Nikon D300s Review

Nikon D300s Review

On August 23, 2007, Nikon introduced a professional (that is how the company positioned it) cropped camera Nikon D300. At that time the camera was the dream of many photographers.

For its excellent performance and reliability, the camera was even called 'little D3' and other flattering epithets. IN Nikon D300 for the first time, among all Nikon cropped cameras, they started using RAW files with 14-bit color depth, appeared a large 3-inch display, automatic correction HA and new focusing system - Multi-CAM 3500DX... Two years later, on June 30, 2009, an updated model was presented - Nikon D300S. Models D300 and the D300S were very similar, so as not to repeat the review Nikon D300I will simply describe their differences:

Nikon D300S increased burst speed without using a battery pack. D300S can shoot at speed 7 fps, D300 could only shoot at 6 fps. Nikon D300s can accelerate and shoot at the fastest possible speed 8 fpsbut only when using JPEG format or 12-bit color depth in RAW format and only using the optional battery pack MB-D10 or network adapter EH-5a / EH-5. To make the camera shoot at a speed of 8 fps, one MB-D10 not enough. You need to use a special holder MS-D10 with 8 AA cells (batteries or rechargeable batteries). The MS-D10 holder is supplied with MB-D10. Also, 8 fps can be achieved using a more capacious battery. EN-EL4 (from cameras Nikon D2h, D2hs, D2x, D2xs) Or EN-EL4a (from cameras Nikon D3s, D3, D3x), but this requires the optional BL-3 cover (which is not included with the MB-D10). In addition, if you buy a battery EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a, you will have to additionally buy and charge Nikon MH-21 / Nikon MH-22 for it. If in MB-D10 use a regular standard battery EN-EL3e, then the burst speed will not change. Battery pack MB-D10 equally suitable for D300, D300S and D700... Personally, I don't like the fact that for these cameras you have to 'dance with a tambourine' to achieve the coveted 8 fps.

Added function 'Virtual horizon'when sighting via Live View. The same function was available for Nikon D3but was not copied to Nikon D300.

Added by movie function... True, the D300S only shoots with the maximum quality up to HD 1280X720 at 24 fps and the maximum video length is only 5 minutes. Also, the modes 640X424 and 320X216 are available at the same frame rate, while the shooting duration is increased to 20 minutes. Unlike predecessor models - Nikon D90 and D5000, the D300S has the ability to shoot movies using contrast focus. The D300S is the first Nikon CZK to have auto focus when shooting video (to focus, select Live View 'Tripod' mode and press the AF-ON button when recording video). Video recording is considered to be one of the main differences between the D300 and D300S. Also in the D300S you can find an audio input for using a stereo microphone, and speaker to output sound when watching a video. And in the menu there was a function for a very simple video editing.

Now you can shoot a video :)

At D300S removed the lock for opening the memory card compartment, which was in the D300. The memory card cover now opens just like on D700. Some buttons have changed. Appeared on the D300s 'LV' button To quickly switch to Live View mode, on the D300, this mode was selected on the control tower. Comfortable added 'Info' button, same as on D700, and with it a new interactive display (can display data on a black or white background, depending on the illumination). And most importantly, the central joystick button was made separate. On the D300, it was sometimes inconvenient to press the center button of the joystick. On the D300s, the center button is just as easy to use as on D700 и D90.

Appeared in a new camera quiet shooting mode 'Q' ('Quiet' - 'Quiet'), which is selected by the wheel on the control tower. In turn, the 'LV' mode disappeared from there, which is now activated by the 'LV' button near the joystick.

D300S now has the ability to use immediately 2 memory cards 2 different types SD (SDHC) and CF. The D300 only worked with one memory card type CF. Of course, various options for recording data on memory cards have been added.

  • It is possible to record pictures first on one card, and when it is filled - on another.
  • You can duplicate material onto two cards at once, which is sometimes an indispensable function for saving images in the event of failure of one of the cards.
  • It is possible to write RAW and JPEG files to different cards separately.
  • You can specify a card on which video files will be recorded.

Only one of the specified working methods is selected.

Added by face detection function on the footage, with the ability to instantly increase this part of the picture.

