According provided by camera Canon 70D many thanks to the official representatives of Canon in Ukraine.
The Canon 70D was introduced on July 2, 2013, and, in fact, became a replacement for Canon 60D... 70D is a wonderful advanced amateur APS-C A camera that is perfect for enthusiastic photographers. Personally, I really liked the camera, because it has several revolutionary technologies that should bring SLR cameras to a whole new level of development. First of all, this concerns video shooting and the convenience of using Live View.
Since the release of the Canon 7D in September 2009, all subsequent Canon APS-C cameras have been built around the same sensor found in the 7D. And finally, after 4 years, Canon released a camera with new unique matrix Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Personally, I have long been waiting for Canon to come to its senses and do something new. I suppose that we will see this new matrix in a huge number of subsequent models.
First of all, Canon 70D is interesting precisely for its matrix, which can create images with a maximum size of 5472 by 3648 pixels, which is 19.961.856 pixels. Usually this number is rounded to 20 MP, or 20.2 MP is used (the reasons are described here) For taking pictures, the camera can use the ISO range 100-12.800, and you can also shoot at an extended ISO H value (equivalent to 25.600). For video recording, the ISO range is 100-6400, expandable to ISO H (12.800).
Separately, I want to note the automatic ISO control function. It was available in other Canon cameras a long time ago, but in the 70D I first saw the opportunity to set the maximum duration excerpts for modes P, AV... The values can be set to Auto, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 0.5, 1 ”. When shooting in P (program mode), Av (aperture priority) the automatic ISO control function will try to prevent excerpt has become longer than the specified value. When set to 'Auto' excerpt will be determined depending on the focal length of the lens. A similar, sometimes more advanced feature is available in 90% of all Nikon central control centers, and learning to use it can save a lot of time setting up the camera. For example, using a lens Canon EF-S 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM I set the value to 1/250 s and forgot what a grease or shake is.
Also, the auto ISO control function allows you to set the minimum and maximum ISO values. True, the maximum value for the function corresponds to the value 12.800; you cannot choose the value H (25.600). In addition, in the settings you can set the ISO range, which will be available for quick manual adjustment using the 'ISO' button.
Conventional focusing with the mirror down is accomplished with a 19 cross-type phase focusing unit. The same focusing system is used in the Canon 7D. As it should be, the 70D has a variety of focusing adjustments, including the ability to fine tune focus to compensate for back or front focus. An entire C.Fn II block is highlighted in the Custom Functions menu for customizing the focusing system. You can read more about phase focus modules in Canon cameras here.
When the mirror rises and the Live View mode is turned on, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF focus system is taken.
To implement each pixel on the camera sensor, two separate photodiodes are used. Thus, the pixel is divided into left and right parts, each of which is able to work to determine the phase difference. In fact, each pixel of the camera’s matrix turns into a separate phase focusing point, which makes it possible to focus with previously impossible speed and accuracy. This is especially important when shooting movies. I can say with confidence that the 70D is the first DSLR camera with more or less adequate focus when shooting video, as well as focusing with Live View to take photos.
During shooting, the signal from each half of the pixel is combined, as a result, in the photo and video, the effect of dividing the pixel into two parts disappears. For completeness, it is worth noting that in fact the CMOS matrix is built from sub-pixels of the Bayer pattern, which, together with the effect of the AA filter, adds its own complexity to creating such a sensor. It should be added that an increase in the number of pixels increases the amount of their electrical 'body kit', which may not have the best effect on the noise level and other indicators.
Prior to this, among all SLR cameras, only Sony cameras with a translucent mirror and electronic viewfinder (Sony SLT) had fast focusing when shooting video. It is worth noting that Canon and before that, implemented good practices that were designed to improve the focus speed in Live View. So, on models Canon 650D и 700DHybrid focusing system was installed CMOS AF, but on Canon 100D - Hybrid CMOS AF II. But still, there were obvious flaws in the work on these cameras, and it was difficult to shoot video and photos using Live View.
