Review Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T *

There is nothing special to write about Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T * - a very good macro lens with excellent optical performance. Of course, if you look closely, you can find several shortcomings :)

For taking pictures from the review, I used a Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T * on Canon EOS cameras (Canon 5D & Canon 350D) through adapter C / Y-EOS.

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T *

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T *

Makro-Planar 100 / 2.8 T * - amazingly assembled, no backlash, all made of metal and glass. Even when the lens trunk is fully extended, the construction feels very solid and free from bumpiness. Makro-Planar 100 / 2.8 T * manufactured in Japan. The focusing and diaphragm rings are rubberized. Such a miracle weighs as much as 740 grams, which is seriously felt in the lens + camera bundle. This enormous weight is due in part to the large glass element located third from the front in the 7 elements in 7 groups optical design.

Focus ring rotates 720 degrees (two full turns). At the first turn, the focusing distance scale works, at the second turn, you can only find out the magnification ratio for macro photography. The MDF on the distance scale is 45 cm, I could not find the focusing distance at 1: 1 magnification, so I had to measure it myself, it is about 34 cm (from the subject to the focal plane), while only about 13 remains from the subject to the front lens cm.

When focusing, the trunk of the lens is noticeably lengthened, while the focusing ring is also displaced, which is not very convenient. During focusing, a floating element system is used, allowing you to take good pictures at any focusing distance.

The front lens does not rotate and uses filters with a diameter of 67 mm. The lens has a scale with a magnification ratio of 1:10 to 1: 1, as well as a depth of field scale for F / 8, F / 11, F / 16 and F / 22.

In the review, I visited a lens with a composite lens hood. The Contax 67/88 Ring Japan ring is screwed into the thread for the filter (or into the filter itself), and the Contax Metal Hood 4 Japan lens hood is screwed into it. As in the best houses of Paris and London, the lens hood has a rubberized ring for easy installation (this is the first time I see it).

I used safety filter B + W XS-PRO Digital Made in Germany (pretty good) both with the hood and in the backlight I got a bunch of bunnies along with a 'rainbow', as well as a strong veil. At first I thought that the reason for this was a poor-quality light filter, twisting it, I duplicated the same scene, and was upset to find that the backlight of the lens was not all right. However, it is worth noting that under normal shooting conditions (and even with strong side light) the lens creates images with excellent contrast, I am not talking about sharpness at all.

The lens uses an 8-blade aperture. At F / 4, the petals form a jagged hole, if you close the aperture more, the jagged edges disappear.

Bokeh Carl Zeiss Makro Planar F 2.8 100 mm T * on a slightly covered diaphragm. Circles on the face in the form of a circular saw.

At F / 22 (the minimum value for this lens), bokeh circles generally turn into some kind of amorphous baku.

Actually, I noticed that many Carl Zeiss manual lenses suffer from the 'circular saw' ailment.

When focusing towards MDF, the lens drops noticeably aperture, which is typical for such macro lenses, the angle of the field of view also changes (i.e. focus breathing)

    Arkady, hello!

Only Carl Zeiss lenses of the AE series suffer from “circular saws”. The Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 1: 2,8 f = 100mm T * was produced only in the AE version, and many others still had a newer MM version, where the aperture was different, polygonal. With the initiative you, with a video review! Nice to see you in motion! :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, for this I know that this planar is only in the AEJ version, but 100/2 in MMJ.

      • Dmitriy

It happens in the AEG version, i.e. made in Germany. There seems to be just a pretty polygonal diaphragm. But I won’t vouch, I didn’t fall into such a hand. 100/2 good, but not macro. By the way, the Zeiss indicates 0.41m as MDF at 1: 1. Although personal measurements are usually more accurate.

Privat Arkadiy. I promise you with a video debut). Good luck to you in full repair.

      Thank you)

Great review. Everything is clear and without water

  • Maksim

Video class! I’m hitting the ear of corn !!! I am imposing a resource to develop in the right way!

  • Eugene

The video review is very pleasant, interesting to watch. I will not even write about its frantic informativeness - it is, as always, at the level_and_ higher.
    Thank you.

  • Denis Khrustalev

Great review, great video to keep it up!

  • Ivan

Regarding the video review: Look more often at the camera, your eyes often run, and this is very noticeable

  • DimDimych

I was wondering what Arkady looks like)) With an initiative!

Advice) Arkady, take your time and relax. It seemed to me that you were very nervous during the shooting, in a hurry. Even the movements were kind of jerky, impetuous. The viewer feels like you are striving faster, faster to say everything and run away, so that everything finally ends)))) I understand that it’s unusual to be on the other side of the lens)))
Just relax)) I liked the video review!

    Arkady, thanks!

Thanks for the video review Arkady. It's time to switch to video reviews. Since people are actively degrading (including bombing photographers) and for them death is like reading something there. They’d better hang out for days on You Tube. Therefore, to this day, video is the best way to present information. Someone there writes to you that you’re nervous on the video or something else, so guys, try recording at least one video review yourself and see what happens with you. It just seems like an easy task. But in fact it is very difficult to follow the speech and gestures during the shooting, and still do not forget to say anything. So I tried to shoot a review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFXedzKsjwM and now I know how hard it is. And the review of Arcadia, especially the FIRST review, is simply gorgeous.

I really hope that you will go further in terms of video! I always loved your reviews, but in terms of video in general it’s a lot! I always loved the DIGETALREV TV channel, but there are very few translations of their videos, I think the Internet needs your videos !!!!

  • anonym

Video review is refreshing! Thanks and Like!

  • Andrei

Goodnight. Many thanks to Arkady! Keep it up, look forward to the new reviews!

  • Eugene

Awesome pictures !!!! Well, how can you shoot so cool ... :) Well, for the life of me, it doesn't work on my D5100 from 18-105 :(

  • Sergei

The review is excellent. The video review is also super.

  • Oleg

    Good review turned out.

  • Paul

Wow! now also on video :) I’ve been reading the site for a long time, a real charge of inspiration for photography. Continue in the same spirit.

  • Oleg

I also shoot with macroplanar 100 f2 - the best lens for me. And, by the way, aiming is not difficult for portrait photography. The only drawback is the high price with "fit" for Nikon; after all, the old ones, as far as I understand, do not fit along the working distance

  • Oleg

IMHO: I like it when, at the beginning of the article, the TTX is submitted separately, because it is so more visual than looking for in the text

  • Nikita

Slag, not a lens. for such grandmother sawmill in bokeh, horror

  • Artem

Arkady, please share your authoritative opinion.
Does it make sense to take the Carl Zeiss Macro-Planar 120/4 from the medium format and mount it on the Nikon d800? The Ali adapter is not expensive, and the lens from the SF itself is almost 2 times cheaper than the analogue for the FS (I am considering a used market). Consider for macro. Dimensions are not scary.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don’t see much point in this venture, but you can try.

      • Artem

so I also thought)))) thanks for the answer

  • Maksim

I’m selling just such a lens to whom you need to knock @maxkulik in contact or insta

  • Jury

Hello! A very interesting review, although I don’t understand why such utter grandmas are asking for - from 500 euros….
I was also interested in the moment with hosting for photos. Did you manage to grab a terabyte by email or pay for hosting? All the same, for each review, half a gigabyte for one review ... oh, how many!

    • Arkady Shapoval

It used to be mail.ru, then the Yandex drive became cheaper, but after access to a number of sites was banned in Ukraine, I moved to Google Drive with a terabyte subscription
