Review of Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D

The Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D is a unique lens, it has a 3.75x zoom and a fixed maximum aperture of 1: 2.8. Personally, I do not know of other similar high-aperture lenses with such a large zoom ratio. For example, lenses such as Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8GN ED и Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-70mm 1: 2.8 L USM have a total of 2.92X zoom. It is easy to recognize the zoom ratio by dividing a larger focal length by a smaller one, in the case of Tamron 28-105 / 2.8 276D you need to divide 105 mm by 28 mm and get a result of 3.75 X.

It is generally accepted among photographers that it is very difficult to make a good fast zoom lens for full-frame cameras with a zoom factor of more than 3X, and for some focal length ranges it is physically impossible. But that was not the case, Japanese engineers did their best and made a really very interesting lens.

Personally, I very often use a lens with the same focal length range - Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D and I think this range of focal lengths is very, very convenient, which is suitable for a huge number of photo tasks. By the way, the difference between the range of 28-105 mm and the more common ranges, such as 24-120 mm and 24-105 mm in practice, I feel weak, although at one time I played enough with my Nikon 24-120mm 1: 3.5-5.6D AF Nikkor и Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1: 3.5-5.6G SWM VR IF Aspherical. As a result, Tamron 28-105 / 2.8 276D acts as a universal lens with a very attractive range of focal lengths, and even with maximum aperture F / 2.8 over the entire range. In practice, it is difficult to overestimate the ability to use 105mm@F/2.8 for portraiture and 28mm@F/2.8 for indoor use, especially in low light.

Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D

In fact, the Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D presented in this review is not the first lens in the 28-105 / 2.8 class. Prior to this, the company had a Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 176D, which is easily distinguished from the 276D by the red 'Aspherical' lettering. The lenses have the same optical design. Model 276D was produced from 2000 to 2004, and 176D - from 1997 to 2000. There is also a manual Tamron SP Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 176DA.

Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D

The manual for Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D, in which it is designated 'Tamron SPAF 28-105mm F / 2.8 LD Aspherical [IF] (Model 276D)', includes three lenses at once: 266D, 67D and 276D. At first I was even worried, but what if the manufacturer saves not only on paper and layout for instructions, but also on the lenses themselves? But then he reassured himself that these three lenses could be the leaders, the 'Stakhanovists' of their time, that's why the instructions are immediately issued for all three 'brave guys'. I scanned the instructions, you can view and download from this link.

Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D with hood

Tamron 28-105 / 2.8 276D turned out to be a truly huge lens, using filters with a diameter of 82 mm and a weight of 880 grams, which significantly affects when it is mounted on the camera. Native Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D, with a smaller focal length range, weighs even more - 935 grams. The lens is very well assembled, even in spite of its huge trunk, which extends during zooming and consists of two parts - there are no backlashes or any other reason to doubt poor build quality. Although I can find fault with the fact that from the side of the camera mount you can see the lens electronics - boards, wires and cables. The body is made of plastic, although very sturdy.

The focus and zoom ring are rubberized. The zoom ring simultaneously serves to switch to the 'Anti-Slip Mode' (from the English 'slip' - 'slip'), which does not allow the lens to spontaneously change the focal length under its own weight. To enable 'Anti-Slip Mode', simply pull the zoom ring towards the camera, while this mode does not lock the focal length of the lens, but simply makes the zoom ring travel tighter. If you turn off the 'Anti-Slip Mode', then the trunk of the lens pops out spontaneously (slides) very easily under its own weight, and the zoom ring begins to rotate more easily. I really liked the 'Anti-Slip Mode', it is really very useful and it is easy to turn it on and off. For active shooting with frequent focal length changes, it is recommended to turn off 'Anti-Slip Mode'.

The lens has a very fast auto focus. The focusing time from MDF to infinity and vice versa is the same as Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8GN ED. During auto focus, the focus ring rotates and cannot be touched. When you change the focal length, the focus ring extends forward along with the trunk of the lens. In fact, the focus ring is aligned with one of the inner sections of the lens that extend during zooming. During zooming, the front lens does not rotate, and the rear lens moves inside the lens body like a pump, driving air through the inside of the lens and camera.

Focusing is of the internal type, which is very pleasing :). In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates only a measly 60 degrees, so manual focusing is not very convenient. The minimum focusing distance is achieved at a focal length range of 70-85 mm and is 44 cm. On the lens barrel you can find a focusing distance scale in meters and feet, but there is very little practical use from it. When zooming in on the front of the lens barrel, two rows of numbers become visible, which show the MDF in meters and feet for the set focal length. With these numbers, the trunk of the lens looks much more solid and it seems that the lens can shoot 'super-macro', it's a pity, but it is not :). The maximum magnification ratio is only 1: 4.7 and is achieved at 85mm focal length.