Canon claims that focusing using the Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor allows you to keep a person’s face in focus even when moving, including when shooting on a fast lens with a small DOF :). I want to note that this Dual Pixel CMOS AF is not like built-in phase focus sensors on other cameras.
The phase focusing area with Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes up the center 80% of the sensor area, as shown in the photo below. The rest of the sensor has the same dual photodiode pixel structure, but is not used for focusing for a number of technical reasons.
Also, revolutionary is the fact that the Dual Pixel AF phase focusing system allows focusing on lenses with a maximum aperture ratio of at least 1:11. For example, even the most advanced SLR cameras, such as Canon 1Dx, Nikon D4s, can easily use conventional phase focus sensors with lenses no darker than F / 8.0. For the 70D, the ability to focus normally at closed apertures is primarily important when shooting video.
When working with the camera, I was very surprised that in Live View the camera quickly focuses on sharpness even in pitch darkness. In the examples of photos there is a photo with a cup of tea. The lights were turned off in our house and I studied the 70D menu out of boredom. When the idea came up to take a cup of tea, there was enough light from the display of my phone for quick focusing. Then I took pictures of the cup using a flashlight.
Canon 70D can shoot video in Full HD quality 1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25 or 23.976 fps), 1280 x 720 (59.94 or 50 fps), 640 x 480 (59.94 or 50 fps) and two types compression ALL-I or IPB. I was a little surprised why the Canon 70D doesn't have the ability to shoot Full HD 60i or 60p video? Some Nikon DSLRs do a pretty good job of this. On the 70D, video is recorded with sound from a stereo microphone, the camera has an input for an external microphone. Probably the most important thing in a camera is how the focusing system works when shooting video. To test the operation of the focusing system, I used two STM lenses, which are designed to provide fast and high-quality focusing when shooting video - Canon 18-55mm STM и Canon 18-135mm STM... With both lenses, the camera focused quickly enough. Of course, sometimes there were mistakes, when the lens started to move the lenses in the wrong direction, or when the focusing got stuck, but in general, autofocusing when shooting video really reached a new level :).
For the sake of justice, I want to note that the focus when shooting video is inferior to Sony SLT cameras (cameras with a translucent mirror).
Measurement exposure implemented using a 63-zone sensor with dual-layer SPC and iFCL, the same as on a huge number of other Canon EOS cameras. This sensor first appeared in the Canon 7D. The camera makes accurate measurements without any problems. exposure even with manual lenses. You will find detailed information in the section 'Canon Camera Metering Sensors'.
Canon 70D weighs 755 grams and is made in a dust and water resistant body. When shooting, the camera easily tolerated light rain for two days. The device sits comfortably in my hand, the grip and some parts of the camera are rubberized. Everything is in good Canon style. The controls are very similar to Canon 60D, they just swapped the buttons a little, and on the top of the camera we added another button responsible for setting the focus areas (which is sometimes very convenient).
But unlike 60D The new camera uses a touch screen. I have already written more than once that the touch control on the Canon central control wheel is sensible and in some situations it’s even easier for me, a person who loves big buttons, to poke my fingers into the camera’s display a couple of times :). Of course, the display is rotatable, a large 3-inch by 1.040.000 pixels with an aspect ratio of 3: 2 (photos can be viewed without black strips). The same display is used on Canon 600D и 700D. Of course, it’s a pity that for sighting through JVI only 98% coverage with 0.95x magnification is used.
Canon 70D shoots at maximum speed 7 frames per second and has almost the same performancelike the Canon 7D. Such a speed should be enough for any amateur photographer.
