Nikon D300s Review

Nikon D300s Review

On August 23, 2007, Nikon introduced a professional (that is how the company positioned it) cropped camera Nikon D300. At that time the camera was the dream of many photographers.

For its excellent performance and reliability, the camera was even called 'little D3' and other flattering epithets. IN Nikon D300 for the first time, among all Nikon cropped cameras, they started using RAW files with 14-bit color depth, appeared a large 3-inch display, automatic correction HA and new focusing system - Multi-CAM 3500DX... Two years later, on June 30, 2009, an updated model was presented - Nikon D300S. Models D300 and the D300S were very similar, so as not to repeat the review Nikon D300I will simply describe their differences:

Nikon D300S increased burst speed without using a battery pack. D300S can shoot at speed 7 fps, D300 could only shoot at 6 fps. Nikon D300s can accelerate and shoot at the fastest possible speed 8 fpsbut only when using JPEG format or 12-bit color depth in RAW format and only using the optional battery pack MB-D10 or network adapter EH-5a / EH-5. To make the camera shoot at a speed of 8 fps, one MB-D10 not enough. You need to use a special holder MS-D10 with 8 AA cells (batteries or rechargeable batteries). The MS-D10 holder is supplied with MB-D10. Also, 8 fps can be achieved using a more capacious battery. EN-EL4 (from cameras Nikon D2h, D2hs, D2x, D2xs) Or EN-EL4a (from cameras Nikon D3s, D3, D3x), but this requires the optional BL-3 cover (which is not included with the MB-D10). In addition, if you buy a battery EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a, you will have to additionally buy and charge Nikon MH-21 / Nikon MH-22 for it. If in MB-D10 use a regular standard battery EN-EL3e, then the burst speed will not change. Battery pack MB-D10 equally suitable for D300, D300S and D700... Personally, I don't like the fact that for these cameras you have to 'dance with a tambourine' to achieve the coveted 8 fps.

Added function 'Virtual horizon'when sighting via Live View. The same function was available for Nikon D3but was not copied to Nikon D300.

Added by movie function... True, the D300S only shoots with the maximum quality up to HD 1280X720 at 24 fps and the maximum video length is only 5 minutes. Also, the modes 640X424 and 320X216 are available at the same frame rate, while the shooting duration is increased to 20 minutes. Unlike predecessor models - Nikon D90 and D5000, the D300S has the ability to shoot movies using contrast focus. The D300S is the first Nikon CZK to have auto focus when shooting video (to focus, select Live View 'Tripod' mode and press the AF-ON button when recording video). Video recording is considered to be one of the main differences between the D300 and D300S. Also in the D300S you can find an audio input for using a stereo microphone, and speaker to output sound when watching a video. And in the menu there was a function for a very simple video editing.

Now you can shoot a video :)

At D300S removed the lock for opening the memory card compartment, which was in the D300. The memory card cover now opens just like on D700. Some buttons have changed. Appeared on the D300s 'LV' button To quickly switch to Live View mode, on the D300, this mode was selected on the control tower. Comfortable added 'Info' button, same as on D700, and with it a new interactive display (can display data on a black or white background, depending on the illumination). And most importantly, the central joystick button was made separate. On the D300, it was sometimes inconvenient to press the center button of the joystick. On the D300s, the center button is just as easy to use as on D700 и D90.

Appeared in a new camera quiet shooting mode 'Q' ('Quiet' - 'Quiet'), which is selected by the wheel on the control tower. In turn, the 'LV' mode disappeared from there, which is now activated by the 'LV' button near the joystick.

D300S now has the ability to use immediately 2 memory cards 2 different types SD (SDHC) and CF. The D300 only worked with one memory card type CF. Of course, various options for recording data on memory cards have been added.

  • It is possible to record pictures first on one card, and when it is filled - on another.
  • You can duplicate material onto two cards at once, which is sometimes an indispensable function for saving images in the event of failure of one of the cards.
  • It is possible to write RAW and JPEG files to different cards separately.
  • You can specify a card on which video files will be recorded.

