Nikon D300s Review

Nikon D300s Review

On August 23, 2007, Nikon introduced a professional (that is how the company positioned it) cropped camera Nikon D300. At that time the camera was the dream of many photographers.

For its excellent performance and reliability, the camera was even called 'little D3' and other flattering epithets. IN Nikon D300 for the first time, among all Nikon cropped cameras, they started using RAW files with 14-bit color depth, appeared a large 3-inch display, automatic correction HA and new focusing system - Multi-CAM 3500DX... Two years later, on June 30, 2009, an updated model was presented - Nikon D300S. Models D300 and the D300S were very similar, so as not to repeat the review Nikon D300I will simply describe their differences:

Nikon D300S increased burst speed without using a battery pack. D300S can shoot at speed 7 fps, D300 could only shoot at 6 fps. Nikon D300s can accelerate and shoot at the fastest possible speed 8 fpsbut only when using JPEG format or 12-bit color depth in RAW format and only using the optional battery pack MB-D10 or network adapter EH-5a / EH-5. To make the camera shoot at a speed of 8 fps, one MB-D10 not enough. You need to use a special holder MS-D10 with 8 AA cells (batteries or rechargeable batteries). The MS-D10 holder is supplied with MB-D10. Also, 8 fps can be achieved using a more capacious battery. EN-EL4 (from cameras Nikon D2h, D2hs, D2x, D2xs) Or EN-EL4a (from cameras Nikon D3s, D3, D3x), but this requires the optional BL-3 cover (which is not included with the MB-D10). In addition, if you buy a battery EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a, you will have to additionally buy and charge Nikon MH-21 / Nikon MH-22 for it. If in MB-D10 use a regular standard battery EN-EL3e, then the burst speed will not change. Battery pack MB-D10 equally suitable for D300, D300S and D700... Personally, I don't like the fact that for these cameras you have to 'dance with a tambourine' to achieve the coveted 8 fps.

Added function 'Virtual horizon'when sighting via Live View. The same function was available for Nikon D3but was not copied to Nikon D300.

Added by movie function... True, the D300S only shoots with the maximum quality up to HD 1280X720 at 24 fps and the maximum video length is only 5 minutes. Also, the modes 640X424 and 320X216 are available at the same frame rate, while the shooting duration is increased to 20 minutes. Unlike predecessor models - Nikon D90 and D5000, the D300S has the ability to shoot movies using contrast focus. The D300S is the first Nikon CZK to have auto focus when shooting video (to focus, select Live View 'Tripod' mode and press the AF-ON button when recording video). Video recording is considered to be one of the main differences between the D300 and D300S. Also in the D300S you can find an audio input for using a stereo microphone, and speaker to output sound when watching a video. And in the menu there was a function for a very simple video editing.

Now you can shoot a video :)

At D300S removed the lock for opening the memory card compartment, which was in the D300. The memory card cover now opens just like on D700. Some buttons have changed. Appeared on the D300s 'LV' button To quickly switch to Live View mode, on the D300, this mode was selected on the control tower. Comfortable added 'Info' button, same as on D700, and with it a new interactive display (can display data on a black or white background, depending on the illumination). And most importantly, the central joystick button was made separate. On the D300, it was sometimes inconvenient to press the center button of the joystick. On the D300s, the center button is just as easy to use as on D700 и D90.

Appeared in a new camera quiet shooting mode 'Q' ('Quiet' - 'Quiet'), which is selected by the wheel on the control tower. In turn, the 'LV' mode disappeared from there, which is now activated by the 'LV' button near the joystick.

D300S now has the ability to use immediately 2 memory cards 2 different types SD (SDHC) and CF. The D300 only worked with one memory card type CF. Of course, various options for recording data on memory cards have been added.

  • It is possible to record pictures first on one card, and when it is filled - on another.
  • You can duplicate material onto two cards at once, which is sometimes an indispensable function for saving images in the event of failure of one of the cards.
  • It is possible to write RAW and JPEG files to different cards separately.
  • You can specify a card on which video files will be recorded.

Only one of the specified working methods is selected.