If you disable all the additional functions that reduce the number of shots:
- Peripheral correction. lighting
- Chromate correction. aberrations
- Auto ISO
- Auto Brightness
- Shumopod. when it lasts. shutter speed
- Shumopod. at high ISO
- Range extension ISO
- Light priority
then it will fit into the buffer:
- 15-16 RAW frames
- 9 frames MRAW
- 11 frames SRAW
- 8 frames RAW + JPEG L
- 40 frames JPEG L
- > 99 frames JPEG M
If you enable all additional settings, then it is placed in the buffer:
- 12 RAW frames
- 8 frames MRAW
- 10 frames SRAW
- 7 frames RAW + JPEG L
- 26 frames JPEG L
- 78 frames JPEG M
Nice that frame buffer does not sags much when using functions that improve the original image. RAW files weigh from 20 to 40 MB and are slow SD card, a series of pictures takes a very long time to record.
Canon 70D can only use one memory card SD (or SDHC/SDXC). And another important innovation is the presence of built-in Wi-fi. Using it, you can control the camera from your smartphone (if you install the necessary software), and on your smartphone or tablet you can immediately see what the camera sees. You can also view captured material from the memory card, copy, delete, etc. There is just one very strange feature - when Wi-fi is turned on, video recording is completely disabled :).
More useful features:
- The camera can remotely control external flashes using the built-in.
- HDR function (only works when shooting in JPEG).
- The touch screen allows you to take a picture with one touch on the screen.
- A virtual horizon, and the function also works when sighted through JVI.
- Multiple exposure.
- Sensor cleaning system.
- Camera supports excerpts up to 1/8000 s. Flash sync speed - 1/250 sec.
- You can also buy a GPS receiver.
- There is a quiet shooting mode.
- etc.
For many functions there is a help in the camera menu, available by pressing the 'Info' button (or using the touchscreen).
My experience
After shooting 70D for a week, I came to the conclusion that the camera is really very good in many ways. I really liked the touchscreen, which can sometimes be used to get to the desired setting very quickly. Video shooting, as well as focusing using Live View, are of little interest to me, I use them extremely rarely, but for fans of video on a SLR camera, the 70D is a real godsend. However, in image quality, the 70D is not that far removed from the 7D.
Here link to the archive with the originals - 973 MB, 40 photos in .CR2 format (RAW) All photos taken on Canon EF-S 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM.

Canon 70D is a very nice camera. Among the rest of the 'real DSLRs' it has a new, really working (!) Technology that provides fast focusing in Live View mode, including when shooting video. The rest of the camera is also very good. I recommend the 70D as one of the best Canon Advanced Hobby Crops. When choosing a Canon DSLR camera, I advise you to look at the 'Which Canon camera to choose?'.
Material prepared Arkady Shapoval.
Which is better - d7100 or 70d? He broke his whole head, the video is not interesting.
For real work, only canon 7d or nikon d300s))
Nikon and Canon have exactly the same problem - there is no replacement for the 7D or replacement for the D300s. Although some believe that the 70D and D7100 are intended to replace the old cropped flagships.
Very cool review. Like Canon is going to release the second version of 7D
The Pentax K-3 is a great replacement for the D300. 24 megapixel without AA-filter, fast astofocus with dozens of points - and all cross-type, 2 memory cards, good old "screwdriver" and compatibility with a bunch of old native glass, as well as with M42 (unlike Nikon). And there are a lot of modern optics, besides, all of them are designed for crop (Pentax does not make full frames). Therefore, there are unusual focal lengths (such as 77 mm), but just comfortable on the crop.
Yeah, especially if the whole system under Nikon is licked to switch to K-3 :).
Rumor has it that in September, Canon announces the 7D Mark II.
We are waiting for new items.
Well, with a fig "nikon"? Nikon, as written, and read.
Well, then Comrade Anonymous is right, according to the rules of transcription, the same Nikon. But hearing cuts tk already accustomed. (nike remember or the name Nigel - Nigel)
Naikon is a transcription from the English word. And Nikon is Japanese. In Japan it is read exactly like Nikon. So here you can say “nikon” in the manner of Europeans or “nikon” in the manner of the creators of the Japanese camera.
that's it, in English. in the nissan mikra language - "maykra", chanel as "chenel", fiat and seat-fit and sit, and bmw - bm-double ... read better "in the original" ...
aha, and Mazda is ma-tsu-do
BMW is a German brand, and the Germans say BMW. Details on other brands here: http://www.adme.ru/tvorchestvo-reklama/brendy-po-russki-219355/
canon?
nikon?
what is it?
are you
or I don’t know something ?!
