Pentax K200D Review

Review of Pentax K200D. The camera was available in black and silver colors.

The Pentax K200D is a cute old hobby digital SLR camera that was introduced in January 2008.

The camera is interesting for its image stabilization system, which allows you to use it with any lens, even manual :). Also, K200D has a dust removal function that can be programmed to turn on the camera and which allows you to keep the matrix clean. When this function is activated, the camera shudders significantly and makes a characteristic sound, which at first can even frighten. And the camera has a dust and water tight rugged case :).

K200D uses an additional monochrome display, but, in my opinion, it is not functional enough. The secondary display cannot quickly configure basic camera settings, such as white balance, image quality, ISO value, shooting mode, etc. And the additional display does not have an auxiliary backlight, which is sometimes very upsetting. Thus, all settings have to be made through the main display of the camera using the menu or the 'FN' button. The main display is large enough at 2.7 inches and 230.000 pixels.

Pentax K200D

Pentax K200D

At the heart of the Pentax K200D is a 10 MP CCD-type sensor, which can create images with a maximum size of 3872 X 2592. The same sensor is carried on board the cameras Pentax K10D and Pentax Km. Most likely, the same sensor can be found on other cameras, such as Nikon D80, D40x, D60, D3000, D200as well as the Sony A100, A200, A230, A300, A330 and Samsung GX-10 cameras. Actually, Sony also stamped the matrix data. If you go deep, the camera data is based on the sensor Sony ICX493AQA, in that time Nikon D200 uses a slightly modified version - Sony ICX483AQA with an increased number of connectors for reading data (proof link). Of course, the fact that cameras use the same sensors does not guarantee the same image quality, since each camera has its own signal processing algorithm and possibly different AA filters. But on my own I will add that the picture with the Pentax K200D is like two drops of water similar to the picture Nikon D80 и D40x.

The Pentax K200D can use ISO from 100 to 1600 units without the ability to expand its range. ISO can be changed in thirds of a stop. The camera has an automatic ISO control function, for this function you can set the maximum ISO threshold, and the camera calculates the maximum shutter speed depending on the focal length of the lens. When you turn on the D-Range function, the ISO range is narrowed to 200-1600 units. At high ISOs, the camera is very weak. It's funny that the previous model, the K100D, had a higher maximum ISO threshold of 3200. Nevertheless, the old CCD matrix has its own unique charm, which I wrote about in the review Nikon D40x.

Pentax K200D

Pentax K200D

The K200D is not a very fast camera, it can shoot at a maximum speed of 2.8 frames per second (I practically did not feel any difference between 3 fps and 2.8 fps).

If you turn off additional functions such as 'Long exposure noise reduction', 'High ISO sensitivity noise reduction', 'D-Range', then the following is placed in the buffer:

  • 4 frames in PEF format
  • 4 frames in DNG format
  • 5-6 frames in JPEG, 10M, maximum quality
  • 4 frames in RAW format (PEF or DNG) + JPEG

If you enable all additional functions, then in frame buffer fits:

  • 4 frames in PEF format
  • 4 frames in DNG format
  • 4 frames in JPEG, 10M, maximum quality
  • 3 frames in RAW format (PEF or DNG) + JPEG

As it turned out, frame buffer very small, buffer-like on a lot of amateur cameras.

High ISO noise reduction can be configured to work at different intensities. At ISO 1600, with the 'hard' value selected, the camera does overwhelm the image details.

Pentax K200D

Pentax K200D Battery Compartment

Pentax K200D uses an 11-point focusing system based on the Safox VIII sensor, which can also be found on a huge number of other cameras: K100D, K100D Super, K110D, K10D, K20D, Kx, * ist DS2, * ist DS, * ist D. work with the lens SMC Pentax-DA 1: 3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL the focusing system worked pretty well, and the camera was pretty good too JVI with 96% frame coverage and 0.85X magnification based on the pentazerkal.

Some features of the Pentax K200D:

  • The camera has the ability to remotely control external Pentax flashes using the built-in flash.
  • There is support for high-speed synchronization with external flashes.
  • The synchronization speed with the built-in flash is only 1/180 seconds, and in order to select the value 1/180, you need to set the change step in the camera menu exposureequal to 1/2 foot.
  • There is a built-in simple processing of RAW files.
  • If you raise the built-in flash, it can act as an auxiliary backlight when focusing.
  • Minimum excerpt is 1/4000 s.
  • And the camera has a function bracketing exposure.
Pentax K200D and Canon EOS 350D

Pentax K200D body and Canon EOS 350D body. Apparently, in those days there was a fashion for silver cameras :)

The K200D is probably the only camera I really disliked. The reason for this is very simple - the camera uses four conventional AA batteries instead of batteries. On the one hand, batteries are a blessing, but on the other, they are very impractical.

