Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX Review

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX Review

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX - high-aperture prime, produced since 2008 for different systems. This review presents a version for Nikon cameras. Among third-party manufacturers, so far only Sigma produces modern 50 mm fixtures. In addition to the Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX, there is still a no less sensational - Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM Art.

At first I was very skeptical about Sigma's fifty kopeck piece, but when I got my hands on it, its large front lens, with a 'professional' filter diameter of 77 mm, made me fall in love with it, and then our relationship was strengthened by a good picture. True, it's a pity that the good relationship lasted until the first focusing mistakes :(.

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

The lens is focused using the HSM motor (Hyper Sonic Motor, Nikon SWM analogue). Focusing is fast and quiet. Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX (version for Nikon cameras) fits all Nikon digital cutting cameras, even to those who don’t inboard motor focusing. The minimum focusing distance is 45 cm (normal MDF for 'fifty dollars'), and the maximum magnification ratio for macro photography is 1: 7.4.

On the case there is a window with a focus distance scale in meters and feet, as well as depth of field labels for F / 8 and F / 16. It’s a pity there is no hard stop for quick and accurate aiming at infinity. You can also find the AF-M focus mode switch

The focus ring is rubberized, rotates 90 degrees in the active position. Due to the fact that the lens is very chubby, such a small stroke of the focus ring is quite enough for comfortable work with manual focus. During auto focus, the ring remains stationary. In manual focus mode, when the ring reaches its extreme positions, it does not rest, but continues to rotate, slipping, like on many native Nikon lenses.

The lens does not have internal focusing, but is designed so that during focusing the front group of lenses moves inside the lens body, while the trunk of the lens does not lengthen. Such focusing will in no way interfere with the use of any special filters, for example, gradient or polarizing.

When using the lens on the camera Nikon D700 I encountered frequent misses in auto focus mode. If in good conditions for focusing the lens more or less coped with focusing, then as soon as it came to low-contrast scenes, side and backlight, automatic focusing became almost useless. And in general, I got a lot more blurry shots due to focus automation errors than with any another native fifty dollars from Nikon. Perhaps this is just such a feature of the instance from the review and it is when working on D700... Personally, I was very pleasantly surprised by the focusing speed with the Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX and greatly upset its accuracy. Also, there are rumors that during aperture there is a focus shift (aka 'focus shift'), but personally I did not notice such a disease behind the lens.

Wardrobe Case Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Wardrobe Case Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

The lens has the function of constantly accessing the focus ring, but the Sigma 50 / 1.4 does not have a full-fledged mode of constant manual focus control Nikon M / A... In autofocus mode 'AF', set with a switch on the lens, performing manual focus override rivals camera and lens automatics. We can say that the Sigma 50 / 1.4 only has a focus mode Nikon A / M.

For comparison - native Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4G immediately disables auto focus as soon as you touch the focus ring and it does not depend on the focus mode set in the camera. Mode Nikon M / A is sometimes a very nice 'little thing' that most third-party manufacturers never learn to copy. Of course, you shouldn't worry about this shortcoming, I think that none of the Sigma 50 / 1.4 users are particularly upset about the lack of a mode Nikon M / A. Moreover, if you use different buttons to activate focus and release the shutter (AF ON or AF-L / AE-L), then the lack of a lack of regime M / A completely disappears.

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Compared to a native similar lens - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4G, Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX focuses an order of magnitude faster (if you compare the focusing time from infinity to MDF and vice versa). Personally me in Nikon 50 / 1.4G the slow focusing was very annoying, and in general it is strange that the 'flagship' among the 'fifty kopecks' Nikon 50 / 1.4G focuses more slowly than the simpler model Nikon 50 / 1.8G. But dear Nikon 50 / 1.4G has a much higher 'tenacity' of focusing than the lens from the review.

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

The Japanese assembly of the lens is top notch, the lens itself is very pleasant to the touch, with a characteristic Sigma velvet coating (newer versions of the same lens have a body made of ordinary plastic without velvet). The lens weighs 570 grams and looks great on the camera due to its huge front lens. Before the Sigma 50 / 1.4, I had never seen a fifty dollar lens with such a large front lens, for example, my own Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4D uses tiny light filters with a diameter of 52 mm.

Housing parts Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Housing parts Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Included with the lens is a special small case (shown in the picture in this review) and a hood. The lens hood can be installed in the reverse position (transport mode), only when the hood is worn back and forth, access to the focus ring is completely lost. The hood is latched with special grooves.

