Review Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8

The Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 is the first autofocus professional standard (focal length) fast zoom lens for Nikon cameras. At one time it became a continuation of the line of manual focusing lenses - Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.5 AI and AI-S.

Radozhiv already has an overview of its modification - Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8D (MKII)and therefore only differences between the first version of MKI (NON-D) and second version of MKII (D-type).

  1. The MKI version (shown in this review) was produced from 1987 to 1992. The MKII version was produced from 1992 to 2005 (according to some sources - up to 2007).
  2. Versions have different ring retainers aperture in the F / 22 position, the MK I has the usual latch button (it automatically locks the diaphragm ring when it is set to F / 22), the MK II has a switch button (you must manually switch its position to lock the ring).
  3. MKII updated optics enlightenment. The front MKII lens is more green in color and the MKI in yellow. I did not particularly notice the difference when working with side and backlight, maybe there is a difference in color reproduction.
  4. The versions have a slightly different case design. The main difference can be seen near the diaphragm ring, where there are differences in the assembly screws and their location. Also, the MKII version has a black screw on the bayonet side, which helps to quickly mount the lens on the camera (old Nikon lenses do not have a mark for mounting the lens on the camera as such).
  5. The MKI version does not know how to transmit the focusing distance to the camera and is'Non-d'lens (this is the main difference in lenses). This property is important for accurate metering. exposure, especially when shooting with modern flash units that work in TTL auto modes.
  6. Both versions are susceptible to fungal growth on one of the lens glues. All lenses are susceptible to the fungus, except for those whose serial numbers start with the number 7. The reason is simple - for one of the lenses glued organic glue was used, which eventually 'blooms'. Therefore, all MKI lenses are susceptible to fungus, and among the MKII you can find copies with an updated assembly on a new adhesive base that is not susceptible to fungus.
Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

On a full-frame camera, the lens is very, very good, only at F / 2.8 the sharpness at the edges subsides a little, and the lens is also weak with side light. Overall, this is a really 'professional toy', albeit quite old.

Comments: 67, on the topic: Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8

  • Yarkiya

200 dollars on ebee, perhaps I am worried, the picture really liked.

    • Do_Oraemon

That and $ 200 seems not so much on the one hand. I support. 24 fix is no less worth, for example.

    • Lynx

      better take the D version.

      • Oleg

Does it exist in nature? ..
The picture is magnificent, but to find such a lens without a fungus is almost impossible. And with a fungus, horror is afraid of backlight

        • Lynx

I'll tell you a secret - there is, moreover, its review is on this site, MORE THAN the link to this review is in plain text in this fresh review.

          • Oleg

tochnik. mixed up with 70-210 f4

      • Yarkiya

        This is by all means.

  • giorgi

Yes ! And the truth is a beautiful picture !!!

  • anonym

Yes, that’s nonsense! One third of photos, especially rose hips, cannot be distinguished from Industar-69.)

  • Dim

    I support, a good buy.

  • Peter Sh

Just a great lens. For me personally, the absence of D does not matter - with such lenses I use the flash in manual mode. Highly recommend.

  • Stepan

It doesn’t hold back control at all. Immediately sold after the purchase.

  • Ivan L

Stepan, if you follow your logic, then everyone does not keep up, and you are one in the leg ??? Or is the credo such in life, to say not like everyone else ??? But it’s a really nice and cheap lens. So what, that does not really hold back. Do you need to constantly shoot in contra or what? For that, he is good in all other cases, especially for such a price. Very and very decent glass. And as in Fujik with its 6 (12) mp, it's just wonderful. It is clear that there is MUCH better. But they cost WOW GO !!!!!

  • anonym

It is not clear why such disorders are caused by side light. There are large rubber hoods. I put it on and boldly take it off and walk happy.

I add, this lens reveals amazing opportunities in a bad light. If it’s completely dark and there’s a lot of movement in the frame, you can add a little flash and set the ISO in the region of 650-1000, depending on the carcass.

  • Vladimir

I looked at the photo in black and white, the pattern appeared. Arkady, and if you try to shoot with a filter (I don’t know which one to use). My Vivitar 70-200 produces a similar image, but there are no filters in the arsenal yet. I support Ananim (this lens reveals amazing opportunities in a bad light).

  • anonym

I am of course a layman in photography, but what does not suit the work with backlight with this lens? Two wonderful photographs of green leaves in the backlight, it seems they do not have artifacts that are striking, and the color is normal, or my skis do not ride on the asphalt? (although who knows, when I got the license, they said a complete color blind person - I confuse red and green, but they gave the rights))

  • Denis

Fungus is a fairly common occurrence for this lens, it occurs in the gluing of lenses after the diaphragm, as well as clouding of the lens unit in front of the diaphragm, look very carefully when buying, owned three such only “D”, two had jambs. The lens is disassembled very easily and glues are treated in the same way and grandfather's dust is blown out ... Although I do not advise those who do not have some experience and tools ... The quality of the picture is excellent, the colors are contrast, but the lens is not strong in the backlight. Happy shots to all.

