Overview of Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO N / AIS

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is, without further ado, a wonderful lens that I really liked and one of the few lenses that is hard to say goodbye to when sending it back to its owner. First of all, the lens deserves attention due to its very durable body, comfortable ergonomics and high-quality images.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is available for Nikon and Canon cameras. This review presents a version for Nikon cameras, which has the inscription 'N / AIS' ('Nikon AIS') on the mount side. The model is marked on the box as'AT-X M100 PRO D'. Visually, the Canon version is easily distinguished by the absence of the aperture ring.

Before the release of the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO version, there were two more macro webs from Tokina:

  • Tokina AF 100mm 1: 3.5
  • Tokina AT-X 100mm 1: 2.8 M100AF

The lens is very well made, and the coating of the body strongly resembles old Nikon professional lenses. The lens trunk is metal, as is most of its body. The lens weighs 540 grams and is a pleasure to work with. In general, almost all lenses in the 'Tokina AT-X PRO' series have a very high-quality build and feel like real 'professional instruments'.

In addition to the focus ring, the lens has another narrow decorative ring for a comfortable grip. The focus ring and the narrow extra ring are rubberized.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO, maximum lens trunk length

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO has a special focus stop 'Limit \ Full'. In the Limit position, focusing is available from infinity to 40 cm, with a maximum magnification of approximately 1: 2.5. You can limit the work not only from infinity to 40 cm, but also vice versa - from MDF to 40 cm, leaving, thus, only a range for macro photography. In the Full position, focusing is available from infinity to 30 cm, while focusing on MDF, you can get a 1: 1 magnification. The limiter is very easy to switch and operates in manual and auto focus modes.

Although the minimum focusing distance is 30 cm, this number shows the distance from the subject to the camera’s matrix (i.e., to the focal plane), and the focusing distance from the subject to the front lens is about 11 cm. I found that if you set the hood, then when shooting on MDF in a 1: 1 scale, the hood is 5-6 cm from the subject. For many photo tasks, such “proximity” is extremely undesirable, for example, you can easily scare removed insects. If you shoot with a flash at distances close to MDF, you can easily get a shadow.

Auto focus is quite slow at any position of the focus limiter. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens significantly lengthens. Also, when focusing, the rear lens remains stationary. The lens uses 55 mm small diameter filters.

To switch to the manual focus mode 'MF', pull the focus ring towards the camera mount. After putting the lens into manual focus mode, you can optionally not switch the focus mode near the camera mount. Such a switching mechanism exists on a huge number of Tokina lenses and is called the 'One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism' - 'One-Touch Focus Control Mechanism'.

The focusing ring is very wide, comfortable, rotates 200 degrees in the 'Full' position. Manual aiming is very convenient (experienced when working on a non-motorized camera Nikon D3300except as described below). In 'AF' mode, the focus ring rotates freely and does not affect focus.

But the focusing ring travel from infinity to 2-3 meters is very short, in such cases they say that the range is 'not stretched'. This affects the fact that when shooting portrait (and other) shooting in this range, focusing on the sharpness is not very convenient. The lens is still more designed to work with close focusing distances.

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO has a window that shows the focusing distance in meters 'M' and feet 'FT', as well as an 'X' magnification from 1:10 to 1: 1. There is also a depth of field scale for F / 16, F / 32 (indicated by two white dots).

The lens focuses quite accurately, and focusing errors are not systematic. Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO normally focuses in Live View on my camera Nikon D700.

Like most other macro lenses, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO changes the minimum number F depending on the focusing distance. So aperture F / 2.8 can only be used in the range of ∞-3 m. When focusing on MDF, you can shoot with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6. Diaphragm consists of 9 non-rounded petals and closes to F / 32 when focusing on infinity and to F / 64 on MDF. Due to the non-rounded petals, you can easily achieve multipath star effect. When focusing, the effect is noticeable 'Focus breathing'.

The lens comes with a sturdy plastic lens hood BH-551. The lens hood snaps into place using special slots. The hood can be installed backwards and always carried with you, however, in this position it completely blocks access to the lens focus ring. The hood has a velvet finish on the inside.

Features of the version for Nikon:

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

During auto focus, the camera and lens are quite noisy.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 32 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.

The front lens of the lens is deep-seated in the frame, but despite this, the lens can easily and very much suffer from flare when working with side light. Under normal conditions, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO creates a very sharp and sharp image, even on fully open apertures. On covered apertures, the lens becomes very sharp. Sharpness drops only when the apertures are very closed due to diffraction. The lens has a nice color rendering and bokeh, almost zero distortion and very weak vignetting. Chromatic aberrations are also very small. In general, I was very pleased with the image quality.

Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO Maximum Length

I liked the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO much more than Tamron SP AF 90mm 1: 2.8 Di MACRO 1: 1 272E and even more than native Nikon AF 105mm 1: 2.8D Micro-Nikkor. Of course, more modern macro lenses such as Canon Macro Lens EF 100mm 1: 2.8 L IS USM or Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm 1: 2.8G VR is much more interesting than the built-in image stabilizer, internal silent focusing, constant manual focus control, etc., but their price tag is completely different :).

The Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO is a great lens. The so-called 'Token Macro Weave' is one of the best lenses I've ever used.

UPDATE: the same optical scheme is used in a movie lens Tokina Cinema AT-X 100mm T / 2.9 Macro.

  • Igor

Thanks for the review, very informative

  • anonym

Optically, it is good, but competitors have since released several new models with AF motors and stabilizers ...

  • koba

Yesterday I received this lens. It is simply excellent in all respects, and unlike the information here about slow autofocus, at least on my Nikon D3s autofocus works very quickly in all modes, almost silently and almost did not notice any misses after shooting trial 100-150 frames. Subjectively, the speed even comes close to my other lens - 24-85G (not VR!), Which is, according to Rockwell, the sharpest standard zoom for Nikon (personally, I can also confirm this!), And also has the fastest focusing (which I personally also I can confirm!). So, again, this Tokina focuses in all modes a little slower than my 24-85G. I even decided to make a video the other day about focusing these lenses and send Ankadia to post it on the Internet. By the way, on my old D700 it also focuses at almost the same speed, I just checked it. In any case, even if it were manul, everyone is advised to buy it sooner or later.

  • Yura

Excellent glass, and macro and portraits, and this is 2v1.

  • Igor

Dear Arkady, thank you for your work and a wonderful review, however, having downloaded the source code for your link in the format (NEF (RAW) and JPEG from the Nikon D700 (FX) and Nikon D3300 (DX) cameras), I did not find examples of photos on the Nikon d3300, accordingly, I, as a representative of the army of owners of cropped cameras, did not receive any information for myself about the behavior of the lens when shooting a portrait on a DX camera. This question arose because this lens is positioned not only as MKAR but also as a portrait. Please add your opinion on the use of Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO on crop, if possible with examples of photos !?

  • Manfromsummer

This afternoon the lens I ordered arrived ... in my humble opinion it is simply the best lens I have ever had. Definitely worth the money. I will not list all his magnificent qualities - a lot has been written about this, I will simply say in two words: gorgeous and divine.

    • Yura

I, too, fell in love with him from the first frame! Now ordered to him in addition to Nikon 180mm f2.8 III)

      • Magomed

Tell me please, does it have a constant 2/8 aperture?

        • Manfromsummer

Like most other macro lenses, the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO changes the minimum F number depending on the focusing distance. So aperture F / 2.8 can only be used in the range of ∞-3 m. When focusing on MDF, you can shoot with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6.

  • Alexey

I don’t know, maybe I was unlucky with the copy, but it was terribly chromatic, I sold it without regret ... I bought a Nikon 105 2.8 G.

