Overview of Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO N / AIS

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is, without further ado, a wonderful lens that I really liked and one of the few lenses that is hard to say goodbye to when sending it back to its owner. First of all, the lens deserves attention due to its very durable body, comfortable ergonomics and high-quality images.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is available for Nikon and Canon cameras. This review presents a version for Nikon cameras, which has the inscription 'N / AIS' ('Nikon AIS') on the mount side. The model is marked on the box as'AT-X M100 PRO D'. Visually, the Canon version is easily distinguished by the absence of the aperture ring.

Before the release of the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO version, there were two more macro webs from Tokina:

  • Tokina AF 100mm 1: 3.5
  • Tokina AT-X 100mm 1: 2.8 M100AF

The lens is very well made, and the coating of the body strongly resembles old Nikon professional lenses. The lens trunk is metal, as is most of its body. The lens weighs 540 grams and is a pleasure to work with. In general, almost all lenses in the 'Tokina AT-X PRO' series have a very high-quality build and feel like real 'professional instruments'.

In addition to the focus ring, the lens has another narrow decorative ring for a comfortable grip. The focus ring and the narrow extra ring are rubberized.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO has a special focus stop 'Limit \ Full'. In the Limit position, focusing is available from infinity to 40 cm, with a maximum magnification of approximately 1: 2.5. You can limit the work not only from infinity to 40 cm, but also vice versa - from MDF to 40 cm, leaving, thus, only a range for macro photography. In the Full position, focusing is available from infinity to 30 cm, while focusing on MDF, you can get a 1: 1 magnification. The limiter is very easy to switch and operates in manual and auto focus modes.

Although the minimum focusing distance is 30 cm, this number shows the distance from the subject to the camera’s matrix (i.e., to the focal plane), and the focusing distance from the subject to the front lens is about 11 cm. I found that if you set the hood, then when shooting on MDF in a 1: 1 scale, the hood is 5-6 cm from the subject. For many photo tasks, such “proximity” is extremely undesirable, for example, you can easily scare removed insects. If you shoot with a flash at distances close to MDF, you can easily get a shadow.

Auto focus is quite slow at any position of the focus limiter. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens significantly lengthens. Also, when focusing, the rear lens remains stationary. The lens uses 55 mm small diameter filters.

To switch to the manual focus mode 'MF', pull the focus ring towards the camera mount. After putting the lens into manual focus mode, you can optionally not switch the focus mode near the camera mount. Such a switching mechanism exists on a huge number of Tokina lenses and is called the 'One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism' - 'One-Touch Focus Control Mechanism'.

The focusing ring is very wide, comfortable, rotates 200 degrees in the 'Full' position. Manual aiming is very convenient (experienced when working on a non-motorized camera Nikon D3300except as described below). In 'AF' mode, the focus ring rotates freely and does not affect focus.

But the focusing ring travel from infinity to 2-3 meters is very short, in such cases they say that the range is 'not stretched'. This affects the fact that when shooting portrait (and other) shooting in this range, focusing on the sharpness is not very convenient. The lens is still more designed to work with close focusing distances.

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO has a window that shows the focusing distance in meters 'M' and feet 'FT', as well as an 'X' magnification from 1:10 to 1: 1. There is also a depth of field scale for F / 16, F / 32 (indicated by two white dots).

The lens focuses quite accurately, and focusing errors are not systematic. Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO normally focuses in Live View on my camera Nikon D700.

Like most other macro lenses, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO changes the minimum number F depending on the focusing distance. So aperture F / 2.8 can only be used in the range of ∞-3 m. When focusing on MDF, you can shoot with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6. Diaphragm consists of 9 non-rounded petals and closes to F / 32 when focusing on infinity and to F / 64 on MDF. Due to the non-rounded petals, you can easily achieve multipath star effect. When focusing, the effect is noticeable 'Focus breathing'.

The lens comes with a sturdy plastic lens hood BH-551. The lens hood snaps into place using special slots. The hood can be installed backwards and always carried with you, however, in this position it completely blocks access to the lens focus ring. The hood has a velvet finish on the inside.

Features of the version for Nikon:

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

During auto focus, the camera and lens are quite noisy.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 32 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.

