Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro review

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro review

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro is an old SLR camera with Nikon F mount and an unusual sensor with a non-standard pixel arrangement. The sensor has only 6.17 MP, but the camera, due to their unusual location, interpolates them up to 12.1 MP, creating images with a maximum size of 4256 X 2848 (for example Nikon D300s creates snapshots with a maximum size of 4288 by 2848 pixels).

In total, Fujifilm released 4 digital SLR cameras:

  1. Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro - January 2000, based on Nikon F60 (aka Nikon N60) ISO 320-1600 range, 3.07 MP SuperCCD (creates 6 MP images).
  2. Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro - January 2002, based on Nikon F80 (aka Nikon N80), based on this base and Nikon D100. Range ISO 100-1600, 6 MP Fujifilm SuperCCD III (third-generation matrix), creates pictures at 12 MP.
  3. Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro - February 2004, based on Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro, has a SuperCCD SR II matrix, 6.17 MP S-pixel + 6.17 MP R-pixel (creates images at 12 MP). There was also a modification - Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro UVIR for shooting in infrared and ultraviolet spectra.
  4. And there is no fourth model, because they don’t like the number 4 in the east. Truth, Nikon D4 and Canon EOS-1 D Mark IV do not care about prejudice :)
  5. Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro - presented in September 2006, built on the basis of Nikon D200. ISO range 100-3200, the matrix is almost the same as in  S3 Pro - SuperCCD SR II with 6.17 MP S-pixel and 6.17 MP R-pixel (captures images at 12 MP). There was also a modification - Fujifilm FinePix IS Pro for shooting in infrared and ultraviolet spectra.
Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro

I want to note right away that cameras Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro and Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro have a completely different matrix construction principle than Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro и Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, because of the first two models you should not expect a fabulous result that is inherent in the legendary models S3 Pro и S5 Pro. Camera arrays S1 Pro and S2 Pro have just an unusual arrangement of pixels, similar to the structure of bee honeycombs, and S3 Proo and S5 ProIn addition, they use two types of photodiodes, which allows them to get a large dynamic range and a certain gain at high ISO.

However, if the S2 Pro guesses correctly white balance, it turns out a pretty nice picture, in some ways really resembling film photos. TO white balance you’ll have to get used to it, sometimes it often drives the picture into an eerie green hue, although this effect can be passed off as an artistic idea.

The top of the camera is practically no different from Nikon D100, because they are both made on the basis of the same building. I believe that in D100 The most awkward controls of any Nikon camera, the same goes for the S2 Pro. For example, ISO is changed using the main command dial - you need to rotate it to the ISO mark, set the desired value on the screen by rotating the wheel under your right thumb, and be sure to return the dial to one of the modes MORE Potherwise the camera will not shoot. This is damn inconvenient. For ISO, only 100, 160, 200, 400, 800, 1600 can be selected.

Custom functions are set in exactly the same way using the CSM label. Shooting modes (standard, burst, timer, multiple exposure) are selected using the switch, which is blocked by a special button.

The camera menu is very short, with a small set of additional functions, while it does not support the Russian language.

The camera has two monochrome displays, which allow quick access to some basic functions. Dealing with the buttons that are near the monochrome display on the side of the main display is very simple. The color display is small, only 1.8 inches diagonally, at 117.000 dots, more suitable for setting up the menu and for checking bar chartsrather than viewing captured photos.

The camera uses two slots for two different memory cards - SmartMedia (up to 128 MB) and CF. It's a pity, but S2 Pro only supports memory cards CF In the first versions, up to 2 GB, the camera does not even see my 4 GB card. It’s also bad that the pictures themselves are written to the memory card very slowly (this does not depend on the speed of the card itself).

The S2 Pro can shoot at a maximum speed of 2 frames per second, with 7 frames in RAF and 8 frames in TIFF or JPEG F (maximum quality) buffered. After shooting a series of frames in TiFF or RAF format, the camera can go into a stupor for a few minutes. RAF files weigh 13 MB, TIFF files 36 MB each. I was a little upset that the camera could not shoot in RAW + JPEG mode.

