Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

The Nikon Class 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 lens is available in two versions:

  • Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (the so-called version MKI, without the letter 'D' in its name) - produced from 1991 to 1992.
  • Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (lens from this review) - produced from 1992 to 1999, optically exactly the same as the first version, the new version is able to transmit the value of the focusing distance to the subject. Perhaps the enlightenment has been slightly improved in the new version.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D is an old 2.5x zoom film lens. Unlike other standard zoom lenses, such as Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6DThe Nikon 28-70 / 3.5-4.5D has a slightly enlarged aperture at the long end (F / 4.5 VS F / 5.6).

Older general purpose Nikon lenses are usually well made, and the Nikon 28-70 / 3.5-4.5D is no exception. The lens is small and relatively light, weighing 360 grams. The zoom and focus rings are rubberized. The lens can use the Nikon HB-6 bayonet hood. The specimen that I reviewed has an uneven distribution of forces when the focal length is changed, i.e. the zoom ring may 'fall off' slightly at mid-range focal lengths, a fact that slightly diminishes the credibility of the lens but is not a major drawback.

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

Nikon 28-70 / 3.5-4.5D’s auto focus speed is average, closer to fast. During focusing, the front lens rotates and moves forward :(.

The focus ring rotates during autofocus and must not be touched. The focus ring is marked with focusing distances in meters and feet. The minimum focusing distance is 40 cm and the maximum zoom ratio for macro photography is 1: 4.6. Nikon 28-70 / 3.5-4.5D uses small standard diameter 52mm filters.

When the focal length changes, the lens trunk travels in waves - it lengthens and then shortens. It's funny that the maximum length of the trunk is at 28 mm focal length, while at 70 mm the trunk only slightly extends forward. The most compact lens has a 50 mm focal length. When the focal length is changed, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens moves inside the lens. It's a pity that the next lens in this line - Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D focusing became internal, but the front lens began to rotate when changing the focal length :(.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.

Diaphragm comprises nine petalswhich is quite unusual for an inexpensive lens. On closed apertures, the circles in the out-of-focus area can turn into polygons, but they look pretty nice and do not cause as much discomfort as ordinary 'nuts' on lenses with fewer blades. Among similar lenses, 9 diaphragm blades have only Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (logical extension of the lens from this review) and Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF. Aperture closes to F / 22 @ 28mm and F / 29 @ 70mm.

Surprisingly, the lens creates a very high-quality picture, especially on covered apertures. Nikon 28-70 / 3.5-4.5D easily transfers back and side light and has good sharpness in the center of the frame already at open apertures. Of course, you can’t get away from a little distortion and vignetting. Most likely, good image quality is due to the fact that this lens uses hybrid aspherical elements in its optical design.

In the Nikon 28-70 / 3.5-4.5D, I was a little confused by the color performance, which takes the picture into a light green cool shade (seen in JVI).

Here link to the archive with the originals - 335 MB, 27 photos in .NEF format (RAW) from the Nikon camera D700 (FX).

On Nikon DX cameras EGF the lens will be 42-105 mm, how suitable is such a lens as a universal lens for Nikon DX cameras - everyone should think for himself :).

Results

As a result - Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D turned out to be a well-balanced lens, which nowadays can serve as a super-budget option for a standard lens for full-frame cameras, and still create good pictures. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D I liked much more than the 'fat man' Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5but less than Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D.

And what, Nikon began to make full-format zooms with 6.3 on the long end?

        • fotika

I have not seen such, but apparently d1 was 1 crop, and the lens appeared 10 years earlier. 6.3 more all the same under the crop is used in lenses. therefore, I noted that in our time there is optics with such diaphragms.

  • Dmitriy

I have one, quite often I use it on the crop - as a street station wagon, this small, light relative of Nikkor 28-70 / 2,8 is very good. Only I have a feeling that it does not turn green, but takes the color rendition into a slight yellowness. This is also not bad, it adds sun in cloudy weather. The focusing speed seemed to me below average, although not so much that it was annoying.
By the uneven movement of the mechanism when zooming. It was so. I fixed the bug elementary. He took off a bayonet mount, a floating reflective curtain and screwed the blotted back lens block to the stop. Interestingly, the backlash of this part of the optical design does not affect image quality. In general, it is made very high quality and firmly, in a word, the good old Nikkor.
By price. It is now worth a penny, and at the time of graduation more than three hundred evergreen presidents wanted him.

    But I prefer Nikon AF 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5
There was AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D: I didn't like the sharpness at the edges, AF was often wrong and the flesh color rendition is just awful and hard to edit (D90 camera). Maybe the copy was unsuccessful, but AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 is much, much better - my favorite lens, one drawback: there is not enough SHU on the crop.

