Pokemon

I sold this lens after one of the shootings of a car for a friend. It was a pity to sell, because the lens was like new, but lacked sharpness up to 5-5.6. At full frame, he is soapy. Took 35-70 / 2.8D replacements in good condition. I was amazed at the sharpness even at 2.8.
True, now with this Nikkor you will no longer go out in winter or take a walk in rainy weather like with Sigma. There is paranoia about the fungus / mold - the fear that you cannot save the lens with this joy ...
My Sigma still had a luxurious case :)
As in the review, only stitched with black threads. I should have left it for 35-70: ')

    - when I bought the D-600 for shooting with fixes, I bought a Nikor 28-80 / 3,3-5,6G zoom for a cheap price, which quite decently shot 28mm landscapes and did good portraits at 70mm, but then they offered this for 20 bucks Sigma 28-70 / 2,8 is completely out of order, but with new glasses - I repaired and tried to use instead of a plastic Nikor - Sigma has its own, sigma drawing, which I like when shooting some subjects ...

The main disadvantage of Sigma is, indeed, 2,8 is almost not working and it is better to cover up to 4.

    70mm portrait - 5,6 aperture

You can ask a question: What is better to buy a fast lens with a fixed focal length or with a variable focal length, precisely for photographing a large number of people at the same time without an autoflash / it is possible with a flash / ??? For example, a wedding or workers to photograph 50 people at work?

Well it's 24-28mm and not necessarily fast