Only one of the specified working methods is selected.

Added by face detection function on the footage, with the ability to instantly increase this part of the picture.

The function of determining faces. The picture is taken on the official website of Nikon.

The image quality has improved slightly, but such a dramatic change as when switching from Nikon D3 on Nikon D3s Did not happen. You can see the synthetic comparison here.

You can find information that cameras use a different matrix: IMX021 at D300 and IMX038 D300s (as well as D90 and D5000). But information varies from source to source. Based on the data from the instructions for cameras, we can conclude that the Nikon D300s has the same sensor as the Nikon D300 and differs from the sensors installed in Nikon D90 and Nikon D5000 (easy to determine by the total pixels / subpixels) But all the majority of sources agree that D300s are used IMX038.

The picture in the Live View mode on the Nikon D300 slowed down noticeably (a similar problem also exists Nikon D700) On D300s in Live View, the picture is displayed normally.

Nikon D300S uses HDMI Type 'C', D300 uses Type 'A'.

The menu is a little different, in addition, Nikon D300s can edit the shot material, including RAW files.

It is very strange that the D300S not cured of a serious illness, which was available in the D300. Both cameras become very slow when shooting with 14-bit color depth, while the maximum burst speed is a measly 2.5 fps. For instance, Nikon D3 from the same era, chewed 14-bit RAW at 9 fps without any problems. Yes and D700, which was released between the D300 and D300S, coped with this task without problems at a speed of 8 fps. By the way, a disease with brakes from processing 14-bit RAW files was transmitted Nikon D7100 (cannot accelerate to 7 fps, works at 6 fps) and Nikon D5300 (It cannot accelerate to 5 fps, it works at 4 fps).

Here link to the archive with the originals - 1.07 GB, 44 .NEF photos (RAW) Shot on Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (MKII),

My experience

For me, the only important innovations in the D300S are: the ability to work with 2 memory cards, a slight improvement in image quality and an adequate central joystick button. It may seem strange, but just one single button makes the D300S much more convenient to use. On the D300 and D200 I was constantly nervous about this stupid button that you press while pushing the entire joystick into the camera body, but as a result, I can’t push it (instead, one of the joystick directions is pressed).

Nikon D300S is still the best crop reportage camera. No offense, but all of these Nikon D7100 и D7200 They are located in the lower class, do not accelerate to 8 frames per second, have a meager buffer, do not have such a robust housing and professional controls like the Nikon D300S.

Attention quote! This text once came to my mail. Spelling and punctuation of the original are preserved.

“Good afternoon, Arkady. I own the BEST Nikon camera ever. And you still haven't reviewed this camera. In general, I think that you only needed to review her and EVERYTHING. The rest of Nikon's cameras aren't even worthy of public attention. There is only ONE best camera, the Nikon D300s the best camera for real alpha males! 7fps, best white balance, 2 CF + SD slots, super ergonomics, shooting video clips 720p, really working ISO3200, 51 AF points scattered from edge to edge of the frame (and not shot down in the center like D700, D600, D610, D7000) 100% viewfinder coverage (versus 97% for the Nikon D700) and by the way it is VERY different for the better from the D300, these are two different cameras, heaven and earth. It is even better than the full-frame Nikon D700 which, by the way, is DISPATCH white balance, OH I put it wrong, Nikon D700 has Yellow Balance instead of White))) In general, finally make a review of the BEST Nikon camera. I wish you creative success. And a good day."

D300S officially discontinued.

'B. at.-shnuyu'. Nikon D300S sells one and a half to two times more expensive than Nikon D300. Personally, I think that when choosing between the D300 and D300S, a photographer should think 10 times whether he should pay extra for video shooting and a few more small improvements.

