Tamron AF 28-300mm 1 review: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC (lens serial number from 009877 review)

Tamron 28-300 mm lenses:

And there are still two copies of the A06 / A061 lens under the brand name 'Promaster Spectrum':

  • Promaster Spectrum 7XR AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 Macro
  • Promaster Spectrum 7XR EDO AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 Macro

Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC for Nikon has not only a very long name, but also a huge zoom ratio. And if the owners of digital compact cameras cannot be surprised at all with a tenfold zoom, then for full-format optics this figure is very high. The large zoom ratio allows you to designate the Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20 as super(-uper)-universal lens :). True, usually super-zooms for SLR cameras, especially from third-party manufacturers, have the super-poor image quality that I have already seen on a similar model - Tamron AF Aspherical XR DI LD [IF] 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 Macro (DI) A06 for Nikon... But Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20 turned out to be not so bad, and sometimes even quite suitable for amateur photography :).

A large zoom magnification took it from the lens aperture, the maximum aperture is F / 3.5-6.3, and this is worse than many regular zooms, in which it is F / 3.5-5.6 (one third more stop at the long end). The aperture in f / 5.6 is still available at 100 mm focal length, but already starting at 135 mm, the maximum aperture drops to f / 6, and in the range from 200 to 300 mm is only available with f / 6.3.

Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC on the bayonet side

Despite the large zoom ratio, when folded (at 28mm) the lens is quite compact and, moreover, lightweight, weighing only 555 grams. The Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20 has a metal mount and a decent build, but I still have a few complaints about the build. Firstly, the zoom ring has a slight backlash, and secondly, when zooming, the lens sometimes wedges in the 70mm position, and thirdly, when working with the lens, it feels like it is about to fall apart. Feelings, sensations, but at the same time the trunk of the lens does not play and does not move out under its own weight, and in case it does happen over time, you can find a 'Lock' button on the body that locks the lens at 28 mm focal length.

Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC at 300mm focal length

The zoom and focus ring is rubberized. Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20 has a built-in focus motor and will fit all Nikon cameras. It’s a pity, but automatic focusing with the lens is very slow, besides it uses an ordinary micro-motor and is pretty noisy. To everything else, I want to add that the nature of the motor noise is somewhat similar to the moaning of some kind of tormented animal :(.

During autofocus, the focusing ring rotates and cannot be touched (you can forget about the constant manual focus control). The lens barrel has a 'AF / MF' focus mode switch, for manual focusing, be sure to turn on the 'MF' mode, otherwise the lens may be damaged. In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates 60 degrees, manual focusing is not very pleasant.

But the focusing of the internal type lens, in addition, when changing the focal length, the trunk of the lens only lengthens, but does not rotate. During zooming, the rear lens moves and creates a tangible vacuum cleaner effect. MDF is only 49cm and at the same time you can get macro images with a maximum magnification of 1: 3, which is very, very good for such a super zoom.

A little bit about F / 6.3. The instructions for most SLR cameras indicate that they can normally focus only when using optics with a maximum relative aperture of at least 1: 5.6. The exact list of Nikon cameras that can work with optics, darker than F / 5.6, can be found in the section 'Nikon focusing systems', and the exact list of Canon cameras is in the section 'Canon Focusing Systems'. With good lighting, the camera always has a small margin and it can focus with darker lenses than expected. My practice has shown that you can easily shoot on Canon 350D with the dark Tamron 18-270mm 1: 3.5-6.3 Di II LD [IF] Aspherical VC Macro B003E for Canon и Tamron AF 18-200mm f / 3.5-6.3 (IF) Aspherical LD XR DiII Macro A14 for Canon. Also, with Nikon D700 и Tamron AF Aspherical XR DI LD [IF] 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 Macro (DI) A06 for Nikon I didn't have any particular focusing problems either. But with the Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20 I noticed that at the 200-300mm range, in low light conditions or even just in the shade of trees, the autofocus 'fades' and the lens crawls back and forth in vain. can 'catch on' for nothing. I attribute the 'freeze' focus precisely to the fact that D700, on which the lens was tested, does not support working with lenses darker than F / 5.6.

Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC with transport hood

With a little maximum aperture the lens is helped by the built-in Tamron VC - 'Vibration Compensation' - 'shake compensation'. The gimbal works really well indeed. There is a switch on the body responsible for its operation - 'VC ON / OFF'. The stabilizer turns on when you press the focus button (usually half-pressing the shutter release button). As soon as you press the shutter button, for a moment the picture in the viewfinder shudders and you can hear the sound from the activation of the stabilizer. The same happens when the stabilizer stops working. This is normal and should not be intimidated.

Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC

The lens uses a small Tamron DA20 lens hood, which is mounted in special slots. The lens hood can be installed in the reverse position for transport, but at 28mm focal length in this state, access to the focus ring will be lost. The lens uses filters with a diameter of 67mm. I want to note that in general, the design of all Tamron universal lenses is very similar, from afar you can never tell exactly what kind of lens is in front of you :). On Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 42-450mm.

A huge number of special 'super-elements' have been crammed into the optical design of the lens, which are designed to improve image quality, make the lens more compact and cope with high zoom factors. You can see the optical scheme of the lens in the official brochure. But still, from Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20 don't expect something good... The lens is very weak in the 200-300mm range, especially at open apertures, and at the wide angle, the corners and edges of the image are very bad. Nevertheless, you can shoot with Tamron 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 VC A20, the question is - is it necessary?

The Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC is a fairly lightweight universal lens for full-frame cameras with a huge zoom ratio and built-in stabilizer. But whether such a lens is needed on your camera is a topic for another conversation.

Tamron is like a tamron. There is nowhere to go.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Classic superzoom from Tamron.

  • Alexander Trekhsotkovich

TamPon is the worst lens manufacturer. Again, this is my personal opinion, and I do not impose it on anyone here. Those who do not agree with this, please do not clog the thread with comments. But personally, I have not yet met a single normal outstanding glass of this brand. All of their glass gives soap at the exit. The same Sigma and Tokina are much better than Tampon, but at a price about the same.

What does it mean not to clog if you do not agree?
Here, comments for discussion have been created, and not for the sole opinion of some kind of ushlepka.
I disagree, and let the people know that the tamron has standing models

And I also think that trehsotkovich - # there is a lot of obscene mat #, and who disagrees with this, please do not clog the thread with comments

Listen Couch Anonymous Daring troll-pee ... dabol. Do not hide. Hiding underpants and pimples like you. Give a link to your site, if you have one of course and if you are not a cowardly sofa pad. Rogues and cattle like you usually do not have a website, they call their page in contact by a website :) Or if you yourself have reviewed AT LEAST THAT, then give a link to your channel U-tube. In another case, I used many glasses, including Tamron, and I have a reason to say that Tamron is shit, and you ANONY are just p ... dabol without a name and a website. You are actually NOBODY at all, and your name is NO, so I will call you a nerd and a pid ... ace. Anonymous you can do a lot of pi ... do. But everyone will answer for his words in due time. ZOMG TEH DRAMA. But the ban is completely deserved :)

          • Yarkiya

The reward has found a hero!
            It was Tamron's revenge :))))

        • anonym

          Erase all the letters R.

        • Lynx

How much pain and drama from such a confident man.

        • Toad

Neighing))) ... But essentially Anonymous 1 and 2 are right. Tamron has different glasses. And it's silly to expect a good picture from a cheap superzoom. But here I, for example, have the last 90th makrik with a stub and it is difficult to predict the quality of its image. I think the latest 70-200 2,8 from Tamron is also quite decent glass, especially when compared to other third-party brands.

      • Lynx

By the way, what models are there in the tamron?
well, with the exception of 17-50 / 2,8, so to speak, a "consumable lens for non-top reporters"?

        • Arkady Shapoval

There are a lot of old manuals, 24-70 / 2.8 is new, their macrushniki are not bad, 70-300 are optically not bad, but you can find as many as you like.

          • Lynx

            90 mm .. ook.
70-300 except that considering at half the price than Nikon.

          • Anonymous 2

I join, the new 24-70 / 2.8 is cool. Very sharp when open, the bokeh is so-so - but with zooms it a priori cannot be good

          • Nikita

Hello, Arkady. Are there any plans to review Tamron 70-300mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD?

