Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM Review

The Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is a good all-round fast zoom lens. I'm not a big fan of third-party lenses, however, Sigma has to be given credit lately as there are some great products among their products. Not so long ago, I was reviewed by optically very high quality Sigma 50-150mm 1: 2.8 APO DC HSM EX Optical Stabilizer и Sigma 35mm 1: 1.4 DG A HSM, which can only be found fault with trifles, mainly related to the specifics of working with the Nikon system.

This review presents the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM option for Nikon cameras. Lens suitable for cropped cameras Nikon DX and for full-frame cameras Nikon fx, has a built-in ultrasonic focusing motor 'HSM' (Hyper Sonic Motor), and therefore will work on any Nikon digital SLR camerareleased since 1999.

History

Sigma has the largest family tree of universal high-aperture zoom lenses. It is sometimes very difficult to distinguish one model from another, as well as find information on a particular modification.

Below are listed all such lenses in chronological order of their publication, the names are indicated according to the spelling on the lens housing or near the front lens, and the optical design and the number of special elements are indicated:

  1. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom, 13/10 [0], since May 1992, aka Vivitar Series 1 28-70/2.8 VMC
  2. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX Ashperical [+ -D], 15/12 [2 ASP], from the end 1998
  3. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX aspherical DF [+ -D], 15/12 [2 ASP], since February 2001
  4. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG aspherical [+ -D], [DF] 14/13 [3 ASP, 2 SLD], since February 2001
  5. Sigma 24-60mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG [+ -D], 16/15 [4 ASP, 2 SLD], several subversions, since May 2004
  6. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG Macro [+ -D], 14/13, [3 ASP, 2 SLD], since September 2004
  7. Sigma 28-70mm 1: 2.8 Zoom EX DG [+ -D], 14/12 [4 ASP, 2 SLD] since September 2004
  8. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM, 14/12 [3 ASP, 1 ELD, 2 SLD], since September 2008
  9. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG OS A, 19/14 [4 ASP, 3 SLD], since February 2017
  10. Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG DN A, 19/15 [3 ASP, 2 SLD, 6 FLD], since November 2019
  11. Sigma 28-70 mm 1:2.8 DG DN C, 16/12 [3 ASP, 2 SLD, 2 FLD], from February 2021

Separately, you can still identify almost universal:

  1. Sigma 20-40mm Zoom 1: 2.8 EX DG aspherical IF [+-D], 17/13 [2 ASP], since August 2001
  2. Sigma 24-35mm 1:2 DG A, 18/13 [1 ASP, 7 SLD, 1 FLD, 1 ASP SLD], since June 2015

Designations in the names of the lenses:

  • EX (EXcellent) - the highest quality professional lens
  • DG - the lens is designed for full-frame SLR digital cameras
  • DN - lens designed for mirrorless digital cameras
  • Df (Dual Focus) - a focusing system for convenient work with the focusing ring (DF is written near the front lens, or on the box / instruction)
  • IF (Iinternal Focusing) - internal focus
  • aspherical (ASP) - the presence of aspherical elements in the optical scheme
  • SLD (Special Low Dispersion) - special low dispersion elements in the optical scheme
  • FLD - (Fluorite-like Low Dispersion) - special low-disperse elements in the optical scheme with characteristics close to fluorite
  • ASP SLD (ASPherical Special Low Dispersion) - special elements that are simultaneously aspherical and low dispersion
  • ZOOM - zoom lens, the presence of zoom
  • HSM (Hyper Sabout nothing Motor) - ultrasonic focusing motor
  • OS (Optical Stabilizer) - built-in optical image stabilizer
  • A (Art) - Sigma Art Premium Lens Range
  • С (Ccontemporary) - a line of modern lenses with a good price / quality ratio
  • D - a letter in the name of the lens, which was placed only on some lenses for Nikon F cameras (analogue 'Nikon D') and Sony / Minolta (because the name of the lenses from the list is [plus or minus D]). Typically, the letter 'D' is located near the focal length indicated on the case, such as 20-40mmD, 24-60mmD, 24-70mmD, 28-70mmD)
Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

The lens from head to toe is crammed with special optical elements. In its optical scheme, consisting of 14 elements in 12 groups, there are already three ELD elements (Extraordinary Low Dispersion), two SLD elements (Special Low Dispersion) and three aspherical elements.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

The Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is 'plump' and heavy, weighs almost 800 grams, and uses a massive 82mm filter. It's a shame, but apparently Sigma and Tamron have decided not to switch to the 'kosher' 77mm used on most modern professional lenses. The lens itself is positioned as professional, as indicated by the letters 'EX' ('Excellent' - lenses of the highest quality). It is also a pity that the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM has no moisture and weather protection. When working with the lens, a slight backlash of the lens trunk can be felt and heard.