    • Bassoon

What threatens lens clouding? Every second on ebee has haze, but they do not affect the picture. And how to treat gluing?

  • Peter Sh

What lenses are not afraid of backlight? For 2000 dollars not to offer.

    • Lynx

      Different

    • Bassoon

What does it mean to be afraid? If it's about highlights, circles and whitishness of the foreground or background, then I like to use it as an artistic technique ...

  • Denis

Macro lenses, 90 mm tokina for example. Everyone is afraid of just some kind of objective due to the constructiveness, they work better in the back. Nikon 80-200 does better too. Objectives are not for measuring them, but in order to shoot and the more you shoot, the more you understand what is missing…. but that's just my opinion….

    • Peter Sh

Thanks. What about Sigma and Tamron 80-200mm?

  • anonym

Sometimes a few shots on the lens are enough to understand that you need to try on another.

  • Alexey

35-70 I have a few years ... The picture is wonderful, modern glasses are not near ... His problems are classic for lenses designed for film ... The counter does not hold, but this is often solved ... We shoot with NEFs, they are also RAW, Photoshop Camera Raw add black level ...

  • Alexey

Of course, we must take the "D" version .. We have them in bulk in excellent condition in Primorye ... The price is 12-14 rubles ...

  • Dmitriy

And I would say that in some photos the bokeh is very nasty. The circle of confusion is actually not round, but annular. As a result, all branches double-triple, and bright dots dazzle in the background. If you shoot babies with soap bubbles, it should be cool. And so - rather for an amateur ..

    • Alexey

So it depends on what to compare with ... It has no analogues among the lenses of this price range ...

  • Alexey Korolev

The diaphragm latch button has another feature that many do not know about - it rotates 90 degrees, when the button is turned, the diaphragm lock is disabled by 22. To rotate it, you need to drown it all the way and turn it.

  • Serge

Hello ! I recently bought this one on ebee for experiments, I should come soon ... I took it from a good seller and BRAND NEW with a hood for 130 bucks
I think to experiment on d610
would someone explain in more detail how to put it on the d610 so as not to damage the ph
and yet no one knows how he behaves with a flash in the room?
    thank you

    • Arkady Shapoval

Just take and install. With a flash in TTL mode it can dull.

    • Lynx

WHERE?? where did you find it on ebee for 5,5 thousand rubles? passwords / attendance at the studio!

  • Boris

Arkady, is it true that this lens is all the same film and on a digital crop will give a front focus of 50-70 mm, my copy is slightly distorted at this focal length on the nikon d300?

    • Arkady Shapoval

And what does the back / front have to do with the fact that it is a film or non-film lens? The lens was developed for film cameras, if the d300 has focusing errors, then these are lens / camera problems, they are treated by alignment.

  • Andrei

And where does the information come from that the second version i.e. Serial number “D” after “7” not affected by fungus? Please specify the source

  • anonym

Tell me, but 5000 rubles. normal price for it?

    • Pastor

      Awesome! :)

      • anonym

Offered for 5 thousand, but the diaphragm does not change, only 2,8, will it stop me ???

        • Denis

          why is he so needed?

        • Pastor

And ... Well, it will interfere with something. Landscapes definitely cannot be removed. Here you need to look at two things - is it possible to fix the joint (and how much it will cost) and whether you need closed apertures (how good the lens is at 2.8). In general, such glasses are taken for the sake of 2.8, so in a sense there is nothing terrifying in the impossibility of covering. But on the other hand, this is still not a purely portrait lens, but rather a reportage high-aperture zoom, and in a report it is often necessary to cover a hole. In general, taking into account this jamb, the price already seems quite clear. It may make sense to meet with the seller, have a look at a copy, see if there are any other jambs and click on different focal points. Then at home to see if you are satisfied with the sharpness that the lens gives at 2.8, whether the vignette is not embarrassing or something else. And then make a decision.
Well and again, it is quite possible that the diaphragm is simply stuck and a simple inexpensive repair will fix the situation.

          • anonym

            Thanks for the advice!!!

  • Michael

    Kind.
At the same time I had MK1 and MK2. The difference is that MK2 is actually lighter, i.e., with the same aperture, the camera's automation sets the shutter speed faster

  • anonym

And compared to 24-85 which is better?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The sharpest is the last one with VR, it is even recommended for use on Nikon D800E and the like.

  • Vladimir Kuz

But how is he on the crop ??? I think how he will behave on the D300