Added by face detection function on the footage, with the ability to instantly increase this part of the picture.

The image quality has improved slightly, but such a dramatic change as when switching from Nikon D3 on Nikon D3s Did not happen. You can see the synthetic comparison here.

You can find information that cameras use a different matrix: IMX021 at D300 and IMX038 D300s (as well as D90 and D5000). But information varies from source to source. Based on the data from the instructions for cameras, we can conclude that the Nikon D300s has the same sensor as the Nikon D300 and differs from the sensors installed in Nikon D90 and Nikon D5000 (easy to determine by the total pixels / subpixels) But all the majority of sources agree that D300s are used IMX038.

The picture in the Live View mode on the Nikon D300 slowed down noticeably (a similar problem also exists Nikon D700) On D300s in Live View, the picture is displayed normally.

Nikon D300S uses HDMI Type 'C', D300 uses Type 'A'.

The menu is a little different, in addition, Nikon D300s can edit the shot material, including RAW files.

It is very strange that the D300S not cured of a serious illness, which was available in the D300. Both cameras become very slow when shooting with 14-bit color depth, while the maximum burst speed is a measly 2.5 fps. For instance, Nikon D3 from the same era, chewed 14-bit RAW at 9 fps without any problems. Yes and D700, which was released between the D300 and D300S, coped with this task without problems at a speed of 8 fps. By the way, a disease with brakes from processing 14-bit RAW files was transmitted Nikon D7100 (cannot accelerate to 7 fps, works at 6 fps) and Nikon D5300 (It cannot accelerate to 5 fps, it works at 4 fps).

My experience

For me, the only important innovations in the D300S are: the ability to work with 2 memory cards, a slight improvement in image quality and an adequate central joystick button. It may seem strange, but just one single button makes the D300S much more convenient to use. On the D300 and D200 I was constantly nervous about this stupid button that you press while pushing the entire joystick into the camera body, but as a result, I can’t push it (instead, one of the joystick directions is pressed).

Nikon D300S is still the best crop reportage camera. No offense, but all of these Nikon D7100 и D7200 They are located in the lower class, do not accelerate to 8 frames per second, have a meager buffer, do not have such a robust housing and professional controls like the Nikon D300S.

Attention quote! This text once came to my mail. Spelling and punctuation of the original are preserved.

“Good afternoon, Arkady. I own the BEST Nikon camera ever. And you still haven't reviewed this camera. In general, I think that you only needed to review her and EVERYTHING. The rest of Nikon's cameras aren't even worthy of public attention. There is only ONE best camera, the Nikon D300s the best camera for real alpha males! 7fps, best white balance, 2 CF + SD slots, super ergonomics, shooting video clips 720p, really working ISO3200, 51 AF points scattered from edge to edge of the frame (and not shot down in the center like D700, D600, D610, D7000) 100% viewfinder coverage (versus 97% for the Nikon D700) and by the way it is VERY different for the better from the D300, these are two different cameras, heaven and earth. It is even better than the full-frame Nikon D700 which, by the way, is DISPATCH white balance, OH I put it wrong, Nikon D700 has Yellow Balance instead of White))) In general, finally make a review of the BEST Nikon camera. I wish you creative success. And a good day."

D300S officially discontinued.

'B. at.-shnuyu'. Nikon D300S sells one and a half to two times more expensive than Nikon D300. Personally, I think that when choosing between the D300 and D300S, a photographer should think 10 times whether he should pay extra for video shooting and a few more small improvements.

Good day. I have an old D 90 plus a desire to develop further in photography, please tell me if it makes sense to change it to a D300s camera?

    • Jury

depending on how many optics you have (crop). I had a D7000 and a Sigma 17-50 f2.8, I sold it (it turned out almost 40 thousand, I added a “gram”) and bought a D600 for 45 thousand rubles and 24-85 f3.5-4.5 rubles for 10 thousand. And the difference is very significant for the carcass, the glass is darker, but of high quality, sharp for 10 thousand that)

    • anonym

The matrix in the D300s is the same. The only differences are in the professional body kit (body). I changed my D90 to D610. Unfortunately, the 610 doesn't like the autofocus and viewfinder. Ideally, you should take the D800 / D800E / D810. Plus a set of fast fixes: f1.4-1.8. My most running Nikkor 85 / 1.8G.

