Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM Review

The Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is a good all-round fast zoom lens. I'm not a big fan of third-party lenses, however, Sigma has to be given credit lately as there are some great products among their products. Not so long ago, I was reviewed by optically very high quality Sigma 50-150mm 1: 2.8 APO DC HSM EX Optical Stabilizer и Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM, which can only be found fault with trifles, mainly related to the specifics of working with the Nikon system.

This review presents the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM option for Nikon cameras. Lens suitable for cropped cameras Nikon DX and for full-frame cameras Nikon fx, has a built-in ultrasonic focusing motor 'HSM' (Hyper Sonic Motor), and therefore will work on any Nikon digital SLR camerareleased since 1999.

History

Sigma has the largest family tree of universal high-aperture zoom lenses. It is sometimes very difficult to distinguish one model from another, as well as find information on a particular modification.

Below are listed all such lenses in chronological order of their publication, the names are indicated according to the spelling on the lens housing or near the front lens, and the optical design and the number of special elements are indicated:

  1. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom, 13/10 [0], since May 1992, aka Vivitar Series 1 28-70/2.8 VMC
  2. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX Ashperical [+ -D], 15/12 [2 ASP], from the end 1998
  3. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX aspherical DF [+ -D], 15/12 [2 ASP], since February 2001
  4. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG aspherical [+ -D], [DF] 14/13 [3 ASP, 2 SLD], since February 2001
  5. Sigma 24-60mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG [+ -D], 16/15 [4 ASP, 2 SLD], several subversions, since May 2004
  6. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG Macro [+ -D], 14/13, [3 ASP, 2 SLD], since September 2004
  7. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG [+ -D], 14/12 [4 ASP, 2 SLD] since September 2004
  8. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM, 14/12 [3 ASP, 1 ELD, 2 SLD], since September 2008
  9. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG OS A, 19/14 [4 ASP, 3 SLD], since February 2017
  10. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG DN A, 19/15 [3 ASP, 2 SLD, 6 FLD], since November 2019
  11. Sigma 28-70 mm 1:2.8 DG DN C, 16/12 [3 ASP, 2 SLD, 2 FLD], from February 2021

Separately, you can still identify almost universal:

  1. Sigma 20-40mm Zoom 1: 2.8 EX DG aspherical IF [+-D], 17/13 [2 ASP], since August 2001
  2. Sigma 24-35mm 1:2 DG A, 18/13 [1 ASP, 7 SLD, 1 FLD, 1 ASP SLD], since June 2015

Designations in the names of the lenses:

  • EX (EXcellent) - the highest quality professional lens
  • DG - the lens is designed for full-frame SLR digital cameras
  • DN - lens designed for mirrorless digital cameras
  • Df (Dual Focus) - a focusing system for convenient work with the focusing ring (DF is written near the front lens, or on the box / instruction)
  • IF (Iinternal Focusing) - internal focus
  • aspherical (ASP) - the presence of aspherical elements in the optical scheme
  • SLD (Special Low Dispersion) - special low dispersion elements in the optical scheme
  • FLD - (Fluorite-like Low Dispersion) - special low-disperse elements in the optical scheme with characteristics close to fluorite
  • ASP SLD (ASPherical Special Low Dispersion) - special elements that are simultaneously aspherical and low dispersion
  • ZOOM - zoom lens, the presence of zoom
  • HSM (Hyper Sabout nothing Motor) - ultrasonic focusing motor
  • OS (Optical Stabilizer) - built-in optical image stabilizer
  • A (Art) - Sigma Art Premium Lens Range
  • С (Ccontemporary) - a line of modern lenses with a good price / quality ratio
  • D - a letter in the name of the lens, which was placed only on some lenses for Nikon F cameras (analogue 'Nikon D') and Sony / Minolta (because the name of the lenses from the list is [plus or minus D]). Typically, the letter 'D' is located near the focal length indicated on the case, such as 20-40mmD, 24-60mmD, 24-70mmD, 28-70mmD)
Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