Included with the lens is a nice little case with a lock and a plastic tulip-shaped lens hood. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation, while completely losing access to the focus ring. The lens hood is installed in special grooves near the front lens.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM has an internal focusing type. When the focal length is changed, the lens trunk is noticeably lengthened, but, at the same time, it does not rotate. The rear lens moves when zooming. The lens has only one switch - focus mode 'AF / M'.

Focusing speed is very pleased. Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM focuses quickly. The lens that I visited in review sometimes emitted a thin squeak when focusing, which annoyed me very much. True, despite the fast focus, the number of misses was more than expected. When used on cameras Nikon D700 и Nikon D80 the lens often jerked the focus perceptibly (focus micro-shifts, easy to see in JVI and hear the quiet clicks of the motor when changing the direction of focus) when focusing on stationary objects.

Focusing works correctly in Live View (tested on Nikon D700).

Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM can focus from 38 cm and give a maximum magnification of 1: 5.3. The lens has a focus distance scale in meters and feet, as well as a depth of field scale for F / 4, 11, 22 (only for 24 mm).

The focus ring is rubberized, has a 90 degree smooth stroke. During auto focus, the ring remains stationary. It is stated that the lens supports constant manual focus control. Indeed, such control is present, but it is by no means a semblance of a regime Nikon M / A, and, in fact, performing manual focus correction with the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM in AF-C You begin to compete with the automation of the camera and lens. Personally, this annoys me a lot.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

The benefits of a fast aperture zoom lens are hard to overestimate. Personally, I came to the conclusion that whatever you say, a class 24 (28) -70 (75) /2.8 lens is extremely useful in a huge number of photo tasks and this range of focal lengths is constantly used.

When using relatively heavy zoom lenses, they often have to be supported with the left hand to maintain weight balance. It is extremely convenient for the zoom ring to be located 'in front' of the lens, or at least in the middle. Unfortunately, the zoom ring of the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is rubberized, but it is too close to the camera mount.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

My experience with the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM has not been the best. Unfortunately, I decided to take him to shoot one of the weddings, because now there is a sorely lack of time for 'separate photography for reviews'. Taking the lens out of the case to test it on 'people', I discovered that the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM doesn't want to be friends with my Nikons at all SB-900 и D700 in TTL modes. Paired with this lens, the flash constantly gave the most severe overexposure, both when shooting indoors, at shutter speeds not exceeding the FP threshold, and outdoors, in FP mode. In the room, we had to set the power correction 'mins 1.3-1.7'. I did not manage to figure out the reasons for such outlandish behavior. If you perform the correct power compensation, or shoot in non-TTL modes, then the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM is just right for wedding photography, especially if you don't experiment with F / 2.8 :).

I believe that instead of the new Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM it is better to find used option Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (the difference in price is not so great). I also think that the native Nikon 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor much better than Sigma. Usually such a lens is taken for 'serious' shooting and in such cases it is not worth saving. And I advise the owners of cropped cameras to take a closer look at Sigma Zoom 17-50mm 1: 2.8 EX DC OS HSM.

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM

In Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM I liked the diaphragm with 9 rounded petals, giving smooth circles in the blur zone and well-adjusted chromatic aberration... The main question that worries many is whether the working aperture is F / 2.8. The answer is simple - it is suitable for many tasks, especially if you do not use the extreme zoom positions. At F / 4, everything becomes much more fun and you can shoot without fear of sharpness.

The Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM is generally a good lens and can serve as an alternative to the native flagships of the 24-70 / 2.8 class.