The function of determining faces. The picture is taken on the official website of Nikon.

The image quality has improved slightly, but such a dramatic change as when switching from Nikon D3 on Nikon D3s Did not happen. You can see the synthetic comparison here.

You can find information that cameras use a different matrix: IMX021 at D300 and IMX038 D300s (as well as D90 and D5000). But information varies from source to source. Based on the data from the instructions for cameras, we can conclude that the Nikon D300s has the same sensor as the Nikon D300 and differs from the sensors installed in Nikon D90 and Nikon D5000 (easy to determine by the total pixels / subpixels) But all the majority of sources agree that D300s are used IMX038.

The picture in the Live View mode on the Nikon D300 slowed down noticeably (a similar problem also exists Nikon D700) On D300s in Live View, the picture is displayed normally.

Nikon D300S uses HDMI Type 'C', D300 uses Type 'A'.

Added microphone input, as well as different HDMI ports

The menu is a little different, in addition, Nikon D300s can edit the shot material, including RAW files.

It is very strange that the D300S not cured of a serious illness, which was available in the D300. Both cameras become very slow when shooting with 14-bit color depth, while the maximum burst speed is a measly 2.5 fps. For instance, Nikon D3 from the same era, chewed 14-bit RAW at 9 fps without any problems. Yes and D700, which was released between the D300 and D300S, coped with this task without problems at a speed of 8 fps. By the way, a disease with brakes from processing 14-bit RAW files was transmitted Nikon D7100 (cannot accelerate to 7 fps, works at 6 fps) and Nikon D5300 (It cannot accelerate to 5 fps, it works at 4 fps).

Here link to the archive with the originals - 1.07 GB, 44 .NEF photos (RAW) Shot on Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (MKII),

My experience

For me, the only important innovations in the D300S are: the ability to work with 2 memory cards, a slight improvement in image quality and an adequate central joystick button. It may seem strange, but just one single button makes the D300S much more convenient to use. On the D300 and D200 I was constantly nervous about this stupid button that you press while pushing the entire joystick into the camera body, but as a result, I can’t push it (instead, one of the joystick directions is pressed).

Nikon D300S is still the best crop reportage camera. No offense, but all of these Nikon D7100 и D7200 They are located in the lower class, do not accelerate to 8 frames per second, have a meager buffer, do not have such a robust housing and professional controls like the Nikon D300S.

Attention quote! This text once came to my mail. Spelling and punctuation of the original are preserved.

“Good afternoon, Arkady. I own the BEST Nikon camera ever. And you still haven't reviewed this camera. In general, I think that you only needed to review her and EVERYTHING. The rest of Nikon's cameras aren't even worthy of public attention. There is only ONE best camera, the Nikon D300s the best camera for real alpha males! 7fps, best white balance, 2 CF + SD slots, super ergonomics, shooting video clips 720p, really working ISO3200, 51 AF points scattered from edge to edge of the frame (and not shot down in the center like D700, D600, D610, D7000) 100% viewfinder coverage (versus 97% for the Nikon D700) and by the way it is VERY different for the better from the D300, these are two different cameras, heaven and earth. It is even better than the full-frame Nikon D700 which, by the way, is DISPATCH white balance, OH I put it wrong, Nikon D700 has Yellow Balance instead of White))) In general, finally make a review of the BEST Nikon camera. I wish you creative success. And a good day."

D300S officially discontinued.

'B. at.-shnuyu'. Nikon D300S sells one and a half to two times more expensive than Nikon D300. Personally, I think that when choosing between the D300 and D300S, a photographer should think 10 times whether he should pay extra for video shooting and a few more small improvements.

Oh finally d300s, thanks for the review.

A few words about the rate of fire with a booster.
When using AA batteries, max speed is only gained on very fresh batteries. Literally 30-40 frames and rate of fire impinges on a drawdown. moreover, quickly enough as a result of stopping at normal speed. Cool energizers do not fix the situation. So for a real increase in speed it is better to use an adapter for akkamul treshki. The truth will get this a penny. Because, and the batteries are not cheap, and charging them needs a separate

Great overview, short and clear! Arkady, please correct “'little D3 ′ and other forest epithets” in forest.