The lens from head to toe is crammed with special optical elements. In its optical scheme, consisting of 14 elements in 12 groups, there are already three ELD elements (Extraordinary Low Dispersion), two SLD elements (Special Low Dispersion) and three aspherical elements.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

The Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is 'plump' and heavy, weighs almost 800 grams, and uses a massive 82mm filter. It's a shame, but apparently Sigma and Tamron have decided not to switch to the 'kosher' 77mm used on most modern professional lenses. The lens itself is positioned as professional, as indicated by the letters 'EX' ('Excellent' - lenses of the highest quality). It is also a pity that the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM has no moisture and weather protection. When working with the lens, a slight backlash of the lens trunk can be felt and heard.

Included with the lens is a nice little case with a lock and a plastic tulip-shaped lens hood. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation, while completely losing access to the focus ring. The lens hood is installed in special grooves near the front lens.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM has an internal focusing type. When the focal length is changed, the lens trunk is noticeably lengthened, but, at the same time, it does not rotate. The rear lens moves when zooming. The lens has only one switch - focus mode 'AF / M'.

Focusing speed is very pleased. Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM focuses quickly. The lens that I visited in review sometimes emitted a thin squeak when focusing, which annoyed me very much. True, despite the fast focus, the number of misses was more than expected. When used on cameras Nikon D700 и Nikon D80 the lens often jerked the focus perceptibly (focus micro-shifts, easy to see in JVI and hear the quiet clicks of the motor when changing the direction of focus) when focusing on stationary objects.

Focusing works correctly in Live View (tested on Nikon D700).

Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM can focus from 38 cm and give a maximum magnification of 1: 5.3. The lens has a focus distance scale in meters and feet, as well as a depth of field scale for F / 4, 11, 22 (only for 24 mm).

The focus ring is rubberized, has a 90 degree smooth stroke. During auto focus, the ring remains stationary. It is stated that the lens supports constant manual focus control. Indeed, such control is present, but it is by no means a semblance of a regime Nikon M / A, and, in fact, performing manual focus correction with the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM in AF-C You begin to compete with the automation of the camera and lens. Personally, this annoys me a lot.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

The benefits of a fast aperture zoom lens are hard to overestimate. Personally, I came to the conclusion that whatever you say, a class 24 (28) -70 (75) /2.8 lens is extremely useful in a huge number of photo tasks and this range of focal lengths is constantly used.

When using relatively heavy zoom lenses, they often have to be supported with the left hand to maintain weight balance. It is extremely convenient for the zoom ring to be located 'in front' of the lens, or at least in the middle. Unfortunately, the zoom ring of the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is rubberized, but it is too close to the camera mount.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

My experience with the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM has not been the best. Unfortunately, I decided to take him to shoot one of the weddings, because now there is a sorely lack of time for 'separate photography for reviews'. Taking the lens out of the case to test it on 'people', I discovered that the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM doesn't want to be friends with my Nikons at all SB-900 и D700 in TTL modes. Paired with this lens, the flash constantly gave the most severe overexposure, both when shooting indoors, at shutter speeds not exceeding the FP threshold, and outdoors, in FP mode. In the room, we had to set the power correction 'mins 1.3-1.7'. I did not manage to figure out the reasons for such outlandish behavior. If you perform the correct power compensation, or shoot in non-TTL modes, then the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM is just right for wedding photography, especially if you don't experiment with F / 2.8 :).

I believe that instead of the new Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM it is better to find used option Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (the difference in price is not so great). I also think that the native Nikon 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor much better than Sigma. Usually such a lens is taken for 'serious' shooting and in such cases it is not worth saving. And I advise the owners of cropped cameras to take a closer look at Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

In Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM I liked the diaphragm with 9 rounded petals, giving smooth circles in the blur zone and well-adjusted chromatic aberration... The main question that worries many is whether the working aperture is F / 2.8. The answer is simple - it is suitable for many tasks, especially if you do not use the extreme zoom positions. At F / 4, everything becomes much more fun and you can shoot without fear of sharpness.

The Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is generally a good lens and can serve as an alternative to the native flagships of the 24-70 / 2.8 class.

