Review Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T *

There is nothing special to write about Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T * - a very good macro lens with excellent optical performance. Of course, if you look closely, you can find several shortcomings :)

For taking pictures from the review, I used a Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T * on Canon EOS cameras (Canon 5D & Canon 350D) through adapter C / Y-EOS.

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T *

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T *

Makro-Planar 100 / 2.8 T * - amazingly assembled, no backlash, all made of metal and glass. Even when the lens trunk is fully extended, the construction feels very solid and free from bumpiness. Makro-Planar 100 / 2.8 T * manufactured in Japan. The focusing and diaphragm rings are rubberized. Such a miracle weighs as much as 740 grams, which is seriously felt in the lens + camera bundle. This enormous weight is due in part to the large glass element located third from the front in the 7 elements in 7 groups optical design.

Focus ring rotates 720 degrees (two full turns). At the first turn, the focusing distance scale works, at the second turn, you can only find out the magnification ratio for macro photography. The MDF on the distance scale is 45 cm, I could not find the focusing distance at 1: 1 magnification, so I had to measure it myself, it is about 34 cm (from the subject to the focal plane), while only about 13 remains from the subject to the front lens cm.

When focusing, the trunk of the lens is noticeably lengthened, while the focusing ring is also displaced, which is not very convenient. During focusing, a floating element system is used, allowing you to take good pictures at any focusing distance.

The front lens does not rotate and uses filters with a diameter of 67 mm. The lens has a scale with a magnification ratio of 1:10 to 1: 1, as well as a depth of field scale for F / 8, F / 11, F / 16 and F / 22.

In the review, I visited a lens with a composite lens hood. The Contax 67/88 Ring Japan ring is screwed into the thread for the filter (or into the filter itself), and the Contax Metal Hood 4 Japan lens hood is screwed into it. As in the best houses of Paris and London, the lens hood has a rubberized ring for easy installation (this is the first time I see it).

I used safety filter B + W XS-PRO Digital Made in Germany (pretty good) both with the hood and in the backlight I got a bunch of bunnies along with a 'rainbow', as well as a strong veil. At first I thought that the reason for this was a poor-quality light filter, twisting it, I duplicated the same scene, and was upset to find that the backlight of the lens was not all right. However, it is worth noting that under normal shooting conditions (and even with strong side light) the lens creates images with excellent contrast, I am not talking about sharpness at all.

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T *

The lens uses an 8-blade aperture. At F / 4, the petals form a jagged hole, if you close the aperture more, the jagged edges disappear.

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T *

Bokeh Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T * on a slightly covered diaphragm. Circles on the face in the form of a circular saw.

At F / 22 (the minimum value for this lens), bokeh circles generally turn into some kind of amorphous baku.

Actually, I noticed that many Carl Zeiss manual lenses suffer from the 'circular saw' ailment.

When focusing towards MDF, the lens drops noticeably aperture, which is typical for such macro lenses, the angle of the field of view also changes (i.e. focus breathing)

This, by chance, is not the Planar that Dmitry Evtifeev had?

    • Dmitriy

I had a lot of them. This is one of them :) It is good that he fell into the good hands of Oleg and Arkady.

Well, they saw the one who is trying so hard for us! Very nice and competent young man.
Video is a great addition to a written review, but not a substitute for it. Thanks again for your hard work.

  • Denis

    very commendable well done !!)))

  • anonym

there is a stain in the photographs, is it dust on the sensor or in the lens?
Is there anything else with similar sharpness ??

  • Vladimir

Loved the photos and the review itself !!!

  • anonym

    Class keep it up!

  • anonym

I propose to shoot each review on a different lens!

    • Morgunov Vladimir

in fact, this is quite difficult to do, because I work for Nikon, which means that most of the mechanical optics are closed to me, because there will be no infinity. Yes, and I would like each review to have some kind of binder, at least in the nature of the picture, color, mood, etc.

  • varezhkin

Great review. The video premiere also pleased.

  • anonym

The video review is excellent, it would be nice if each article could be watched in addition to text

    • Morgunov Vladimir

in the future we will try to do so.

For some reason I remembered an old parable, like a man comes to a small town, and he needs to get a haircut. There are two hairdressers. One is clean and tidy, and the haircut is stylish. And the second neglected, requires repair, and moreover, the hairdresser is so-so. Where would you go? The man went to the bathroom, because there are two hairdressers, and the neat master did the untidy hairstyle, and vice versa. And now the question is - Arkady, who will you invite to film your own wedding? It is not worth mentioning names, just what technique will this master have? What do you want to capture such an important event in your life?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I can name the names, my wedding was shot by Mike Titarenko, a wonderful photographer, a true master of his craft and this is not an advertisement. Next time we wait and see.