    • Koba

It's definitely not lucky if this lens has something missing, it's chromaticism. He is almost completely devoid of it. By the way, no one talks about such a phenomenon as microcontact. This lens has a tall one, which is especially true for black and white photography. And about such a property of optical devices as a spatial resolution, that is, resolution not only over the entire field of the frame, but also, as it were, in the depth of space, ultimately this is expressed in the ability to resolve not only the edges of the frame, but also to transmit sharply distant shots (for example , from my personal experience, the Nikon 28-105 is the worst with long-range shots, and the simple 50 1.8D is ahead of all professional zooms combined). The sharpness of this lens is slightly higher than that of the same 50 1.8D. By the way, Zeiss lenses (real ones, not the ones on which Zeiss is written for Sonya - this is mostly marketing stuff for fools, and there are many of them in the world) and are famous primarily for micro-contrast and spatial resolution, Zeiss Sonnar 135 is ideal in this respect / 2, it is perfect, better everything and everyone. So in terms of its optical performance, this Tokina is in the same league as the best lenses from Zeiss, and for only $ 200-250. After the pictures received from him, I don't even want to look at my own 24-85 G. See also the video of Ken Weller, how he, the man who has everything in his collection, literally all the lenses from Nikon, unequivocally says that this tokina is much better than analogues not only from Nikon, but also from almost all other manufacturers. Of course, there is the famous Zeiss Makro 100/2, and he cannot reach it, one from the league of completely perfect lenses, but it costs a bastard $ 1500 and it is manual. When I put it on my D3s for tests on a fast hand and then looked at the footage on the computer, I got the feeling that I changed the camera itself (this exactly happened to me when I did the same with the Zeiss Zonnar 135/2). In short, there is no reason, including the price, not to buy and use several lenses in the world, and this Tokina is one of the first candidates. The other is the Voigtlander 58 / 1.4, but I don't have it yet. And funny, but the third is the Nikon 50 1.8D (with the exception of unsatisfactory backlight performance, it surpasses the picture obtained from all professional zooms in all respects, including the Nikon 24-70 / 2.8G! Therefore, it has not been discontinued and it is released along with the new The G version, which ... is inferior to it in terms of the obtained volumetric image and micro-contrast) or, if you prefer 35mm, it's the good old Nikon 35 / 2D. The new king among shady standard fixes, of course, must be recognized as Tamron 45 / 1.8 VC, with the only drawback - but it has an average spatial resolution. Also, do not forget that to maintain high micro contrast with high-quality lenses, you always need to shoot in lossless RAW 14-bit, and import files with 16-bit color, otherwise it will simply be lost.

      • Alexey

While you can’t take off all the lenses yourself, it’s too early to draw conclusions

        • Koba

That's right, personally, I not only shot with these lenses, but I did it for a long time, and this lens is in my collection and will always be there. Awesome lens! I recommend it to everyone, I personally took it in a new state for $ 220, that is, for nothing for such a lens ...

  • Glory

On the crop sensor, a 1.5: 1 magnification, do I understand correctly?

    • B. R. P.

      Right.

      • Michael

        not quite right.
on crop, the angle of view of the lens decreases. there is no increase as such.
the simplest test: Nikon D800, crop mode -15MP, FF mode -36MP. the picture on the crop will simply be cropped (which is done in any editor) but will not increase in any place.
the increase will be if under a narrower angle of view you put a matrix with a higher resolution than the FF.

Flour of choice) Advise a macro lens on the Nikon-7100. This one is good, but there are serious flaws. This is the weight, noisy when focusing, the trunk is moving out, there is no AF motor, no stabilizer. Nikon 105 is good, but expensive. Tamron 90 leaving trunk, no stub, but with a stub, the price is almost like Nikon 105. So, which one to choose, how much is the middle ground, for my Nikon-7100 crop?

Better Digging or Nikon 105 Credit! I DIDN'T USE BUT I SEE MANY REVIEWS! The device is what you need! 52 thousand is the normal price! I would take it! And I think I'll take it!

Hello SW. Arkady and readers! Please tell me, I choose between this Tokina and Kenon 100 f2.0. The carcass is the first penny, the task is portraits. Both are good ... Tell me what? thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

Under the portrait, I recommend the native Canon 100/2

      • Novel

Arkady, first of all, I want to thank you for your reviews of lenses, very interesting and useful information from both the technical and artistic side.
Well, and secondly, an inaccuracy crept into the text: “The lens comes with a strong plastic hood HB-551” in the photo you can see that the hood has the designation “BH-551” this is the designation for Nikonovsky hoods as indicated in the text.

  • Karina

Arkady, hello, can you tell me what the problem is? We used the lens for 2 months, everything worked perfectly, the aperture control lever on the lens was set to f2.8, shooting was usually in M mode. Suddenly, right in the middle of the workflow, the lens stopped shooting, fEE error. What could be the problem? Indeed, according to the logic of things, the settings did not change, the camera did not turn off, the lens was not removed. Nikon d850 camera. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Try to set the aperture ring to 32 and control the aperture through the camera control dials

  • Alexandra

    Hello! Thanks for the review!
I have the task of finding a budget glass for portraits of family children on the street (with the most blurred backdrop and focus, the faster the better) and subject shooting. There was a set of 85mm 1.8g + d610, it fully met my needs, but I did not have to sell back to ff in the next year or two.

Now I'm shooting on d300 and sigma 17-50mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8d. 50mm on the crop is tolerable, but the sad sharpness of sigma and bokeh from these lenses hurts the eye. I will leave Sigma for reporting in rooms with a flash, but it will not be suitable for artistic shooting.