Hello. In the yard was 2019, in my pocket was 15000r.
I decided to buy a camera again, but in connection with the mega-modest budget, the choice, for me, is not great.
After their former D7000, purely ergonomic cameras of the 3xxx, 5xxx series are not interesting, I do not like the controls.
In this connection, I choose between D90, D300S, and again D7000 ... I understand that 7000 of this trio are newer and more advanced, but it is also more expensive than the old 90 and 300s, YES AND AS IT WAS ALREADY SUCH, I want it least of all. In this connection, the question is, what would you advise to buy? Go back to 7000, or consider 300s and d90. which one is more interesting to buy. I take it for myself. Photos of nature, sunrises, sunsets, architecture. Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

The D7000 is preferable, the d300s is very pleasant to use, the d90 is not far from the d300s in the picture, it is similar to the d7000 in control.

      • Sergei

Thanks for the answer! I shot on d7000, I liked it, but a year ago I had to sell it ... Now I miss photography again. And now I'm thinking, take the same (ideally I dream of 7100, but after reading your site, I came to the conclusion that it is better to take a more expensive lens than a camera) as I had, or by reducing the cost of the purchase in the direction of increasing the cost of the lens, choose something from older cameras.

    • daniel

I have a very similar story. I’ve been shooting on the d7000 since I was 13 years old. I’m wildly tired of weak autofocus and bought the d300. More precisely, I bought it on eBee. While I wait, I decided to read the review of Arcadia. And here I see that the recommendation is to take d7000. I’m thinking whether I was in a hurry

      • Alexander

Autofocus d300s will definitely please you, it is atrocious there. Yes, the ability to customize literally everything, too, will not be superfluous. Honestly, I don’t see any significant advantages with the d7000.

        • Alexander

          I have both D7000 and D7100 ... Both cameras have excellent autofocus ... I didn't understand the phrase - "weak autofocus" ...

      • Vadim

No need to be so suggestible

    • Paskuda

I understand that my comment is no longer relevant. But I will speak out. I'm also thinking about buying a D90 now. But one man advised one of these old men to take the D300, and the D300s is better. But the fact is that the D90 costs 10-18 thousand with a lens, and the 300 is already from 20000. In good condition 35k. So for the beginner me, for now, the D90.

      • B. R. P.

The D90 is hard to find in good condition, just like the D300, but the 90 doesn't have the notorious gear problem, unlike the DXNUMX, at least.

      • Viktre

Neither the one nor the other.

        Save up for 7100.

  • Eugene

Good afternoon, Arkady. I want to thank you for this wonderful site. I have a question for you. Does it make sense now to switch from D300s to D700? Lenses from the film era are available (Af24 2.8D, Af35 2D, Af50 1,8D, Af70-210). Thanks in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it makes sense. There will be a different picture, in something better, in something worse.

  • Niko

Good day, dear forum users;) a proposal appeared D300s with 14681 click is it worth buying it?
    Thank you in advance.
Arkady thank you very much for this simply super-good informational site.

    • Neustrdm

Mileage is small, it all depends on price and condition

      • Maria

I was told in the service that it is much more terrible for czk than problems with the shutter - problems with the firmware. It is necessary to look, otherwise it is rather dreary to eliminate errors and resume later. I could be wrong.

    • Arkady Shapoval

14.000 mileage is nothing at all for d300s

  • Niko

Please tell me whether it is worth changing d3200 to D300s?

    • BB

Watching for what tasks. The age difference is big. What is missing on the D3200?

      • Niko

Honestly, everything suits the d3200, but as always I want something new :), most likely only because it does not have a "screwdriver"

        • BB

At d300 prof. management is probably better than AF. If you do not need professional ergonomics, then personally I would not recommend changing the d3200 to d300. The camera is old, Iso workers will be lower than on the d3200.
          If you don't look towards FF - I would recommend d7100 / 7200

          • Niko

Thank you very much for the advice, I will probably take it as a second option, work with it and sell it.

    • Alexander

If you yourself can not answer this question, then you should not). A screwdriver only makes sense if you have already aimed at some interesting non-motorized lens.

