Industar-69 2.8 / 28

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 is a lens from the Soviet scaled camera of the Chaika brand. There are several variants of the Industar-69, so on the first models of the Chaika cameras there was a fixed version of the lens, and on the Chaika-2, -2М, 3 models it was installed as shown in this review.

The lens has an М39x1 thread, but, unlike other rangefinder lenses, its focal distance is shorter than usual and amounts to 27.5 mm. And it is also designed to work with a frame of 18x24. In modern terms, it is only suitable for crop cameras with an APS-C sensor, and when used on full-frame cameras, it will give the strongest vignetting.

I used Industar-69 2.8 / 28 on a full frame camera Canon EOS 5D with two adapters: М39-М42 and М42-Canon EOS. In such a combination it is possible to shoot only macro (due to the mismatch of the flange focal lengths - for a SLR camera it is almost twice as large) and at the same time without vignetting (due to the short focusing distance). In this operating mode, the focusing ring completely loses its functionality, and focusing is done by moving the camera towards the subject.

Industar-69 2.8 / 28, of course, is best used with modern mirrorless cameras :). I have a rangefinder camera 'Zorkiy-4', but due to the fact that it has a focal distance of 28.8 mm (more than that of Industar-69), I gave up the idea of using it on a rangefinder and 'shooting' at random.

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 when focusing on infinity

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 is very light and small, even smaller than crumbs Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50... The lens barrel is completely metal. There is a focusing distance scale in meters on the body. It's funny, but additional signs are drawn on it: 'tree with a house', 'group of people' and 'person', it reminded me of the automatic modes 'night portrait', 'sports', etc. on the main control wheel of modern digital-SLR cameras :). Apparently, these designations allow you to quickly set the desired focusing distance (focus) when shooting such scenes.

The minimum focusing distance is 80 cm. During focusing, the front lens rotates and the trunk of the lens barely noticeably moves forward. Also on the body there is a depth of field scale for aperture values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6 8, 11, 16. The lens can use tiny filters with a diameter of 22.5 mm.

The aperture control ring is recessed near the front lens and is very uncomfortable because of this. When closing / opening the diaphragm, you constantly rotate, in addition to the aperture ring itself, the focusing ring. And in order to set the desired value of the F-number, it is necessary to turn the lens over towards you with the front lens. No aperture preset ring. The diaphragm ring rotates smoothly without fixing at intermediate values. It's a pity, but the lens has only 5 aperture blades, what kind of 'nuts' are obtained from this, see the sample photos :).

Personally, it always amuses me to install some simple lens on the camera and try to squeeze something worthwhile from it. In this case, with Industar-69 2.8 / 28 we get the opportunity to use a fast wide-angle macro lens for mere pennies :).

Industar-69 2.8 / 28 and Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Due to the fact that I used the lens for other purposes (on a full-frame SLR camera instead of a half-format scale camera), it is extremely difficult for me to judge the image quality. I can only note that the lens does not tolerate back and side light, filling with halos, rainbows and covering the whole picture with a veil.

    I fell into the hands of Industar-69M 2.8 / 28, rechecked - the thread is exactly M42x1.

      Maybe M39-M42 is screwed up.

I purchased this lens from Sony Nex3. I would like to share my experience of fitting the rear section to the M39 / Sony nex adapter. Maybe someone will help and he will not cut the threads on the lens (horror). I don’t know about the others, but my Industar 69, after all the well-known alterations to infinity, did not focus, there was not enough millimetric for deepening. The M39 adapter is 1.3 mm moved away from the standard piece of pancake. In order not to cut the lens, I used a spare part from the Chaika 3 camera itself. I unscrewed the lens seat from the carcass (mounted with 4 screws), then sharpened it to the inner diameter of the M39 / Nex adapter and inserted it into the adapter instead of the standard sleeve. Since it is a couple of millimeters thinner, the lens has successfully deepened with a margin, and now infinity and, in general, the focal length are easily caught by twisting the helicode. At about 80 cm, it catches focus and is close to falling out (I removed the limiters), so be careful here. Something like that

Fine! I did the same, I used the part from the Seagull, and in order not to screw the lens to the end, I laid a thick braided wire under it - gradually screwing the lens, caught the “infinity” and left it in this position, it holds on quite tightly and now it’s even problematic to unscrew it ( which is good, because it is not necessary)))

And I asked a relative at the factory to grind off the M39-NEX adapter by 1.3 mm, and the lens began to focus to infinity. True, now this adapter is only for this lens, it is not suitable for others, but sometimes you can sacrifice one adapter to leave the lens in its original form :)

You can take a landing ring with a 5v fed, wind it onto the lens, remove the native ring from the Chinese adapter and insert the lens. It tightens the screws and we get focus even beyond infinity, but with the stops on the lens removed, you can get any distance. You can get confused and set the distance using the tightening screws, but this is optional)))

And no one worked with Chaika herself?
I have a question about the film rewind head.

Fitting the working length to the range finder (Zorkiy/FED) is not difficult at all - this allows you to do this with a regular frame.
But I couldn’t cope with vignetting - even with aperture, the corners of the frame at infinity are just black.
Despite finishing the frame of the front lens with a file.
I must say, outside the regular “half-frame” the lens is very bad.
    That is, no miracles ....

For those who decide to buy the same pancake for themselves, you need to consider two things: firstly, do not count on ringing sharpness. It is possible to get into it, but it is difficult - it is only necessary to slightly scroll the helicoid by a millimeter, and the object of capture is no longer in sharpness. And secondly, in most cases, even if the picture is sharp, it will be soft and there is not much contrast. But here you need to make allowances for the budget of the lens and its age.
In general, this is a good ultra-budget wide, which is quite possible to shoot even now, keeping in mind the fact that frames may not be sharp, and in some cases, the fingers of the right hand can fall into the corner of the frame (here you need to adapt, especially when shooting on Fuji with his "film" carcass design).

  • Sergei

Tell me how to tune it under the seagull.
In general, I took it apart to lubricate the mechanics, assembled it, but due to inexperience I lost where it was installed.
    Most likely moved the helicoid.
I'm trying to restore to sony a7 through the m39-nex adapter.
It seems to work, infinity, MDF, but the aperture scale shifts.
Will such a composition correspond to shooting with a seagull? After all, his working length is not like on standard m39.

    • Adrian

aperture fully open the mark at 2,8 after clamping the focus ring to the helicoid (with your hands to the table, for example) and alternately tighten the “locks” nuts. The main thing is not to overdo it too much! I hope I suggested something. be patient, study the lens over time, you yourself will guess.

I got this version of I69, as I understand it’s an early one with an M40.5 filter thread, the focusing scale has only three designations (1,2,3). Where 3 is infinity, and 1 is mdf. While it’s lying there, I want to give it to a friend for adaptation.