On the Internet there are all sorts of stories about cameras a la d600 and d7000 with a front plastic panel. Allegedly the mount is bolted to the plastic and that's it. Arkady, did you somehow feel this fact? or maybe you know something more about the reliability of mounts d 7000 and three hundred? And yes, how does a montropic 80-200 2.8 sit on a three hundredth? nothing cracking / falling off?

    • Arkady Shapoval

On D300s, the 80-200 sits as expected. As for cameras that have a part of the body made of alloys, they are absolutely adequate and nothing breaks out there (with careful handling), sometimes the plastic can creak and 'breathe' a little when you squeeze the camera very hard.

    • Denis

Plastic does not mean fragility, sometimes metal made it easier to break than plastic. It all depends on the material and thickness. And you can break everything ...

    • Oleg

Dmitry, listen to less "knowledgeable" people. Well, I have a completely plastic D3100 wearing an unrealistically heavy Tair-33 (with an adapter about 2 kg, only glass weighs). And everything is in place, the mount does not creak or fall off. Although when changing locations I wear the whole bundle with a grip on the carcass

  • Novel

Yes already, it's a shame that NIKON did not make a full-fledged successor to the D300s. D7100 with a small buffer and pumped by megapixels does not reach the legendary D300s.

  • Share

As always, a 10+ review. And I'm really looking forward to a review about Nikon D5300 ...

  • Alex de Kairoy

    Totally agree!
button of course yes, but you get used to it over time))
over time I will change only on D3x

  • Jackie

The quote “for real alpha males” killed simply: D. By the way, an interesting "eyepiece" fixed on the display of a camera prepared for shooting, this is the first time I see it.

  • Pastor

Rumor has it that by the end of Q3, Nikon will introduce the 9300, which will be a continuation of the d300s and a cooler version of the d7100. And Canon will answer 7mark2. Rumors are not ephemeral like several years ago, but quite similar to the truth. It would be great to see professional crop receivers from both firms. Yes, and d300s with 7d after that will become much cheaper.

    • Jackie

Yes, but I'm afraid that the price of the 7100 is unlikely to fall - after all, the camera was released just a year ago, the manufacturer is unlikely to have managed to “recapture” the planned amount of money.

      • Pastor

Yes, d7100 is unlikely to get cheaper. I think at the start of sales the price for the top crop will be at the level of cheap FF (d600 and 6d), maybe 10-15 percent lower. Well, the d7100 is not quite a competitor - it has automatic modes. Yes, and strength, rate of fire, reliability in d7100 is less. I think that the buyers of the d7100 are mostly advanced people who lack the working ISO d300s. And when the model d9300 appears (well, or d400 - maybe it will be called that way), the d7100 will slowly leave the scene. Still, adding 5-10 thousand it will be possible to buy an analogue of the d300s with a cooler filling than the d7100.
I, as a fan of cheaper and older photographic equipment, am interested in this precisely because of the cheapening of previous procrops. I already see in six months d300s and 7d at a flea market for 13 thousand :))

        • Jackie

If there was such a tendency to lower prices in modern lenses :)

        • anonym

Well, 13 is still early, but 17 are already being sold)))))

  • Alex

Arkady, what a beauty in your pictures?

  • Madness scif

about the quote in the review - what's really wrong ... I am the owner of both d300 and d700 and d7000 - the d700 has more working ISO, more adequate white balance, autofocus is very fast, especially with top optics 24-70g 2,8 N, and with D -the optics autofocus is also not very far behind, the only drawback is that exposure metering works better on d7000 - the sensor is many times better

  • serghs

Arkady! I propose to add in reviews containing photo examples with models, the generally accepted gratitude: “I express my deep gratitude for shooting the Imyarek model”. It will be correct and will save you from additional questions!

  • Sergei

Thanks for the review! I myself once faced the choice of D300s or D7000, in the end the D90 won. Once again, I am convinced that they knew how to make cameras, that so people were stuck "feel like alpha males"))), I will not say that it is worse now, but somehow they do not hold out, or something, but - this is my, subjective opinion, yes and about the famous BB D700, it's some kind of riddle, for the most part on the Internet I meet information about the clumsy BB, I don't watch it, I conclude: my camera is probably not working properly or my hands are crooked, which suits the BB, and also purposefully led away in a warm shade, but how are you Arkady from BB to D700?