Two class 100 / 2.8 lenses - Hanimex Automatic 1: 2.8 f = 100mm and Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO

The front lens of the lens is deep-seated in the frame, but despite this, the lens can easily and very much suffer from flare when working with side light. Under normal conditions, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO creates a very sharp and sharp image, even on fully open apertures. On covered apertures, the lens becomes very sharp. Sharpness drops only when the apertures are very closed due to diffraction. The lens has a nice color rendering and bokeh, almost zero distortion and very weak vignetting. Chromatic aberrations are also very small. In general, I was very pleased with the image quality.

I liked the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO much more than Tamron SP AF 90mm 1: 2.8 Di MACRO 1: 1 272E and even more than native Nikon AF 105mm 1: 2.8D Micro-Nikkor. Of course, more modern macro lenses such as Canon Macro Lens EF 100mm 1: 2.8 L IS USM or Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm 1: 2.8G VR is much more interesting than the built-in image stabilizer, internal silent focusing, constant manual focus control, etc., but their price tag is completely different :).

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is a great lens. The so-called 'Token Macro Weave' is one of the best lenses I've ever used.

UPDATE: the same optical scheme is used in a movie lens Tokina Cinema AT-X 100mm T / 2.9 Macro.

Oh and the girl in the photo. Beauty!

  • Alexey

Thank you for a very interesting review)) very informative

  • anonym

It resembles a Pentax D-FA macro cell without weather protection.

  • Arkady

The girl from the review of sigmopoltos)))

  • Novel

It’s a good lens, it was on the D7000, the sharpness is excellent, I don’t know if this is a crop or not a good model, it was very limp, and they should have been sharp, but I remembered it only from them

    • Do_Oraemon

At "Tokin" time at a time is not necessary. Quality pretty tangibly dances from copy to copy.

      • Denis

Please recommend where to read about the algorithm for checking a specific instance in the store.
That is, not defects, but the "success" of the instance.

    • Natalia

I wanted to buy myself such a lens and also on Nikon D7000, but when I tried it on, FEE was written on the small display of the camera instead of the aperture. The seller assures that everything is in order with the lens ... What could be the matter, do not tell me? Maybe someone came across a similar one?

      • Jury

read the last few comments in this article

        • Natalia

Thank you, I read everything at once from the beginning to the end. He doesn’t write this error in the full frame, he changed the settings in his camera by choosing an auxiliary control dial. But still writes F EE!

      • Andrei

Have you fixed the hole in the minimum position?

        • Natalia

Thank you, the issue has already been resolved. The advanced advanced sales assistant Nikon helped, it was in the additional settings of the camera.

  • Igor

I now saw firsthand pictures with "ringing sharpness". Another +, Arkady!

  • Vladimir

And if you compare with the Canon 100mm without a stub?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I didn’t use without a stub.

  • Jury

Thanks for the review, Arkady. You take good photos. Next up is the D3300 review?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      This is how it goes.

      • Igor

        Arkadiy, you have everything! ;))

The object is not easy, the photo is just gorgeous !! I dvchina Komsomol member, activist and just a beauty;)

  • B.R.P.

Or maybe there will also be a Hanimex Automatic 1: 2.8 f100mm review? The photo is so interesting.

  • Alexander Gvozd

I liked the lens, albeit close-up, but it produces gorgeous portraits! It is worth paying attention to it! Thanks for the review!

  • Oleg

Great quality for a reasonable price. The main thing is that the copy is checked during the purchase.
PS Beautifully now in the KPI)

  • Aleksandr

Good review! It is a pity that for macro lenses there are very few macro photos (namely small items). Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

See the archive, there are at least 5 photos from the cublight on the MDF and closed apertures with 24 megapixels d3300

  • Jury

Arkady, you wrote “Because of the non-rounded petals, you can easily achieve the effect of a multi-rayed star”. Once, I put Tair-11A on the camera, during a night shooting of the city landscape, and was very surprised by the beautiful 20-ray stars around the lanterns, on a closed diaphragm, although Tair's hole - you know what :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

With non-rounded petals, this effect is usually much easier to obtain.

      • Jury

It's strange why it is easily obtained on completely round apertures of the diaphragm - I, until this moment, naively thought that there would be no rays at all on Tair :)

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Nothing really strange or special.

        • The Hedgehog

perfectly round hole only on the open :-)) therefore, under certain conditions, the star is obtained on any glass :-))

          • Exhausted

A perfectly round hole, even on a covered aperture on many lenses.

