Industar-69 2.8 / 28

Industar-69 2.8 / 28

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 is a lens from the Soviet scaled camera of the Chaika brand. There are several variants of the Industar-69, so on the first models of the Chaika cameras there was a fixed version of the lens, and on the Chaika-2, -2М, 3 models it was installed as shown in this review.

The lens has an М39x1 thread, but, unlike other rangefinder lenses, its focal distance is shorter than usual and amounts to 27.5 mm. And it is also designed to work with a frame of 18x24. In modern terms, it is only suitable for crop cameras with an APS-C sensor, and when used on full-frame cameras, it will give the strongest vignetting.

I used Industar-69 2.8 / 28 on a full frame camera Canon EOS 5D with two adapters: М39-М42 and М42-Canon EOS. In such a combination it is possible to shoot only macro (due to the mismatch of the flange focal lengths - for a SLR camera it is almost twice as large) and at the same time without vignetting (due to the short focusing distance). In this operating mode, the focusing ring completely loses its functionality, and focusing is done by moving the camera towards the subject.

Industar-69 2.8 / 28, of course, is best used with modern mirrorless cameras :). I have a rangefinder camera 'Zorkiy-4', but due to the fact that it has a focal distance of 28.8 mm (more than that of Industar-69), I gave up the idea of using it on a rangefinder and 'shooting' at random.

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 when focusing on infinity

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 is very light and small, even smaller than crumbs Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50... The lens barrel is completely metal. There is a focusing distance scale in meters on the body. It's funny, but additional signs are drawn on it: 'tree with a house', 'group of people' and 'person', it reminded me of the automatic modes 'night portrait', 'sports', etc. on the main control wheel of modern digital-SLR cameras :). Apparently, these designations allow you to quickly set the desired focusing distance (focus) when shooting such scenes.

The minimum focusing distance is 80 cm. During focusing, the front lens rotates and the trunk of the lens barely noticeably moves forward. Also on the body there is a depth of field scale for aperture values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6 8, 11, 16. The lens can use tiny filters with a diameter of 22.5 mm.

The aperture control ring is recessed near the front lens and is very uncomfortable because of this. When closing / opening the diaphragm, you constantly rotate, in addition to the aperture ring itself, the focusing ring. And in order to set the desired value of the F-number, it is necessary to turn the lens over towards you with the front lens. No aperture preset ring. The diaphragm ring rotates smoothly without fixing at intermediate values. It's a pity, but the lens has only 5 aperture blades, what kind of 'nuts' are obtained from this, see the sample photos :).

Personally, it always amuses me to install some simple lens on the camera and try to squeeze something worthwhile from it. In this case, with Industar-69 2.8 / 28 we get the opportunity to use a fast wide-angle macro lens for mere pennies :).

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 and Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 and Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Due to the fact that I used the lens for other purposes (on a full-frame SLR camera instead of a half-format scale camera), it is extremely difficult for me to judge the image quality. I can only note that the lens does not tolerate back and side light, filling with halos, rainbows and covering the whole picture with a veil.

Fabulous photos turned out) Arkady, thank you very much for the cool review as always :)

  • Anton Vladimirovich

The review is good, the photo is all super.

  • Oleg Muravitsky

I have a Seagull-3 with such a lens, I tried it with a mirrorless Samsung NX11. For a macro, it’s a perfectly suitable lens; it’s easy to redo it for infinity, but it makes no sense, because the picture quality is very average, it’s not worth the hassle.

  • Yarkiya

In the last photo, the bokeh form is not nuts, but rather Soviet quality marks, apparently a party special order. :))

  • Vasily Artamonov

Arkady, you need to acquire a mirrorless mirror, at least used.

I agree with the camera! The review is interesting, the photos are beautiful!

  • Dim

Cool photos. It’s hard to believe that photographs were taken with such a lens.

  • Gene jb

I always carry it with me. He doesn’t take up space, but good macro results. Yes, and for free.

  • Do_Oraemon

And Th, quite atmospheric pictures turned out. No photoshop is needed to get the very ambient :) I also have "Seagull-2". Soviet "crop" :) But the film saving came out - 72 frames whole!

  • Zmitser

the focus scale is cool with portrait, group portrait and landscape icons.

