Review Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8

The Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 is the first autofocus professional standard (focal length) fast zoom lens for Nikon cameras. At one time it became a continuation of the line of manual focusing lenses - Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.5 AI and AI-S.

Radozhiv already has an overview of its modification - Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8D (MKII)and therefore only differences between the first version of MKI (NON-D) and second version of MKII (D-type).

  1. The MKI version (shown in this review) was produced from 1987 to 1992. The MKII version was produced from 1992 to 2005 (according to some sources - up to 2007).
  2. Versions have different ring retainers aperture in the F / 22 position, the MK I has the usual latch button (it automatically locks the diaphragm ring when it is set to F / 22), the MK II has a switch button (you must manually switch its position to lock the ring).
  3. MKII updated optics enlightenment. The front MKII lens is more green in color and the MKI in yellow. I did not particularly notice the difference when working with side and backlight, maybe there is a difference in color reproduction.
  4. The versions have a slightly different case design. The main difference can be seen near the diaphragm ring, where there are differences in the assembly screws and their location. Also, the MKII version has a black screw on the bayonet side, which helps to quickly mount the lens on the camera (old Nikon lenses do not have a mark for mounting the lens on the camera as such).
  5. The MKI version does not know how to transmit the focusing distance to the camera and is'Non-d'lens (this is the main difference in lenses). This property is important for accurate metering. exposure, especially when shooting with modern flash units that work in TTL auto modes.
  6. Both versions are susceptible to fungal growth on one of the lens glues. All lenses are susceptible to the fungus, except for those whose serial numbers start with the number 7. The reason is simple - for one of the lenses glued organic glue was used, which eventually 'blooms'. Therefore, all MKI lenses are susceptible to fungus, and among the MKII you can find copies with an updated assembly on a new adhesive base that is not susceptible to fungus.
Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 2.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII)

On a full-frame camera, the lens is very, very good, only at F / 2.8 the sharpness at the edges subsides a little, and the lens is also weak with side light. Overall, this is a really 'professional toy', albeit quite old.

Arkady, please tell me, is it only in your photographs that this lens gives such a weak sharpness or is it generally unclear like that in itself?

I look that every second photo looks as if past focus. o_o

  • Ivan

I bought this one with my hands, what can I say? The sharpness is not stable, and blurring of the background more often brings out of balance, a mess. Yes, I got some good shots when the sun was in the back after 16 hours. to shoot something other than family vacations is now scary. I’ll try to hand over for repair, maybe it’s simply faulty.

    • Peter Sh.

And you enlighten him with a flashlight in the dark. Maybe there the lenses are cloudy, with a coating or something else.
In addition, for example, my copy focuses further on 35mm and closer to 70mm. And no AF tuning here helps, understandably.

  • Ivan

    I’ll say one thing, it’s definitely lighter than 35 \ 2

  • anonym

All the same, I could not resist koment. I bought the first model on Avito for 12 000 rubles. I bought and I am not overjoyed. holds with a hood. Very sharp on all focal lenses. I haven’t reached the portraits yet, but otherwise good. I shoot on d7100, I think it will fully open at full frame.

  • Sergei

    Arkady, hello!
In the review, you write that 2.8D with serial number 7 * is without organic glue. Question: "And starting with the number 8 *?"
Those. only a series of 7 * without organics or subsequent without it too?

  • 777

Has anyone had experience treating this glass for fungus / mold?
Is it realistic to drag yourself to a service? And if in the service, then how much money can they take for this?

  • Georgy

    s_l1600_1 s_l1600

    Lens with 7xxxxx serial
Apparently, with the replacement of glue in later versions, not everything is so simple ...

    • 777

      George, thank you!
And how to understand when examining when buying a used one from the hands: did the curved-handed craftsmen clean the glass from the fungus or not?

      • Georgy

The fasteners are very soft, guaranteed to be deformed + scratches around the fasteners.

        Useless fact:
Even direct-handed people will leave marks on the varnish inside, which will be visible when disassembling.

        • 777

Thank you for such a quick and detailed answer.
Good luck and good to you, George!

    • anonym

Most likely it is a fungus or mold. In versions with a serial number less than 7, “Canadian balsam” was used in the gluing of the lens unit, which gradually became cloudy over time and gave a uniform clouding over the entire area of the lens unit. It gave a kind of soft effect. Contrast and a little sharpness fell. the magnitude of the effect depends on the degree of turbidity.

  • Dmitriy

Thanks for the useful info on the lens)

  • Basil

    Oil

  • Dim

I took it to Ebei from Japan, with more or less clean lenses. I put it on Nikon D700 and was terribly disappointed, white haze, haze. I put it off until better times, there was time, I recently enlightened it with an ultraviolet and put it on the D300. I don't know what happened: either the arms straightened, or the magic rays helped. Much better. But as many write, there are such mutual positions of the direction of the lens and the rays of the sun, when the image is useless. On the other hand, it doesn't cost much and it's just interesting to look at another picture.

    • Ernie

I want to say that without disassembling and processing each lens, there will be no benefit from UV irradiation - glass blocks ultraviolet radiation.

  • LDS

Arkady, can I ask a question? There is a desire to purchase Nikon 35-70 AF-D. They offer me a lens with a serial number that starts with 8 (eight). Can there be problems with the fungus or some other features? I understand that the 8th series will be newer than the 7th.

    • Arkady Shapoval

may need to be looked at carefully

  • Skiferok

I have 35-70 2.8 of the first version. They write that he is sharp from an open dirk. I have F 2.8-7. On the sides of the frame. The center is sharp. At f8 the picture is sharp all over the field. Is it like that for everyone, is this the work of the lens?

    • B. R. P.

Watching what to shoot and how. In the open, it cannot be sharp from “fence to lunch”.

      • Skiferok

        Filmed the landscape.