  • Andrei

Is it worth buying today to replace the D3100 or is it better to look towards other cameras?
I planned the D7100, but I want a more professional camera for professional growth.
In the first place, convenience in work for filming in the studio and on the street.
Budget from 200 to 500 cu

    • Andrei

      In stock still NIKON AF-S DX 35 mm f / 1.8G Lens

    • notapic

At the very D300s, the camera is a monster, for reporting the very thing is ISO 1600 workers. 12 MP, as for me, for a studio may not be enough. Otherwise, it’s a very good camera both for portrait shooting and on the street, including, the battery lasts a long time, the BB car works fine, the color reproduction in RAW is also pleasant to the eye.

      • Andrei

What is the lack of 12 megapixels for the studio?
Just before, it was enough when 300s was in demand.

        • Alexander

See for yourself. Some neglect the construction of the frame before shooting and then mercilessly cut the pictures in the editor, so 12mp will not be enough for them. Still little can be for those who print pictures in large format or love to consider small details at 100-200% magnification.

        • notapic

Mostly for crop shots, well, for very high detail pictures. I shot in the studio on D300s + Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 with an aperture closed to 8, so megapixels were not enough corny to reveal all the sharpness of the lens.

  • Anatoly

Help determine between d300s and d7100, what is better to take, a photo both on the street and in a photo studio? I still want to d300s but I'm afraid not to miscalculate, since it’s already old

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Definitely d7100

  • notapic

The camera has a rather unpleasant feature - in Live View you can't see how the exposure bar changes. If you switch to Live View in the dark, the exposure ratio (shutter speed + aperture) will be displayed correctly. If you aim the lens at light, the exposure bar will be the same as in the dark, however, the camera takes a picture with the correct exposure. So with me with manual and autofocus optics. To see the real value, you have to either constantly turn LV off and on, or shoot through the viewfinder, which is not always convenient, especially when focusing manually.

  • Gennady

I focus on the af-on button, then I take the picture with the shutter button naturally, but in this mode the camera often just does not respond to the shutter button and does not take a picture! As if it’s glitchy, you have to refocus again, then the shutter works (but sometimes it’s necessary even twice refocus to take a photo)
Question: What could be the reason?
    (Camera D300s + nikkor 50 mm 1.8G)
Thank you in advance for your response!

    • Arkady Shapoval

In focus priority mode. For AF-C or AF-S (whichever you use), give priority to shutter release

    • Valery A.

Maybe you have focusing priority - do a reframe, the focus point does not fall into the “out of focus”, the camera does not shoot.

      • Valery A.

        Hello. Here again.

  • Bogdan

    Good day.
Professional users of this camera, who can give a few practical exercises on this particular camera?
Bought his wife instead of an amateur DSLR, can not master some points.
    Write to mail knz.ukr@ukr.net

  • Daniel

I bought a d300s and it’s just super. It was a d7000 and for many years I couldn’t understand why it was soft and autofocus sometimes wildly dumb. there is no problem. autofocus is just class. The 300th thought and aimed and the 100th directed and shot. What else I wildly like is how the colors are transmitted. I don’t even want to deal with post processing. Added a photo. Filmed at 7000mm 300d.

    • Niko

I myself also bought a D300S in exchange for my D3200 and am very pleased. The device is a beast.

  • Victor

Arkady, it turned out that the new 16-80 2.8-4 works fine on the d300s, although it doesn’t work on the d90 before. Only on d7000 and beyond. Does this mean that the d300s already has options for working with a new type of diaphragm? What then fundamentally differ bayonet constructs d300 / 300s and d200 / Fuji s5 pro?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Well, D300, D300s should work with E-lenses, this is their regular function. List here.
The camera mounts are the same, the old cameras simply do not know in their firmware how to do this, how and what signals to send. And the manufacturer was too lazy to release new firmware. The same d90 and some old cameras selectively with some third-party E-lenses feel right. As an example, the same Yongnuo YN 85mm F1.8N

      • Victor

Thank you Arkady! E is the electromagnetic diaphragm?