Here is what is indicated in the instructions:

Used batteries: AA Ni-MH batteries, AA lithium or alkaline batteries.

Everything would be fine, but the camera refused to turn on with my five sets of Ni-MH batteries that I use for my flashlights. Believe me, I have very good Ni-MH batteries with a capacity of 2500 mAh and a good La Crosse BC1000 charger. Thus, for two days I could not turn on the camera at all, as I constantly forgot to buy regular batteries. Then I still bought a set of good Duracell 1.5V LR6 Alkaline MN1500, on which the camera lived for 50 minutes of studio shooting and took exactly 190 frames, after which no 'dancing with a tambourine' made it turn back on. Next, I bought another set of Sony Alkaline Stamina Plus AA LR6 AM3 1.5V batteries on which the cameras lasted 80 shots, while I was shooting on the street and the camera either showed a full charge of the batteries, or did not want to turn on at all. The latter situation is described in the instructions and can be considered standard, but still there is nothing worse than the whims of the camera with the inclusion. At home, I 'warmed up' the batteries and squeezed out about 20 more shots from them, after which this set also worked its way. I ended up buying another set of batteries, the Hyndai Mega Alkaline LR6 1.5V Mercury & Cadmium Free, which lasted over 100 shots.

Most likely, the camera did not want to work with my Ni-MH batteries, as their voltage is 1.2V instead of 1.5V for regular batteries. In any case, the web is full of user complaints about battery and / or battery problems. I believe that this problem puts an end to the use of this camera. For example, no other Nikon or Canon camera is ever so naughty with batteries, even if these are old models on the 'killed' native Ni-MH batteries.

It is possible to use lithium batteries, or some Ni-MH batteries, will be able to ensure full-fledged operation of the camera, but personally, my desire to bother with this issue has long disappeared. And you can also buy a Pentax D-BG3 battery pack, which also works on 4 AA batteries.

Nowadays, the Pentax K200D is outdated, and perhaps this is its advantage. K200D can be bought for a penny and enjoy the image stabilizer with manual optics in a rugged protected case :). Personally, I was not upset by the most adequate functioning of the camera with modern power sources.

Decent device, color rendering pleases :)

    • Do_Oraemon

      CCD is the same.

  • sergey

Tsіkava camera, Tsіkava with his zachistom vid drive and saw. The batteries weren’t practical, so don’t have to reach the contacts (as long as you can use the batteries, then the batteries must be short-circuited). Dyakuyu Arkadiy for your diligence.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It is unlikely that the aki did not work because of what you wrote about, because the camera with them showed a blinking battery indicator on a monochrome display :)

      • sergey

I have such a problem with me, virіshiv її підклавши on the terminal of the shmatochka zaliza.

      • Novel

The contact was not normal, that’s why the camera thought, what about Akumi Sivshі

    • Do_Oraemon

The best idea was about the batteries on the Nikon D70. The kit went stupidly with an adapter for three batteries. Once such a bonus even helped out - stuck to charge the battery.

      • Arkady Shapoval

The d70s have already been removed from the kit and these were the only cameras for batteries instead of a regular Akum :)

      • Dmitriy

The Pentax K-R has the same adapter, however, with 4 batteries and must be purchased separately. Very rational in my opinion.

    • Novel

I’m contacting at my K200 hour and hour, I’ve cleaned and pidginayu and all pratsyu normally. Such is the problem in the Pentax models ’models and not only in them, since for a long time you have to prick up with the A95 and S3 Kenons.
Me especially K200 befits, great charm. Besides, to the pentax with a shaft of quite good-quality non-destructive objects to reach affordable prices, vibrate to the secondary market and reach the great.

  • Alexey

I still shoot sometimes with this camera. at the expense of batteries: from the moment of purchase I used ansmann batteries, everything was wonderful. until I updated the firmware and the old batteries wore out. on new ones, the camera also began to be capricious, but if you use batteries, then everything is not so bad, of course, on an amateur scale. The picture always pleased me, yes, sometimes I didn’t stretch it on high ones. Now he gave Pentax to his son.

The problem with low displayed charge in old “Pentaxes” with battery compartments is often mentioned in the respective forums. Apparently, at first, such cameras behaved adequately with batteries and accumulators, but over time, problems began. Various possible reasons for this behavior are described. Faced with this in the old "Samsung GX-1L" (analogue "Pentax * ist-DL2"). I applied one of the recommendations found on the network - I cleaned the contacts of the battery compartment with an eraser. It helped, but in some situations it glitches - it looks like the contacts in the camera are made of some kind of bad metal, which is why over time the contact with the batteries gets worse and worse ... the remaining glitches that appear from time to time are apparently due to the fact that they do not work well contacts in the power button that are difficult for me to reach.