Here is a comparison http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-70D-vs-Nikon-D7100
Determine what parameters you need and choose them.
But in principle, do not start from the carcass, but from optics.
Dear tsatka. Arkady, you bought a used 5D for more than five thousand - the difference is two and a half times. What is the real difference in the resulting image? Subjectively?
Subjectively, due to the large pixel at 5d, the image is much more interesting, but getting it is much easier (in terms of shutter speeds). And in general, an image with 5d is at least no worse than 70d (my subjective opinion, not a reason for discussion). But unfortunately, old cameras lack a number of modern lotions, for example, Live View, etc.
That's right !! http://www.dxomark.com/ shows the same thing! 70d worse than the old dime

I would think, maybe it’s better to taste all the benefits of full-frame (albeit second-hand)?
If you want to taste - 6D is differently better than the old penny in the picture, its matrix is not inferior to 5Dm3, at high ISO it shoots like I have not seen before. Well, the serial is not fast, well, the buffer is small. And there is nothing more to complain about. Although pyadvak is also good, ISO up to 1600 is really working. My friend, by the way, sells his second penny with 24-105 / 4L and 135 / 2L. Don't think of it as an advertisement, but if you're interested, I'll take you.
Thanks. Photography is generally not a cheap hobby, but such price tags for a crop are generally embarrassing. There are many lotions, and they seem to be useful, but in reality not everyone will / will be able to use them. It turns out, as with mobile phones - there are many functions, but you use calls, SMS and an alarm clock. And it's a pity that there is no flashlight, as in the old one)) In general, the technology goes ahead so much that I personally cannot keep up. In the sense of comprehending and using the possibilities 100%. Probably, the crop for 13 thousand has its own target audience. I just want to say that technology is good when it is available. Manufacturers follow the path of increasing functions, pixels there, and with them prices. And I would like to work to reduce the cost and increase productivity at the same time. As with the same computers - your next computer is cooler than the past, and at least not more expensive, or even cheaper.
There used to be such a proverb: If you want to ruin someone - give him a camera!
in one of the books on photography, the author warns that the photographer is a kind of "addict" and advises to keep yourself in hand so as not to let everything down on new glasses, filters, flashes, macro rings, etc. It's a good proverb, probably the person who put everything down came up with it :)
I completely agree with the author of the book that many photographers, if not 99% for sure. I myself suffer from this and try to buy new photographic equipment. I have already spent a lot of money and I do not regret it. it's a kind of investment too. AFTER Sony A6000 I WANT TO NOW BUY 6300 AND MUCH MORE THAN, Although I do not forget about self-training.
I was waiting for this review!)
At first I wanted to do some super-detailed review, but in the end I limited myself to being so small :)
A super detailed review can be read on dpreview, for example. And you, as a practicing photographer, are more interested in personal impressions. So everything is ok
With a high degree of confidence, we can say that SLR cameras are already a dead-end branch of development, to a greater extent this applies to the amateur segment, but in the future this will also affect more advanced models. Canon's addition of phase-detection AF sensors, while touted as an innovation, is actually one of the signs that the in-camera mirror is in its last days. Issues of profitability of production and improvement of technologies are in the first place - a mirror with mechanics and a piece of dripping in the viewfinder are losing. Of course, now there will be those who will be foaming at the mouth and will argue about the advantages of a “warm lamp” mirror and a “cocking” shutter sound, but these are more likely those who use the camera for the sake of the camera itself, and not for the sake of called photography.
Sorry, but you wrote nonsense. So far, all the mirrorless cameras I have tested cannot be compared with a DSLR. So far, mirrorless cameras are just expensive whistle-making deals.