  • Zmitser

Yes, the picture on this glass is really amazing. Especially sharpness.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Spider eyes 1: 1 macro will not “take”. The archive has a 1 to 1 macro.

  • Sergei

The photos are beautiful ... but I constantly look, when the macro lens, then there are no macro photos, like pollen on the belly of a bee or the eyes of a spider ...))

    • Oleg

Sergey, but where is it (a bee with pollen) to find in the middle of October ???

      • anonym

        we saw in Odessa yesterday)))
it is a pity that there was nothing with them, they were so little mobile, just what you need !!!

      • THE

Yes, a shaft of them now. Yesterday I photographed flowers - do not come, then bees, then gadflies.

    • Lynx

Macro Macro discord. Portraits of spiders in profile are made not on standard macro lenses with an increase of up to 1: 1, but on more interesting, often home-made designs

    • Yarkiya

Spider eyes won't work even with a set of macro rings and a macro lens. You can try with macro fur and it will work out, but the spider must be either with steel nerves (eggs) or dead, not everyone can withstand the glass a couple of centimeters from the "face" and a flash directly into the eyes.

  • Alexey

Chic optics .... on ebay you can get such a lens for an average of $ 380, in perfect condition from Japan. If a Japanese seller writes the state “mint” or “excellent ++”, then this can be trusted unconditionally. I bought used optics on ebay from Japan - it really comes, like new.

  • Nikolai (sn797)

Once upon a time, I really wanted to buy this lens and its cost at that time was of great importance to me, but due to various unforeseen reasons and a lot of doubts, in the end I bought a “native” Canon EF 100mm f / 2.8 USM Macro ( without L and without IS :)). 635 “bucks” almost ruined me :) A couple of years of practice showed that I was not mistaken with the choice in making a “financially difficult” decision, my native makrik is always dear, but still, I still have some nostalgia for Tokin. Perhaps, come out your review of the year in 2009, I would now be with this Tokina ... :) The colors of autumn are super! The model is beautiful! Thanks for your review!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for sharing. By the way, it so happened that this is 50.000 comments on Radozhiva.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

very high-quality photo shoot (if not the most)

  • Amatich

    Thanks Arkady.

  • Nicholas

It’s better not to read your reviews, you can go broke. After your reviews and photos you want to run to the store. :-) Health to you.

    • anonym

You don't need to run anywhere ... ... Don't make yourself an idol, among the lenses. The picture is beautiful, bright, but somehow not living-plastic, half-tones on the model's face are almost lost, I think so.

  • anonym

Arkady, why do you use flash so often on the street? Better than natural light, there is no ... And the flash cuts faces great ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

To align the exposure scene, if the model is in the shadow and the background is in the light, which is actually here in the review. The last 5 photos in the review without a flash, since all (both the model and the background / front background) have the same illumination.

  • Leonid

Thanks for the review. Photos are just class, give compliments to a girl, very beautiful. Yes, you need to think about purchasing a lens.

  • Alex

I have one, under nikon. One of the best glasses I've ever used. Very versatile: it copes equally well with portraits, and with the subject, and with any “landscape-flower” tasks. It practically has no drawbacks, the only thing I noticed on my copy was some easily removable soft HA in the open, only when shooting bright contrasting objects: not twigs on trees against the light, but, for example, nickel-plated bases-legs under table lamps. In short, an extremely rare situation. I can also note a very plastic and in an amicable "colorful" picture. At the same time, not flat-fair, as in modern nikkors with “N” -coats, but giving depth of space in urban landscapes, when you want to convey haze or fog, or smog. All in all, this is an absolute must-have lens, and not only in terms of price-quality ratio, for which it certainly has absolutely no analogues. I have experience using several not-so-bad makrikas: 60 / 2.8nikkor, 70 / 2,8sigma, 90th tamron.

  • Ivan

I have a previous version of the lens, without a protruding trunk. everything within the frame that does not change its dimensions. True, for the Canon system ...

    • The Hedgehog

and, probably, with an increase of 1: 2 ..

  • Anonymous through 07.02.2014/XNUMX/XNUMX through Yandex money

Thank you, Arkady! Low bow for what you are doing for us ... At your suggestion, I bought this "glass" for the boot from the Japanese, h / z ebay. The state is NEW, even the chip does not show “scuffs”. And the result …… !!!!! THANKS!
