According provided by lens Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/24 ZA T * SSM Sony SAL24F20Z huge thanks Sony Ukraine.
Sony has been producing lenses for various devices in conjunction with Carl Zeiss since 1996. Now Sony in its factories produces lenses for SLR and SLT cameras. Zeiss takes charge of quality control. In this way, you can enjoy the modern Carl Zeiss with automatic focus and other delights of today.
History
In 2006, Sony and Zeiss became partners in the production of lenses and released the first three joint lenses: Carl Zeiss 85 / 1.4, 135 / 1.8 and 16-80 / 3.5-4.5 for SLR cameras with Sony A / Minolta A mount. In the future, their cooperation continued and resulted in many other decisions.

I came across a lens on the frame, near the front lens, 'Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/24 ZA T * SSM' and somewhere on the side, near the mount, in small letters - 'Sony SAL24F20Z'. Many people are used to thinking that Carl Zeiss lenses for SLR cameras are manual, Sony has added a few modern technologies to Carl Zeiss, for example, such as an SSM focus motor and put the lens on the 'A' mount. It is worth noting that the Sony SAL24F20Z is the first Carl Zeiss lens with an SSM focusing motor, launched in the summer of 2010.
SSM - Super Sonic waves Motor - Ultrasonic Motor
With SSM, auto focus was fast and quiet enough.
Sony SAL24F20Z will auto focus on all DSLR cameras from Sony or Konica Minolta:
APS-C (with cropped sensor):
- DSLR: Sony a100, a200, a230, a290, a300, a330, a350, a380, a390, a450, a500, a550, a560, a580, a700 + Konica Minolta Dynax / Alpha / Maxxum 7D, Konica Minolta Dynax / Alpha Sweet Digital / Maxxum 5D
- SLT: Sony a33, a35, a37, a55, a57, a58, a65, a68, a77, a77II
Full Frame (with full frame sensor):
For autofocus on Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the Sony SAL24F20Z lens must be used with the original adapter. For cropped mirrorless cameras, you can get by with the Sony LA-EA1 or Sony LA-EA2 adapter. For full frame mirrorless cameras, use Sony LA-EA3 adapters, Sony LA-EA4 or Sony LA-EA5
Sony E, APS-C (with cropped sensor), Sony E Full Frame (with full frame sensor).
I wanted to make this review in one simple sentence - the lens is very good, buy and shoot, but in the end, I had to force myself to stomp around the keyboard a little :)
You take the SAL24F20Z in your hands - you immediately feel a pleasant weight, apparently in its insides there is still a whole bunch of glasses, and even in a metal case. The lens weighs as much as 555 grams. It is a pity that the supplied ALC-SH110 hood is made of plastic, and that the lens has no dust and moisture protection. The SAL24F20Z itself is plump, the diameter of the front light filter is 72 mm (the thread for the light filter is also metal).
The lens has a window with a focus distance scale in meters and feet, as well as a depth of field scale. Inner Focusing - when focusing, the front lens remains stationary, only the rear lens group moves. The focusing ring is wide, metal, rotates very smoothly at 120 degrees. The ring does not rotate during autofocus. It's a pity, but the lens does not have a hard stop (accurate and fast aiming at infinity in any temperature conditions). The MDF is 19 cm. Also, the SAL24F20Z has an MF / AF focus operation switch and special button, which by default stops auto focus. This button can be reprogrammed using the camera menu (I could not do this on the Sony A7).
The lens supports DMF (DDirectly MAnnual Pass Focus - direct manual focus). On the Sony a7 camera, the focus ring obeys manual control only if the focus mode is DMF (Direct RF) or MF (Manual focus), and in AF-A (Single AF) and AF-C (Continuous AF) modes, you begin to fight with the camera for focus control.
The aperture device has 9 rounded blades that can be closed up to f / 22. It would also have a maximum aperture of F / 1.4, like the top wide-angles Nikon and Canon - it would not have been worth it. It is worth noting that a number of Sony cameras have an image stabilization system directly in the camera itself, therefore, in some shooting conditions, F / 2.0 in Sony SAL24F20Z can be much more effective than F / 1.4 in Nikon and Canon :). True, I shot with Sony SAL24F20Z on a Sony a7 full-frame camera using an adapter Sony LA-EA4, and an additional stop of aperture would not be superfluous, because Sony a7, a7r, a7s cameras do not have a vaunted stabilization system.
With the image quality of the lens, everything is in order.

The Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/24 ZA T * SSM Sony SAL24F20Z is a very nice lens. Optically and mechanically very good. One of the best wide angle lenses I have ever used. In addition, the SAL24F20Z can serve as a regular fixed lens for cropped cameras, where it EGF will be 36 mm.
Material prepared Arkady Shapoval.
Just stunned! This is the lens!
Shoots “all the money” :) I liked it too.
Tsikave sklo, photos were honored. The first price is adequate as for me, one F2.0 .., “… an extra stop of aperture would not be superfluous, because Sony a7, a7r, a7s cameras do not have the vaunted stabilization system.” - a spoonful of diogty in bochtsi honey, I want analogs on nikoni and kenoni 24 / 1.4 paths, but I think all the same 1,4 can be more kind in poorly illuminated situations.
Look around. Bachu Sonya “bomb” you with technology, but I didn't want to sleep, but they didn’t sleep, but got to good luck ..)))
Does it seem to me alone that in a photograph with curtains-vermicelli these curtains move? :)

Cool review. Zeiss optics has always been at the level of a cult.
Zeiss - Germans, and this is not a little zeiss, or shall we say - zeiss with Japanese motives? where is Japan more
Yes, that would be the kind of lenses - yes to the amateur masses (the pros will be removed anyway)! ..
Arkady, if you still find time to read the comments, I have long wanted to ask, but do you know what kind of glasses were filmed by military and labor parades of the times of the USSR, in any weather, but how they filmed - in a walking box (120 steps per minute) (a this is a battalion!) is each face visible, recognizable?
And further. Give, be affectionate, a link, if you have already given review articles about this?
Good afternoon!
Arkady, thanks for the review! In fact, ordinary pictures, normal color reproduction, slightly cool colors from Sony, the geometry suffers. Just a standard lens.