Aperture blades Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

Aperture blades Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX

The optical design of the lens consists of 8 elements in 6 groups, with one of the elements being an aspherical lens. The uninitiated don't care about all these elements, groups, etc., but what's funny is that Sigma is 3 years ahead of Nikon in implementation. aspherical elements in 'fifty dollars'. So, until 2011, until it came out Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical, all Nikon XNUMXs were designed without the use of aspherics.

By the way, Canon since 1989 also launches its Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.0 L USM with two aspherical lenses :).

Enlightenment of the front lens

Enlightenment of the front lens

The lens uses a diaphragm with 9 blades that form an almost round hole, which very well affects the nature of the luminous discs in the blur zone. The aperture closes to F / 16, and the maximum aperture of F / 1.4 allows you to use the lens with slow shutter speeds in low light. It is a pity that Nikon and Sigma do not produce 50 / 1.2 class autofocus lenses (and I am already silent about 50 / 1.0).

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX and MS Helios-81H 2/50

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX and MS Helios-81H 2/50... The difference in aperture ratio is 1 stop, and the difference in size is colossal.

The 'EX' ('Excellent' - top quality lenses) prefix on the lens barrel is well deserved. Optically the lens turned out to be good. First of all, F / 1.4 aperture, especially in the center of the frame, is absolutely 'working'. With aperture, the edges of the frame also return to normal. Otherwise, the lens is good too. In particular, I want to undo his nice 'drawing'.

Here link to the archive with the originals - 762 MB, 67 photos in .NEF format (RAW) from cameras Nikon D700 (FX) and  Nikon D80 (DX). When shooting on Nikon D700 some photos were taken using Nikon flash SB-900, and when shooting on Nikon D80 a Citiwide CPL 77mm polarizing filter was used.

EGF Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX when used on Nikon DX cameras will be 75 mm, which is quite suitable for portrait shooting.

Results

Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM EX is a very good lens, there are certain drawbacks with focusing on some models and with some cameras, but in general, it can be a worthy replacement for the native 50 / 1.4 class lenses, and sometimes much better than the native XNUMX / XNUMX lenses '.

  • Dmitry K

Arkady, why do you think third-party lenses being of good quality still often miss the focus? It’s a shame to get a purebred and very beautiful, but lame horse for big money

    • Lynx

buy only native horses and not an attempt to repaint for them.

      • anonym

You are absolutely wrong. In the last couple of years, SIGMA wiped the nose of all the native horses, and so wiped it that their scent would not be restored for a long time. Apparently, you have never worked with SIGMA lenses. The truth and price they are now asking for is adequate.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I can't give any exact answer :) Apparently, third-party manufacturers do not make their Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax cameras, and therefore do not know the intricacies of creating a lens for working with them, although such thoughts are a pitchfork on the water. There is a conspiratorial theory that cameras recognize third-party lenses and specifically process focusing using a different algorithm, or perhaps third-party manufacturers simply do not know how to bring their products to mind.

      • Dmitry K

I, too, for conspiracy theory))) who wants to share the market? True, it’s possible to encrypt every new camera model with some kind of firmware, that third-party lenses will not stop focusing and working completely

        • Arkady Shapoval

Some third-party lenses do not work in Live View :)

          • anonym

This sigma works great in Live View.

      • Develer12

It’s just that lenses from third-party manufacturers need to be adjusted in advance (for example, you can align the sigma in an official Belarusian store with a guarantee for free).

        • Dmitry K

somehow it’s strange to align a completely new lens. And it’s not a matter of adjustment — some frames are obtained. It’s just that the focus has either fallen or not. If there was a strong back or front, everything would float

          • Sergei

I adjusted the new 70-200 to 35 μR, although it seemed that he was already sharp. it’s better to check the lens from the very beginning, and at the same time the device. Those who often change lenses have adjusted the optics more than once. It's a shame that screwdriver zooms do not align. But there are no problems with fixes.

    • Denis

The thing is that Nikon and Canon do not distribute the specifications of the communication protocol between the lens and the camera, and third-party manufacturers dock their optics by reverse engineering - in simple words, "eavesdropping" on signals from native optics and "forging" these signals with the lens. And not all of these methods can be correctly “picked out”, so we get glitches.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Although it would seem to disassemble the firmware, the job is not complicated.

        • Jury

          uncomplicated, but jurisdictional :)

          • THE

Many would have already sat ... BUT ... it was not there.