Financially I can now afford 35-70mm 2.8 AF-D, 85mm 1.8D, 50mm 1.4 AF, Tokina 100 2.8 (from the review) - they cost almost the same on the used optics market available to me.

What to prefer for my tasks?

    • Alexander

Alexandra, since you already have 50 / 1.8d, buying 1.4 won't win much. Because will have to pinch the hole to 2.0 because of the software. Tokina is not suitable for your needs at all! Since it is very slow and not accurate autofocus, and often with back focus. 85 / 1.8d - fast autofocus, sharp enough when open, the background will blur more than others, but how convenient will the focal focus be for your tasks ?! 35-70 is a focusing lens, but rather capricious, with unstable results. Afraid of back and side light. Low contrast, almost always requires increased contrast in the editor. The background in the trash cannot be blurred. This lens must be approached. When buying, pay attention to the presence of fungus. You had a good set for shooting (d610 + 85 / 1.8g), but in this situation it is very difficult to find something that would suit you for little money.

  • Vadim

There is such a state of new

    • Vadim

      If interested, territorially Krasnoyarsk

  • Alexander

Arkady, I read about this lens. Everyone is good except for autofocus. Well, it would be slow and noisy, but almost all instances have back focus. Accordingly, the question is: does Tokina have a similar Manual Makushnik with no less quality for a photo? Because overpay for autofocus, which in principle is not (on my technique), at least not advisable.

  • Andrei

    Good afternoon. I bought a Tokina AT-X 100mm f / 2.8 D macro 1: 1 lens. boo
    Canon 6D Camera.
I can't understand - is it partially faulty or not fully compatible with the camera ????
Maybe someone came across a similar ???
Since at an aperture other than f / 2.8 it shoots only from 50 cm. If you tighten the aperture and shoot closer when the shutter is released, the camera gives an error “err01” - an error in communication between the lens and the camera.
In the manual focus of the lens - everything is the same !!!
Is this an error due to a loop of the diaphragm drive or is it just the old firmware?
And for macro, you need a lot aperture. And if you cover it from 50 cm to the object, then the diaphragm begins to adjust. - then there is no point in macro. Cannot get close to the subject. Those. that's why I bought it - you can't use it for macro.
    Thank you in advance.

    • Alexey

I did not encounter errors in Tokin optics software, only the sigma suffers from this. most likely a problem with a dangling loop. make out and look. Tokin thing is extremely durable, purely mechanical.

  • Igor

    Good afternoon!
And I have a kenon version, and it does not have a diaphragm change ring (….
I put it on the fujik through a regular ring, and…. Can't adjust the aperture…. (it turns out you only need to sleep the booster ... ..

And the lens is gorgeous, did not remove it from the cannon carcass

  • Karbofoss

    Cheer up, good people!

My question is this ... Here, this Tokina has a switch to the manual.
And what happens at this moment with the camera? Does she keep “thinking” she has an AF lens or what?
I mean, the sound confirmation of the focus, and the focus priority shot, cannot be accidentally implemented?

    • B. R. P.

      Continues.

    • Arkady Shapoval

no, the camera understands that the lens has switched to M mode. The focus trap on nikons does not work. Works on Pentax. Just system features

      • Karbofoss

        Our thanks for the info!
Eh ... bad business. Why are they like that, these Nikonites, smart-assed! It’s a pity for them to peep once again ...
So the focus will not work. Sadness.

      • Karbofoss

It is necessary to cut some wires in it ... So that you don’t understand!

  • Karbofoss

Others! Here's another question I have...
I wanted to buy it, but the person here tells me, they say, this lens is for crop ... It’s not good for a full frame!
Why am I completely confused ... To this day, in various reviews, etc. I watch people spit to nothing both on crops and on FX. For the first time I hear that he is DH! Clear your doubts...

    • B. R. P.

The review clearly says - ff. What is there to dispel, sho are you indulging in?

    • Arkady Shapoval

it is for a full frame, no options

      • Karbofoss

        Ok guys, thanks!

I was also very surprised, after the seller’s statements that he had bought a d700 for himself, and now this lens does not suit him, because he has an image “like in a pipe” and “it is for crop”!

      • Valery

In the crop, how will you behave?

I plan for macro and street portraits.

        Дякую

        • B. R. P.

          e.f.v.=*crop factor.

        • Andy From Far Away

On crop it worked perfectly for me on Nikon D7500. Very good glass. Also very suitable for portraits. If we take into account the price/quality, then I can confidently say that it is one of the best lenses I have ever owned. Sometimes I attach it to Fuji GFX. True in manual mode.