    • Madness scif

I almost do not pay attention to the white balance when shooting? because I shoot in RAW format, I correct it already in my native capture NX2 converter or in adobe camera raw

    • anonym

Is the BB related to the firmware version? Perhaps there were changes in later versions? Again, the growth of hands ...

  • Frank

Yak brand і microphone model on the camera?

  • Yarkiya

It seems to me that it is not entirely correct to compare the d300s and d7100. All the same, the matrices are different, the processors are also different, the video in general should not be compared. It turns out that they are unhappy with the plastic and speed and the buffer is too small. And that’s all, it seems the main difference. But my friends are picky, take a look at the amateur plastic kenon, this tears, (no offense). Now about speed, sometimes even jeepegs come out more than ten meters, and RO is generally under thirty and with such a volume of 6 frames per second, do you think this is not enough? Well, enable the crop mode 1,3x, the size of the RO files will decrease to about 16 meters and we voila, we get 7 frames per second. Now the buffer, it seems it’s not big, but look at the size of the files, of course it won’t fit in a lot, and again it’s BUT, I bought, didn’t greed, two identical high-speed Toshiba cards, and got a real reporter’s camera, IBO, a series of 7-8 frames (this is RO plus a jeep) flies from the buffer to the cards in a second and a half and is again ready for shooting. And if you set the jeep mode and crop 1,3x, then this is generally a head dump, 7 frames per second continuously until the card is completely filled, and with 32 x gigs it breaks in more than a thousand frames, and twice as many cards. I once tried a hundred shots continuously shoot, the sensations must be said pre-orgasm sorry. And mind you, no dancing with a tambourine.

    • anonym

And what for us your 1.3x with 7 frames, and so a wide angle is not enough.

      • Yarkiya

Well, if you shoot landscapes in series ... Are you afraid that the forest will run away from you? :)

      • Mihailo

..but why is there a wide cut? to shvidkodiya apparat? May D300S from 2011 and never once did not regret it, one, like a melody and a skinny one, we want to do something ... The Nikona D300S is painted like that, and the Nikora 50 f / 1.4 is more beautiful, for the available pennies, it’s hard to know. Looking at the “carcasses” of the Nikon d2, D700 and D3s BU options, the matrix is not cropped, taking the D2 bi, and I still want D3s, a little toad to press for a penny ... Significantly, D300S and D7000s vibrate, I said, “will come to replace a new day ”. Twisting 7100 and 300 in my hands, I saw IMHO in the case of the D18S, if the trims in one ruts were 55-10 and in the other well, do not worry Mir-37A, or Jupiter-300A (more important sloppy and metal), but here it is not important for me There are a number of pixels in the hands of losing the richness, as a victorious feeling of hope and perhaps three conservatism. P. Arkadiy, who is suspiciously aware of the statty, without adding about the number of sprays to the shutter, magniviy “shkelet” and a lot of pilot power, the protection of the D36S, etc., and so on. kulemet, іznitsі on shvidkodії in 1-2 frames is practically not visible IMHO. Apparatus of grants by 110%

        • Arkady Shapoval

This review is more about a comparison of d300s & d300, the rest is described in the d300 review (there is no point in rewriting 90% of the material). And in fact, d300s is no longer produced, it is difficult to find it even on sale.

          • Mihailo

it’s completely not a sense, but a wholly new one, a decile on the phone and on the Amazon and on the other hand came across, and not new, but new !? enter vipuskayut, whose surplus in warehouses?
Once again, a grace for your stats and your submissions is glorious, I am browning with Nikor’s 180th pre-ai-f / 2,8 and Jupiter -37a (I like it better) having put on them Dandelion Lushnikov.

            • Arkady Shapoval

Perhaps there are simply reserves left, for example - try to find a new d300s in our open spaces. The official information about the discontinuation can be found on the net, otherwise I would not emphasize this in the review.