Arkady how to use this lens specifically for macro on Nikon systems, at full frame (D600). There is an adapter Nikon-m42. I can buy either an M42-M39 ring or a Nikon-M39 adapter. What are your recommendations?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It can be so and so, no difference.

      • Denis

Thanks! Photo as always on the verge of fiction). All the same, I switched from D5100 to D600 (D700 was sold, so it was not fate to buy). And I missed the video reviews a bit, will there be more?

  • Oleg

Yes, I even tried to just attach it to the bayonet mount and take a picture of the viewing angle. Of course, it’s impressive. It’s a bit narrow with macro rings. Of course, it’s probably worth getting the adapters. Arkady thanks for the review

  • Vadim

On the Knax, it works great as a makrik and as a shirik.

  • Denis

I shoot with a mirrorless Sony Nex (the lens was redone for the working segment of Sony, there is infinity). I compared the Industar 69 lens with lenses: Albinar 28mm f / 2.8 (Korea), Sears 28mm f / 2.8 MC (Korea), World 10A 28mm f / 3.5 and native Sony E 18-55. Conclusion: the best result was shown by the native whale 18-55, the second place was taken by Industar 69, the third place was taken by Sears 28mm.
In fact, the Indus 69 turned out to be quite an interesting lens. The lens shows a good result in terms of sharpness at f / 11 - 16 (especially in the center, things are worse at the edges). And interestingly, the photo taken by Indus is wider than the photo taken with another 28mm lens.

    • Or

      Those. Has the Albinar 28mm f / 2.8 performed really bad? Makinon 28 / 2.8 used?

      • Denis

No, I didn’t use it. Shot a Beroflex MC 28mm f / 2.8 (good glass). It turned out to be better in sharpness than the Sears MC 28mm f / 2.8. But now I bought Olympus OM G.Zuiko 28mm f / 3.5, and interest fell off in all of the above lenses (although I use Beroflex periodically).

      • Denis

Albinar proved disgusting, there is no sharpness on f / 2.8.

  • Sergei

Litter for the link, a test of this lens on Sony Nex http://www.onemorelens.com/2011/07/industar-69-28mm-f28.html

    • Arkady Shapoval

I am always happy to find useful links.

on the micro it is like a staff, about 28x2 = 56 ... the center is sharp ... the edges are floating ... but this is not always bad, and so 2.8-decent aperture-discrete devices on the micro at the prices is horrible, but you can play around, you just have to choose from several pieces ... you can find quite high quality

    • ferik

and why, as a staffer, it seems like it’s not necessary to multiply, the working segments almost coincide.

  • Dave qwerty

I bought myself a couple of months ago, but haven’t removed anything yet, I’m resolving the issue with the adapter. Details on the link.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the author for his work. Several times helped to make a choice. Thanks and good luck!

Hello ... I beg your pardon, I just noticed ...

Put it on Olympus. Had a few, all gave a bad color, like a soap box from the 90s, from blue and magenta. There are color swims blue from light areas to black, this is not chromaticity, this is swims. In general, on f8-f11 it is quite sharp on the Olympus even in the corners, they are best suited for bw street photos, it is perfect there. I do not recommend using color. By the way on f2.8 twists the background;) In the macro is sharp.

Of the few tested, I can say that there was a spread of sharpness in the corners, in the center they are sharp, and the corners are weak, so I left myself the most comfy and use it occasionally.

    • ferik

and on Olympus 4/3 and focuses on infinity? I didn’t want something.

  • ferik

Good day. Putting this miracle on the Panasonic GX7, it’s built without focusing on infinity, from a meter to the focus of the focusing circle a couple of degrees. having tried without a crossover a little closer to the lens, having appeared the focus. With a good way, we are able to focus on perfection by 30 cm, at the end of one ten, having achieved a focus on perfection, the focus has been minimally by 1,6 cm. A very cool thing for macro. I remade this to infinity (on the NX, I had to undermine), but he doesn't really show himself in the middle and background. But the macro from it is special. And it's very convenient to shoot. The living creatures are not afraid of him at all)) Or maybe they just disdain to dump ... Covering themselves with a DSLR, they manage to approach almost point-blank. Recommend. Cheap and fun

  • Yura

Arkady, you made a marvelous array of reviews. Thank you!
I really like the “abnormal” bokeh of Industar-69, tell me, have you seen something like this with full-frame lenses? Ideally, a wide-angle, which will stand on the sony alpha.
    Thank you!