I also compared my Nikon DSLR and Sony’s mirrorless mirror with a friend and I saw the clear advantages of using a mirrorless shutter speed at shutter speeds shorter than 1/2000 over my DSLR. He doesn’t bother with the reconfiguration and always puts iso800 and gets excellent pictures even in the light, which I can not afford in the DSLR.
You are right, why huge cameras, with unrealistic detail (meaning the medium format that most famous photographers shoot), in our country they will soon shoot for Vogue on iPhone 5 in order to be different at least)))).
In reality, I want to cry from the photo industry in Ukraine. A whole bunch of shocking photographers who have absolutely no taste. People who know only two brands of cameras due to lack of money and the opportunity to make money with creativity.
Distracted))), 70D excellent reporting, very convenient rotary screen with a touchscreen, you can shoot at any angle and in any F)). Aftofocus zoom adjusts to the short and long end, the built-in control puff is very convenient by the way. For a portrait, it’s categorically not suitable, unless processed under a film. In short, a camera for paparazzi. By the way, crop has many of its advantages, and generally it is useless to compare crop and FF, each is tailored for its own tasks.
I forgot to thank you for the review - thanks to Arkady for the work! Your subjective opinion is often more defining than the thousands of faceless reviews on the net that look like advertising brochures.
From your examples, I got the impression that the dynamic range is not the strongest side of this sensor, is that so or am I mistaken?
Yes, I pointed out that the quality did not go very far from 7D. The same d7100 with DD and color depth is much better.
Thank you for the excellent review, the only thing you forgot to mention is the presence of micro-tuning of autofocus lenses with memory for 40 lenses. On this camera, the back-front focus is now treated independently without service centers. I was very surprised by the picture quality of whale lenses 18-55 and 18-135, apparently they were created for this camera.
I didn’t forget, just someone inattentively read :)
I'm sorry, missed. From now on I will be more attentive. :)
Now you can not be afraid of Sigma and Tamron?
Micro-tuning still somehow works on fixes, but on zooms this is just an opportunity to fine-tune more precisely on a specific range.
Tried to tune old iron tokina and new sigma - not an option.
If they had added a multi-zone stand, then yes - it would be great.
Just a tincture for all focal, crop camera for reporting, Arkady thank you so much for the review with emotions.
Thanks for the review, it was interesting to get acquainted with the noisy novelty :-) Arkady in your chapter. My experience in this proposal is that I don’t wash the correct endings. After shooting at 70D for a week, I came to the conclusion that the camera is really very good in many X (M) indicators X (M).
This is how you look at it ...))) “The camera is as good as possible for the showers” ... I don't see any contradictions, we are in Ukraine.
That's why I respect Arkady, because in the reviews of any cameras or lenses, there are always amazing photographs of their own "production". Even provided that the technique, as they say, is “not ice”. Which once again confirms the thesis that a good photographer will take pictures even on a bucket with a hole, and even a vaunted watering can will not help a bad one.
Thank you for a good review, I have one question in the picture where is the matrix and the buyer filter, so it turns out that the lens of the buyer filter is not the size of the pixel, but more precisely the picture shows that about 2 pixels in an interesting way, so on all cameras or pictures purely schematically not drawn to size?
This is a schematic for understanding the essence.
It seems to me or Nikon’s images are a bit sharper? ..
Which Nikon, with which lens and with what Picture Control settings :)
Looked at pictures of D7100 and D5200 from your review and on the net. In general, the photos taken on Nikon seem to me sharper than their counterparts from Canon, but from Canon - the picture is softer, lighter, from Nikon - the colors are thicker. Maybe subjective, but such an impression.
I will add that the Nikon D7100 has a wider dynamic range compared to the 70D.
I agree DimDim, as I decided to test or rather test the Canon EOS 7D and Nikon 7000, I installed Canon 50mm 1.4 and Nikon 50 mm 1.8 D And, oddly enough, Nikon WINS BY SHARPNESS OF MICROCONTRAST, I tried to make the settings the same according to ISO. with a hole 1.8 sharper and sharper at Nikon
Hello. As I understood from the review about the new matrix, the pixel size was reduced by 2 times without visible damage to image quality. Perhaps in the near future there will be a new matrix with a higher resolution of at least 72 MP (if you double 32 MP in the D800)?