The camera body is unusual, it is much larger than modern SLR cameras (which by default do not have a built-in battery handle). The camera looks very plump, everything else, S2 Pro has as many as two power sockets and runs on 4 batteries or AA-size batteries, two more CR123A batteries are used to operate the built-in flash, and the camera can also be powered from the C-5VH (S) AC adapter using the DC IN connector.

The camera has a USB 1.1 port (which is very slow), IEEE 1394, video out, and a PC sync connector. And also, you can record a voice tag for each captured image (up to 30 seconds long, the recording file weighs up to 300 kb, 8 khz, 64 kps, '.WAV' format).

S2 Pro uses a large full-length mirror, which he inherited from Nikon F80 (N80), other cameras use a smaller mirror (due to the reduced sensor format APS-C). I was surprised and pleased that the camera is very quiet and pleasantly clicks the shutter. Unfortunately, like Nikon D100, S2 Pro is cut in work with manual optics, as well as in short shutter speed - can only shoot up to 1/4000 sec. As with Nikon D100S2 Pro uses a focus system Multi-cam 900 5 focus points and 10-segment SPD sensor for measuring exposure.

Here link to the archive with the originals - 744 MB, 59 photos in .RAF format (RAW) Shot on Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (MKII), Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D и Helios-44 2/58.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

My experience

After Fujifilm FinePix S5 ProThe S2 Pro is already completely different. The camera is slow, inconvenient to operate, does not have my favorite function auto-iso... The native RAW processing program (Fuji Hyper-Utility) is very slow and on my Win 7, it crashes constantly. It is also strange and inconvenient that the level exposure can only be changed in half-stops, and excerpt synchronization is only 1/125 s.

But still, I want to note that on the S2 Pro you can get a nice picture, especially with a good lens :). I think that in our time it is better to take for the same money Nikon D80 and enjoy a lot of useful functions (FP mode, remote control of other flashes, normal display and control, honest 10 MP, memory cards up to 32 GB with an infinite series in JPEG mode, etc.). By the way, the Internet is full of rumors that for many S2 Pro models the matrix is out of order.

Since you got to my S2 Pro review page, I advise you to look at the 'Legends go to battle'.

Results

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro is a funny representative of the era of the first CZK. It attracts attention with the presence of an unusual sensor that can create an interesting picture. Nowadays S2 Pro is outdated.

Interestingly, the county in colors is the same as their entry-level film. Only recently, the roll was taken from the press, the same green stuff climbs with might and main

  • Vladimir

And in my inexperienced look, only in the photo with birch stones there is some strange shade, something like a bolt. At this time of the year, usually the leaves are still green.

    • anonym

uh, only on one photo do you think? Yes, almost all the pictures go green, at least take a look at the boy’s photo, Skinton has gone green

  • xytop

Key phrase of the excursion during the time of the chambers of the Paleozoic era:
... on S2 Pro you can get a nice picture, especially with a good lens :)
Only the third element is missing - the photographer. Although, maybe he disguised himself as a smile))
And the colors ... No wonder they say - the taste and color ... But hardly anyone would argue - the picture something cool. And each of the three components vyshekpomyanutyh has contributed.

  • Mikita

Easy adjustment and a very juicy palette. Good sharpness.

  • Mikita

Even just one click in the Captcha NX-2 “Auto Levels” can be given to the client.

  • Victor

And the pictures are really, really nothing :)
    I wanted such a lens ...
    Arkady, thanks for the review.

  • Mikita

Merits of color - more from the matrix than from the lens. Quite the contrary - evil once gamma, is by the enlightenment of the method is quite an old legendary lens and the lack of opportunities to reconcile its process in the chamber.

  • Sandy

Wow, on the 6th photo from the end (purple flower) there are even horizontal stripes imitating scratches after the film was pulled, there is definitely no Film mode in this camera :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

These are visible signal readout paths. On most CCDs, if you pull the underexposed frame hard, they appear)

      • Denis

Yes, yes, when I pull frames with Nikon D1X, the bands also come out :)

      • Amatich

Nostalgia blah ... Arkady, I respect your work in your difficult time.