      • Anna

FF is certainly tempting, but even for a bu, the price is quite high, usually from 20 thousand UAH. But with the replacement of sewed on soap, too, there is no desire to get involved. It seems d 300s is the last crop from prof. cameras?

        • ы

          2 Anna:
“It seems d 300s is the last crop from prof. cameras? "
There is also a brand new d500, and Canon has a 7dmk2.

        • anonym

Full frame is a higher stop in photographic quality. Higher ISO. If on the D90 I shot at ISO 640-800 and no higher. That for D610 is already the upper limit of ISO 2500-5000. Plus the picture is more pleasant. Bokeh is better. You should leave the crop whenever possible. You can also shoot in a full frame in crop mode. And the FF matrices are better!

  • Julia

Need help! I have Nikon d3200, lenses 35 mm.50mm.18-105mm and Tamron 17-50, I want to change the carcass. I choose between Nikon 300s and d7000, what do you advise. From articles on forums around the head)

  • Oleg

Faced such an unpleasant moment: on the D300s, after confirming autofocus before the shutter is released, there is a small lag, which was not in the D300 and not in the D700. I rent children in kindergartens, because of this small lag there are a lot of missed moments. Before the D300s, there were two ordinary D300s, everything was fine. The shutter itself works much softer and quieter than the D300 and D700. Even the white balance when comparing the same pictures with the D300s is 200K lower than the D300, the cooler picture, and more grain at ISO200 compared to the D300. Comparing having two cameras on hand at the same time. But the D300s has a better picture in detail. I had both the D90, the D7100, and the D7000, but these are not all reportage cameras, and with an on-camera flash are as adequate as three hundred, they cannot work. On the D7100, I generally had to turn on silent mode so that there was no grease, and according to my observations, this is not due to the large matrix, but because of the incorrect distribution of weight in the camera itself (which is not in the D7000) and pressing the shutter button itself. Now I’m faced with a choice, or find the first three hundred with a whole matrix (already a problem, even with low mileage there are hot pixels) or take the D500, though I can’t understand how it conveys skin color.

    • Michael

It dulls when 14-bit is on. Switch to 12 - the lag disappears.

  • Ruslan

Greetings! I have dreamed of this legend for a long time, I bought it from Ibei in a new state (2300 frames). Now I'm testing at home, but I haven't walked outside yet. The first impression is that it fits comfortably in the hand, well-assembled, advanced control, the photos are quite satisfied with the light fix. Let's see further). D90 will most likely sell ...

  • Valery

Good afternoon! There is an obsession with buying a new nikon d300s ... (I myself am very surprised, but we still have it on sale in one online store) At a price it is $ 100 less than the price of 7100 or $ 300 cheaper than the D7200. The most important question !!! Is it worth it? And also, since I take pictures only in Jpeg and do not process photos, what's the difference in the quality of the picture ??? I've read a lot about the pros of one or the other ... so it's not worth answering about it .. Only about the final result of the photo in JPEG. Will I notice the difference, say, after nikon d3200? And which way?

    • Michael

The difference will not be in favor of the D300 either. If the quality of the matrices in the new cameras has not improved by a single gram, then the "improvement" of processing has been striding all these 10 years by leaps and bounds. And the difference in JPEG will be very noticeable. You can compare the given JPEGs in difficult conditions - both D300 and D7100 are on the site)

      • Valery

        Thanks .. I’ll look for a comparison ..

  • Valery

I bought .. D300s it’s true that the dream of a young photographer came true. Since the price of the D7100, even in the used state, is high, I chose between D7000 and D300s for a long time. I re-read a lot of reviews and tips and the choice fell not in favor of the D7000.

    • Charles

      How was it ... a big pistol - it's reliable! :)

      • Charles

Even if it doesn’t shoot, it’s always possible to hit it on the head.

      • Valery

Really big ... after my baby D3200.

        • Charles

          Well, good frames to you!