It turns out that even despite the huge number of aspherical and special. lenses and letters "EX" do the lens lose to "native"?

    • Oleg

Well, so, relatives are also of a professional level, why are you surprised?

    • Alex

Before writing about any third-party lens, you need to work with it yourself! And not to listen to God knows who. Sigma has one problem, you need to choose the “that” lens with which you will be friends for a long time. And on Nikon D700 the lens works like a native one. I have been taking off with lenses of the ex line for several years already. trunks. sigma optics decent and affordable in comparison with native optics

      .

  • serge

thanks for the review. the second cat is super)

  • Dmitry K

Are there third-party lenses in nature with better quality than native lenses? Only not Carl Zeiss with his manual focus, but with autofocus? well, or at least the same in quality, but cheaper? otherwise you don’t look in any review-they’re not everywhere. The only thing that comes to mind is a token with its 11-16 and 12-28. Is there anything else?

    • Pastor

Well, besides Tokina 116, sigma 18-35 1.8 comes to mind. No other zoom has such aperture. Sigma also has fixes like 35 1.4, according to many owners, better than their native Canon or Nikon ones. And tamron has 16-300 - the world has never seen such a range of focal points :) But yes, in most cases, native glasses are better than third-party ones.

      • Sergei

There was sigma 18-35 1.8 ... bought into aperture. But a month later I sold this glass through a flea market. After a couple of months, the buyer also put it up for sale…. in short shitty glass. Although someone may do well….

        • Carl

Sigma 18-35 / 1,8 art shitty glass? You are joking? So far, there is no better zoom for crop!

    • Pastor

And I also forgot about sigma 8-16, which gives the widest angle of all non-fish on the crop. Neither Nikon nor Canon have yet been able to release such a crop.

    • Alexey

For the quality of what? Manufacturing? Or by permission? Or by the level of distortion? It does not happen that for 200 bucks and 28-70 / 2.8 and sharp inside and out. Most of the new sigmas are good and cheaper than the "original". 35 / 1.4, 50 / 1.7, 70 / .28, 105 / 2.8, 150 / 2.8, 18-35 / 1.8, 50-150 / 2.8, 70-200 / 2.8ОС, 17-70 "С", etc. etc. etc. They are all very good. The new Tamron 24-70 / 2.8 is also one of the best in terms of resolution.

  • Uladzimir

I use this lens with a canon eos 7D camera (it is clear that the lens is modified specifically for the canon EF platform). I never found the shortcomings indicated by the author, apparently the electronics did not make friends (I mean overexposure), I also did not find extraneous noise during autofocusing. The difference between this lens and a similar Canon lens is that sharpness at the edge of the frame with an open aperture, lack of moisture protection and slightly “curled” bokeh can be slightly worse. But with this lens, you may not know what chromatic aberration is. Sigma is also often criticized for back, front focus, but I have three sigma lenses and I did not notice this defect on any of them. With regard to high-aperture glasses, it is necessary to take into account what other focus sensors work when shooting. Thanks for the review, as always, it was interesting to know about the behavior of this lens on another platform. I would like you to make an overview on the sigma 50 / 1.4 ex lens if possible

  • anonym

For crop there is a tamron 17-55 2,8 optically like nikor and also with a stub !!! but it seems like you need to carefully choose.

    • Dmitry K

e-her .. a plastic tamron at all and the whole creaks and hangs out somehow strange. until the original 17-55 Nikon and Canon stick can not be thrown. One joy - 3 times cheaper

    • Eugene o

As the owner of Tamron (without a stub), I will say right away - it would be better if I paid three times more. Stab, by the way, on such a hole - it is generally not clear why.

Tamron lathers at the hole 2.8 terribly, I have especially in the left corners. Before buying, I read a hundred times the review (http://www.onfoto.ru/review/Nikon-Tokina-Tamron/148.html) It’s good that I don’t make money from it yet, otherwise people would be ashamed to look into the eyes.