I had (and still have) experience with this lens. I used it on the D7000 (yes, I am aware that the lens is for a full-frame camera, and I use it on the crop). That's not the point. After 2,5 years (about 5 thousand frames were shot on the lens), the focusing motor sharply refused. Those. The lens tries to focus, there is a crackling sound, some kind of crunching sound, sometimes it comes into focus - but it doesn’t get clear photos. The lens was not dropped or shaken. Started using this lens in manual mode

  • Pokekmon

I saw and heard reviews of this glass, which often (and forever) the motor dies.
Someone after 2 years, someone after 3 years, and someone died after 5 years.
    Is it all so sad?
At the moment, of the new ones, this is the cheapest glass of the 24-70 / 2.8 class.

I have two 24-70 EX DG HSM sigma on my hands, both the same, but there is a difference, this is the cover of the case, one is completely matte, like a soft touch or some kind of velvet, and the second is glossy, just a smooth smooth coating, and on the fact that the matte serial does not have a barcode icon as in the picture in your review, but that it has a glossy one. it is strange that such differences did not notice the difference in the output picture board. another one sometimes emits a squeak when focusing, not always, but at certain definite focus positions. I didn’t notice another, what kind of case do they usually have? matte or gloss? who come across what? and is it normal that squeak when focusing? can the motor cover?

    • Boris

      Matte first years of production

  • Pokekmon

    All the good days!
    I choose between used Nikkor 28-70 / 2.8 and used Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG.
I heard that both Nikkor and this Sigma have motors dying from time to time, or rather a resource is being developed.
How to determine this? How to understand, upon examination, that the motor is running out of gas?
I had only non-motorized windows, so I ask)
And how much will motor repair cost in a good expensive service?
Which of these glasses has more reliable motors?
This kind of sigma is still being produced and you can pick up glasses that are not very ushatched, but with Nikkor it is more difficult - as I understand it, you can find something alive only for 40 thousand rubles.

Good lenses are often not sold. The lens lay for a long time and did not work, not the fact that it is the best. As luck would have it ... it's financial. It is better to buy with a guarantee and it is not a fact that the best one. The Sigma AF 24-70mm f / 2.8 IF EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM on the D7000 worked fine for me. I decided to buy a D610 or D750 and rearranged the Sigma AF 24-70mm f / 2.8 IF EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM from my D7000 in the store. The lens Sigma AF 24-70mm D610 and D750 does not plow ... back to the D7000 it is very fast ... and I tried it on Df and it works smartly there. I bought Df ... Probably the firmware of the D610 and D750 could not control the operation of the Sigma AF 24-70mm f / 2.8 IF EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM ... And there were no new such lenses in the store ... the verdict of the sales assistant was to carry the lens to the service ... Why? Plows on D7000 and Df ...

Nikon seems to have a characteristic whistle when the motor is running, so soon there will be a kirdyk. Read about Nikon glass here and there was an article about focusing motors. Somewhere this defect was described

  • Andrei

Good day. Do you have experience comparing Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG HSM and Tamron 28-75 / 2.8?
I would like to hear your opinion on the photos taken with this lens in full frame on an open aperture. Interested in sharpness, color reproduction, bokeh.
    Thank you in advance.

    • Andry

I use this sigma, 2.8 is quite working, I like the colors, the sharpness is pretty good, the main thing is to get the focus, there are instances with the front-back .. they don’t even compare with this tamron, they say shitty .. but the tamron is the one that is 24-70, that yes, you can compare and then for an amateur

  • Andrei

It’s like I also originally used it on the D7000, I was not particularly happy, but when I bought the D610, it showed itself in a completely different way, and the 2.8 hole worked, and the sharpness appeared, the colors are excellent, and how it keeps the back-up is generally fantastic, it was originally full frame is designed so that if and where to strangle the toad it’s on the full frame, and since the lens is normal, it has no analogue for its price. And if it’s more expensive, then this is the new 24-70 Art sigma, which will break the native niccor in the trash.

  • DmitryK

I bought a cheaply rare copy of the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG MACRO under the SIGMA SA mount.
At 2.8, my copy is not working - some kind of glow appears and the picture looks like the old Tokins - Tokina GLOW. No fungus or mold - the glass is fine. By 4.0 everything is back to normal.
The picture is nice, but not very sharp. At 24mm, you have to close the diaphragm harder to pull out the edges and corners. The bokeh is pleasant, the picture is voluminous, the focusing speed is low, there are quite a few misses.