        • Arkady Shapoval

yes, exactly, the link is described in detail :)

          • Victor

Thank you so much for your work!

  • Bogdan

    Advice please.
With a 35 / 1,8 lens, I can’t give a clear picture for 5 or more people. the central 3 people are in focus and clearly obtained, and the farther from the center, the blur is obtained.
How to fix or what settings to set so that it focuses on the entire screen area, or at least most.
Portraits or 2 people are perfect.

    • Alexey

      Read what is DOF.

    • B. R. P.

      Cover the diaphragm.

    • Anton

Still, perhaps this lens is stupidly soft or soapy at the edges. I haven’t tried this, but 18-105 is clearly noticeably weaker along the edges. Although in your case, most likely, the edges of the image really fall out of the depth of field.

  • Anton

Good afternoon. I have been using Nikon as a system for about a year, it was D90, now D300s. I use a bunch of systems in parallel - there are Sony A850, Panasonic DMC-L1, Pentax K10D and similar dinosaurs. Well, I like to try different fotiki, I tried 20 pieces. There were Canon 60D and 7D (I think this one is a model of ergonomics - maybe not by buttons and wheels, although everything is OK there too, in my opinion; but by the grasp of the body and the location of the shutter button for sure).
The question is, why does Nikon have such trouble with focus control? Why was there no such shit on 7D? :(
Namely - when shooting with a tripod (landscapes), it is often required to focus on foreground objects (a stone there, flowers almost underfoot), but then it is cropped so that the focus point falls to infinity. Accordingly, the release is locked (focusing priority, AF-S mode). If you set the release priority, the shutter is released, but there is no confirmation sound when focusing. It is inconvenient to look at the green dot in the viewfinder from a tripod, and it is easier to navigate the sound. Hyperfocal is not a panacea, sometimes you need to blur the background, and I don't want to clamp the diaphragm too much.
Is there a way to get a sound confirmation of focus, but at the same time be able to release the shutter when the active focus point is no longer in focus (I re-frame after focusing, the coverage of the frame points is not always enough). Yes, and it's too confusing - there are only three points on the same Panasonic, and nothing - loosened the clamp of the tripod head - brought the center. the point where he wanted - he focused (it made a sound) - framed as I need (the point is no longer in focus, but Panasonic pushes ... r on this) - clamped the tripod - took off. Why is it impossible on Nikon (I mean, almost possible, but without sound confirmation of focus). When I started using Nikon for the first time, I really got crazy from such "proprietary" troubles. Even with the D90, there are no complaints about the picture. But how to get a “PIK”?

    • US6IBD

      Tricks item 11

      • Anton

Read. It is not clear exactly where it says how to provide sound confirmation of focus, and at the same time be able to release the shutter when the active AF point is out of focus.

      • Anton

You have definitely completely read my question, what is its essence? There is a question about sound confirmation in AF-S mode with a priority of descent.

        • US6IBD

This is of course a focus priority mode!
Since not the entire frame is covered by the focus points, and in addition, not all points (even the cross-shaped ones) provide optimal focus, many photographers use the center point to focus and then re-frame. You focus on the subject you want (rock, flowers) by pressing the shutter button halfway (you get your “PIC”), and then, holding the AF-L button, frame as you like.
You may be doing everything in LiveView mode and not using the viewfinder, although I don't see any problems with working through the viewfinder when using a tripod. In LiveView mode - focusing by contrast and perhaps there is no sound confirmation (there is no device at hand - I can't check), but in this case there is also confirmation of correct focusing - visual - a change in the color of a small frame indicating the focusing point. And then - either lock the autofocus with the AF-L button, putting the device in the release priority mode, or switch the lens to manual mode on the device if the lens is AF, or on the lens if it is AF-S.

          • BB

Focus lock mode will be useful for frequent cropping.
I sometimes do this: focus, turn off the AF, re-crop, shoot.