      • anonym

        Respect to Michael!

      • Novel

"Next time we'll wait and see."
ha ha ha both wife and Mike are puzzled ...
a specific sense of humor however))

  • Oleg

Arkady, as for me, you are no longer interested in doing reviews. Or your head is occupied by another. Another review for show ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

As for me, people who are fed up with knowledge and old reviews no longer take new, high-quality reviews for granted. Another comment for a tick ..

    • anonym

Oleg, it’s not interesting don’t read or write

  • anonym

Yyyyyyyyyy, I think that there will be two different photographers N and K, and then after processing they will mix all the photos and erase the copy.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Video pleased. I thought that you will be older.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, everyone who provides me with a technique for review, when they meet, make round eyes and ask “Are you sure A.Sh.?”. I suspect that this is due to the fact that there are many reviews of manual optics, ancient as light, on Radozhiv, respectively, there is an opinion that these reviews are made by a person from the same era as the lens. Some particularly unbelievers to the goddess Haruhi I show my driver license.

    Good day !!!
A year ago, he acquired a Nikon D600 and a Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF lens.
Prior to that, I shot on a soap dish SONY DSH-2. I processed all the photos in the editor.
I really like the increased sharpness on the main subject. On Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF, I’m disastrously lacking it, I have to finalize it again in the editor.
Question: Will the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 600mm 50: 1G SWM Aspherical cope with this problem on the D1.8 (the price and description of the lens in your articles suit you). Since the camera is with a motor, it may not be overpaying and take the Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor. But the main thing is quality and sharpness !!!
I mainly shoot landscapes and portraits in nature. Zoom with your feet doesn’t bother. Maybe suggest something else?
    Thank you in advance !!!

    • anonym

Strange, you need over-sharpness, and use the zoom.

      • matwey

Sharpness is needed not excessive, but sufficient. Today I’ve been on a tripod with different settings, it’s still soapy, and the focus misses even with the central point of focus. I tried everything in the camera, nothing helps, I sin on the lens. Maybe of course I'm wrong.
I use the zoom of course. But it is limited by funds for the purchase of 10 thousand, I think that this is not enough to buy a zoom lens for landscapes and portraits. So I thought that fifty dollars would help me out.

        • Jury

What aperture are you photographing? Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical at 1.8 will give you both HA and soap if the landscape is done.

          • matwey

I’m taking several pictures: minimum, middle, maximum. Then I choose the best.
Maybe some other lens that will satisfy my requirements? Thanks in advance !!!

            • Jury

There is no limit to good, I can say that on the crop (D3200), the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G, with an aperture of 8, shows normal sharpness throughout the frame if you shoot a landscape, but there are certainly much better options that are much more expensive :)

  • Dmitriy

    Hello, Arkady.
The review turned out to be interesting, even the emotional coloring is felt, which only confirms that the lens is really good.
For me personally, for financial reasons, this lens is purely theoretically interesting, from a cognitive point of view.
But the most important thing in this review (for me personally) turned out to be the video.
I don’t remember exactly how and when I first came to your site, but it was 2-4 years ago.
I regularly read reviews, write something in the comments, but I saw you for the first time.
It's amazing how the idea of creating a video clip did not come up earlier. I am far from an elderly person, but, apparently, of “old upbringing”, it turns out to see the person's face, the interlocutor, is very important (even when communicating on the Internet).
Video (linked to your site) removes an invisible but opaque fence between you and your readers and / or interlocutors, this is a great idea.
And on this occasion I want to thank you and your comrade, Vladimir Morgunov.

  • Nikolai (sn797)

Wow! Video in the review from Radozhiva! I knew that this would be inevitable and honestly, I was waiting for this event with a great deal of skepticism.
And then it happened. And my skeptical expectations did not come true. The video perfectly complemented the review! At the same time - not long and not short! Bravo! The place was well chosen, the people looking for it harmoniously revived the picture. Static, even in a large and bright studio - there would be melancholy, but super! The operator is great! Arkady, as mentioned above, is simply handsome! Usually, the first pancake is lumpy, but not in this case. Slightly quieter background music is the only remark (I listen to headphones, maybe that's why)
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is actually not the first, the first is still mounted and will be called zero 00. Indeed, many thanks to Vladimir for shooting)

  • Oleg

With an initiative of you, Arkady. I really liked the video, it nicely complements the main (text) review. This is the first pancake that is not lumpy! The videographer is also handsome, his work very organically fit into the general atmosphere of Radozhiva. Waiting for new reviews, incl. and video reviews