The lens can use the Tamron 1C4FH Japan bayonet hood, which is mounted on special grooves near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the reverse position for transportation.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the value F / 22, after which it is fixed by a special small button-lock, which is located to the left of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses.

As befits a good professional lens, its aperture consists of 9 blades and closes down to f / 22 across the entire focal length range. The petals form regular polygons, which practically correspond to a circle in the out-of-focus area (at least there are no obvious 'nuts' in the out-of-focus area).

Nikolai, who sent me a lens for review, has two similar models, one of them is noticeably worse than the other, because we can say that the image quality with Tamron 28-105 / 2.8 276D can vary greatly depending on the instance.

The lens that I visited on my review pleasantly surprised me and in some cases showed excellent image quality. The only serious drawback that I noticed was a very weak sharpness at the edges and corners of the frame when using 105 mm focal length. Vignetting, distortion and chromatic aberration turned out to be much less serious than I expected. And the best part is that if you close the aperture at least to f / 4.0, then in the center of the frame the lens creates a very sharp image across the entire focal length range. And also - the lens holds very well in side and backlight. When shooting, in some situations, the lens did not see the sun in the frame at all. But, of course, small and large glare can still be obtained :). As for me, this lens has a pretty interesting 'pattern'.

The Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D has indeed proven itself to be one of the highest quality professional lenses, as evidenced by the letters 'SP' (Super Performance) on its body and showed a very high quality level of assembly, and most importantly - good level of image quality. Overall, I was very pleased with this lens, and its maximum aperture of F / 2.8 can be used for a number of photographic tasks. Apparently the aspherical and 'Tamron LD' glass elements are doing their job well :).

Yes, I “screwed up”, in principle, on someone else's opinion about my photographic heights - I am myself a judge and an accused, so I don’t need to arrange here who is who. I think everyone has the right to their own opinion, but here it seems to interfere with your life.
And yet - when you accuse a person of something, even if it is an incorrect statement, you have to quote a specific quote, otherwise the Earth is round - you can meet around the corner.

Lelyak is an honored photographer. On another site, I like his photographs. I download some for a mastery sample! But I also like this forum site. Very good photo reviews! I will say that the pictures of Arkady are magnificent. The advice from the author of the criticism is correct. We need to take pictures more often. But the form of expression is useless. You can be more polite, colleagues.

What did I annoy? I write a couple of posts in the subject and mainly with questions, not with
"The only correct answers." Well, sometimes I answer questions, if I know the answer, so Arkady himself asked about it. And I have pictures of them https://yadi.sk/d/FPO61rUPbrCeq

Dmitry, no one annoyed anyone: if on the street, just like that, the first stranger he meets tells you a few unpleasant words, then with these words he gave a characteristic exclusively to himself. Radozhiva is a club of interests, you come in in the evening, after a hard day, read a good review, looked at good photos, saw the comments of long-familiar people in absentia, read it, was glad, and then someone appears :). The comments to this review reminded me of a long-heard story about the first trip to England of a song and dance ensemble of the USSR Navy, in the 60s (sailors were taken to England to dance "bull's-eye" :)). The morning of a London hotel, a lobby, people are sitting, who are reading the newspaper, who are drinking coffee with a cigarette, some are watching TV, the old bw with ptk still. An atmosphere of calmness and prosperity prevails. Two Soviet dancers in pea jackets descend into the hall, go up to the TV, stand in front of it, covering it to everyone who is watching, and begin to switch channels (with their hands, with the handle on the ptk). One channel, the second, the third (and all the channels are in an incomprehensible language), after a short viewing of all the channels, they with the words: "show x..not any!", Turn off the TV and leave the hotel. The locals are in deep shock, the curtain :) On my own I would add - oh, Les Podervyansky is right in his version of Hamlet :)

The lens is interesting; but how universal it does not fit too well, although it was thought of as such. This is probably why it was discontinued. For crop it is generally useless, but for full-frame people there are better options now, although much more expensive.

Anonymous, since this site has caused you such a bathhurt, go anonymize to another place. It is you who think that you are mocking at others, but in fact you look like an annoying, squeamish dog, which is a pity to kick.