          • Valery

Thanks! Now I’ll probably figure out his settings for a week. I hope in the picture he will please me more than 24mp nikon D3200, with its mediocre autofocus and exposure metering though a newer matrix.

            • Valentine

Will a camera with an older sensor please the picture? It is unlikely, of course, especially if she will be wearing the same 18-55 with the D3200. Well, about the fact that the D3200 does not have suitable autofocus and metering, it is not so. The module focusing and metering, which are put in a dozen different Nikon models, there are no stormy complaints and never was. So, it’s too early to be happy about the replacement, although the D300s are undeniably an interesting camera.

              • Valery

In fact, the D3200 is a good device, but due to the huge 24MP resolution of the matrix in a budget amateur camera, there are constant micro-smears and autofocus often misses the mark. The whale lens was replaced almost immediately by the nikon 35mm 1.8. Later I dug in and bought a Sigma 17-50mm f / 2.8. I also used old manual Soviet lenses Kaleinar 5H, Jupiter 11A, Jupiter 37A. Tair 11A. For convenience, I bought a couple of dandelion chips. Once again D3200 is not bad, but I would like to have a screwdriver as in the D300s, plus use manual optics without chips. The weight of the plastic D3200 is also depressing and does not dampen vibrations, unlike the D300s. And you don't want to walk with a tripod all the time. Let the picture be a little less colorful, but without shaking and in autofocus. Yes and more ... once holding the D300 without s in my hands, I really decided that I should have such a camera, the dream of many, even though it was almost 10 years ago.

              • Vitaly N

Strange, I did not notice any problems with autofocus on one point. Shavelenka yes, annoying. I'm used to making a couple of shots. At the expense of the weight - I screwed the battery pack and forgot. The weight is a little more, the grip is excellent, the little finger with the nameless one does not jump anywhere. On the belt now it does not try to turn the lens down and hit it with an edge ... A good camera, but lacks quick settings, a screwdriver and DD. I realized that it makes no sense to change for something other than FF - what you gain, what you lose.

              • Valery

Thanks to the battery pack, I won’t sell the D3200 anyway.

              • Valentine

Vitaly, about both of your lenses (nikkor dx 35mm, sigma 17-50mm), users of different cameras often write about the presence of a certain number of misses in focus. So is the case in the camera?
In general, getting a better camera or getting a better picture is not the same thing. The strong point of the D3200 / D3300 is just a fairly good matrix, proven and ample stuffing (focusing, metering modules, etc.), modern processors responsible for image processing. The fact that they are small and light, I think is only a plus.

              • Valery

Well, finally I went outside with my D300s. The first impressions are very positive. I was especially pleased with the ultra-fast autofocus. If I can’t compare with the D3200 I can’t say that the photo is better but not worse, the colors are warmer, the color is more natural like it sees the human eye, there is no oversaturation of colors as in the D3200. The truth is, so far I have only compared Jpeg, although I am also recording Raw on the second card. I download Capture and will still learn to process photos.

  • Valery

I could have bought the Nikon D7000 in a very shabby state or the D7100 would have been more money. But the choice fell on the D300s, and with the mileage it had only 14000 shutter releases and looks like new. I'll figure it out with the settings ... I'll go out to shoot I'll write I'll share my first impressions ...

