Sony 2.8 / 16 Fish-Eye SAL16F28 review

Sony 2.8 / 16 Fish-Eye SAL16F28 review

The Sony 2.8 / 16 Fish-Eye SAL16F28 is a conventional diagonal fisheye lens for full frame 'A' mount cameras. Like most similar lenses, it has a strongly convex front lens, which makes it impossible to use conventional light filters. In our open spaces, such a lens is usually called the 'Fish-Eye' (from the English 'Fish-Eye'). Most likely SAL16F28 is just a modified or full copy of the Minolta AF Lens 16 Fish-Eye.

On Sony APS-C type cameras (cropped sensor) EGF lens will be 24 mm, while the effect of curvature of straight lines will not go anywhere. For cropped cameras, it is better to find specialized lenses with a shorter focal length so that you can enjoy the full fisheye effect :).

The lens has a maximum relative aperture of 1: 2.8, and you can easily get a sharp image from the full aperture, however, only in the center of the frame. Like a considerable number of other super-wide-angle lenses, the SAL16F28 loses sharpness at the corners and edges of the frame; moreover, even on covered apertures, very strong are noticeable in the corners of the frame chromatic aberration. To bring the angles in order, you need to shoot at apertures no more than F / 11-F / 13. Due to the small focal length you can easily take off, even at long exposures, of the order of 1/20 s. The AL16F28 can close the aperture up to f / 22, while the image quality does not suffer much from diffraction and remains sharp enough (when used on a 24 megapixel Sony a7 camera). The lens catches glare and sunbeams with strong sources in the frame (and a homemade lens hood will not help, because it will fall into the frame). Strong vignetting is only present at f / 2.8 when focusing at infinity.

In fact, who cares about any pixel-by-pixel battles, if everyone is primarily looking at the incredible rendering of perspective and unusual distortion across the entire field of the frame?

Sony 2.8 / 16 Fish-Eye SAL16F28, rear view

The lens has a fixed tulip hood. Instead of a cover, there is a soft leather pouch that fits over the front of the lens. The SAL16F28 is well built and has a narrow rubberized focusing ring that rotates 90 degrees. Weighs 390 grams. The lens has a focusing distance scale and depth of field for f / 4, 8, 11, 16, 22. The MDF is only 20 cm, and the maximum magnification ratio is 1: 6.7. The lens uses an aperture of only 6 blades.

Despite the fact that the lens does not have a built-in motor, it focuses very quickly (on the camera with a screwdriver, of course). I shot on SAL16F28 on Sony A7 using an adapter Sony LA-EA4... When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk only lengthens slightly. Also, the rear lens moves slightly when focusing. The lens has a 'hard stop' (hard stop - clearly marked infinity, turned all the way - focused at infinity).

The focusing motor is located in the camera. The SAL16F28 will automatically focus on all Sony or Konica Minolta DSLRs:

APS-C (with cropped sensor):

Full Frame (with full frame sensor):

For autofocus on Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the SAL16F28 lens must be used with the original adapter. For cropped mirrorless cameras, you can get by with the Sony LA-EA2 adapter. For full frame mirrorless cameras, an adapter must be used Sony LA-EA4 or Sony LA-EA5. It's important: Sony LA-EA1 and Sony LA-EA3 adapters will not allow autofocus with this lens.

Sony E, APS-C (with cropped sensor), Sony E Full Frame (with full frame sensor).

A feature of the lens is a set of built-in color filters. The filters are changed using a special metal ring located behind the focus ring. To replace the filter, pull the ring toward the camera mount and then turn until it clicks.

You can use 4 color filters:

  • Normal - neutral filter
  • O 56 - 1 stop is lost excerpts
  • A 12 - about 2/3 of a stop is lost
  • B 12 - lost near the stop

Filters are designed for use with film cameras and are of little use for digital cameras. For example - filter O 56 Used with black and white film to enhance the contrast between the sky and other objects in the frame.

Here's what happens when shooting with a digital camera and various filters:

In general, with the lens, you can shoot a bunch of interesting stories and play with its unusual picture. Many amateur photographers often want to shoot a fish, but after playing for a day or two, throw it on a shelf (the same thing happens with some macro lenses). Shooting for fisheye requires a special approach, I do not advise getting such a lens without any special need.

The Sony 2.8 / 16 Fish-Eye SAL16F28 is an interesting full-length Fisheye. Sony simply has no other, native, alternatives to this lens. It is not the best optically, but nevertheless it performs its functions well. Understanding photographers will be able to squeeze a lot of interesting shots from this small lens :)

Pretty interesting view of the world through this lens)

    • Jackie

Especially photographs taken from above. It can be seen that the Earth is actually round :)

      • Arkady Shapoval

This is just a visual deception due to the barrel-shaped uncorrected distortion of the lens (in fact, its chips). the lens bends the straight horizon line, if it is not placed in the center of the frame, bends as shown in the photo :)

        • Jackie

But purely out of curiosity, I wonder - how does this distortion affect, say, in portrait photography? :) Imagination suggests unusual pictures :)

          • Arkady Shapoval

Distortion is used for artistic purposes, that’s the whole secret. At the same time, it will be extremely difficult to get a classic portrait.

            • Jackie

In any case, the effect is very interesting. Arkady, tell me - did you have to use fish in your professional activities, or does this version of the image find demand?

              • Arkady Shapoval

For work, I do not use fish. Although he once worked at some evening event and shot some material on his fellow colleague.

Interesting photos are obtained by dancing and round dances (for example: http://vasi1y.users.photofile.ru/photo/vasi1y/200692256/213318251.jpg - Canon 5D MkII + Zenitar-16) - I think that several such frames can be inserted into wedding photo shoots.

          • Jury

the portraits themselves will not like the portraits, and the rest will be amused, I, once, just watched a fit of laughter when watching such portraits :)

The cityscape with this glass is a very specific matter. However, if there are no corners in the frame, but only ovals and circles, it’s even nothing! Such a lens is probably not worth buying, but renting. (or even the consciousness is deformed) Although the picture is entertaining.

It's good that there were no marketers before, otherwise we would have thought that at the “last supper” there was a round table

  • Oleg

Fish-Eye lens - bought, played, sold.

  • Sergei

Cool photos, but slightly quenched with bends, from a height in general, super shooting came out, I noticed few people in the frame in the photo, in cafes on the street - usually you have more of them in the frame.

  • Nicholas

Interesting eye! Sony unusual technique !!!

    Do not engage in self-hypnosis.

I want to add that at full frame we will have a viewing angle of 180 degrees and 120 on crop. In general, a fisheye with a focal length of 16 mm is designed for a full frame.
For crop, 6.5-10 mm is needed.
At the price of a Zenit fish, it turns out beyond competition ...

About Zenitar either good or nothing)))). No harshness, no bokeh, nothing. And therefore it costs almost nothing ...

Hello. I wanted to ask the SONY 16 mm f | 2.8 Fisheye lens (lens * fisheye * SAL-16F28) compatible with the Sony DSLR A 77 II camera. Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good day. SAL-16F28 is compatible with Sony DSLR A 77 II. But this is a cropped camera and with this lens the viewing angle will be less.