    • anonym

Let me note that this thread is about a lens with other focal! Let the people not get confused. specify. Tamron 17-50 / 2,8 WITH STAB is much worse than sigma 17-50 / 2,8 OS (for crop), this is not even a matter of dispute. Maybe you were talking about nikkor 17-55 / 2,8? Or then a tamron without a stub.
Ps by the way, below Eugene O. writes about the same.

  • Jury

I use two Sigma AF 17-70mm F2.8-4.0 DC MACRO OS HSM and Sigma AF 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 DG OS HSM lenses, both squeak when focusing, and each squeak in its own way :) Squeak is unpleasant

    • Roderick

In general, are there Sigma lenses with a nice peep? Does anyone know?

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, and in comparison with the tamron 28-75 f 2,8, will this lens differ for the better, if you do not take into account a wider angle?

  • Alexander

I have such a lens in conjunction with the D600, it focuses quickly, there are practically no misses. There were misses on the D3100. The lens was purchased in January 2013. Problems with the SB700 flash exposure in TLL mode is correct. I tried with Chinese flashes, too, correctly. If you're interested, I can test it.

    • Alexander

I forgot to add, the lens “does not beep”. Mistakes are possible only in low light, but here is no longer the fault of the lens, but f / 2.8

PS For those who shout that shovel lenses have risen in price due to reviews - do not pay attention.
By the way, I’ve got Google Now that I’m reading this site and now it immediately notifies me when a new article is released, conveniently.

      • Dmitriy

I bought this lens for my D7000. Prior to that, only owned stock 18-105 and 50mm 1.8D. What can I say - the quality of the drawn picture is much higher, on the same carcass there is a picture with more natural colors. There is no annoying noise during AF, misses only when there is a lack of lighting. And what is also important - when switching to crop, I ALREADY will have an excellent high-quality lens that reveals the full potential of the camera :)

        • Dmitriy

Mistake: of course, when switching to fullframe

          • Alexander

            Congratulations on a great purchase!

        • Dmitriy

A small addition to the above. On the run of about 10 thousand photos taken (not professional, never) at a children's party, the lens refused to focus in automatic mode (the lens was constantly moving back and forth with a rather loud crunch. The wife was shooting, did not guess and did not know how to shoot in manual mode - most of the photos did not work out (with inoperative autofocus) ... Here is such a professional quality ... I found on the Internet that this sigma often frayed its focusing loop, and that I was not the only one ... Trust in the brand was undermined

      • Andrei

Tell me, how is he friends with autofocus in live view?

  • Basil

Thanks for your review. Because of your reviews, it is impossible to buy Soviet and foreign lenses at a flea market at a normal price, everyone reads, prices have inflated. So that you fail. And “fit” is written without a soft sign.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

    • anonym

Very funny and ridiculous: so "thank you" or "would you fail" ???? You will decide, otherwise your brain may boil ...

      • Dmitriy

The person wrote “So that” and not “sho”. And in some ways he is right. For some reason, they began to sell all junk at a very high price.

        • Nicholas

This is due to the fact that entry-level DSLRs began to be bought by everyone who needs and does not need, and of course, they don’t really take photos, but they want to buy lenses like in magazines ..

let, as a dropout philologist, correct the smallest detail about “fit”: what (s) does - it’s okay to write, what (c) to do - we’ll write it’s okay (sorry for getting in, fix this, dear)

  • Andrei

I have this lens, bought abroad, in Japan, there are no mistakes, the picture is not bad, but “dirty”. maybe I'm just finding fault of course.

    • Alexander

A “dirty picture” is very easy to correct in lightroom, set the “Camera Standard” profile in the “Camera Calibration” tab, turn on the correction of distortions / embedding in “Lens Correction”, and then Vibrance / Saturation to taste.

  • Andrey Dolzhenko

As the owner of the Sigma 24-70 f / 2.8 and the similar Tamron 24-70 f / 2.8, I can say that the Sigma was not even close to Tamron. In my opinion this Sigma is one of the most unsuccessful lenses from this manufacturer. Oblique and slow autofocus, soapy picture cancels out all its hypothetical advantages. Strongly do not recommend Sigma !!! Save up some money and take Tamron, which really competes with Nikon's original.