    • Do_Oraemon

You know, I think that gilding should not be rubbed with an elastic band. Here, probably, the ammonia will be even more appropriate - it copes wonderfully.

  • Max

Pentax doesn't like ordinary batteries; it loves the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (which comes with the camera). I made more than 700 frames with them. Then he acquired AA batteries Ansmann 2500 mAh. A full charge is enough frames for 500. And their price is much more affordable than branded batteries on Canon and Nikon.

    • Felix

The original battery for d200, d80, d50, d90, d300, d700, d70, 7.4V 1500mA (12 W / h) costs 200 UAH now, the cheapest AA batteries also cost 180-200 UAH, but it’s much more capricious in work, and charge longer significantly.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, and what should be replaced by a quick Akum, than to catch the 4 drop-out batteries, to peer at the correct installation of the poles, etc. :)

    • anonym

I have no more than 2500 frames on the 150 fresh frames, but the white 2000mAh frames are about 100 frames

      • Nicholas

Apparently there is some kind of defect, and he passed my camera ... like Mach, I have more than half a thousand shots on one charge, I have a high-speed charge for 40 minutes and into battle.

  • Sergei

    Arkady hello.
I want to express my gratitude for everything that you do
here in Kazakhstan even in photo schools they won’t teach what you share with us
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

    • Ronin427

In Kazakhstan, there is Toptygin, so in vain you are. =)

  • Paul

I am also familiar with the problem with batteries. old minamoto-2500, pleomax-2700, fully charged on the Tech-Line BC-700 smart charger, cannot turn on the camera (Pentax Kx) even with the matrix cleaning system turned off. but compact cameras Canon IS-150, the ancient Olympus C-4000 also do not include. but they work with flashes, however, the recharge time is about 10 seconds, even when the flash is not working at full power. the reason is one - low starting current. it's like a car battery - the headlights shine brightly, and they can burn for a long time, but the starter cannot crank the crankshaft. I bought a Sanyo Eneloop 2 years ago and forgot about these problems. I didn't measure it for sure, but somewhere around 500 frames without a flash I shoot, despite the fact that the display in my camera model does not forcibly turn off. and hold the charge for a long time.

    • Michael

Hello! Pavel please specify Sanyo Eneloop batteries or memory? Since I myself am the owner of the pentax k200d and looking for a more reliable power source! Thanks!

Compared to K5, the colors are gorgeous

  • Orestes

Arkadiy, you don’t have been able to make such an aggressive review of the K200, well, let’s see the aggression and growth in the review. You can't judge the whole line of the K200 by just the same tushts as you can see. K200 Wiyshov reach far away with a camera, with a rather inconceivable functional and a wonderful picture. K200 is even more popular and fun. Win on the head of a visceral bagatokh of his peers and vypushennyh piznishe carcasses in nikoniv, kenoniv, ...
It is clear that in k200 there is a problem іz alive, but there is such a problem є і in іnshih virobnikіv. In bagatokh vipadki, it is not є deadly and contentedly easy to assimilate.
I am inviting and baggage of the most important people, so much respecting myself, since I’ve had enough of an irrepressible camera in the world, since I’ve got morally stuck, too short of music, but I’m happy with great potential, I can take photos of them.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general, we can say that any camera is pretty good, right?

      • Orestes

The skin camera has its own "+/-", and also has its own character

    • Alexander

Let's guess. Do you have a nice view of this device? :)

      • Orestes

        Soundly.

  • Ronin427

Interesting ... I wish I could feel the Pentaxes ... It is a pity that we have so few of them.

  • Mayskiyjuk

I have been a user of this device for about 7 years now. I like the device without exaggeration, the picture is excellent, it is convenient to use.
About the batteries. My algorithm is very simple. I have a set of lithium batteries, I use them only when the batteries are empty and there is no other choice. They are enough for almost 900-1000 shots (the first such batteries came with the new device). In addition, I use 2 sets of well-known enelup batteries with one remark - they must be from new series. Those that were before, with small holes near the positive contact, worked very poorly with the device, and it seems that they are a little shorter, which is probably why the contact was lost. I charge them with lacrosse and have no power problems at all. I like the device, I am not a professional and I don’t need megapixels and rate of fire, and therefore I don’t intend to change it yet, I love it dearly, and I use it actively.

