Overview of Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO N / AIS

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is, without further ado, a wonderful lens that I really liked and one of the few lenses that is hard to say goodbye to when sending it back to its owner. First of all, the lens deserves attention due to its very durable body, comfortable ergonomics and high-quality images.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is available for Nikon and Canon cameras. This review presents a version for Nikon cameras, which has the inscription 'N / AIS' ('Nikon AIS') on the mount side. The model is marked on the box as'AT-X M100 PRO D'. Visually, the Canon version is easily distinguished by the absence of the aperture ring.

Before the release of the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO version, there were two more macro webs from Tokina:

  • Tokina AF 100mm 1: 3.5
  • Tokina AT-X 100mm 1: 2.8 M100AF

The lens is very well made, and the coating of the body strongly resembles old Nikon professional lenses. The lens trunk is metal, as is most of its body. The lens weighs 540 grams and is a pleasure to work with. In general, almost all lenses in the 'Tokina AT-X PRO' series have a very high-quality build and feel like real 'professional instruments'.

In addition to the focus ring, the lens has another narrow decorative ring for a comfortable grip. The focus ring and the narrow extra ring are rubberized.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO, maximum lens trunk length

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO has a special focus stop 'Limit \ Full'. In the Limit position, focusing is available from infinity to 40 cm, with a maximum magnification of approximately 1: 2.5. You can limit the work not only from infinity to 40 cm, but also vice versa - from MDF to 40 cm, leaving, thus, only a range for macro photography. In the Full position, focusing is available from infinity to 30 cm, while focusing on MDF, you can get a 1: 1 magnification. The limiter is very easy to switch and operates in manual and auto focus modes.

Although the minimum focusing distance is 30 cm, this number shows the distance from the subject to the camera’s matrix (i.e., to the focal plane), and the focusing distance from the subject to the front lens is about 11 cm. I found that if you set the hood, then when shooting on MDF in a 1: 1 scale, the hood is 5-6 cm from the subject. For many photo tasks, such “proximity” is extremely undesirable, for example, you can easily scare removed insects. If you shoot with a flash at distances close to MDF, you can easily get a shadow.

Auto focus is quite slow at any position of the focus limiter. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens significantly lengthens. Also, when focusing, the rear lens remains stationary. The lens uses 55 mm small diameter filters.

To switch to the manual focus mode 'MF', pull the focus ring towards the camera mount. After putting the lens into manual focus mode, you can optionally not switch the focus mode near the camera mount. Such a switching mechanism exists on a huge number of Tokina lenses and is called the 'One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism' - 'One-Touch Focus Control Mechanism'.

The focusing ring is very wide, comfortable, rotates 200 degrees in the 'Full' position. Manual aiming is very convenient (experienced when working on a non-motorized camera Nikon D3300except as described below). In 'AF' mode, the focus ring rotates freely and does not affect focus.

But the focusing ring travel from infinity to 2-3 meters is very short, in such cases they say that the range is 'not stretched'. This affects the fact that when shooting portrait (and other) shooting in this range, focusing on the sharpness is not very convenient. The lens is still more designed to work with close focusing distances.

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO has a window that shows the focusing distance in meters 'M' and feet 'FT', as well as an 'X' magnification from 1:10 to 1: 1. There is also a depth of field scale for F / 16, F / 32 (indicated by two white dots).

The lens focuses quite accurately, and focusing errors are not systematic. Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO normally focuses in Live View on my camera Nikon D700.

Like most other macro lenses, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO changes the minimum number F depending on the focusing distance. So aperture F / 2.8 can only be used in the range of ∞-3 m. When focusing on MDF, you can shoot with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6. Diaphragm consists of 9 non-rounded petals and closes to F / 32 when focusing on infinity and to F / 64 on MDF. Due to the non-rounded petals, you can easily achieve multipath star effect. When focusing, the effect is noticeable 'Focus breathing'.

The lens comes with a sturdy plastic lens hood BH-551. The lens hood snaps into place using special slots. The hood can be installed backwards and always carried with you, however, in this position it completely blocks access to the lens focus ring. The hood has a velvet finish on the inside.

Features of the version for Nikon:

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

During auto focus, the camera and lens are quite noisy.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 32 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.

The front lens of the lens is deep-seated in the frame, but despite this, the lens can easily and very much suffer from flare when working with side light. Under normal conditions, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO creates a very sharp and sharp image, even on fully open apertures. On covered apertures, the lens becomes very sharp. Sharpness drops only when the apertures are very closed due to diffraction. The lens has a nice color rendering and bokeh, almost zero distortion and very weak vignetting. Chromatic aberrations are also very small. In general, I was very pleased with the image quality.

I liked the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO much more than Tamron SP AF 90mm 1: 2.8 Di MACRO 1: 1 272E and even more than native Nikon AF 105mm 1: 2.8D Micro-Nikkor. Of course, more modern macro lenses such as Canon Macro Lens EF 100mm 1: 2.8 L IS USM or Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm 1: 2.8G VR is much more interesting than the built-in image stabilizer, internal silent focusing, constant manual focus control, etc., but their price tag is completely different :).