    • Sergey Zaporozhchenko

You do not confuse this with the version of Sigma Zoom 24-70mm 1: 2.8 AF EX DG MACRO?
The previous one really matches your comments.

      • Andrey Dolzhenko

No, it's about the glass from the review.

      • Gordey

Oh yeah. alas, I became the owner of this fierce shit, I swear, I spit and try to sell it ... it's some kind of tin

        • anonym

And what version of this glass do you have?
The last one is EX DG HSM, the penultimate EX DG Macro, the penultimate _ EX DG or EX DG D. it is also DG D. Which one will you have?
I ask because I want to take myself.

  • 100kul

I would also like a review of SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM new, I look closely at it.

  • Sergey Zaporozhchenko

    Thank you Arkady!
It was interesting to read your opinion about this lens.
I want to say that in the combination of D300 and SB-700 (and without) there are no problems with exposure.
On focus speed I agree - fast. Mistakes happen, but through trial and error I have achieved their minimum number. At F2,8 - at distances close to min., Misses are not uncommon. But covering up to F3.2 dramatically changes the situation.
In addition, the lens focuses better (more precisely) in AF-S mode.
I want to add a comment about its sharpness. There is sharpness on F 2.8 (he is very picky about this himself!), But if the focus got right! What are the problems sometimes.
I agree with the opinion on the location of the zoom ring, and the direction of his work is also unusual (differs from Nikon).
When buying, I was guided by the planned transition to FX, i.e. native 28-70 for crop would not be so wide and the price for it is from 10k UAH. Although they praise him on the net! Nikkor did not use 24-70, I hope that it is better, but the price for it is NOT happy at all!

    • Sergey Zaporozhchenko

Arkady, I forgot to clarify. And on your D80, did this Sigma expose normally?

      • Alexander

If this is still relevant to you, I have the opportunity to take the D80 I can check with the SB700 flash and this lens.

        • Sergey Zaporozhchenko

SW Alexander, you did not have the opportunity to use this Sigma on the D700.
I'm interested in what would be better in terms of focusing Sigma 24-70 HSM + D700 or Sigma 24-70 HSM + D600?
As I understand it, at 600 you have no complaints about the lens?

          • Sergey Zaporozhchenko

            Wrong:
SW Alexander, you did not have the opportunity to use this Sigma on the D700 ???

            • Alexander

Yes, I like the picture on the D600, in general, on the younger models where I put this lens, the result is also decent. I have not tried it on the D700, I do not think that the picture will differ much.

      • Arkady Shapoval

D80 with flash did not use.

  • anonym

Does anyone have experience with this glass on 5d mark 2? very interesting!

  • Maksim

I’m in conjunction with the d300, everything is fine, there are no focusing scripts, there is no rustling of the cable, well, maybe it doesn’t satisfy 2,8 at the extreme, and it's a gorgeous lens.

  • Alexander Malyaev

And who knows, Sigma EX 28-70mm 1: 2.8D what kind of beast is this? Maybe someone used?

  • Vladimir

Arkady, hello. Please tell me if you have a test of this lens with Nikon D800 with photos. Thanks in advance.

  • Anton

I have this lens in stock, now as a regular one. I have experience using the Nikon D40 (yes yes, a lot on the D40), the D5000 and now on the D750.
Frankly, the D750 is just a song. It reveals itself only at full frame, the picture is generally different. Focuses on the D750 in any completely wild environment, with a razor in all angles.
I really have a jamb - it does not focus in Live View, does not even try, while I still have a couple of months of warranty I want to contact the service.
PS author - not ashamed to upload such photos and even call the article a REVIEW? at least B / W corrected :-).

    • Olga

Please tell me, how is this lens working with the d40?

      • Sergey Zaporozhchenko

        SW Olga
It will work on your camera. V.t. including autofocus.
But does it make sense for you to pay almost 20k UAH? At the same time losing a wide angle!
More preferred is Sigma 17-50, which is with a stub.

    • Valera

For this they are in the original and laid out to show what happens …….