  • Valery

These are the reviews that helped me determine the purchase ..
    Here is what Catherine writes:
    ""More than a year
    Advantages
oooooh, this is just a magic camera .... I switched to it from D3100. I felt the difference right away ... .. It is very comfortable in the hand !! and do not listen to those who say that girls have an uncomfortable grip, this is not true. It feels like you are holding a real device in your hand. AF tenacious, well, just sooo tenacious! It is convenient to change the settings, everything you need can be changed without going into the menu. It is very comfortable. There was a choice to take d7000 in cash, or d300s on credit, I thought for 2 months, my heart was lying to d300s and I read about the d7000's cantilever AF (and I wanted a camera with excellent AF, without jambs) and the choice fell, as you already understood, at three ... And I never regretted it !!! And I am glad to this day that I did not fall for 7000. In general, disassemble the new 300s while they are in warehouses)
    Disadvantages
here people usually write about noise in this camera… .but for darkness and rooms I have puff… ..therefore noise… ..what noise?)) I can also say about video…. I don’t use it. And, by the way, the most such counterweight in favor of the d7000 is this video ... but if you don't use it (or rarely use it), then why pay more?
    Comment
On D3100, the focus missed very, very often. Of 100 frames, about 50 will be soap, or even more. I thought it was in my crooked hands, or in the lens (I didn’t check focus for BF). BUT as soon as I put my 35 on the D300s, I saw that it was NOT in my hands, NOT in the lens, but in the D3100. There is a big difference in photos from these cameras! With a three-hundredth one I realized what “tenacious focus”, “focus accuracy” is, and not what I saw in my old photo. In general, I have one delight. ””
And since the nikon D3200 has not gone far from the D3100, so I think to get the same enthusiasm !!!!

    • Boris

The delirium of the blonde, for it is impossible to read without laughter and tears.

  • Valery

And there are many other rave reviews. For the most part, those users who were able to take pictures on both the D7000 and D300s were interested.

  • Oleg

Tell me which mode when shooting in Jpeg is preferable for a portrait? standard neutral or saturated? Or is it better to create your own mode specifically for a portrait? I have not yet figured out how to do this and whether it is possible.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Alternatively, set your own profile of pictures, for example, recommended by Nikon himself from D2x - d2x mode I.

      • Oleg

Thanks Arkady! But I didn’t understand what it was- D2x - d2x mode I. Maybe you can tell how it’s easier to adjust the mode for a portrait, I take my daughter out for walks. And since before the D300s, the camera set the Portrait mode easier. And I took pictures only in Jpeg. But since I decided to grow and bought a couple of days ago D300s.C Raw did not work at all, we still need to study.
Today I put Jpeg + Raw and I am very surprised that in Raw the photos look better.

  • Oleg

I think for the portrait to set Neutral to sharpen to 9 and put the saturation and hue to plus to the end to the right. Is this decision correct?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      This decision is incorrect.
It’s best to shoot in RAW, which you then need to “show” with Nikon ViewNX (Nikon ViewNX-I) or CaptureNX (CaptureNX-D), while necessarily choosing Picture Control (Image Control Mode) 'M1 D2Xmode1', or 'M2 D2Xmode2 ',' M3 D2Xmode3 'to your liking. These are special picture management kits that mimic the performance of Nikon D2x and D2xs cameras. Try it, the result is sometimes very, very pleasantly surprising. So, 'M1 D2Xmode1' is best for portraiture.

If you are too lazy to bother, then these same image management modes can be set right into the camera by downloading them on the official website here to register:... How to install in the camera - should be indicated in the instructions. Usually you just upload it to a USB flash drive and add it to the set through the camera menu. After that, your sets appear next to neutral and saturated.

      • Oleg

Arkady thanks for the answer. I read I will not re-read your reviews !!!

      • Oleg

Arkady, please tell me the Picture Controls D2x mode1, D2x mode 2 and D2x mode 3 modes without the letters M1, M2 and M3, is this the same thing that you advised? Is M1 M2 and M3 mandatory? Or without M 1,2,3 is it other modes that may be outdated?

        • Michael

Yes. For different cameras, different profiles are suitable. The question is just writing

        • Arkady Shapoval

          It is the same

          • Oleg

Thanks Arkady. I have already uploaded the Portrait and Landscape modes to the camera in D2X mode, the camera does not see, apparently because it is only for the D300 and not for the D300s. I still cannot find the modes you proposed ...

            • Arkady Shapoval

              You are doing something wrong.

              • Oleg

So I think what’s wrong? After all, Portrait and Landsape already flooded without problems. Still, there are assumptions since the D300s are not offered here and the software from the D300 is not suitable.

            • Michael

For s other profiles, there a new version is used. From 300 do not fit. At one time I downloaded them from somewhere.
              https://yadi.sk/d/uOpEMFBS3Yabxd

              • Oleg

Thank you. I downloaded it and still do not recognize or see.