    • anonym

And why the hell to stick a 24 megapixel matrix into the camera and suffer then? where is the logic? the pixel size is even less than d 800 on which everyone was splashed. Have you really used these 24 MP at least once? only without these “you can cut off” but really. And the matrix comes out - and now give it the resolving optics, the shutter speed is shorter and the memory card is faster. Do not forget to stick the processor as soon as possible - that's the money and only the plastic case remains. And in three hundred, except for the noise on the iso above 800 and there are no problems

I don’t understand your annoyance, do you dislike the camera or what I wrote? I won’t argue with you, just I don’t think that you will attach a crappy lens to your camera and begin to calm yourself. Like, I don’t have a lot of pixels, I’ll get such a glass.
A memory card, today in my opinion this is not a subject of the dreams of a technological geek, but a rather ordinary thing, and probably everyone knows that the faster it is, the funnier.
24 m pixels goes well on microstock, for me it’s just what I need, but for the soul I dabble in macro and believe me the picture is still different from my last 16 megapixels.

There is a merchant for every product. The people are not against multipixel - the people are against uncontested imposition and hidden coercion.

        • Alexander

“I don’t understand your irritation” - don’t pay attention. In the course of the Kenonists, you touched about cheap plastic :)) So they need to somehow assert themselves and justify their investments;)
Guys, what kind of plastic are we talking about in D7100 ??? The D7100 is mainly magnesium alloy. What are you talking about? It is clear that it is difficult to realize that your camera has become obsolete over time (especially when it was in the top at one time), but guys, do not deceive yourself. Anyway, the D7100 is Nikon's best crop to date.

          • Elena

@ Say what you like, the D7100 is Nikon's best crop to date. @

    • Sergei

      I will probably support it.
I recently switched to 7100 and do not understand the essence of the claims. Speed difference 1 frame per second? Maybe it's important for someone. She has excellent plastic. The assembly is declared with improved dust and moisture protection. The difference from the 300s is 4 years! By the standards of Japanese electronics manufacturers, this is an eternity. It is clear that if there is already this XNUMXth, then it may not be necessary to change it. But if you choose what to buy from scratch, there is nothing to think about. (And yes, IMHO and every sandpiper ...)

The only drawback of the d7100 is the buffer, which is sometimes really lacking. Possibly lower wear resistance (in comparison with d300s). But again, it is “possible” because did not see any reports of this kind of damage to the first. Otherwise, 7100 clearly wins (not to be an alpha male to me :().

    • Felix

My junk in the form of d200 in rav and jpeg mode (rav without jpeg compression to max) in a series scraps 25 frames, the size of one frame is equal and jpeg 20-21mb, in jpeg mode there is no buffer at all, clicks until the map is full. The camera is 9 years old, and you are processors, processors ... d7100 is a good amateur device with an out-of-the-box iso robot for crop and no more.

Hello everyone, I, as a budding photographer, have a question for experts, they very often focus on rate of fire and this article also did not work, the question is how often in real life does such rate of fire need?

    • AM

Do not bother with the rate of fire. I would advise you to focus on the following list of priorities:

      1. The availability and price of accessories for the system as a whole;
      2. The most effective ISO camera;
      3. Ergonomics of the camera (personal convenience);
      4. The presence of features, including rate of fire based on the tasks being solved.

To a greater extent, this applies if you take the technique specifically for the photo - for the video there are slightly different priorities. This is exclusively my personal opinion, not the law and not the ultimate truth.

    • anonym

the lover is not needed. Well, at least it never came in handy for me. Reporters need it (we are discussing the repertory camera). And in general, for any action you need to choose a good shot from the series. Like shooting sports, dancing, at a wedding, you can shoot some competition and choose a photo with not the most ridiculous expression on your face. Once I only felt offended for my d1 at a dance competition at our institute - couples flew past me in a dance and there were a couple of seconds for a picture. Reporters from the newspapers were beating in series and I managed 3100-2 pieces in total. As a result, during the analysis of the material, it turned out that in half of the pictures it was either a lady with her back or a gentleman, and it was rarely possible to shoot a couple in profile. This is where a series would help. And so for a vacation and pictures in the style of "me and a palm tree", "see what kind of kitchen in the hotel" and "we drink with friends" nafig is not needed