        • Alex

I join Arkady about 24-70 / 2,8 new, which is VC.
About 24-70 / 2,8 VC! - very worthy optics, which unexpectedly took the place of the staff instead of the planned 24-70 from Nikon.
Yes, yes, surpassed, unexpectedly and in all respects (
Itself did not expect sharpness, accuracy and quality.
I was guided by 2,8 as the most necessary for me, but there both 4 and 5,6 tear the “original” on the target in all respects (((
What is surprising, you can compare not only with the original, but also with fixes.
For example, the super-sharp Tokina 100 gives 2,8 barely noticeable halos of HA, and 24-70 at 70 / 2,8 costs indoors and generally without them.
In the open air at 2,8 there are easily removable XA at infinity (only), completely disappearing there already at f4.
In short, Tamron is now not the same as before.

    • Andrey Dolzhenko

Pick up 24-70 f / 2.8 or 70-200 f / 2.8 from Tamron and kill against the wall. These zooms are in no way inferior to Nikon originals at a price 1,5 times cheaper. :)

      • Alex

I think the same thing) supported in the comments above.
24-70 - outstanding glass from Tamron, with a very plastic picture - do whatever you want out of the rav)

  • Mahal Makhalych

And that's why such a “survey”?

    • The Hedgehog

At least to compare with analogues. Or are you only interested in nanocrystals?

  • Sanya

But will there be 450 EGF on DX cameras?

    • The Hedgehog

      Apparently, an eyelid ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Photographer

fixes, guys, you need to shoot! only fixes! and all these 18-200, 28-300 - to remove some kind of current incident. for internet 640x480.

    • Jackie

I would like to hear the comments of professional photographers about the possibility of filming, for example, a wedding, ONLY on a fix. Is it real?

      • Lynx

Really, only it will be ... ummm .. not quite a standard set.

      • anonym

I know a “professional” photographer who shoots a wedding with Nikon D800 + Nikon 24mm f2.8 + Nikon 50mm f1.8G + Nikon 85mm f1.8G. He has no more equipment. He wears two fixes in his pockets in sweatpants, and one on his carcass. And he juggles them all day. In principle, this is real, but dreary. Better to take 1 lens 24-70mm f2.8G Nikkor and rejoice. The money will come out the same.

        • Exhausted

I introduced this professional at a wedding in sweatpants with two lenses sticking out of the pockets among the elegant guests ...) I'm sorry for Tryokhsotkovich. As soon as he began to voice his rating of shitty lenses (all Soviet ones + Tamrons, all of them too), his bilious bubble.

          • Arkady Shapoval

Do you also want to get to know Ray better? We drove with Trekhsotkovich.

    • Jury

For Ineta, you can remove 1920x1080 with such a lens;)

    • Yarkiya

It’s a very controversial issue, I’ve shot it with fixes, and then I suddenly got tired of changing them. This of course does not mean that I refused fixes, but I bought a couple of zooms and rejoiced. :)

      • Exhausted

I agree. Especially if the zoom with a small magnification. Sigma 17-50 2.8 for example, everyone is good.

  • anonym

Anonyns probably fap on Tamrons, caress and lick them. That is why they so fiercely defend this brand from the attacks of Trehsotkovich. And in fact, just about the 70-200 2.8 Tamron that I had, I can say the following that the glass is normal, but its assembly is disgusting, on my specimen after 4 months bolts poured from the case (and in many reviews this occurs, in all the bolts on this model fall out). Bad sediment to this brand remained. I would never be personal because of some kind of glass. Keep it simple guys. And especially for Anonymous 1 and 2 - It is not Tamron who photographs, but the photographer.

    • Toad

Was it old or new (with a stub)? I'm just looking at something new. Reviews on the network are still very positive ...

      • anonym

        Old without a stub Tamron 70-200 2.8 I had

        • Novel

          I took a new 70-200 tamron for a test along with a similar canon 70-200 2,8is.
Given the one and a half time difference in price, tamron fully justifies the investment.
The stabilizer is slightly weaker, the corners are slightly soapier (by 2,8). Considering the price - the rules.