    • DmitryK

I forgot to add - the camera for the lens is native - SIGMA SD1 Merrill.

  • DmitryK

I take my words back about the Sigma AF 24-70mm /2.8 EX DG MACRO.
Yesterday I walked around VDNKh and took 300-odd photos. To be honest, I thought that there would be half of the marriage, especially with open diaphragms. However, no. The lens was developed or something ...
I have a rare version for the SIGMA SA mount and on my camera - the SIGMA SD1 is difficult to understand whether it got exactly where it should be or whether it hit the back / front.
Probably, the camera was capricious at first due to the fact that SD1 does not particularly like glasses for FF and with glass like 35 / 1.4A ART, or this 24-70 / 2.8 requires very careful attention to setting the exposure meter, setting the WB and adjusting / adjusting the exposure meter , which is better to put in a minus right away, for example -0,3. The colors become bold and thick. And if you get into focus, then the photo simply delights - at least from the fact that what was conceived happened.
This is not Nikon D4 for you - he pointed, pressed the shutter, focused instantly, the photo is ready, and after that little is needed to adjust the picture - and the colors and exposure are adequate, unless the glass is completely junk.
On Sigma, any overexposure is fatal, there is nothing to extend. In short, the lens is decent, the main thing is to carefully set everything up in advance in the camera and not require impossible things for it.

“The lens is suitable for cropped Nikon DX cameras and Nikon FX full format cameras” - sorry, Nikon FX are SMALL format cameras. Not even medium format! Sorry again.

    • Novel

Well, strictly speaking, yes, small-format, but full-frame.

Hello. There is a whale lens Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX. I want to replace it with a SIGMA 28-70 2.8 EX DG
Here is a link to it https://www.olx.ua/obyavlenie/sigma-28-70-2-8-ex-dg-nikon-sostoyanie-novogo-IDtfEbM.html
Question: which lens is sharper and does it make sense to change? The range of focal lengths of one that suits me the second, the aperture of Sigma naturally attracts, but there remains an open question about the sharpness at the edges and light at the edges. Here is an example photo from Sigma. Here are photos 28 and 70 on the open and 5.6 https://fex.net/288006322727
    Please consult)

In general, there is such a glass. I took it at the beginning on nikon 3100. Shustril perfectly. No focus problems and other sharpness lack of chromaticity is all normal. But when switching to D610, problems started. Firstly, in TTL mode with a flash (external), there is really often overexposure, too often. Also, the focus began to fail, blunders went. If the shooting is slow, then in principle you can take money out, if for the money in the dynamics then don’t have an ice look at another glass (Do not bombard the wedding on it normally).

    Hello!
I'm interested in this lens, only for Pentax.
If you choose between it and Tamron AF SP DI 90mm / 2.8 Macro 1: 1, what do you recommend?
For the task - subject shooting (for myself).

Arkady, after many reviews and lenses. What do you recommend as a universal lens on Nikon, which is cheaper than Nikkor 24-70 and 28-75?
I visited 2 lenses from Tamron (17-50 and 28-75), as well as a lens from Sigma (fifty dollars, f1.4 is not an art version). The latter was not bad, but reviews that universal sigma are still worse than a tampon in terms of sharpness scare us.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Then Tamron 24-70 G2

  • Sergei

I faced such a problem yesterday. When the lens is installed on the Nikon D5400, autofocus does not work and it seems that the camera stupidly does not see the lens, the native Nikkors work without problems. At the same time, autofocus works without problems on the D5100 and D3000 with this lens.

I mean that Nikon in the last cropped cameras twisted something, because even the stabilizer is now turned off in the camera, and not the lens.

    • Michael

With each new firmware or its update, the manufacturer tries to cut off non-native lenses. So nothing surprising ...

The 8th link leads to the same page,
although this paragraph should not be a reference at all.
You just need to indicate that this particular lens
and is considered in the current review (as you did earlier, Arkady).