    • Pastor

As previous commentators have rightly pointed out, shooting speed is rarely needed. Earlier, I decided for myself that the rate of fire is useless, that a good picture should be verified, and not clicked at random. But unfortunately, more and more events happened that were difficult to shoot at a speed of 2-3 frames per second. For example, at the presentation of the certificates, in a dark room, my goal was to photograph everyone who was awarded the certificates, but due to the low rate of fire, some recipients of the certificates came out either blurred, or with their eyes closed, or with their backs turned to the camera. Out of 15 people, only 3-4 turned out normally. Of course, if my hands were straighter, I would not allow this, but sometimes (just sometimes) the quality of the technique can compensate for the crooked hands. So, when I filmed the fights of fighters of reenactors on swords (the so-called buhurt - 100 per 100 fighters), the speed of more than 6 frames per second on the canon 50d helped me a lot. There were a lot of battles and I could appreciate the benefits of the speed of the camera. I shot some of the fights on slower cameras, and some on this one. And then, analyzing the frames, I was able to select a lot more worthy frames from the high-speed camera. But, if your goal is family photography, sightseeing, non-professional studio photography, macro or portraits, then even one frame per second will be enough. For example, for many tasks I use old Canon 400d and Nikon D80 cameras, which do not even produce 3 frames per second. So in real life, a rate of fire of more than 2-3 frames per second is needed in 0,1% of cases, and even then it is successfully replaced with straight arms. After all, they somehow managed to capture unique moments even on film cameras, which had a much smaller frame reserve and shooting speed.

    • Dim

The rate of fire is absolutely unnecessary if you are not a pro and your family has no children or you tend to screw them to the floor :)))) In reality, a real master will simply take a sheet of paper, paint and draw everything as it should. And I am forced to unprofessionally beat from D 200 ...

  • Igor

I wanted to purchase a d300s or d7000 camera. By coincidence, I bought a used D7000. At first, the work of autofocus was so disappointing that I regretted that I did not buy d300s.

    • Alexander

It still depends a lot on the lens.

      • Igor

Let's just say that on the same lenses and under the same conditions, the focus worked less accurately and stably than on the d3100.

        • Pastor

In the d7000 reviews, focusing errors are common. In general, with the focus of the d7000, everything is on the verge of a factory marriage. Of course, you can shoot, not that the focus does not work at all, but, as you yourself have seen, even a simple d3100 focuses better (she would also have a screwdriver). In turn, the d300 is just very famous for its focusing - both speed, tenacity, and accuracy are always pleasing. It's still a professional camera. In d7100, mistakes of the past were corrected and focusing there became very, very good.

"Nikon D300s has a function of cleaning the sensor using the vibration of the AA filter"
The d300 also has a matrix cleaning function

I have been using it for 3 years !!! I would like to add a very tenacious autofocus, in a series of shots it keeps the exposure, works with a "bunch of manuals", and the image is much better than seven-thousanders. Oak duralumin construction - dropped a couple of times with a lens from 1,5 meters - NOTHING Works great.

Take care of your cameras, do not drop them. No matter what they are made of. Probably many people saw on YouTube how a funny Chinese boy tied cameras to his legs and walks on them, douses them with hot tea, throws them from a height, hammer nails with a lens, generally wants to show that cameras have a margin of safety because these unfortunate cameras continue to shoot and everyone rejoices, oh, what durable devices, and what good fellows are these canons and nikons.
And my 5100 fell from a height of 60 cm, a coffee table, and not on stones, but on a laminate with a soft backing. Of course, everything continued to work like a tractor, but how, the focus went astray, and the metering died, it seems to focus and take off, and the soap and overexposure appear at the output. He took it to the official, and in a couple of weeks they managed 150 green rubles. The exposure meter returned, and the focus, alas, the portrait and landscape was even more or less, and he put on a macro, filmed a session with insects and immediately it became clear that Fedot was not the same. He took it back with claims, they say they raise their hands on the equipment that they have, this is the maximum that can be achieved.
In the end, they managed to sell the camera (to a young boy who “yes, I take it for my chicks, let the sheep learn”), so my conscience almost did not torment me.
But I don’t take a new camera in my hands without first putting the strap around my neck.
In general, take care of the camera! Do not look that it is made of iron in whole or in part, the filling is still tender.