  • Oleg

I’m starting to understand a little all three of the modes you have suggested that are inside the D2X. So far, it’s not been possible to upload it to the camera.

    • Michael

This means that the profiles are based on a non-existing profile. The camera does not see such profiles. We must look for which will fit ...

  • Oleg

Can you please tell me I haven’t figured it out yet…. On nikon D300s, when using lenses with a built-in focusing motor, do I need to turn off the screwdriver so that it doesn’t constantly turn idle? Or does the camera itself see the motor and does not turn the screwdriver lever?

    • B. R. P.

      No need to disconnect.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If you install an AF-S, AF-P or AF-I lens on a camera with a built-in focus motor, which also has a built-in focus motor, then this is not a big deal or unusual. In this case, the built-in motor of the camera simply turns off automatically, and focusing is always performed only with the lens motor. There will never be any conflicts in the work between the camera and the lens.

      • Oleg

Thanks Arkady! I expected it but wanted to hear an authoritative opinion on this matter.

  • Andrei

Hello, I'm using the Nikon D3400 for weddings, corporate parties, but you yourself understand that AF is not fast and the functionality is small, I have cropped lenses, advise whether it is worth switching to D90 or D300s?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Fast af is the lot of the lens.

      • Andrei

So far, that finances are allocated for crop, but there isn’t enough for FF, is it worth changing d3400 to d300s or d90? I’m not shooting videos, there’s puff, high-aperture lenses too.

If the d3400 suits you, you shouldn't change it. And in general, no one will ever be able to answer in general terms to this question, since it is general and sounds something like “a new amateur-level camera or an older advanced amateur-level camera?”. The answer simply doesn't exist. You can ask for certain parameters that are important to you, for example, image quality, autofocus, control, reliability, etc.

        • Andrei

Arkady, I read your feedback and hope that you can help in this situation ...

          • Andrei

Arkady, after the last shoot, I realized that you really do not grasp the field of the frame, the coverage in the frame is even 16mm (24mm on the crop), the constant settings are outside the frame, you do not have time to catch the moment, or there are blurry, argonomy, about reliability, it's exactly like now summer and departure, and the weather can not be guessed, in d90 it confuses 11 focus points, and in d300s iso, but still I hope for understanding from outside and help from experts, that's what I am addressing to you.

            • Valery A.

“There is not enough frame field” - buy a shirik like tokin 11-16, sigma 10-20mm; do not have time to catch the moment, etc. - to prof. reportage crop, like d300s, they have the same ISO with d90.

              • Arkady Shapoval

Personally, I would take the D7000 instead of the D300s. But if you want my approval, then d90 and d300s are much more pleasant to work with than d3400. According to the picture, d90 and d300s are on a par, there is a possibility - take 300s, no - d90.

            • Andrei

              Thank you

  • Andrei

Personally, I would take the D7000 instead of the D300s.
    Good day.
What can you highlight from the advantages of 7000 over 300s?

  • Andrei

Arkady, what are all the disadvantages of the D300S, in comparison with the D7000?
    Why is it the latter?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes many.
      1. The quality of the video. D7000 on the head went forward. What is worth only VS VS FULL HD
      2. The speed of work with 14 bit frames. Here, generally 2.5 fps versus 6
      3. Ravas at d7000 to reach significantly better. DD wider
      4. Unified cards. It’s easier to have 2 SD than 1 SD one CF
      5. Elementary d7000 is newer and can survive better
      6. SD card for D300s does not support UHS-I (write speed up to 25mb / s, for d7000 up to 104mb / s)

For yourself, without a claim to quality, it’s more pleasant to shoot at d300s, because it is a class higher and more ergonomic. But the d7000 is a more balanced camera for our time. The choice is always difficult, maybe you need more specific advantages of the d300s and they will outweigh the scales. I speak for the general case, balance.

  • Andrei

Achieve better photos and ease of work in professional shooting, which one will give the maximum result?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Convenience - d300s, photo quality - d7000. There is no simple answer.