    • Arkady Shapoval

she should lead to the same page

      • kolodiazniy

There is no logic to this. Drive traffic?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Why not. Firstly, it has nothing to do with traffic, I generally try not to bother myself with such things. Secondly, no logic is violated, it is extremely difficult for me to understand why this link bothers you?
Thirdly, this state of things is associated with certain features of the site, in this case, the history of all Sigma is responsible for a separate special module (block), which is pulled into all the articles where the page calls it. The block is the same for all pages with similar Sigma, for all reviews of similar Sigma, the text of the story is the same and you can’t just take and change links for each of them separately. This simplifies the work with the site, in particular, speeds up the addition of information to all linked pages and its optimization, since changes occur only in one local place.

          • kolodiazniy

Got you. Then everything is clear.

  • Peter Sh.

On the subject of sharpness, resolution, MTF and other spherical horses in a vacuum. And what does all this have to do with the real three-dimensional world.
Recently I came across an investigation of the depth of field zone of the Sigma 24-70mm f / 2.8 DG OS Art. Not a cheap lens, as you know.
Please note that this chart is only one instance. For others, the picture may be slightly different.

Damn, an authoritative site, cool glasses on the review, but ... the author takes pictures of wild old stuff, which is not friendly with half of the glasses. How can you get an objective review? like ... they sent me Tsais glass, but he is not friends with my 85th Nikon and therefore let me down at the next wedding ... well, how-so? !! it is no longer the glass that fails, but the hole in the pocket. Or in my head, God forbid

    • Trueash

I am not an author, but since you speak of him in the third person, I will take the audacity to answer for him. So, your choice: 1) buy something newer for the author ... d850, for example; 2) use other resources; 3) review for yourself.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If we take this review specifically, then the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM lens was presented in September 2008, in the review there are pictures including the d700, presented in July 2008, and therefore everything is very much even correlated. In addition, it should be borne in mind that this review is already 7 years old. For example, at the time of creating this review, d800 literally just appeared in our places

The author is experimenting, but this time for some reason not on the crop)))

good afternoon, we take off the clothes on the models indoors .. studio light with a pulse on the camera .. you need sharp photos to show the texture of fabric and clothing details .. Question: is this lens suitable for this kind of shooting with the D700 camera?

    • Dmitry Kostin

“Question: is this lens suitable for this kind of shooting with the D700?”
It will work, BUT you need to check the AF operation before buying, how accurately a third-party lens will work with Nikon.
My advice, if you have money, is better to buy a Nikon 24-70 / 2.8G - it will definitely be sharper.
Or Nikon 28-70 / 2.8 D, but you need to look for a lens in good condition.
“Sharp photographs are needed to show the texture of the fabric and the details of the clothes ..”
There is another point here - if you choose a lens that is too sharp, there is a risk of getting Moire in some frames:

    • Artem

Buy an 85mm prime and close down to f/8 and you can't go wrong with sharpness. For the most part, any lens will do if you close the aperture closer to 8. The light is still studio, and for shooting clothes you need everything to be in depth of field.

  • Stas

Arkady, colleagues, good afternoon. I read your reviews all the time! Tell me, I looked after this lens, more precisely 24-70mm f2,8 DG OS HSM (A) Nikon, but it is not in the review. I understand they are pretty much the same. The question is, now I have a standard kit AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G, will there be a noticeable difference in quality between the old and well-looked-for lenses?

    • Arkady Shapoval

yes, there will be a significant difference

      • Stas

        Thank you for your reply!

  • Sergos

arose with \sigma 24-70 ex dg macro for sonya \an interesting incident ... I took it on Avito with a poorly working autofocus last year for 5tr, there are no complaints about the quality, it creaks when turned on, it adjusts, then I use it as a manual f2.8 .. looked somehow exif-what kind of aperture? -I see: yeah-2.8, and model 28-80 f3.5-5.6, without the inscription “sigma” ... but the lens is sigma !! either I did it wrong. if .... there is time, answer those who know .... by the way, the motor works, but you need to move the zoom wheel back and forth several times for autofocus to work ... and one more thing: you can work at 42 megapixels - sharp in the center, but I have no special requirements for the edges, corners, especially for this price. Through adapters for sony e-fe, I don’t recommend working with autofocus at all - you have to feel sorry for the adapters.