Anonymous is right about something)) Arkady is honored and respected - well done, he gives valuable information clearly, accessible and understandable! Good afternoon Yarkiy, you wrote that it was me who introduced myself by other names and an anonymous author. In fact, I haven't posted anything here since I got banned. And now I would not go here to write if you did not remember me in bad words. Because I am generally afraid to write anything here, because a heap of stones is flying at once and the rivers of g ... vna are pouring in my address (it is possible that they will pour now). And now I asked a friend of a computer technician to help me enter this site. So I ask that you, and other residents of this forum, do not think that I am writing nasty things here. I have already finally decided on a set of my technique thanks to this good site, and therefore I only go to Radozhiva as a reader to laugh at the comments of some members of the forum, and to see what rarity Arkady was still observing. To be honest, it's a pity that Radozhiva, because of some people permanently residing here, turns from a serious site for reviews of photographic equipment into something like “RzhuNimAgu” with very funny sayings in the comments.

only if he apologizes to everyone and in public!

        • Yarkiya

It will not help, the one who realizes and admits his mistakes or wrongness really apologizes. And those who are seething with “righteous anger” are only driving for show.

          • Exhausted

Everyone here is seething with “righteous anger.” Everyone is his own. Some are excellent filmmakers, others are theorists from God, and others want to become both. We bet, we are angry, but we need to be kinder….

            • Do_Oraemon

Let Arkady make the following post: “Petition for Unblocking Trekhsotkovich” In the comments we leave “For” or “Against”. Which option will pick up more, it will be :-)

              • Arkady Shapoval

Trekhsotkovich himself in Skype wrote to me that he does not want to. The question is closed.

  • Andrei

The train left, but I will say: what - some are seething with righteous anger? Do they talk about their taxes?
If a person has not removed masterpieces. then you can’t talk? Here, technology is discussed, not creativity.
Better schnapps to drink? And where does such snobbery come from? Do not like it, so how are you going to get excited here?
Do not read. Rejoice that you are not like that and do not bother others to live. Thanks to Arkady for his work and patience. Sorry for the replay.

Arkady, good day. I would like to clarify one point. I have this lens, I have a Nikon D7000 crop, and here on it the lens gives a very bad picture. Soapy everything, as if missed with focus. On aperture 4.5 and more, the problem disappears on the focal length up to 50mm, if you use 105mm and open the aperture below 11, then that's it, the guard. so my question is, can a lens that was developed for a full frame do this on crop, or does my lens in itself be bad? I’m just thinking about either a carcass on ff or a lens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Small-pixel crop is one problem, and the second is that these lenses are too sensitive to the variation in quality between copies.

      • Alexander

That is, it turns out that it makes no sense for me to test it for ff? It turns out that bad :(

        • Arkady Shapoval

Well, take a look at what the FF does, business then.

  • Alexander

Good day everyone! I am planning to purchase this lens for Sony SLT-A99. In this regard, the question is - are there any Sony owners here, please write down how the lens behaves on cameras of this brand? Today I'm going to watch it. They sell for 12000 or for 13000 with a polaric and a protective filter. Model 176D (red Aspherical lettering on the case).
Has anyone else had experience shooting on this glass on a crop or a full frame? I will be glad to prompt answers.

  • anonym

Thank you so much for the review!

  • Dmitriy

    Good day to all.
I have this lens for canon
On the lens, I can say the following:
A very good idea and a completely good result. I got it is not new. But in good condition. I took a couple of shots and realized that I needed adjustment.
And this is done very simply:
It is necessary to unscrew the button, disconnect the cables, remove the electronics board. Further more okay.
Before us is the correcting lens unit, which is mounted on three ADJUSTABLE bolts.
Between this lens block are gaskets (there should be enough of them). Put on back button. And twist (tightening or loosening) with periodically putting on the camera we find the sharpest image with the largest digital zoom. Twist a thin length Phillips screwdriver very gently and a little chew. After the best result, we collect everything back.
Whatever backing or front focus is needed here play pads between the button accordion.

So this lens is very sharp at f 2,8. And 3.5 is almost a razor. Together with a beautiful pattern, it’s just a find. I don’t understand why sometimes they scold him.
I would be glad if someone comes in handy.

    P.S
Good forum. Very often I watch reviews. Many thanks to Arkady for the reviews.

    • Arkady Shapoval

And thank you for the good advice.