  • Valery

I'll put in my five kopecks to Andrey ... I also faced the choice of D7000 or D300s. Since I held the D300 without s in my hands for a while and realized that it was just a perfectly balanced camera😀 I read a lot about the D7000 and many write that they have a problem ... from somewhere drives grease to the matrix ... Many people write that .D300S is a professional photo camera and is difficult for beginners to learn ... and I did not notice from my feelings that it was difficult to handle it ... Since before that I used aperture priority mode on the D3200 ... this mode and no problems .. Yes, there is no auto or portrait mode or something else, but I practically did not use them before. As for the video ... Well, it’s like someone ... I didn’t satisfy even on the D3200 ... and then I realized that at all an inexpensive phone, for example samsung galaxy J7, shoots videos better .... And so when I decided to change my D3200 to something more professional, I was looking for a camera and I just didn't look at the video, I would have gotten a D300 without s in good condition and with low mileage would take it ... he's in he does not shoot video in general ... Yes, there are only 12 megapixels ... but Arkady said that it is not in pixels that matter ....

  • Valery

Arkady, please tell me you write answering Andrei: Convenience - d300s, photo quality - d7000. There is no simple answer. You want to say that the photo quality on the D7000 is higher? How is this expressed? You yourself advised that you don’t chase pixels? I already got confused having a nikon D3200 amateur camera with 24 megapixels and buying a professional crop camera with 12 megapixels. Since you said that megapixels have nothing to do with it, it turns out that the image forms a matrix. And if on an amateur D7000, albeit an advanced one, the matrix is newer, then did everything have to be taken with the D7000?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, but besides the number of MPs, there is also their quality. In the general case, I have already answered above that the d7000 racks stretch better, and the d7000 matrix itself has a large margin for dynamic range and color depth, more flexible for picking. And the choice is really difficult.

      • Andrei

Hello, I took the D300S after all, yes - it's a colossus, with the D3400 like Thomson and Makarov, but I just started to master the technique technically and here's what a mess:
When viewing a photo on an LCD display, the colors are gloomy, and when viewing a photo on an IPS matrix, they are contrasting and oversaturated, as well as on phones, how to guess the color? Because I'm bothering with processing anyway (it's not so strong in it), but here there is also such a run, I tried to shoot one pair yesterday, so I was asked to show a photo - garbage kakveto, and I took pictures of others, the same thing, twisted, twisted the settings on set it differently, attached the flash, it doesn't matter! Even on the D3400, the images of the original material are visible in good color (close to a high-quality photo), maybe they flew here in the selection, tell me what to do!

        • Arkady Shapoval

Well, you were told that the d300s loses to the same d7000 in the picture, not to mention the very last of the amateur line - the d3400. With some drawbacks d300s will have to accept, with some to learn how to work. Choose the right picture management profile, tweak it, and apply ADL correctly. If shooting in RAW, then learn how to smoke it correctly, i.e. twist. Of course, after the unlimited dd at the d3400 and the infinite color depth at the d3400, the old lady d300s (and let me remind you, this is one of the first cameras on CMOS from Nikon) seems weak. Welcome to the Make Raw Candy Camp.

          • Andrei

It turns out that you could not have changed? Hmm, interestingly, the D7000 is better in the picture, but it has errors in blur on the frame and does not have such functionality, but on the D300S you need to guess, no luck, so let's twirl ... I was interested in what is better for more serious shooting, it turns out , which is better than what it was, right?

            • Arkady Shapoval

I already answered you - there is no single correct answer. It's a tough choice between the older PRO camera (d300s) and the newer advanced amateur camera (d7000). Something better there, something better there, and immediately recommended d7000 in general, painted the details here. If in general everything is bad with the d300s, take a look, maybe you accidentally use the ADOBE RGB profile instead of sRGB, many newbies are caught on this. In general, the d300s is a decent and good device even by today's standards. The profile for Lightroom for D300X Mode 300 helps me very well on d90, d2s, d1, it can also be installed in d300s immediately for JPEG. I would not say that with the d300s, frankly bad pictures are obtained, in fact, as probably with any other camera.

              • Andrei

Thank you, but how to install these profiles in the camera?

