There are three completely different Nikon '35 -105 / 3.5-4.5 AF 'class lenses:

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI) - The very first, produced from 1986 to 1991. It has a classic design, a plastic narrow focus ring. Optical design of 16 elements in 12 groups. You will find information about this lens here.
  2. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII) - The second version, made in the style of 'push-pull', has a rubberized and wider focus ring. It was produced from 1991 to 1994. Optical design of 16 elements in 12 groups. You will find information about this lens here.
  3. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 D (MKIII) - the third version, 'push-pull', but with internal focusing 'IF'. It was produced from 1994 to 2001. Unlike the first two models, it can transmit focus distance into the camera. Optical design of 16 elements in 12 groups, including aspherical elements. This model is presented in this review.

All three versions differ mechanically. The MKIII version looks very similar to MKII, but does not have a macro mode and a special button to enable it, and visually the new version is noticeably smaller than the previous one. You can quickly identify the version by the 'D' in the lens name.

Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 D (MKIII) is a good all-rounder of bygone times, with very good build quality and good image quality.

Review Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 D (MKIII)

For my review Nikon 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D (MKIII) came in very good condition, but it does not change focal length spontaneously under its own weight. In general, I really like the old Nikon lenses, they have a very durable body and have been made for centuries. In comparison, even new professional lenses sometimes seem like toys. Everything else, this Nikon 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D (MKIII) really liked the very small size, in height it is only a little bit more than the whale lens Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor. Nikon 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D (MKIII) weighs 415 grams and uses small filters with a standard diameter of 52 mm.

Nikon 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D (MKIII) design is classic for those times - 'push-pull': to change focal length, pull the front of the lens “towards you” or push “away from you”. At the same time, this is the 'correct push-pull', i.e. in the shortest position it has the smallest focal length, and in the longest - the largest (for example, Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 all the way around).

Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 D (MKIII)

Nikon 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D (MKIII) has fast auto focus. MDF is 85 cm and the maximum magnification factor is 1: 9.4. During auto focus, the focus ring rotates and cannot be touched.

The focusing ring is rubberized, its stroke is 60-70 degrees. It’s very good that the lens has focusing internal type Is a rarity for push-pull lenses. The lens has a scale for focusing distances in meters and feet, as well as one '35' mark for infrared work. Version MKII had two labels for working in the IR spectrum, but due to the use of aspherical elements in the MKIII optical scheme, the infrared spectrum does not shift at other focal lengths.

During zooming, the front lens does not rotate; the rear lens moves inside the lens. The zoom (piston) ring is also rubberized. In the picture below you can see the black screw, which serves as a mark for the lens docking with the camera :).

Further development of the 35-105 lens line has ceased. A good alternative to this lens can be Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D. Personally, I think that the Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 D (MKIII) and MKII (but not MKI) turned out to be very good lenses, given their very modest cost, they provide good image quality, assembly, are pleasant to use and deserve attention. And here is a series of lenses Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII) и Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI) I liked it a lot less because of weaker image quality.

Triple zoom (105/35 = 3 X) is enough for comfortable work. On full-format cameras, 35 mm focal lengths give a quite wide viewing angle, but when used on Nikon DX cameras, the lens loses its versatility a little and is poorly suited for indoor use.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens body; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the F / 22 value and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses.

Diaphragm The lens consists of seven petals that always form regular polygons.

The lens tolerates backlight and side light well, you need to make fun of it to get glare :). In the center of the frame there are no complaints about sharpness at any aperture values, and there are very few chromatic aberrations. The only thing that I didn’t like was that at some focal lengths there were strong drops in sharpness at the edges and corners of the image. MKII I did not notice this. But in general, Nikon 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D (MKIII) seemed to me slightly better than the previous version.

    Still sold his 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D.
A good lens and his condition was excellent, but somehow the soul did not lie to him.
Because rarely used, then sold and added took 28-105 / 3.5-4.5D, also in good condition. I will use it at full frame.

    Yesterday I bought one ideally.

I have been using it since 1998. An excellent lens. Now it stands on the Nikon D800, the sharpness is quite enough. I can advise you on the acquisition.