  • Georgy

Hello, please help! I decided to buy a SLR, Nikon D90 stopped. I am a novice lover, DSLRs have never been owned. In general, I was offered the Nikon D90 in two versions, either with a Nikon D90 AF-S DX 18-55 mm lens or with a Nikon D90 AF 28-70 mm 1: 3.5-4.5D lens. The camera is new. I want to buy, please tell me which lens to choose.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If 18-55 VR, then the first option.

    • anonym

Hello. Thank you very much for your advice. But there was another option for the same money 350 euros Nikon D90 AF18-270 mm 1: 3,5-6,3 72DI TAMRON, but mileage 30000 frames. Please tell me which one to choose.

  • Amatich

Take and do not worry! The stock is still there, the declared resource is 150 frames. About Nikon D 000.

  • Oleg

On your Fotika.com.ua bourgeois bargain prices.

  • anonym

some kind of new genre of advertising. And I was talking about registration ... eh ..

  • Sergei

You can buy it on the secondary market, but make sure there is no “fungus”, oil, chips, scratches and a lot of dust.
I bought an old one in Japan. After the purchase, I was shocked by the quality of the pictures taken. An old "horse", but keeps the "furrow" no worse than "gold stripes". I use the lens almost every day with the D750.

  • Oleg

Just the other day, I literally bought myself one for 65 greens. What to say? For this price he has no shortcomings! On the open, the picture is a bit soft, but if you cover it, excellent sharpness throughout the frame. I practically do not observe distortions and HA. Focuses fast enough. I use it on the D7100.

  • Igor Filchakov

In the afternoon and in the studio - gorgeous! Sharp but softly harsh, portraits are beautifully produced. Contrast, color rendering - good.
But at night .. When shooting the night city, I caught a whole firework of hares. Felts due to the open aperture, that is, a feature of the lens. In general, on the D200 for night shooting I will not take it.

  • Michael

I indulged on the d80 with this lens, and didn’t understand why I bought it. There is no wide angle for crop. Sharpness starts at 35, and then you need to squeeze the aperture, which makes it unsuitable for use in the evening hours. Good soft-focus focal points 50-70.
I am for 18-70 for crop.

  • Basil

Why take this lens for crop? I bought it on occasion for 30 bucks at the auction. After I tried it, I was stunned. I sold all the tokens and tampons (there are people who still respect them) The lens gives an amazing volume, color, sharpness, very good from the background despite the aperture. Why buy the left 2.8 zoom when it is still working with 4. Moreover, autofocus on relatives works much better

  • George

Hello, Arkady. There is a choice between 28-70 3.5-4.5D and 28-105 3.5-4.5D. Nikon D600 camera, there are 70-210 f4-5.6 in stock. Tell me what will be better in terms of quality? If you take lenses about the same state. Are there any significant differences in terms of picture?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, there is a difference. 28-105 is preferred.

      • George

        Thank you!

      • Vovka

And what is 28-105 preferable to? Just facing the same choice.

        • Sergei

          In that longer, and weighty.

        • Michael

          Convenient set of focal

  • Waldemar

Hello! I have been using Nikkor AF 28-85 / 3.5-4.5 N on FX for a couple of years now. I recently purchased this AF-D 28-70 / 3.5-4.5. I immediately thought that the task was not difficult: I would sell the old man and leave the newcomer. Since it is more compact, newer, there is a “D”. But today I went outside to take a couple of test shots for comparison. And I found out that the letter D and the focal point on the long end are not their only differences. I want to share my impressions, we will only talk about the picture.
    1. A beginner in the center of the frame on the open is a little softer than the old man, but the sharpness remains almost unchanged throughout the frame. When you close the aperture, sharpness improves accordingly and the software goes away. The old man at the edges of the frame, the sharpness drops much more noticeably.
    2. On the focal 28-50 on the open, the beginner suffers from quite noticeable HA along the edge of the frame, at the long end things are better. It is noticeable, for example, on bare tree branches against a bright sky. When closing the diaphragm, the situation improves. While the old man is doing the opposite, at a wide angle, HA did not notice at all, appear only at the long end.
    3. Another interesting difference. I photographed buildings at a distance of 20-40 meters. While the old man noticeably blurs the foreground (for example, cars standing between me and the building), the newcomer leaves everything very sharp.
Different layouts make themselves felt, and lenses have very different character. And the task of choosing becomes more difficult for me ...