They got it wrong. They have not decreased, just to implement focusing, each pixel is divided into two parts. During imaging, the signal from the halves is combined. This is indicated in the review. Most likely, the new matrix will not be 72 MP, but 54 MP, if you build a full-frame camera using pixel technology from D7100 / 5200/5100/5300/3200/3300 (24 MP * 2.25 = 54, where 2.25 is the square of the crop factor). Although this is already full hentai.
A typo came out - 36 MP for the D800
Please tell me which Canon is the best: 50D, 60D or 70D?
50 and 70 in functionality, there is practically no difference in the picture
Arkady, I've read a lot, I have a Nikon d7000, and the picture control settings are only for jpega or do they affect raw? I just thought raw is generally a raw image without any camera processing! Only exposure settings .. If it's not difficult for you - tell me!
Affects RAW as well, but only when viewed and / or converted using native utilities. While ADL affects the exposure, in JPEG it is normal, in RAW there may be underexposure. And there are a lot of such things, so it is recommended to turn off all enhancements when shooting in RAW.
It's just that native software picks up the Picture Control settings from the RAW file and immediately (by default) applies them when the file is opened. And to you it is your will - to leave it this way or to do it differently.
I, as an ardent supporter of Nikon's father :) really wanted this camera for myself !!! :))))
:)
Thanks for your review! For half a year now I have been looking closely at the 70D, which I want to use for video filming. I did not understand the point: “there is one very strange feature - when Wi-fi is on, video recording is completely disabled :)” Do I understand correctly that it is impossible to control the camera from the tablet when filming video?
The bottom line is that I want to control the camera using a tablet, as it were ... the tiny display of the camera is not sugar, especially in the bright sun, but on the 10-inch super-AMOLED display of the tablet, details are seen better, much better. And if it will be impossible to shoot video with a legal camera with a tablet, this is a CATASTROPHE. I'll have to look towards SONY, and I have 12 kg of glasses for Canon (my old 450D, which is good for everyone, only can't shoot video).
Yes, it’s possible to shoot only photos from a tablet.
Special monitor option not considered?
I also want to understand what file size is obtained when shooting video in FullHD 30 fps, lasting 1 minute (for example).
70D, as I understand it, has 2 video recording speeds. 28Mbps and 87Mbps, respectively, the minute of the video will weigh 210Mb and 653Mb, and the hour of the video will be 12,6Gb and 39,1Gb.
Should I change Nikon 5200 to Canon 70D?
thank you in advance!
It makes sense to change Nikon 5200 to d7100 or d610 ...
DigitalRevTV in Russian. Canon EOS 70D vs. Nikon D7100

Tell me, is it worth switching from a 70D camera to a Nikon 7100? ..
Arkady, is it possible the date of the article “31.05.2014/XNUMX/XNUMX | Category: Thoughts on photographic equipment ”should be placed at the beginning of the post, so that it immediately catches the eye? Thanks.
however bent ...
"The camera makes accurate metering without any problems even with manual lenses."
industar 61 at 5.6 metering is normal, if you cover the hole to 8 or higher we get ... PERESVET !!! and this is without a chip then ...
And on the manual, in fact, they should be focused with the open and measured, too.
Moreover, I’ll open a big secret, focusing and metering on Canon even with autofocus optics takes place with the OPEN aperture. And only when you press the shutter button, it closes.
On all modern central telegrams with autofocus lenses, exposure metering and focus focus occur at the maximum open aperture. And the aperture blades hide behind how much is programmed when you press the button.
I bowed 70D even if I didn’t say anything better actively and then I began to drink on the matrices, and there were pixels in the air like the Zoryans, the sky is especially kind when you see it. so what about the new matrix of nothing good to say I can’t, but as a whole, the camera was added to finish the shustri. And the matrix will have to be shown sklki tse koshtuє not May the manifest.