    • Gesha Exhale

Well, yes, it does IT easier! I read it twice already and couldn’t recall anything, I’ll have to print out your comment and do it in stages. Thank you. :)

    • Michael

Dmitry, if possible, could send several pictures on different focal points on f 2.8? going to buy, but with shipment, so there are reasonable fears naturally

I also recently became the owners of this lens. I am very pleased to use the Canon 5D. For a long time I looked closely at this lens, read reviews and asked the owners to send their photos without processing. Someone sent, someone ignored the request.
Yes, indeed the lens (I also have a 276D model) leaves a pleasant impression: sharp at open aperture at all focal lengths; nice drawing; not super fast autofocus, but accurate (!); natural color rendering; good contrast. Lens weight? It does not bother me at all - at such aperture and at such focal lengths it was surprising if the lens weighed lighter than its 880 grams))) Among the disadvantages - there is distortion, especially at a wide angle; there is weak vignetting at open aperture (absolutely non-critical); there is a drop in resolution at the edges of the frame (it is treated by tightening the aperture and you will be happy).

And he lathers with me until I close it to 4.5

I use this lens on D200. Great for the money. The practically new one cost $ 260 shipping from Japan. At F2.8, the software is of course present, but under certain conditions and tasks it brings its own charm. With F3.5, everything is already sharp. Those. for whom the main criterion in evaluating the lens is sharpness, I would say that this is Tamron 28-105mm 1: 3.5, which I think is not bad, considering its cost. With focusing, too, everything is fine, he “thinks” a little at dusk, everything is fast and accurate in the light. But most importantly, I like his drawing, there is something in it. And yes, I have version 176D.

I was interested in the price of Avito for this glass.
There are few offers and they ask for this glass, often unreasonable money.
For example, 30 and 42 (!) Thousand rubles. Cheaper than 25 thousand, I have not seen them.
In this situation, it is wiser to take a new (!) Warranty 24-120 / 4G, IMHO, if you do not have it.

    • Oleg

The space price, in Ukraine there is now for sale on the alder for 4500 UAH, this is at the current rate of 9000 rubles.

I have a camera lens of 28-105 tamr d300s in all modes, the camera constantly shoots at 2/8 aperture, and in manual mode too, although the aperture closes on the camera and readings but it is constantly at 2/8 what could beat the problem

  • Andrei

    Marking 176d

  • Alexey

Hello, Arkady. If you compare a picture (portrait, for example) between Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D and Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105 mm 1: 2.8 276D - which is more interesting and better in the picture?
    Thank you.

  • Anton

Hello Arkady! Thank you so much for the reviews! I would like to ask your opinion. I am using a Tamron 28-75 lens. After reading this review, the question arose - which one is better for wedding photography? Is the 28-105 inferior in quality and AF speed to the 28-75? Thanks in advance!

  • Kirill

Hello, but tell me, does it keep focusing on sharpness when zooming, or does focusing go astray?

  • sibsolo

I was amazed that even in such a narrow-profile branch, some Anonymous tried to breed the classic srach
I rarely write comments on this resource, more often I look at photos, read reviews. And at one time, the work of Arkady helped me stop at buying a Sigma 24-135 f / 2.8-4.5 (although Arkady himself does not really appreciate glass)
And now I'm looking at the Tamron 28-105 a / 2.8 ... and again largely thanks to the pictures of Arkady
    PS
I'm afraid that Comrade Anonymous here is throwing out something deeply of his own - sick, unrealized and little related to photography
    PS
I do not spread masterpieces, as I consider myself a craftsman of the middle hand)))

I have a version 176D lens, without a back-front focus. Quite sharp from 2.8, BUT, noticeably soft to 4, absolutely software disappears from 4.5. I don’t like bokeh, objects double in the background. In general, a successful acquisition, but it is quite possible I have a version with a marriage. Because here I have not seen such effects in the description.

  • Igor

Arkady, good afternoon. How do you advise? I want to purchase this lens for working on crop in conjunction with Nikon D7200. Will it go?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It’s hard to find a good 28-105, but on a 24MP crop and on F / 2.8 this old man will not be ice.

      • Igor

Thanks for the answer. I will look for something else. And of course I will turn to you for advice, if not against)

    • Pokemon

There are two pieces on Avito. One is older - 176d, and the other is newer - 276d. The second is more expensive - 19.500 Russian rubles ~ $ 300.
I watched the day before yesterday. Indeed, it may not suit the crop. I saw a video on youtube, where a person was not very lucky with such glass. It turned out to be soapy.