    • Andrei

Tell me, did you manage to fix the sigma joint in live view? I have one, there are no problems with the d7000, but I’m just planning on the d750, it’s interesting whether the problem is solved or not

  • Ivan

The opinion is very interesting if the choice is between this lens and the Nikon AF-S DX VR Nikkor 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6. It is clear that Nikonovsky is not so fast and all that - but how much will the photos taken with these lenses differ? I have a Nikon D7100 and I choose the only lens for it.

    • Maksim

Nikkor 16-85mm is a very good lens. And it's not always worth chasing aperture ...

  • Alexander

weak spot, very weak in this sigma, the ring between the lens mount and the lens body itself, it is made of cheap plastic, it’s not possible to find a replacement, I’ve been walking like this for a year and a half

  • Radda

Hello, but they gave me a SIGMA 24-60mm EX DG lens for testing / I didn’t find it in your review, tell me, is this just the difference in focal length or a completely different lens?

  • Alexander

Firstly, I want to thank Arkady for the excellent reviews! Very informative, especially for beginners ;-)
Well, actually, the question ... I took care of purchasing a staff on D7000. Kitovy 18-105 does not satisfy either aperture ratio or sharpness. Need a sharp, fast zoom for travel. Relatives 17-55 or 24-70 do not pull financially. I settled on 3 options: Sigma from the review above, Sigma 17-50 and Tamron 24-70. I shoveled a lot of reviews and finally got confused :-( Common and, unfortunately, frequent problems of both manufacturers - conditionally working F2.8, breakdowns after a year (sometimes even earlier) of operation, the need for adjustment. I tend more to Tamron 24-70, especially after comparison http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=786&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=805&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0
I'd like to hear the arguments of users of Sigma and Tamron ;-)

    • Maksim

I have the same D7000 + 18-105 and, accordingly, the same problems)) I want to say that solely from reviews, reviews and comments on the network I came to the conclusion that after all Tamron 24-70 ...

  • Yura

Good day! We bought this lens in the hope that it will replace the whale nikkor 18-105 / 3.5-5.6.
He has already ruined three weddings for us. The picture is soapy, scattered on any diaphragm. Autofocus always catches, but the picture is terrible, unless, if you take pictures from a very close distance, then a less acceptable result. We have a nikon d7000. Maybe our camera does not fit, but in other forums they also complained about such lens symptoms

    • Yura

It was not possible to fix this lens for repair, they said to sell. We tried it on the nikon D600 the same thing. Do not offer this lens to anyone. We are so upset and we will not take sigma lenses anymore. He's worse than my kit 18-105

      • Igor_K

The picture is quite natural for Sigma - backlighting is not acceptable for her at all! In the nominations "catching hares" and "loss of contrast", Sigma 24-70 \ 2,8 is the absolute champion! The petal hood included in the kit is just a beautiful cosmetic accessory, a cheap Chinese rubber “plunger” is much more effective, but it does not completely save you. But with the "passing" light, not everything is so sad. This Sigma has another, even more dangerous "disease" - a very frequent "factory" back / front focus, you need to very carefully select. Regarding the “non-working” 2,8 is an “overkill”, Tokin and Tamron are no better. If you have already become the “happy owner” of Sigma, just study its weaknesses, and in conditions unacceptable for it, use the “whale”, although a sprinkled 18-105 is still happiness, especially at the ends of the FR range! It's just, "For the price of a Volkswagen, you can't buy a Mercedes" (German proverb), but a Volkswagen can drive too! Before selling Smgma, try to shoot not "against the light", close the aperture, adjust the camera modes, add sharpness, contrast, in the end, at least use a camera flash to illuminate the face - Arkady is well described. As an example, I will add a shot at “2,8” aperture of the “past” version of this lens, which in most reviews was completely “trampled into the ground” by all respondents.

        • Igor_K

Another example of a picture of the same Sigma, backlight on-camera flash, open aperture, bright side light.

      • Gordey

Hello! Do you have exactly this model?