Took a couple of years ago I thought to change the nikon D50 to it. But the slowness of writing to the card completely killed the interest in it. Also, my copy a bit on lenses gave back focus. Bribed the appearance of the camera (a taut grip like that of a pro) and F is afraid. It also seemed that the battery consumes a lot. For example, I recently recently bought a D50 for myself for time laps, so she took 1000 frames and, well, one division did not drop! True, the camera was connected to the computer via a USB cable, but it did not charge from it, it only took off the pictures. In general, having the D600 / D7000 in my arsenal, I very often use the D50, which is a very successful camera; only the screen leaves much to be desired.

  • Dmitriy

I would like to see the photo at high ISO. It is a pity that they are not in this review ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

The only pity is that someone is inattentive :)

Thank you Arkady for a nice review. In fact, the description of the Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro camera completely coincides in the capabilities and functions of the Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro, except for the matrix. The body and layout of the buttons are similar, except for some details. Even the battery installation and the inputs are the same.
Your review was very helpful in choosing the camera Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro, section "Legends go into battle." Wanted to buy Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, but could not (finances are not allowed). I don't regret it at all. The only drawback is a very ... voracious battery. New batteries are enough to shoot 40-50 frames, not including the flash. I put charged batteries, and remove even less. voltage of 1,3 volts on them. Former owner says that carried a large battery of 5 volts.
Still, the picture was worth it. There is a shot film mode F1 and F2. The quality of the jackets, no need to adjust - juicy and bright colors. Of course, I have not yet fully figured out the capabilities of the camera, myself an amateur. And there is not always a lot of time. I just love to shoot. I apologize to everyone for distracting off the topic of the review. And about the matrix, you Arkady wrote everything correctly, wonderful. And I am very grateful to you for the reviews, for your work - many thanks !!!

    • Mr.G

Well, I do not agree at all, 2700 AKs are enough for me for a very long time, apparently something is wrong in your camera :(, the camera itself is very reliable and energy-efficient, I have been using it since 2006 and have 5DM2, then 1DS and now 6d, all the same, it’s mandatory to bring along Fuji S3 pro. Subjective, of course, I don’t have a better picture, by critical parameters for me. S2 drove a week, like in Arkady’s photo, it often flies green-blue, which cannot be in S3 and S5 in principle. In general, Fujah devices (old) are something!, it’s a pity that they are no longer produced Arkady, thank you very much for your work !!

  • Alexander

A little of my feelings. First, thanks for reviewing S2Pro! After talking with her, I can dispel 1 myth. You write: “It's a pity, but S2 Pro only supports CF memory cards of the first versions, up to 2 GB, even my 4 GB card cannot be seen by the camera.” He sees! He also sees 8G !!! The main thing is to format the card from FAT32 to FAT (FAT16) on your computer. You have to understand that the old man also needs the old FAT format. As for the matrices, they are still the same in design starting from S1 (S and R diodes). Just more megapixels. And if you put a good lens, then the S1 will show class.

    • Arkady Shapoval

no, the matrix construction is different for s1, s2 and s3, s5.

  • Sergei

Maybe it goes into blue-green, but I appreciate the color rendition and skin tone, there is neither dullness nor brownishness compared to the modern cropped Canononi and Nikon,

  • Alexander

Arkady, please correct, you wrote - “…. S2 Pro has as many as two sockets for batteries and can be operated from 4 batteries or AA size rechargeable batteries, or from 2 CR123A batteries…. " In fact, the camera does not work on only CR123A cells, it turns on, but does not work, it will give Err :) These batteries are only for the built-in flash and without them the flash does not work. And sometimes, on some versions of this device, without CR123A batteries, the camera after the first frame can beep and blink, notifying about a discharged battery, and then take a frame again, and so on until the AA batteries (or batteries) actually run out :)

    • Alexander

Thank you very much for the review!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      fixed.

I recently purchased this camera. The pictures are certainly fascinating). I solved the problem with memory cards a little differently. I didn't find CF cards for 2gb ... I bought a CF-SD adapter (600r). I had an SD card. True to 16gb. Then I downloaded the program “MiniTool PWTE v7.5 Final + Portable Rus”. (It's free). This program can split the disk into sectors. It is necessary to format the card in FAT format 16 (FAT32 camera certainly does not see). In this format, it is unfortunately possible to format only 4 gb memory. Accordingly, from 16gb it will be possible to use only 4gb. Although this is enough for me. The main advantage is that you can use one (or several) SD cards in different devices without purchasing additional CF cards. This is not the only utility. As far as I know, there are still analogues.
And so, the camera is very happy. True BATTERY eats fast ...