      • Michael

Do not drop if it works! But comparing the stuffing (at least the shutters) and the case of the 5100 and 300s is ridiculous. Starter camera and professional.

        • Alexander

The person as a whole gives advice. Regardless of the model of the device, in my bitter experience. Nobody compares anything.

      • Alexander P

The real situation - my D7100 fell from a height of about one and a half meters onto a wooden floor. The plastic mount on the 18-105 lens has broken. I immediately gave it to the diagnosis - everything turned out to be ok, everything works, thank God! After that I started to respect this camera even more.

        • newreportage.ru

My D7000 fell onto concrete from a height of 50-60 cm. I got off with only a scratch on the metal. It’s good that I didn’t fall on the lens.
By the way, with regard to moisture protection, this very D7000 I heroically withstood reporting photography in the pouring rain for an hour and even up to 3 hours in alternating shallow and medium rain. Rubbed in a cafe with a cloth and that's it. Therefore, it is real for the cameras of this line (D7000, D7100, D600, D610 and older, including D300 / D300s) there are no problems with moisture at all. The main thing is that the lens does not fail and does not pump moisture inward. And so, even rinse under the tap, I'm not joking!

Thanks to Arkady for the review. Well, personally, I want to add: I have been using the d300s since the beginning of 2011, the camera did not fail in the cold (Yakutia, Magadan), and in the heat (Southeast Asia) and in conditions of high humidity (Kamchatka). recently became the owner of the d700, according to the results of the first filming, the dd of seven hundred, in my opinion, is better than the d300s. d300s left as a second camera. I recommend it to everyone, while they can still be purchased on the market / well, or on a secondary one at a reasonable price. regarding the comparison of some commentators with d3100, d7000, d7100 - in my opinion, d300s has all the functions necessary for shooting displayed on the carcass, while in new cameras you need to go to the menu, then to the submenu ... something like that. unless, of course, someone participating in the correspondence here prints banners of 2x3 meters or more, maybe multi-megapixel of modern cameras is really needed, but turning to the archive of Arkady's articles, draw a conclusion for yourself: why do I need 20 xx MP and more ??? all good pictures!))

  • Nikolai (sn797)

Once upon a time, faced the agonizing choice of the Canon D 300 or 40D. The latter was really cheaper and the cost determined the choice. Many years have passed, I have become an “avid gunner” :) and at the moment, with great pleasure I use the 7D, but the D 300 still has some extraordinary feeling of indifference and respect.
    PS
Alpha male :) in his letter is largely right, Rei, because it was not for nothing that she smiled :)
Thanks for the great review! I read it with interest and nostalgic feelings :) Who knows what happened to me now, if I bought D 300 then ...

Arkady thanks for the review. I am happy using the D610, I wanted to find out from you what kind of battery pen you recommend, I would definitely like to know the company. Naturally, my dear hmm is a little expensive, but what about various Chinese, what can you advise?

    • Vladimir

By the way, about the battery handles =) I got a non-original one, with a remote control, with a timer and a good bucks for 40 bucks. In general, everything works as it should and the IR remote control and the shutter button on the unit, all timers. It can work both from a pile of finger batteries and can accommodate additional battery, minus only one, there are unauthorized photographs, that is, contacts somehow close by themselves and a picture is taken. Rarely, but occasionally happens.

The attitude of the majority to plastic products is curious. No, I also respect metals, but good plastic is actually an achievement of civilization. Starting with a lower thermal conductivity - for example, it cools your hands less and more slowly passes winter “coolness” into the filling and ends with tactile sensations, weight and almost no less strength than many metals. And for fans of blued steel, there are all sorts of "magnums-45" and so on. I would also like to support the defenders of my D7100 (completely without touching also good older products) - and remind you that such companies as Nikon do not knit brooms at all, and if they do, then it is a branded

    • Maksim

      .
At my bagatokh my know-it-all metal associates for the chimos of the obs ”we speak the language of the bazhanim. And plastic / plastic tse association ... well, I don’t know how to do it, because of the bag handle. And those who have the same phone with plastic often write more beautifully than metal, less temperature (as they wrote), lighter details are taken together, but I think and analyze. I think we have lost it from the era of the USSR, as a TV viewer is a box made of wood (chipboard is two cm), but it’s impossible to go, if the machine is all about metal, the trumpets are chavun (stainless steel! -Squeak of fashion :-)), yaki schob is easier to read .. well, we understand, and such attachments are without any problems. Plastics, alloys, carbon? - no, have not heard!