            • Anton

Yes, I came to the conclusion that this is the only way. Focused - turned off autofocus on the lens, perframe. Otherwise - either there is no sound confirmation, or the release is blocked, or you need to hold the focus button (which is not an option on a tripod).
It's just that this feature is annoying on Nikon, despite the fact that on Canon it is done once or twice: - focused - reframed, and no shutter blocking, nothing needs to be switched.

              • Alexey

Doesn't such an algorithm work: focusing with the AF-ON button with sound confirmation to focusing, transcoding (without holding AF-L) and release?

              • Arkady Shapoval

AF-ON will not help, the descent in AF-S will be locked until the exact focus is achieved according to the camera

              • Alexey

So I did not understand the question. According to the description of Anton, it seemed to me that the task is to obtain autofocus in AF-S on some object with a sound confirmation of focus, then transcoding and descent.

              • Arkady Shapoval

When recoding, the aiming at the selected point will be lost and the descent will be blocked.

              • Alexey

On the D610 and D7100, reassigning the AE-L / AF-L button to AF-ON unblocks the focus. I apologize if I’m stupid and I’m writing not on the current issue :) I was interested in the task :)

              • Arkady Shapoval

But in the priority of focus, you still won’t take a shot, even if you press the shutter button fully, as the subject will be out of focus

              • Alexey

The descent is made without problems. Using the AE-L / AF-L button in AF-ON mode, I focus with sound confirmation (Focus priority in Priority selection for AF-S), then any re-framing and shutter release even with the lens cover closed.

              • Alexey

Keeping pressed AE-L / AF-L is not necessary, of course.

The descent is made without problems. Using the AE-L / AF-L button in AF-ON mode, I focus with sound confirmation (Focus priority in Priority selection for AF-S), then any re-framing and shutter release even with the lens cover closed.

But this doesn’t work, because only exposure lock is set on the AE-L, since the focus point does not always (or rather, almost never) coincide with the exposure metering (focus on the stone in the foreground, and exposure across the sky so as not to knock out the light , etc). Therefore, it is required to install a block on different buttons. Autofocus exposure and start.
Once again, I want to recall the Canon 7D, where you stupidly focus the AF-ON button with sound, re-frame and release the shutter. Without troubles with the settings.

In an applied sense, the task is as follows - to ensure the ability to focus on one object, measure (and fix) exposure on another object in the frame, and crop to a position that does not coincide with any of the previous positions.

And in terms of camera settings, the task is as follows - to ensure the simultaneous execution of the following points:
    1) Sound focus confirmation
    2) Separate buttons for the shutter release, autofocus, exposure lock (and in the lock mode, that is, to lock AE without holding the button).

I wrote about the D610 and D7100. I think of their relatives as well. The D300 has a separate AF-ON button and I thought there was a complete decoupling of autofocus and shutter release by default.
If, for example, the D610 assigns the AF-ON function to the AE-L / AF-L button, then, as I wrote above, the shutter release is possible separately from autofocus. Autofocus will be with sound confirmation, the exposure meter will work without blocking, i.e. will work until the descent of the illumination after transcoding.
You can assign AE-L exposure lock to a function key, such as a button for viewing depth of field.
Then you get a separate AF button, a separate shutter button (in full priority) and a separate exposure lock button.

I thought that with the D300s this can be made even simpler.

      • Alexey

        AE will be without commit.

        • Alexey

You can lock the AE lock. There is such an item in the function key menu.

And is it exactly on the D300s?

And another question on the forum - it's not clear why not all messages have a "reply" button

depends on the nesting level of comments

Yes, and of course, fulfilling all the previous points, it was possible to release the shutter when the active AF point was out of focus.

    • Alexey

Yes, it’s not a problem to take pictures during transcoding - either just hold on, do not release the AF-ON button (or the shutter button) when recoding and pressing the shutter, or you can hold nothing, but there will be no sound confirmation. But this is all from the hands. But on a tripod without sound it is inconvenient, and clamping buttons is not an option for slow shutter speeds.