  • Diamond

I once had this) I solved the power problem with Eneloop batteries and installing after a small cut of the battery block from f80 (there is an instruction on the Internet), which resulted in 8xAA heavy, but I did not need these nasty cr123.
    It looks like this:
    http://cs616124.vk.me/v616124138/1df30/aoVMJsyeOVY.jpg
    http://cs616124.vk.me/v616124138/1df39/UWf7sXQSZG4.jpg

  • Diamond

And also I wrote on the Xd card from Olympus faster than on CF)

    • Artem

Just such a block (MD-16, from F-80) is now at hand ... If it's not difficult, throw links, how can you cut it? Interesting to see)

  • Philip

As the owner of this camera in the review, I noticed one caveat - when the cr123 and ordinary batteries are inserted, the camera refuses to turn on. When I pull out 123, the camera turns on normally ... what's the weirdness? Maybe 123 is the case? Spoiled?
And yet, yes, it sits the batteries very noticeably! I put Wartu at 2400 mAh, up to a hundred shots and that's it!

  • Artem

Most likely with the batteries ... There was the same situation, I put in the "kodak-ultra" batteries, the norms began to turn on. In the battery compartment under 123, there are "probes" - which determine the presence of batteries. If they are not working, then the camera will not turn on even if there are fingertips.

why did they delete the post about Donbass children, I wanted to answer it, but no longer (post)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Offtop. Not on this site.

  • Mikhalych

This is what. I've been on the site roma.ua (this auction, flea market) saw a lot but did not buy the "Journal-book Oh photos- production 1941-1942-1943 Germany's" date can not remember exactly where she is depicted smiling. And on the site ransacked but the lot is not found. If someone knows, please specify what it was the year 1941, if it is clear, then not everything was clear, and if the 1943 - it is interesting.

  • Mikhalych

    oh, romo.ua

  • LDS

Yes, the green hue is quite obvious, but I guess if you want it can be easily corrected using proprietary tools for handling RAW-files. In my subjective opinion, the picture is not worse than with the S5 Pro, and in terms of sharpness, perhaps, even better. But the S2 Pro sensor itself, apparently, is not of high quality. Somehow I managed to get a few test shots with the camera. Tests showed that at ISO 800 at 1/6 second shutter speed, the sensor showed over 100 hot and cold pixels. Even visually, instead of a dark screen, a “starry sky” was visible. Another S2 Pro I tested had about the same picture. For Troika, these values are an order of magnitude lower, although the tested cameras were approximately the same in age (12-14 years old). Once the sake of interest, I would like to purchase S2 Pro, but now, I think, not worth it. But for a photographer who takes pictures of plants professionally, the camera will be just right. In terms of price - quality ratio S2 Pro for this type of photography is beyond competition.

  • Artem

Of course, the color in these photos is complete shit. Just bastard greenery. S2 doesn't shoot like that. She certainly has moments when the camera turns green, but not to that extent. As a rule, on the contrary, it adds some charm. At least go to flickr, or look at the 2002-2003 reviews. to see the real color from this camera. Your camera has specific problems with the BB. I had all the Ss. (S2 is still in service today). The “bold” color velvia like is on S2. In general, it is not clear why it was forgotten. On club.foto there is a huge branch about s5 and a little bit s3. About s2 in general crumbs. S2 differs from s3-5, and many, including myself, consider s2 the camera itself in color. The most "true", real. The color that no plugins and filters can get in Photoshop.

    • Valdis

I absolutely agree, the super slow, obsolete C2 pro easily makes its picture of all venerable competitors, the cost of which differs by an order of magnitude. C2 must first be studied, carefully sorted out and it will give out that unique and incomparable Fujevo picture.

    • Sergei

      I fully support

  • anonym

The other day I bought myself two carcasses, S1 and S2. Funny toys, S2 seemed better.