  • Jackie

IMHO the price for it is somehow too high for such glass. Is that because the lens is designed for full-frame cameras? It seems to me that a lens of this class would be more suitable just for cropped cameras as a standard superzoom for an unpretentious amateur photographer who has just switched from a “small” camera to a DSLR and does not intend to think about a park of lenses and, in general, about the possibility of changing them (he uses a hell of a zoom and happy). But putting it on full frame ...

    • anonym

      correctly noticed hellish zoom)

    • Denis

It’s full frame and is designed for the crop are 18-xxx

      • Jackie

I understood this, I mean, why is a lens of such quality and for such a price for a full frame?

I have a tampon 18-200 A14 and it seemed to me much sharper than a whale. Yesterday came sigma DC 18-125 I'll try it. I don't know which one is better. Sigma focuses faster. But both are equally dark and focusing in the room is a mockery. On the dismantling of tamrons and sigma (these are the ones) I will tell you that the lenses are assembled very efficiently and from metal. on the tamron, only 2 parts of the attachment to the body are plastic and the front part, everything else is metal (I wrote in the topic about tamron A14). Sigma is even cooler, it is almost all metal. There is one constructive flaw there, in my opinion made on purpose to kill them. However, there is also one such in tamron. But this is about my lenses. And about the above, I can say that it is most likely assembled in the same way. A very solid piece of iron, will last a long time, if you do not throw it away. The trunk starts to go out - you need to disassemble and lubricate. Begins to bite on def. focal - 100% or there is no lubrication, or the guides are spinning. Unfortunately, it was not possible to disassemble the ultrazoom that you so loved from the manufacturer and see how it was, but I think that it is much worse there, judging by the kit 18-55.

    • Eugene

He looked rabies, really weak and it is on d700

  • Yuriy75

Despite the storm of emotions, the pictures are good, but for such money it makes sense in another zoom 18-105 (18-135). Judging by the links with prices, it is not cheap, so 18-200 from Tamron is more preferable for a beginner to crop, and I'm afraid to advise for a full frame since I did not use it.

  • Leonid

    Hello everybody
I have a timer of 17 50 by 2,8 and I am pleased with it, it suits me perfectly. I treat him with care and for 2 years the bolts from him did not fall off. It looks like new.
It seems to me that Arkady is great, he shows all sides, both the pros and cons of the lens, and the forum is necessary for clarifications, comments, but not as an outpouring of emotions.

Good morning. I own Tamron 80-210 mm f3.8-4 Tele-Macro Adaptall-2 model 103A, as well as Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF), very good quality, both the pictures and the assembly. PS I took both lenses Arc-excellent review !!!

Cool, banned trehsotkovich faki sends out of nothingness.
Reminds of a second lieutenant from "White Sun of the Desert" with "grenades of the wrong system." (Their lenses are of the wrong system).

    Thanks Arkady.

Yes, I also recently bought a Tamron 70-300 with stabilizers. The stub itself is noisy, as Arkady describes, but it doesn't matter. We are not taking spy shots. So far, I can't say anything about the shortcomings. It seems to be a good build ... But in general, I also have Tamron for the first time in my life. Thanks for your review!

  • Alexey

Thanks for the review) it's nice to read you and study optics. Glad you are punishing boors here)

I took a bush under Pentax k-5. My truth is designed for a cropped matrix, unlike in the review.
Many wrote that it was not sharp, and this was really so, until it corrected the fine-tuning of autofocus to +2, after which it began to show pretty good results. In general, I am satisfied, given that I had a stock lens 18-55.
    The picture is quite saturated.
I heard that now Tamron is not being made in Japan, and therefore the quality is suffering.
Made in Japan is written in my ancient, maybe because of this it is not bad in sharpness.
I’m fotot for myself, so maybe I’m not chasing something supernatural, and I can’t save enough money for Pentax lenses.

Guys, can you please tell me if Tamron af28-300mm F / 3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD ASPH is suitable for the Mark III 5D? If not, what do you recommend !?

  • anonym

Thank you Alexander! I kept the Tamron 18/270 lens for myself, but it did not fit, I was very upset, because. I really liked this station wagon. The only drawback was that the "trunk" was not fixed. I had to sell. Now I was in search, but I sort of found it. Thank you Alexander!