    • Vladimir

May bug, you are 100% right !!!
This subject is the BEST among Pentax! And the references to the grief of photographers to BATTERIES are not consistent ...

I am victorious two sets of banal Ufo 2500 and 2700, changing the average size of one set of Akum for 300-500 frames and any problems. I’m able to K200 even 6-7 days, trial 26 thousand, taking the second-hand camera in the camera of another camera, wait for your hands to come from it, I will drive it in the trunk of the car permanently. I’ve specially succumbed to K200, I’m more likely to have sunk into my soul, н I have a new charm in me.

  • Boris

The camera does not have to be fed only with modern fingertip elements. It was originally designed for CR-V3 lithium cells and RCR-V3 rechargeable batteries, once often used in consumer photography equipment. look carefully at the shape of the battery compartment - the cells do not have round outlines, as in ordinary cameras on purely battery power, but rather oval. Thus, 1 CR-V3 cell is replaced by two modern finger-type batteries, of which two must be put in this one. It is on such elements that the camera is able to snap off more than one hundred frames. And the power supply with batteries and accumulators of the usual type AA or LR6, more common now, was rather a pleasant bonus for this camera in its time.

  • Alexey

I once had a Samsung GX-1L. I am not a professional photographer and the apparatus was quite suitable for me. It was necessary to part with it solely because of inadequate work with batteries. By profession, I am a radio engineer, having made several measurements and studied the service manual, I managed to find out the following:
The device is designed to use NI-MH batteries. When turned on, it consumes significant (up to 3.5A) current. If the voltage on the batteries gives even a short-term drawdown below the set level, the device does not turn on and the charging indicator instantly drops to zero. High-quality and new batteries only briefly solve the problem. Then everything repeats and the device turns on badly again or goes out at the most inopportune moment. In addition, NI-MH have a high self-discharge rate and after lying down for a week after charging are unsuitable for work, they must be charged again before going to shoot.
Never buy equipment with such batteries!

    • Victortin

Alexey You are wrong !!! The Pentax K100 and K200 are really designed to use lithium batteries and rechargeable batteries (the CR-V3 and RCR-V3 that work great) or (as an alternative) with alkaline batteries. The K200 is NOT designed for use with NI-MH batteries and does not need to be used. I have been using several Pentax with RCR-V3 lithium batteries for many years and there are no problems!

      • Arkady Shapoval

I wonder for whom I cited the data from the instructions:

Used batteries: AA Ni-MH batteries, AA lithium or alkaline batteries.

  • Nicholas

I have this camera, I had no problems with the batteries, it takes a long time, I can’t name the exact number, but I think it's close to the passport. I use any batteries with slow self-discharge, GP Recyko 2050, Camelion AR 2300. I’m used to the screen, it allows me to find out the settings not including the main screen, the camera is budget and the screen is like a little bonus that other manufacturers in this segment do not have.

  • Georgy

Yes, there were only two problems with this camera, but such that forced to change it.
    1. Batteries. I adapted to use with a slow self-discharge - GP Recyko, they allowed to shoot up to 650-700 frames without flash and brief viewing on the display. But still the risk of refusal to shoot was constant. It was enough for one battery to get a little hooked. In addition, the spare batteries did not start working right away - the camera showed zero charge at first, then gradually “fired up” and started working at the minimum indication of the charge indicator. After about an hour, the indicator showed full charge and the excitement subsided.
But this is in the warm season. In winter, even in small frosts, the camera refused to take pictures. In order to somehow work, we had to warm the camera under clothes, which is very uncomfortable, or remove and warm the batteries, which sharply reduced the efficiency.
    2. Loud noises in low light and when shooting with ISO over 400.

I bought K50 (there was not enough money for K5), and I gave K200 to my grandson.
Now no problem - another matrix, lithium batteries. And the old AA batteries in the K50 work without interruption.

  • anonym

Filmed for five years on K110D. The power problem was so acute that the camera did not turn on at all from any batteries (including enelups), but only took about 30-40 shots from energizer batteries. As a result, it got so tired that I made an external power supply - a 6 volt battery 4,5, 3Ah from the UPS into the socket for the power adapter. There is a non-standard connector, but I accidentally got such an angular one from a burnt router. The battery lies in a bag / backpack / is fastened to a belt in a case from a "soap dish" and allows you to shoot autonomously for more than 4600 months (on a long trip I took 110 frames, but this may not be the limit) I recently changed k200d to k20d and I can say that Power is much better, the camera starts from the batteries and takes 30-XNUMX frames. So it depends on what to compare. And I won't trade external power for anything anyway

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

I agree that the camera does not completely drain the batteries. I have been using PESEN-Chinese and Enelup batteries for 4A for the 2100th year. There are no problems at all, what they write in the reviews is great news for me. And it is precisely Akumy AA that I consider the greatest advantage of this camera. As a traveler, it is convenient for me to rearrange them on a flashlight and on a bicycle flashlight, how many times I have helped out! In the future, I only look at the K30 or K50, although Sony and Nikon are also attracted to me, but they do not have such a convenient and unpretentious power supply. 400-500 shots without flash. At my wedding, a photographer-friend fotal a full-matrix Canon, the pictures are colorless and not funny compared to “my old man”, although the sharpness is naturally inferior to a full-matrix one, especially since I have a whale lens.