              • Arkady Shapoval

For example, download this link, and then, follow the steps from the instructions (upload the file to the card and add through the menu). If D2x won't install, try Portrait. Precisely D2XMode1 is in any native software for RAW development, such as Nikon ViewNX, CaptureNX, NX-D. If you have RAW, you can develop them right now with these profiles + - finish to taste.

Here for Nikon Capture NX-D V 1.2.1 and D90 camera is done with one click. You can download at the office. website for example here.

              • Andrei

Thank you very much - I'll try.

              • Nicholas

This profile can only be set on D300. On D300s only a portrait or landscape profile. I installed the portrait and am satisfied with the result. And the landscape gives a very bright and colorful picture. The profiles that Arkady advises can be tried in Capture ...

              • Andrei

Hello, Happy Photographer's Day, I downloaded these filters, installed them, but the difference is not noticeable at all, maybe I am doing something wrong, although everything is installed, I also noticed that the D300S with a new generation whale lens does not work so hot, is it really so much a dinosaur that doesn't want to work even with standard optics? Interesting copy, probably better to sell it? Or is it not my head, not my hands ...

              • Arkady Shapoval

Which lens works poorly and how is it expressed?

              • Andrei

I rarely use 18-55mm, it can focus, but not take a picture, the lens itself is in excellent condition, 40mm works well, and 50 1.8d too, but doesn’t want to use a whale

            • DmitryK

It was better to sell D3400, accumulate and add up to D7100 or D7200.
And this will relax for a long time.

              • Andrei

So put up for sale d3400, now I can not without a camera, I started to earn money, so that you need to have one with you. Perhaps tell me about the filters?

  • Nicholas

Arkady can tell me the answer to a very difficult question ... I have a very rare and expensive Tair 11A in our area. I value and appreciate it very much. I would leave him, but his fear of backlight is simply annoying .... Bought a hood a little longer did not help bought another screw in the first hood, it seems, I'm also now waiting for a polarik, if it doesn't get better, I'll change it to something. You Arkady wrote that Tair 11 And can show itself to its fullest only in the full frame .. apparently it is. And the question is what to exchange Tair, it is possible with a small surcharge so that that lens was at least a little like him ??? So far I am considering Tamron 90 2.8f as an option. I photograph mostly my child and my wife, that is, a portrait. Nikkor 85 18g or d is dear to me.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Here There are budget portraits. I am absolutely delighted with the Yongnuo 100/2.

      • Nicholas

        Thank you ...

  • Nicholas

Of course I would like to have nikkor 80-200f 2.8 but it is also expensive with us and you have to pay a huge tax to order from Japan and a huge tax.

  • Andrei

Is it critical if you change the shutter, or is it better not to look at this option?

    • Pokemon

Look at the general condition of the camera.
If the entire case is wiped and chipped or vice versa shines with fat and, moreover, the buttons are crushed, then this is definitely better not to take. The shutter is changed not from a good life, but from an urgent need. This means that the camera was used in the tail and mane and did not spare.

  • Igor

I don't understand at all…. How do the D7000 and D300s amateur and professional crop compare? And so it is clear that D300s outperforms D7000!

    • DmitryK

For a reporter, the D300s is more suitable, and for an advanced amateur - the D7000, which has a more advanced matrix: with a wider DD, and less noise at ISO 800-1600.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Something wins, something loses. Undoubtedly, the d300 is a class higher, but the d7000 is newer.

  • Andrei

Arkady, you also saw the Sigma lenses, please tell me at the expense of 17-70mm, is it suitable for reportage shooting? Or is it better to take 35mm? Although I have in the arsenal and 40mm, 50mm, 18-135mm.

  • Ruslan

Good day! At the beginning of the year, I bought with Ibei d300s in almost new condition, with a range of 3000 frames with a tail. Glass nikon 16-85mm 3.5-4.5 vr. I shoot in nef. I am completely satisfied with the final result of the picture after a little processing. Juicy, sharp photos, 99% of the focus wherever it is. Fotik just fire, even in modern times! Ps I am not a professional photographer, just an amateur enthusiast.