  • Sergei

Gentlemen and amateur photographers, help me make the right choice. I climbed a bunch of reviews, but never found an answer for myself.
What to choose NIKON AF-S 18-200 mm VRII or TAMRON 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD?

The goal is a universal travel lens (they are both). For other purposes, there is a fix and a wide-angle, now the choice is just such a station wagon. The question of the price is not worth it, I choose it by the quality / usability ratio.

They write about the tamron that the picture quality suffers (especially sharpness), is noisy, it seems to focus a little slower. Although someone writes that Nicorr suffers the same sores.
What attracts in tamron - a larger zoom, less weight, more compact. But if the picture quality is much worse, then maybe these additional 70 mm? How do they work with videos?

In general, any thoughts and real experience of comparison are welcome. Thank you all in advance!

He asked a question in the topic about Nikons and Tamrons in the hope that someone who used one of them and could tell

        • Arkady Shapoval

I shot with these lenses. If the question of price is not worth it, then take your own 18-300.

          • Sergei

Well, native 18-300 already weighs 830 grams ... that is. this is already twice as heavy as Tamron. Still, for travel, it is important that the neck does not press too much)) That is why the choice fell on the two above-mentioned specimens, both in the region of 500 grams, Tamron is something about 450.

            • Arkady Shapoval

              Home Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f / 3.5-6.3G ED VR weighs only 550 grams :)

            • Sergei

You confuse two lenses with a similar name.

Lighter, but also darker lens (the one that Arkady advised)
              AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f / 3.5-6.3G ED VR

Heavier but lighter lens (the one you mention)
              AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR
              http://www.nikon.ru/ru_RU/product/nikkor-lenses/auto-focus-lenses/dx/zoom/af-s-dx-nikkor-18-300mm-f-3-5-5-6g-ed-vr

              • Sergei

I'm not the one Sergey who initially asked the question :)

              • Sergei

Yes, I have already seen the difference in the luminosity ... long and hard comparing the names))

I have not even considered this, now I am looking closely at him. I really love zooms on trips, and 300 is generally a fairy tale (after my whale 105).

              • Arkady Shapoval

Tamron 18-270 also aperture at the long end 6.3 :)

              • Sergey

You do not rush 300 mm. The picture at 200mm and 300mm is not very different. Also note that with aperture of 6,3 there is a risk of getting problems with autofocus. It seems to work reliably only on lenses no darker than 5.6.

              • Sergei

In daylight, 6.3 is not so small .. in extreme cases, you can also correct it. Well, no one is forcing to put forward on all 300, I am sure that on 200 will be all the same 5.6
Those. in all respects a more versatile device.

              • Sergei

As a result, I bought an 18-300 Nikon lens. While testing only a couple of days, there are no complaints, neither with focus nor sharpness.

Although you were right that the difference in magnification by 300 and 200 is practically absent. So it was quite possible to abandon the last 100 due to the best aperture. But the choice has been made, I hope that it is optimal for me.

By the way, I am very pleased with the D7200, after my old D90, the feeling is just great. :)

  • Lynx

Yes, you hesitated to spam in each branch.

  • anonym

I downloaded the archive, looked at the pictures even at aperture of 3.5-4.0, the sharpness is normal, I think this lens will not be much worse than a bunch of screwdrivers 28-80 and 70-300.

  • Garik

Hello Arkady! After reading the review about the lens Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 [IF] Macro A20 Aspherical LD XR DI VC I want to tell you that YOU are in many ways wrong, pointing out the multiple disadvantages…. I have had this lens since 2006 with a Canon EOS 5D camera and show excellent results ... How many pictures were taken at weddings and birthdays, other events and the results after viewing those present only at Hurray and Class ... During these years, no problems there were none at all - repairs, etc. and so on ... Jams when leaving (when zooming, the lens sometimes jams in the 70mm position, thirdly - when working with the lens, it feels like it is about to fall apart) as you write no and was not. About the sound of the stabilizer is complete nonsense ... Yes, people will read your review and will think for a long time who is RIGHT ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

Are you sure you have this particular model? I described everything in sufficient detail and justified.

  • Garik

I'm still in my mind ... Now I wanted to throw off the photo and does not miss the site ... only up to 1 mb ... Believe it ... or not ...