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is a great lens. The so-called 'Token Macro Weave' is one of the best lenses I've ever used.

UPDATE: the same optical scheme is used in a movie lens Tokina Cinema AT-X 100mm T / 2.9 Macro.

  • Wef

Good afternoon! Silly question - do you know why Tokina is being washed out of the market? I wanted to order one the other day - they called from the store - we can't deliver, like they don't.

  • Slavik

Hello everyone! A question for experts. There is a painful choice between this and Nikon 85 1.8G ... Portrait ... Please tell me! Many thanks to the unsubscribed!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would prefer 85 1.8g - quieter, stop light, native, m / a mode, there is a motor, etc. Although, makrushnik vs portraitist is always a difficult choice.

  • Alexander

Thanks to Arkady! Thanks to his advice, I bought several lenses, one of them is a tokina from this review. I am a amateur photographer - I just love taking pictures. Above, in the comments, it was said about the eyes of the spider - I shot the spider on this tokinu and Nikon D7100 without any additional equipment. Professionals, I ask you not to scold too much - it turned out what happened!

    • BB

I would like more DOF, by the way, what is the diaphragm?
But in general - a 'like' from an amateur))

      • Alexander

I set the aperture to 11. I only set it with the ring on the lens - the camera does not work, although I hold down the checkbox at 32 and when the checkbox is clamped in any of the modes (MASP), the aperture does not change in the camera when scrolling the wheel! I understand - if someone knows why I am so, I will be grateful for the advice! If possible, I will show a few more photos taken with this lens. What parameters in the photo I do not remember anymore, because I do all the photos in RAWe with subsequent processing in But one main thing is that I bought this lens from my hands for 10 rubles and I really like it! Although it sometimes focuses slowly and loudly, I shoot spiders only in manual mode and they are not afraid! Once again, many thanks to Arkady for his website and helpful tips!

        • Jury

In the camera settings, there is an item like “Setting aperture” (I don’t know exactly what it’s called in the D7100) and in it you can choose - the sub-command dial or the aperture ring. Select the sub dial and control the aperture from the camera, which is much more convenient

  • Alexander

And such a portrait in nature.

    • Alexander

Horror! Compositions zero! Puff on the forehead! Glare on oily skin! "Snot" in the nose! Stupid black strap! What is there to boast about?

      • Yarkiya

A man boasts of a lens, and a photo a year ago, maybe he has already learned. And if you have not learned, then the flash must be covered with a diffuser, at least.

        • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

As for me, such an everyday photo is 100 times more expensive than a photographed studio stamp portrait. All-all glossy magazines are the last to be scored. Like blitz-stamping on a conveyor belt.

  • Alexander

Yuri, thank you very much for the hint! As I did not immediately guess! I have five lenses and only this TOKINA with a rheostat type aperture ring! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I thought the problem was in the lens, but it turned out to be me! As the always authoritative LYNX says, teach materiel! In this case, it's definitely about me. Once again I was convinced that Arcadia's site for novice photographers is a kind of Bible and an encyclopedia rolled into one! I could not resist - I put up another photo of this TOKINA - I really liked this lens! I shot a built-in flash on the D7100 at night. 16 aperture RAW processing in Photoshop. This spider had one of its left legs eaten.

    • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

And in jeepeg, reportage, without shop treatments, improvements can you provide something?

  • Arthur

    Beautiful lens
I do not regret at all that I took it instead of my own from Canon with a stub
    Canon seemed unemotional in drawing
But Tokina has its own character:

  • Victor

    Hello everybody.
    That suggest?
Shot this lens on the Nikon D600, it turned out fine.
Then the error appeared F EE. I can not get rid.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Close the aperture ring to a minimum.

    • Yaroslav

The lens most likely fell, and the protrusion on the manual diaphragm ring broke off.

      • anonym

Did not fall, the protrusion is in place

  • Victor

I tried, it does not help.

  • Victor

The service said that the processor failed.
    Very sorry for the lens.

  • Andrei

I liked the lens very much, I think I’ll take it, but I also want to shoot reportage shooting (exhibitions, concerts), will it work?

    • Lynx

no. For this, a bright zoom is needed. or two

      • Andrei

        Even a flash won't help?

        • Lynx

For reporting, a quick zoom is better than a slow fix macro.

          • Andrei

            Which one can you advise?

            • Lynx

for Nikon, the ideal for filming concerts will be 70-200 of the last series. but the price is more than considerable.

for exhibitions, i.e. for shooting in cramped conditions - rather a shirik, something like Nikon's 20-35mm 1: 2.8D or 17-35 / 2,8, and others, the list is here: https://radojuva.com/2015/07/nikon-ed-af-s-17-35-2-8d-if/

Universal (if there are enough focal points) - 24-120 / 4.
cheaper and pretty good, but old - 28-105 / 3,5-4,5 if you can find it in good condition.