      • Alexey

Not there and not that copied :) Confused in branches :)

        • Alexey

It seemed in the wrong place I wrote.

  • Alexey

hmm, sometimes I shoot with nikons, but somehow I didn't need something like that or didn't come across, but I don't remember that when re-framing I could not shoot. but there are no problems on the canons - everything works the way you think, and not as the pogromist thinks))

    • Anton

      • Alexey

apparently some kind of specificity)) if I shoot from a tripod, then in exactly two cases - when it's dark and when manual optics. in both cases I shoot only in LV.

    Good day.
In the D3100, the focusing points were visible in the video finder, it was clear where the focus was shooting, and it was convenient to “jump” from one object to another in the same position of the camera simply by lightly pressing the shutter button. Is there no such thing on the d300s or can I turn it on somewhere? It's just that a single central focus point is not always convenient to focus.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The same is in the d300s. If the point does not move, then next to the joystick move the slider to 'point', not 'L'.

Such a question: does the d300 afp support lenses? I want to pair this with the d5600, because of security, professional management and for the sake of a screwdriver. But I have a couple of af-p lenses, it will be a shame if they don't start

    • Arkady Shapoval

      do not support

  • Konstantin

Hello, I would like to know how much better or worse the D300s focuses through LV compared to the D5100 and D7000?
Now I have the D5100 in stock, but I am not satisfied with the ergonomics and the lack of a “screwdriver”.
So I'm thinking of taking D300s or D7000, sometimes I shoot from angles above my head and from the ground, where I use the LV mode, since it's more convenient.
I'm afraid to take the D7000 because of the large number of reviews about autofocus problems ..
I shoot only during the day, so you can forget about high ISOs.
There was once a D90, I liked the picture, such soft transitions in shadows and light.
With D5100, the picture is less pleasant, there is no ease in viewing, the edges hurt the eye, especially the bokeh.

    • Konstantin

Although I still think it's better to finish off the money to D7100.
But I would not want to spend too much, since the camera is not needed to make money.
But the most interesting thing is that the D7000 on the secondary side is not particularly cheaper than the D7100.
And in D5100 I really don't like the exposure meter, it always tries to either overexpose the frame or drown it in darkness.

      • Pokemon

The difference in the price of a used D7000 and D7100 is clearly visible on Avito if you are from the Russian Federation.

        • Konstantin

In the region of 20-25k for a good copy, what is the D7000, what is the D7100.
At least in the Krasnodar Territory, within my physical reach.
Ordering Avito / Yula delivery is somehow scary, there are a lot of scammers.
But there are, of course, killed D7000 carcasses for 12-15k.

  • Vladimir

There is an offer for AVITO D300s for 9t.r., (Write-new). Does it make sense today?

    • Victor

For 9 thousand or ushatannaya, or corny scammers.

If you need a strong reporter, he has.

  • Kubik

It's a pity that NEFs from the review are no longer available, there is no way to reload?

  • Vyacheslav

Tell me, now I'm shooting on d5100. The picture quality is quite satisfactory.
But somehow it is not convenient for me to control it (there is no additional LCD display). Does it make sense to change the device to the d300s? Is the matrix worse there than d5100?

    • Ivan

Personally, I think that there is no point in changing. If you need a top display, advanced functionality and easy control, then I would recommend the D7200. In general, it's time to look towards the UPC.

    • Alex

If you find one who is not killed and at a good price, then why not. We recently sold with almost zero mileage for 15, and this is a very good price. In terms of noise, it will be about the same, ISO 800 is absolutely working, but in terms of ergonomics and the number of settings it is much better. After three hundred junior cameras, you simply do not want to pick up. The d7200 recommended above is also good, but it costs much more.

    • Alexey

the three hundred has an excellent AF, sometimes it's important.

  • Kubik

And someone can share 14 bit NEFs without compression and preferably with human faces? I want to understand for myself whether I need such a device or not after the D200. Thank.