  • Anton

I use two NiZn and two NiMH Eneloop. In the cold, 400 frames from a bush.
Two minuses: The indicator always shows Full; you need two separate battery chargers.

  • Sergei

I’ve been using the camera for about 6 years, I used to buy used as the second, in addition to the newer model. Took for the sake of color rendition. At low ISOs, among the newer ones that are already with CMOS matrices, it has no equal in color! I have never experienced any problems with food, I use Enelups with my own charge. The camera has its drawbacks, which have already been mentioned. This is slowness, noise at ISO over 400 (although under certain conditions it can be shot at 800), not very wide DD, which also rapidly narrows with increasing ISO. Because, as a main camera, it is of course hardly suitable for today. But as the second, for certain plots, it is beyond competition. Changing kx to k-5, then k-5 to k-3II, there is no desire to change k200d to anything else.

  • Vladimir

But is it true that exposure compensation only works in M mode? If so, not very convenient.

  • Voha

K200D - the camera pleases with the picture! On a single charge of black enelups (2500) 1150 frames !, and they still worked, but they planned to shoot - reloaded. The shutter rustles more musically than k20d, but louder than k5-2).

  • Cotofey

We put the sensor from K10 in the case from K100. From the point of view of 2007, a very strong marketing ploy ...
But from the point of view of the outgoing 2016? ... I had a K100, now a K10, and what can I tell you - I would really like a hybrid on the contrary - a 6 megapixel matrix from K100 installed in a body from K10.
Finger-type batteries in a camera are the most real EVIL, incomprehensible and merciless =) You never know if a camera that has been lying on a shelf for 1-2 weeks will turn on - self-discharge, even for eneloop, is simply indecent.
I also noticed a nuance - if the discharged batteries according to the camera were put ON DISCHARGE in a smart charger, then they still managed to suck 900-1000 mAh. Those. the discharge threshold in the camera is set not for NiMh batteries, but for alkaline batteries.
If the batteries hadn't baked me, I would have used the K100, the colors of the coarse 6 megapixel matrix are better, the noise is less.
Note to owners - you can use CR-V3 batteries, but in the K200, you may need to trim the plastic "nodules" inside the battery compartment. You can also use LiFePo4, they have almost no self-discharge, but the effective capacity just corresponds to half-sucked NiMh, which is an option for everyone.

    • Sergei

Enelups for 1,5 years, or even 2 are lying around idle, and the charge of 75-85% of the total is shown ... I'm talking about indecent self-discharge, if that ... By this indicator, I have not met batteries better than ENELUPs. ZhiPi ReTsiko are close to them, but that's all one thing will be worse ... They are made using a similar technology (even the Ansmanns and Sony have similar ones) ... Everything else is rubbish!

    • Sergei

And yet, the self-discharge of the enelups is very small, but even the turned-off camera eats power (each camera and model, and which brand is larger and which is smaller.) At least Fujik 3pro is prescribed in the manual. Therefore, if you do not use, take out the batteries ! Moreover, they can be discharged lower, 0,7-0,9 volts and then they can die. And most likely they will die or (and) the capacity will drop noticeably.

      • Alexey

And how is Fujik 3 PRO doing with the “pill” battery? Does it sit down quickly too?

        • Sergei

          Where is the pill ?!

    • Sergei

In the camera, for the automatic operation to work correctly, a strong voltage drop is not permissible. For example, Kodak 2700 or 2600mA batteries have an initially high internal resistance. The camera turns off thinking that the cramp is over and the flash after it works on these codecs for a long time! Just a flash requirement to food is not so high.

  • Sergei

Very reminiscent of Sony A100, the impression is that at the heart of this camera is Sony A100.

  • anonym

About the problem with the power supply. I recently bought this unit from my hands. I put in the enelups and 3 sets (2000 mAh, 2500 mAh, 2500 mAh, just like that, sequentially) gave more than 2000 frames, The last set has not run out yet ... Shove anything into the battery compartment ... And don't wait good result ...