      • sergey

I want to add that carbon fiber (carbon fiber) do a lot of things, but I'm talking about bicycles, and so they are several times more expensive than metal ones.

        • Maksim

So, dear, significantly dear, well, ale, you need to dearly, scho carbon for Denmark, and then take a turn! At one time, I was amazed at the carbon bike and the baby carriage, the carriage two and a half times the weight for a tege; a good metal analogue (ale and two times more expensive), a bicycle. But for all the product there is a good material, friends have a compartment of 3100 and 5100, they have problems with the case, the D90 itself already has an alloy, there’s an important camera, I’m sitting in the main room, 7100 is a magnified case, I’ve got the plug in me. Ale there are a lot of special problems with materials, for example, older models have better showcases, which in all has its own price. The Japanese are not invisible, know what to do with your food :-)
P.S. I have to navigate the Bosch punch with the right amount of plastic, let’s call it a gasket, thinking about a one-time hitch, and even more than 8, I have to. XNUMX)))

          • anonym

Do not forget about those expansion processes at different temperatures, for the same focus sensors this is very critical.

    • Denis

The metal is good until the first serious hike, when in the heat with a bunch of things to drag the cast-iron camera completely sunk, and you start thinking almost about soap dishes ...

      • Vladimir

I agree, although the Slingshot 210 backpack helps me out always and everywhere, at least on foot, at least on a bicycle. A camera with a lens, a flash and an additional lens with a bottle of water fit nicely

  • Yarkiya

Maxim, sorry, I don’t speak Ukrainian, I don’t live in Ukraine, not even in Russia at all. In general, at least, I would like to understand what you are writing. :)))

    • Dmitry K

yeah. It can be seen that the person is trying, and what exactly is a mystery))))

    • Jury

      https://translate.google.com/
I tried to translate Maxim's post - everything was translated well, if I translated myself - I would put one word in another, but the meaning, after translation into https://translate.google.com, will become clear even to those who do not speak Ukrainian absolutely :)

      • Arkady Shapoval

:) According to statistics, there are quite a lot of visits from translate.google.com on Radozhiva, especially from Poland and (suddenly!) Germany :)

      • Maksim

Damn, well, you guys give, don't know Ukrainian :-), I'm trying here, trying ... I didn't know that you are not local people))) The fact that the site is “multilingual” and let's say transnational pleases of course, but not always clear where is the person from and which one to knock on. And although I have two and a half native languages (Ukrainian, Russian and English), I still prefer to write in Ukrainian. Arkady, can you create an opportunity to put country flags next to your nickname? So that we can see how the whole planet is drawing information about photography on Radozhiv's favorite website (partly a question as a joke)?

        • Arkady Shapoval

I’ll think :) for the sake of joking, I’ll also add that there are many calls from Israel :)

        • Vic

Maxim Bravo! I’m from Israel, ale Ukrainian rosum (choose the decal of letters not on the keyboard)) Many thanks to Arkady from the international community!))

          • Vic

It's funny when I wrote your comment, Arkady was not there yet - hit the topic))

            • Arkady Shapoval

:), yes, it turned out very funny)

      • anonym

In my opinion, according to the rules of decency, within the framework of one group you need to communicate in some one language. And it turns out strange: the article is in Russian, the comment is also, the answer is already in Ukrainian, the answer to the answer is again in Russian. In addition to the fact that the thread of the narrative is lost, it seems that people fundamentally do not want to write in Russian. And there are so many stories about how “we don’t understand Russian”, but how you switch to English, you’ll immediately “hauduyu” ...

  • Yarkiya

And I am a Siberian from Israel, and although Israel is almost the second Ukraine, unfortunately I don’t get too busy))).