        • Igor_K

I have a “Sigma Zoom 24-70mm 1: 2.8 AF EX DG Macro” - one of the most famous predecessors of the lens in this review. The main difference from the subsequent version is the lack of a built-in focusing motor and a different optical design

  • Ingvard

Yes, Arkady, it looks like your experience with this Sigma cannot be called successful. Although the network has many flattering reviews about this glass, especially from the canonists. There are even those who say they put a similar L-ku on the shelf, because Sigma's color rendering is much better.
But here I have a question for you and for everyone who has experience working with this lens on dense matrices (for example, on the Nikon D800). There is this lens with a defective autofocus (it was not understood, it was not repaired yet, the exterior and condition of the glasses are excellent). Should I buy it for my Sony A7R? (Nikon glasses on Sonya will be without autofocus in any way). Use is supposed to be amateur. How does this glass allow 36 megapixels? Can anyone share the RAVs? They ask for about 9000r for this lens.
    Thank you!

    • Ingvard

Apparently this is not the most popular lens, since no one wants to answer my question)

      • Igor_K

If you deliberately refuse autofocus, then in my opinion, for such a sum you can find a lot of interesting things from old manual optics, for example, the same “Vivitar Series One 28-105 \ 2,8-3,8” from, or “Vivitar Series One 28- 90 \ 2,8-3,5 ". As for me, they will definitely be more interesting than Sigma, but with your "shank" - they cost a penny, in addition, they are lighter, structurally more reliable, the filter diameter is 67mm (the price is very different from 82mm!), The backlight is "kept" much better, the picture is very decent (IMHO). As the owner of both "glasses", I can say with confidence - "Sigma" should be bought only after thorough testing, guided exclusively by personal subjective impressions.

        • anonym

Thanks Igor! I also looked at Vivitar, just Sigma turned up and a dilemma arose. Now, I think, I will definitely try vivitar according to your advice, plus an autofocus adapter for canon is on the way. And canon-glasses from comrades in bulk - I will take and test)))
So far (just don't laugh) I have the most organically fitted glass on my 7R - it's a banal Jupiter-8)).

          • Igor_K

Personally, I have the warmest memories of Jupiter 8, together with Kiev 4. Before this "rangefinder" came into my hands, I had enough filmed Zenith TTL with Helios 44. So after developing and printing the first film from "Kiev", I immediately took "Zenith" to the consignment shop - there is a very big difference was sharp and easy to focus, and the beauty of Helikovsky twisted bokeh, I did not bother at all in my youth, and not only me. I still have the rangefinder rarities “U-9” and “U-12”, it’s a pity to put them on Nikon, dear fragments of the “Feast Epoch” ... Happy New Year and Merry Christmas to all colleagues!
The postcard was shot by "Sigma", sharpness is where it is necessary, everything is fair - in the subject of the review!

            • Vladimir Babich.

Regarding the Yu-9 on Nikon - this is just the least problem with this - it is put through the cheapest metal lensless adapter, and to set autofocus to infinity, just take the lens by the ends and twist it in two halves, take it out completely (you may have to pick it up there ring made of copper wire) adjusting rings.

On the D-600 fullframe, this Yu-9 draws very well for me - after all, some kindred roots from the Zeiss are preserved in it - but on the HEX-5 and D90 I somehow do not quite have enough lens resolution, although sometimes too I dabble in it and on the crop ...

              • Igor_K

Thanks for the answer. All the hands will never get to the point of alteration, just in the rangefinder version “Yu9” a little more turning work needs to be done to install the KP-A \ N. But I just do not have enough "fix" with such FR, and the money for "Nikkor" is a pity, so I have to overpower too laziness. Question to you, as the owner - the gap formed as a result of the alteration, what was covered? If so, please share your experience, I think that many will be interested.

            • Vladimir

Here is a link on how to convert the M-42 mount to Nikon with infinity: http://dphotoworld.net/publ/ehto_interesno/bitva_za_beskonechnost_ili_stavim_gelios_44m_7_na_nikon/5-1-0-227 In this way, I have remade 2 lenses. As for the gap, I turned the rings to the size of the gap, and drove it already with a file. This is how lenses with mounted rings look.