        • Gene jb

Unfortunately, everything is much more complicated. The chips in the lenses are either one-time programmable or with protection. Therefore, only the reverse engineering method on the output signals works here. But in my opinion sigma and tamron, after a failure with their old lenses, already have a specification of protocols and nikon and kenon. And in general, it is in vain that you run into these manufacturers - the lenses are made of very high quality, not like the originals, for example, kenon (Nikon did not understand). Mostly metal, not plastic. By the way, old sigma lenses are made of plastic almost entirely.

          • Denis

“Therefore, only the method of reverse engineering by output signals works here” - that's what I wanted to say.

          • Arkady Shapoval

If Lushnikov made his dandelion, then Tokins-Sigma-Tamrons and even more so with their brainy Japanese engineers could already do everything with a feng shui method by poke :) IMHO)

            • Jury

they did, most likely :) The question is not in the protocol that they copied a long time ago, but in the fact that the carcass understands the Sigma lens as a Sigma lens and may not work correctly (on purpose), even if the protocol is one in one Nikon. And as soon as the Sigma lens on the carcass is identified as Nikon, the trial will begin here :) Sigma needs its camera, then it will become clear why there are more focusing errors on their glasses. Thanks for the reviews, Arkady!

              • Gene jb

Sigma has cameras if you did not know, but only with its mount. The problem is in the mount and, accordingly, the protocol. I do not think that canon or nikon are such Westernists. Most likely, the focus program itself has been worked out worse.

            • Denis

Dandelion is much simpler than an autofocus lens. Tokins-Sigma-Tamrons are created and work, after all)) Another thing is that it is not always correct.

      • Hleb

I suspect that this is not about the under-construction. Observed an interesting picture - my AF-S 80-200 f2,8 on Nikon D1x focuses much faster and more accurately than on D800. On the D800, sometimes it just jerks the focus at a distance of about 2 meters, but you need infinity, but on the D1x D200 this was not. And so I thought that corrections for different types of lenses were probably introduced into the focusing firmware, in fact, a lot of it was written about this in passing, for example, when describing new versions of camera firmware. So, most likely, the old native lenses and, naturally, lenses from third-party manufacturers are simply not spelled out in the new carcasses. Apparently there are modes of operation for which specific amendments must be introduced and for native lenses they do this, but not for third-party ones. Taking this into account, one can even assume that technologically and structurally, many lenses of third-party manufacturers are more perfect than the original, as if they are cleaner designed and the microcode is better.

    • Vladimir

The answer is simple to the point of banality: native manufacturers, as best they can, are fighting third-party lenses in new camera firmware, and NEGATIVE ones are fighting cameras in the next lens firmware, and so on in a circle. I am not saying this unfounded. I work with SIGMA optics, and I got burned many times on the new camera firmware. As soon as you roll back the camera firmware, everything falls into place .... And what did you want, the fight for a vegetable called "KABUSTA"

  • 10111

And the blur is as dull as on Nikkor. His aspherics do not paint.

  • anonym

    Cool picture, live)

  • Juniper

    j-fx:
Zliva is similar to the ART series.
    Sigma ahead!

  • Juniper

    Nі, so I have mercy.

  • Shamil

I have experience with this, I think that the picture is more beautiful than the sigma one, especially if you shoot a video - there is no, at least from the price analogs.
    Incredibly cool colors.
Arkady, the autofocus is terrible, only in the new, art series apparently fixed it :)
    Thanks for the review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The price in the art version is also fixed. Although I had 35tk art, there are also questions with focus.

  • Slavik

    What highlighted the model, Arkady?

  • THE

How long have I been waiting for this type of review ... waited. Thanks, Ark. :)

  • Photographer

you have to act like Zeiss - a good optical design without autofocus ... only it's so hard to report ... about the price - I am silent ...

  • Photographer

... but in general Sigma could develop a full-frame DSLR ... their optics are already filled up ...

  • anonym

At the full frame, the sigma is clearly more interesting than 1,4zh, but on the crop, on the contrary, Nikor liked more. Thank you for the photos from these lenses on different matrices.

  • pilotkins

    Beautiful model :)
well, sigma ... well, it is also in africa sigma :)

    • Vladimir

Yeah, you can’t refuse the taste of Arkady. The model is so good that even Sigma does not spoil it.

  • Yurok

Thanks for the review, I’m just looking at such a lens. Arkady, please tell me, there were only misses with AF D700 and how the number of misses changed when changing the carcass to D80? Thanks in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There are a lot of misses on the D80 too, and this is not a back or front focus, but just mistakes.

