Review Travenar wide auto 1: 2.8 f = 28mm

Travenar wide auto 1: 2.8 f = 28mm is a fast wide-angle lens with M42 mounting thread, made in Japan. There are several more Travenar lenses, class 28 / 2.8: Super Travenar 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MC, Super Travenar 1: 2.8 f = 28mm, Auto Travenar 1: 2.8 f = 28mm.

I got a sample with a bent thread for the front filter, but overall the lens is in very good condition.

The body is made in a classic design of metal, the focusing ring is rubberized and rotates 200 degrees. The lens uses 55mm filters. There is a scale for focusing distance in meters and feet on the body, the minimum distance is 30 cm. There is also a depth of field scale for values F / 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16 and an 'R' mark for working in the infrared spectrum. During focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk extends slightly forward. The aiming is not smooth and did not cause any difficulties for me.

The diaphragm consists of only six blades and closes to F / 16. At concealed values from F / 2.8 to F / 8.0, the petals form pronounced notches, at F / 8.0 the notches disappear, and the hole takes the shape of a regular hexagon. When shooting an irregular aperture does not visually affect the formation of the blur zone.

The lens also has an 'M / A' aperture mode switch that allows you to control the aperture either manually or automatically (on cameras that support a similar 'blinking' aperture).

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

Sigma Zoom 15-30mm D 1: 3.5-4.5 DG EX Aspherical IF and Travenar wide auto 1: 2.8 f = 28mm on the ZK

Optically, the lens was very weak. On F / 2.8, it is very difficult to achieve a sharp image even in the center of the frame. When you close the aperture to F / 5.6, sharpness returns to normal. Travenar 28 / 2.8 is very afraid of flare and creates bizarre glare. Distortion and vignetting are present, but not critical.

The lens is good in that it is necessary to try a little. I noticed a long time ago that using a simpler technique or, as in this case, an optically not outstanding lens, circumstances make you think more and this certainly brings you to a higher level.

    • Do_Oraemon

Yeah, and as a result, it’s commonplace to spend more time on editing pictures. Because the miss in the exposition can still be pulled out, and no straight arms compensate for the cotton sharpness and soap pattern. So it often turns out that the whole day, killed on a photohunt, brings the result in the form of several conditionally successful shots. So, basically, the skill of owning raster editors is pumped :)

one of the “greats” said (I think Helmut Newton) that before, photographers thought more BEFORE pressing the shutter button, and now AFTER, during processing ...

If there are no brains, then 7ka will not help.

  • Gene jb

Judging by the glare, it is made of ordinary glass.

    • Do_Oraemon

      From the window :-)

      • Arkady Shapoval

Well, well, at least not from a bottle, like many Soviet ones :)

  • DimDimych

And I really liked the photo. Although the sharpness is weak and the glare is strong, but it gives such an artistic picture that I have not seen anywhere else. And all his shortcomings, the artist, of course, I mean the photographer, is able to turn into virtues! Of course, this is not glass for every day, it is a special, special tool to create. And Arkady knows what to do with such glasses. It’s a pity that the damned policy paved the way for hatred between our countries ((Arkady, I admire you! Thanks for the review!

    • Misha

Correctly. Helios 40, only in shirikov camp))) Glass for a deep creative approach. Only with its help you can get a masterpiece with a touch of exclusivity.

      • Do_Oraemon

There is no bazaar, only now, masterpieces from such glasses are obtained mainly by accident. Here you can’t want to get a highly atmospheric picture using any specific algorithm of actions. Previously, as it was: I smeared a UV filter with Vaseline and was guaranteed to receive highly artistic halos and stars around light sources and highlights. And in the case of such glasses, you have to rely on chance and send 90% of the footage into trash. No, thank you, specially buying glasses of such a plan is not a joke.

When gold is mined, 99,999% of the rock is sent to trash.

          • Do_Oraemon

When gold is mined, then everyone is ready for this and the mining justifies itself and pays for itself a thousand times. And when the whole day spent in frost or heat goes down the drain (and no View NX and Photoshop taken together can help the frankly shitty glass), then I'm ready to argue. If you want highly artistic effects, buy glasses with known characteristics, such as Lensbaby. Everything is very clear there: this lens is a tilt-shift, and this one is a monocle. Yes, and there are nozzles to get artistic effects from a completely normal and sharp glass like Crystalizer'a and other rubbish.

            • anonym

Look again at the photo from this review. Arkady’s day was not in vain. It's not so bad, creature, except that if you do not take into account the pictures where the prominences in the sun tried to take.)

              • Arkady Shapoval

honestly, a long time ago we came up with a display on the camera, through which you can pretty well navigate whether the pictures are taken or the pictures from one lens or another are not obtained. If you don’t like the pictures, I took out another lens from the case and there was nothing to chew on the snot. And I spent the time with this Travenar on the strength of 40 minutes, just to make a review.

              • Do_Oraemon

Yes, I'm not talking about that. It’s just completely clear that nobody will buy such glass specifically because of its “artistic effects”. Lying on the mezzanine - wonderful. No - well, good.

  • Amatich

    Arkady, thanks for your work.

  • Dmitriy

    Color conveys well

  • Igor

Although not sharp, it gives a beautiful picture.

  • Dmitriy

I agree that the sharpness of the lens is not up to "razor-sharp", but the picture as a whole is, in my opinion, very beautiful. I especially liked the color rendition - it is very similar to the “good old” color film “Thomas”. And in general, Travenar's picture itself is "film"

  • Vadim

I had the same one, but under the Exaktar brand - the lens is not Japanese, but Korean (sometimes they write lens made in Japan, but it's not a fact that they don't lie, and even if they don't lie - in fact, this did not oblige them to anything). Produced at the present Samyang plant at the same time that the cooperative movement flourished in the USSR and with an identical Soviet cooperative quality. Among the pluses - inexpensive, light, constructively pleasant, there was a pleasant bokeh with its own pattern, and not just a technical blur. Cons - very strong spherical aberrations and loss of sharpness, I'm not even sure that the lens had infinity, but I was shooting the norms close up.