Good afternoon, tell me please from your own experience that it is better to buy such a token or Sigma AF 105mm f / 2.8 EX DG MACRO

  • Andrei

Just awesome reviews with you! Thanks!

  • Vladimir

Good afternoon, tell me please from your own experience that it is better to buy such a Tokin or Sigma AF 105mm f / 2.8 EX DG MACRO for the nikon d7000 camera

  • Stas

And who knows, is there a significant difference between this lens and the Tokina AT-X AF 100mm f / 2.8 macro?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      this is the same lens

      • Stas

I asked because I was presented with this lens, but it does not quite correspond to your review, at least in appearance. It does not have a Pro marking and there is no af and mf switch on the lens body. I can’t say more yet, I didn’t figure it out.

        • Arkady Shapoval

then this is the previous version

          • Stas

If interesting for the site or for you, Arkady, I could send this lens for testing. Personally, I like it more than the Pro because of the IF, since the trunk is missing. But…. macro 1: 2.

            • Arkady Shapoval

              Yeah, it would be great.

  • Kirill

    Hello Arkady!
I have already seen here a question comparing this lens and 85 1,8G - you wrote that 85 is preferable in terms of technical parameters (lighter, motor, etc.). And if you omit the technical parameters? Which lens has a “better”, “more interesting”, “more artistic” picture? I understand that everything is subjective, but your personal impression is interesting?

    • Denis

what boring photos are here and what are interesting in the review 85 F / 1.8G

      • Kirill

Well, this is probably someone else ... It's the opposite for me, in the 85 1,8G review, the photos will be more varied and interesting, of course, but how colors, bokeh, perspective are conveyed ... somehow I like more from this weave. That is why I ask that I am facing the choice of 85 1,8G or this one hundred square meters ... I have a D7100, I only worry about the resolution of my matrix? Which lens is sharper when open? 85 1,8G - borrowed from a friend, tried it, it resolves perfectly, the sharpness is just colossal, as they say, “pixelated”, but I like the drawing of this hundred more ...

      • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

That's right !!! And I'm talking about the quality of the photo examples on the site. Why are they so homely ?!

  • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

The prices are all in hryvnia - as if it is not even lunar, but Martian money - you cannot even roughly understand how much it is in reality, that is, in dollars or in rubles.

    • Oleg

Arkady, is it time to invite Ray?

  • Anatoly Snezhan, Gomel

Yes, and the photos displayed are so wildly narrowed, distorted that, honestly, they just sharply scare away even from expensive, elite optics. I don't even look at the photos anymore - I believe the reviews and comments of the owners of the monitored optics.

  • Sergei

Hello. Not long ago I read Arkady's review about Takin's macro-weave (Tokina 100mm f / 2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro) and wanted to buy one. On ebay I found two versions of this glass, the first one with an aperture control ring, and the second one without a ring. Now the question arose what is the difference between them and which option is better to buy ???? I will use it on Nikon D7100. thanks

    • Stas

See above - without ring for Canon.

      • Sergei

Thanks Stas))) apparently did not read carefully.

  • Sergei

The next, hackneyed question is ripe - what to choose ???? On the local market, a new sigma 105 mm with a motor and a stub caught my eye. The difference in price is a paltry 370 euros for sigma and 380 for tokina. Image quality is a priority. The absence of a stub on the Tokinovskoy macro-weave is not scary, since there are two flashes, a double bracket and blue ones. cable, so it gets so much behind the picture. Maybe someone used sigma and can share their impressions ??? Thanks in advance.

  • Nikita

Arkady, tell me please, what do you think this lens is better than the native Nikon AF 105mm 1: 2.8D Micro-Nikkor. Is there a serious difference optically? Just facing a choice on the D700. I noticed that the Nikon AF 105mm 1: 2.8D Micro-Nikkor on the secondary costs 15 percent less than the similar Tokina. Your opinion is interesting. Thanks.

    • Jack

you don’t notice much difference in anything. Nikkor is simply much older, but at the same level of sharpness. and of course find if a good copy.

  • Jack

Thank you so much for the review. I bought this miracle only thanks to your review a year and a half ago as the first lens for macro and after that I got so close to macro that from Nikon this is the only lens that I have left)) such pictures are obtained on it. fotkal myself

Hello! SW owners, tell me, pls how the lens behaves in subject shooting in the backlight: does not go blind? Doesn't catch hares?

I would like to see a photo from crop. and the pictures are on the mail ru, from Ukraine without VPN you can’t go there, and through the VPN download 700 meters, it’s not like ice. You can not reload somewhere not on the mail ru?

  • Alexey

greetings. My focusing ring in automatic mode has a fairly large backlash (about two mm) - along the axis of the lens. Do many have this, or is it a feature of my copy?

Tell me, please, does anyone meet with strong HA on this lens?