  • Alexey B.

And how does this lens deal with HA at the open aperture, compared to 1,4 Nikkor?

  • Gene jb

Judging by dpreview canon 1.4 is worse than sigma.

  • Madness scif

I would like to see a comparative test nikkor 50 1.4g and sigma 50 1,4 Ex, clearly with photos

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don't write comparative tests, because for this it is necessary that the official representatives give their "tested" lenses, and not from the hands of the users. And for the first time you don't have enough synthetics?

      • Madness scif

that's exactly what synthetics, but if a photo with the same settings and plot, but different optics on the same cameras - this one is needed.

  • Vitalka

Arkady, please tell me a few words about the CITIWIDE CPL polarization, as I understand it, this is a cheap Chinese man. Is he completely lost to society or will he go out of hope ?? Thank you in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Quality corresponds to the price, but not so bad, you can shoot.

  • Igor

I don’t know how the lens is, but the girl is just beautiful. Very natural and photogenic.

    • THE

The model is not discussed, whatever it may be. Test only the lens and its capabilities.

      • Gene jb

Still beautiful. Yes, and sigma dyes it.

  • Victor

Arkady, here you are complaining that Nikon does not make fifty dollars with an aperture of 1,2 or 1,0. Did you know that this is the result of Nikon's marketing mistake? At one time, the company decided that they would not change the hole and bayonet in cameras when switching to digital. This will be appreciated by users with old optics sets. The result is that significantly fewer newly created lenses have been sold and physically cannot fit the autofocus lenses that you regret. But there were such lenses for a film camera. Now only on mirrorless cameras. Canon didn't make that mistake. They have a hole diameter of 10mm. more.

    • Dmitry K

what nonsense with aplomb. Nikon and now makes fifty dollars with a hole 1.2! manual. bayonet hole is not absolutely. Aperture ratio is the ratio of fr and the amount of light passing through the lens. That is why telephoto lenses are so large in diameter. Technically, it’s easier for Canon engineers due to the larger diameter of the rear lens, it’s easier to sharpen the lens. But Nikon was the first to make a megaproof back in 1962 (according to Ken) http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/f-095.htm

      • Victor

It's strange. It seems that he wrote in Russian: "physically they cannot shove lenses with autofocus." Defining word "autofocus". But you have the word "aplomb" in your dictionary - you are not hopeless.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don’t care what mistake the result is, they don’t do it, so it’s in transit.

  • Novel

I have been using the same lens for over a year.
    The picture is very pleasing.
Autofocus works as follows: if I’m taking a close-up portrait, it’s pointed very quickly and accurately, if the portrait is full-length, it normally focuses on the contrasting areas of the model, eyes, mouth, etc., and if the focus point falls on the cheek or forehead, then the focus begins to crawl back and forth.
    At dusk, accuracy also drops.
Over time, you get used to his work and misses become less and less.
In general, I am very pleased with the lens.

    • Ivan

Please tell me which camera do you use?

  • varezhkin

with such a large front lens IMHO this f1.0 should be! Nikon 1.4D generally has a little baby :)
It’s a pity that problems with AF on third-party lenses overlap the pros.

  • Hleb

great review! I can add on my own! I have this joy on the nikon d7000 and I'm glad! highly! there are many pluses! the bokeh is just super! sometimes it shoots so hard that they simply cannot get enough of their eyes, I can safely say that this is a creative lens and is suitable for many tasks! without fail and interesting! Arkady, I wanted to send this only my sigma, but was afraid in connection with the situation in the country, but I'm glad that they provided it to you!

  • Denis

Arkady, it’s not always possible to hear a good opinion from you about a third-party lens) By the way, you are a very talented photographer. And the video is still not enough) really liked it so we'll wait!

  • Igor, Saratov.

Good afternoon Arkady. If you are interested, I can provide for review RUBIN-1 2,8 / 37-80 (converted to 39 threads) and a number of other lenses of the Soviet era.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, very interesting.

  • Uladzimir

    1. The model is a beauty !!!
    2. Any high-aperture optics require a focusing sensor. I have such a fifty-kopeck piece on the Canon seven. Autofocus misses happen but very few. For example, I like the drawing, although everything is subjective here. Chromite on the open hole, but straightens out in Camera Raw to the glass profile. Thanks Arkady for the review. Modelke - hello :-)
